Wonder Woman 1984: Is It As Bad As We Remember?

- Опубліковано 14 лют 2024
- Wonder Woman took cinemas by storm when it was released in 2017. Despite being a period piece set during World War 2, it managed to bring in droves of fans to witness Diana Prince's origin tale. So, with the same creative team returning for a sequel and the ever-popular decade of the 80s being its setting, this could outdo the first in every way. But with expectations comes disappointment as the film released during COVID caused quite a stir for its creative partners and had some rather questionable CGI. So today on DC Revisited, we're getting into it all as we dive into Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 1984.

I still love the first Wonder Woman movie.
Me too. Good plot/storyline with a very good heroine: Wonder Woman. Of course they had to go in a different direction with the 2nd film, too bad they didn't have a better written script and a different storyline for the 2nd movie.
@@user-be7tc2bd6e the fact that the 2017 movie and 1984 was made by the same director is mind-blowing to me...
WW shortchanged the character. Had they brought in a writer like Rucka or even Simone instead of Heinberg we would of had a much much better film
The problem with WW1984 is that the message at the end of the movie is that "You have it better than you think you do" despite the only person who is shown to have a better life than they realize is Max Lord. Most importantly, Cheetah is shown to be neglected, ignored, and dismissed at the start of the movie until she gets her wish. Rather than appreciated, but in ways that aren't what she wants. The antagonists are arguably the most important ones to make it true for.
I remember seeing the teaser poster, her standing in front of an array of screens, 1984. It looked very intriguing, very cool.
Then we get a magic wishing rock. It's a Care Bears movie. Forget 80 years of material to draw from or adapt, lets get a magic wishing rock.
I bet that idea came about by, ' how can we get Chris Pine back?" Then that influenced the whole movie.
The logic behind Chris Pines reintroduction makes no sense.
If they'd just recast Pine as Steve Trevor's Nephew... Then the Magic McGuffin Stone wouldn't have been needed and they could've just focused on a better story.
@JC_Chappy I thought that was the idea when he was in the trailer.
Or he was a villains projection.
Or Zeus snapped him out of the explosion and stuck him in a time warp. You'd roll your eyes but get over it.
Or just no Steve.
@@JC_Chappy I was expecting him to be back as his characters great grandson, or have him survive the first film and stuck in suspended animation or something.
It was so maddening to see how many of these flaws in the movie could have been avoided.
without a strong and independant diversity hire as a director you mean ? that's so istophobic...
@@slckb0y65And yet here we are…
It was just obvious that neither Jenkins nor Johns truly get how to write a WW story. The proof is how they modeled the first movie after the Captain America movie and simply plugged in ideas and concepts from the most recent DC comic storylines. Fortunately it worked that time.

I recommend searching for this fanedit called The Excellent Adventure Edit, cuts out a lot of the bad stuff and or/re-edits some confusing moments (also adds in a bunch of kickass 80s songs throughout).
It's much better than the actual movie.
Does it run 40 min?
Is WW not a r*pist in this cut?
@@justiniansnow8919 Yep
@@JoBloOriginals 109 minutes
This is a classic example of another Director/Writer not being told no.
When I saw it in the theater, I thought it was bad. When I thought about it later, I realized it was worse.
It gets a solid 'C' from me, if only because Gal Gadot is SO much fun to look at.
True
I usually find something to like in a genre movie. I even “liked” Green Lantern because Mark Strong nailed Sinestro. There are only three movies that I couldn’t get through: Green Hornet (2011); Tomb Raider (2018); and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020).
"This movie was good....but it could have been much better." Maxx Lorde
The film could have been better if Allan Heinberg returned to write the script, as he wrote the first one. This film’s script was all over the place
FACTS.
Yes. Yes, it is. And to be clear, it's also not that kind of movie that bombs first but then gets better with time.
It may well be worse than we remember.
The 1st Wonder Woman film was decent cause other people were involved. When Patty had more creative control, Diana wasn't allowed to have a sword... but could sleep with a man whose conscious was dormant while Steve Trevor's consciousness was in him😒
If this was the first WW movie, a 2nd solo film would never have been made it was that bad!
WW movie setting was during WWI.
Not only was it set in the 80s, but so was the plot. The story was just so bland and really didn't do anything for advancing the Wonder Woman story. You could have removed Wonder Woman and put anyone else in her place and it'd make as much sense. Good storytelling ADDS to a character and continues to tell their story. This did none of that.
