This is more of story of a teenager with existential crisis. His view contradicts existentialists. But probably it's because I expect to see a representation of 'existentialist' as a philosophical movement, rather than just a simple word.
In my opinion, this is thin on existentialist theory and more a representation of nihilism, making the title more than a little misleading. I think it was putting too much focus on the fact that he was depressed and suicidal. This ignores that, for an existentialist, the lack of an objective meaning to life does not make them depressed, though obviously at some point they would have an existential crisis, becoming suicidal is too often used as a convenient 'catch-all' for such a crisis. Rather, it makes them assert that they are responsible for judging what values underpin their own lives, which is why Sartre refers to man as being 'condemned to be free'. If anything, an existentialists biggest question is, 'I could do anything I chose to, what is it that I truly want to do?', and it is that freedom of choice that gives them sleepless nights. That having been said, I found it an interesting take on a few of the questions an existentialist would ask themselves, and a lot better than I thought it would be when I decided to click. Worth the like.
After looking back on this short film a little while after we had put it together, we also agree that we had the theories of existentialism and nihilism a bit askew. There’s quite a few things that I think we would’ve done differently had we been given the chance to do this project all over again. But then again, that’s what is so great about filmmaking. Thanks for the feedback, we have some big projects ahead!
I have to disagree with the assessment here. Yes Existentialism is a way out of nihilism, but anyone who takes a good honest look at life will most likely come to a nihilistic conclusion. Suicide is one solution to the this Existential crisis. The Existentialist/subjective way out could also either go the way of Kierkegaard and the leap of faith or they look for subjective meaning in their lives of a non-theistic nature. However I think both ways are different modes of subjectivity being truth ;).
I'm so impressed with this fantastic piece of art!!! You did a great job! I have never been so caught up in a no budget production! It was so real. The fact that you made me love a movie filmed with a bad dslr makes you an up n' coming Spielberg!
Decent job man, I really enjoyed this. Nice insert shots and use of frame within a frame, overall great composition. Audio editing was decent as well. Only complaint I have is the acting and editing was choppy in parts but overall nice short. keep it up
Why does existentialism have to be sad? I completely and truly am I existentialist and I'm so happy with that information I find it comforting and I'm mentally strong enough to be okay with not having a purpose in fact I'm glad
Where the theme of the film was good and decent. Which are synonyms unlike nihilism and exsistentialism. I understand the misconception between the two but I (as a Buddhist exsistentialist writer) seek more i can relate to in films like this. Also I have watched several of them and the main character is always suicidal. Where I personally can relate to this I feel that exsistentialism is not about a void of purpose. It's about creating your own purpose as a human.
The part of this video until 4:50 ( the personsos initial conception of life) shows a skewed and misinterpreted view of existentionalism, It is indeed way more of a nihilistic sence of value. the character portrayed in the movie, is a prime example of a person , who haphazardly put together their life percpetion based on excerpts from existentional philosophy, and have resorted to resignation and shunning of the 2nd integral and movement defining aspect of existentionalism ( at least according to nietzsche, Camus etc.) the Strive, the amor fati . Waiting for soemthing good to happen is a path to self destruction and listlessness. Things happen based on certain stimuli that casue them, many of those things are influenced by someone or happen becasue of what somebody chsoe to do, i beleive that a lot of what can happen is up to us. A true existentionalist woudl not resort to a perception so incomplete and unquestioning. Beliieveing in lack of sense per se, and acceptign that everything is meaningless in hope of you, in return , not having to put any particular value to it, or try to define it, is pure weakness and escapism, it's the definition of warping a theory. In my opinion, this is not an accurate representation, this is simply a depiction of a waeklings ungainly hobbling through the realm of philosophy and choosing to leave the questions existentionals pose unanswered, with lack of true desire to Be. otherwise i really like the acting and how the idea is brought across. Its really high quality for an amateur production
I related so much until the girl was introduced.. my problem is I can't just anchor myself mentally down to someone or something like that or easily because everything is always in question 😟😟
Don't quite get the main "essence" behind existencialism, and the only motivation being romantic was a little weak, but in general it was a good effort. Could elaborate more on the theories and practices. As for production, a few clichés without exaggeration, average crew performance. Nice photography though. Sound is decent too.

I couldn't agree more.

You are the first channel to have ever graciously admitted that they made a mistake.

Nihilism doesn't have to be Synonymous with depression either .
the acting made me flesh crawl.
PumpHouse, this is amazing, it's so deep, you're extremely talented
Thank you very much!
It's not deep. It's disgusting.
Preach, dead ass my guy
Amazing work!
incredible .. realy this is amazing
I think the dependence on another is against the existential way of thinking. I love it. I don't want to walk alone anymore.
Good work.
Hey this is amazing. I guess you've improved a lot in these years. Keep making stuff guys.

+Alexander Prager Thank you! Been needing money to buy a new camera, and my good lens was broken during this shoot haha
+Pumphouse Productions Well you sure made the best of the situation!
This was an absolutely gorgeous short. Even just visually - stunning.
U don't understand existentialism.. Y say so.

me too
using a woman as a way out is a weak move.....
if the character is a real strong man , he will create his own way ! or meaning
Agree with
its the hit or miss acting for me
btw no hate they r both very talented, I could never
Existentialism is far soothing than a girl....
This scares me...because it's my life.
the univers is indiferent
there is no meaning,
you can build your own meaning ,
in the end what doesn't kill you it will make you stronger......
luciu constantin Thank you.
This is amazing!!
First brush the teeth and THEN eat?

yes thought the same. nice video but that's not existentialism.