No... _it's worse_ 😬
Lowest effort
It gets worse with repeated views
@@40g33k WW's biggest enemy...a windy room 🙄🤦
Nah... its not worse. Cuz I loathed it... didnt help though that I thought the best parts of the beloved original were just bits taken from other, and mostly done better films such as Superman, Captain America(I mean it literally ends w a Steve sacrificing himself by crashing an airplane). So wasnt a matter of falling from grace. But, now that theyre forging their own path, instesd of charging fpeth strongly, I knew itd be exposed. Patti Jenkins is OVERRATED.
Yeah. It’s a hard sit the first 10 minutes could easily be completely removed from the movie and nothing would be lost.
I was really excited for this movie when it came out. But by the time the invisible jet showed up I was over it.
Pedro at least looked like he was having a good time.
The thing is I didn't have any high expectations going in. I was already let down by first film's third act that I actually came away from this film more positive than most.
Compared to almost every super hero thing we have gotten since this.....makes this look like a masterpiece lol
The 1 highlight of the film was Chris Pine. Even though his return doesn’t narratively line up, with him looking like someone else, all the best scenes are whenever he was on screen
In these strange modern times its actually very refreshing and invigorating to read your comment. Woke and radical feminism has made everyone feel obligated to always heap lots of praise and adulations on a woman for literally doing anything. So it was great to see you giving a man his much deserved kudos and credit
I agree Chris Pine is great in the film. Him and Gal have great chemistry.
You made me relive this nightmare all over again. BUT there is one tiny little detail u didn't mention (on purpose bc a detailed description of cinema like this cannot have this omission): this one was wrote by Jenkins and others while the first one wasn't and she came in the last moment since it was going to be directed by someone else. So she basically had everything ready. Not saying it's easy to do at all, but the 2nd one is sll on her and the outrageous story.
I'll agree with everything in this review except the very ending. We haven't been in the "Snyder Timeline" since ZSJL. Everything after that movie + JOSStice League is NOT the same universe. It doesn't matter if it has the same actors, it's not the same. The Snyderverse (MoS, BvS, ZSJL) was put together with respect for the characters, the DC clusterfuck that is all other DC movies were just thrown together aimlessly.
Sort answer w/o watching the vid - yeah, it's still bad. Actually, it's baffling in almost every way. Regardless of expectations and CGI, it's just really really bad on a film making level. It's like a throwback superhero movie and not in a fun way.
If they'd just recast Pine as the Steve Trevor's Nephew... Then the Magic McGuffin Stone wouldn't have been needed and they could've just focused on a better story.
You can tell how rushed the scripting was [to capitalise on the first film] as there is so many things that if they had another 6 months writing they could easily have fixed/ straightened out.
This was about finding a way to get Chris Pine back in the movie. That and not wanting to have the "Avengers Problem" of wondering where everyone else was by setting it after Justice League. The first movie was so good and then this one was....awful.
1st WW movie was set during World War 1
Obvious Fact is Obvious.
This movie is a LOT better than people were saying. It's not the best or amazing, but it's still good. There are way worse superhero movies out there. This isn't bad.
That Was a Cool Movie 🎬
Specially Gal Gadot 💗 💕
I’m not a huge Gadot fan, but damn, she deserved more than $300,000 for the first one
Yeah I would agree there
She had been part of the fast and furious crew before it so I'm surprised she wasn't in a stronger negotiating position.
Its almost a so bad its good film. But manages to even fall short of that.
WW84 wasn't that bad of a film. Tbh, I've seen worse in my 56 years of life. Way worse. However, I must admit that it could've been better. Out of all the material that could've been used to make the film, they choose a magic wishing rock? Who's bright idea was that? Give those people a raise and a bonus(note my sarcasm). Seriously, that had to be the thinest plotline I've ever seen. At any rate, other than that, it was a fun movie. Nothing too serious. Kinda campy to a certain extent too but fun nonetheless. If WW84 wasn't your cup of tea, okay. But, it's not as bad as people let on.
WW84 fell into the same trap that so many superhero films have over the last decade or so that is a garbled story. This whole dream stone got really confusing and made no sense by the end. There was a lot pointless story too. There whole thing with Diana has a child was too long and no real bearing on the story. Sadly, it was a poor movie from top to bottom.
You should NOT ignore all that the Steve Trevor possesion implies as that was one of the MAJOR factors that derailed this movie for me and alot of people. It was and still is super gross.
Indeed. I mean you had a magic wishing stone...just have him be brought back to life and avoid all the awfulness in the body possession situation.
This was better than any movie 🎬 😍. Only lacks action 😢
YES
One Of The Best Film. Not As Good as WW 2017 But Gal Made It Good
I enjoyed this sequel more than the first cause I had more fun with it.
I agree as much as I enjoy the first film I had more fun with this one.
Patty was given free reign, and she bitched it.
With Wonder Woman being the first DCU film to be a universal critical and commercial hit with no production issues, I do get why they wanted a sequel quickly but it certainly was rushed in scripting as it was originally due to come out December 2019. It's certainly a mess and a step down but as I went in with low expectations I did enjoy the ride [particularly Gadot-Pine's chemistry and Pascal's performance] for all it's flaws.
It's kinda like spider man 3
The Hamada Era (sandwiched between the Johns-Berg Era and the Gunn Era) was full of copying the worst parts of the MCU.
Pedro Pascal was my favorite part of Wonder Woman 1984. All he wanted to do was provide a good life for his son by any means necessary. Gal Gadot was still great as Wonder Woman.
I actually liked it, and her choice to let Steve go.
Same ❤❤❤
What a MASSIVE fall from grace!
Before I even watch the video, I'll add my two cents about 1984 as well as the original film. First off, I found the original movie not that great and didn't understand why it was so well received. It wasn't the worst movie I ever saw, but far from any super hero movie I would consider great, it was watchable, that's the best I can say for it. But when put it along side other DC theatrical efforts of the time, I guess I can see why it was held so high, as most of those films were unwatchable(so a very low bar indeed).
As for 1984, someone should be flogged, tared & feathered, and put on display in the middle of town for public ridicule. The time I lost watching that can never be reclaimed and watching paint dry would have been a better use of my time. By all accounts, it made the first film look like the Mona Lisa by comparison, WTF!? I'm an 80's kid, so it wouldn't have taken much for me to say cool, thanks for the nostalgia, and they didn't come close. One of the worst films I've ever seen, and if I hadn't watched it at home, I probably would have walked out on it(which I've never done before).
WW84 isn’t just a surprisingly bad movie (by every metric), but also one of the greatest squanderings of goodwill. So many wanted to see WW84 build on the successes of the original so the disappointment was disproportionate.
I wanted so much to like it and it pretty much failed on every expectation - I’ve not gone back yet to revisit it
Yes
No, the problem with WW84 is that nothing in the story hangs on the protagonist being Wonder Woman!
It is a WishMaster franchise movie, with the DC characters pasted in.
Yeah, it was based on a WW comic, I understand but, still, what's the connection to the character of the first movie?
No, this is Back door to Hell but in DC. And a very good one at that!
Before even watching this, I enjoyed it work comparing it to the first flick and understanding the whys being it
Yes.
Gal Still Slams. Only Reason I Watched
No, it wasnt so bad. It´s underrated. It didnt deserve its bad reception. Gal is awesome. And it´s action scenes are good. The only bad thing was Cheetah´s lack of screen time. I was upset when I knew Wonder woman 3 was cancelled!
“Halle Berrys cat woman was the worst female super hero movie of all time. “
Wonder Woman 84 “ hold my beer “
Have IT On DVD 👍👌😊😆 Not As good as the first one But I Enjoy It For What It is. I Like Gal Gadot 😆👊✊😆
I Realy Liked the Learning To FLY SCEANS - Wonder Woman Learning to FLY Like Superman Does in His Movie - Movies - Superman the Movie And The Man Of Steel 👍👌 Awesomeness Continues! 👊✊ They Really Should Make One More Episode And Make it a Wonder Woman Trilogy! 👍👌👊✊👌👍👌😆🍁♈🍁
1984 was very disappointing imo. Original was so much better. Sooo good really.
I made a mistake of watching this when my friends & my GF baited me... The next day I have completely forgotten about the movie lmao!
I don't get all the bad cgi in the movies that were held up during covid like shouldn't that give them more time to have worked on the film
And I Watched The Movie 14 Times In Theatre. Gal Gadot Face Is Addicting 🔥 🥵.
Wonder Woman was such a blast! I've rewatched it multiple times. WW 84? Saw it once and haven't looked back. It was truly awful, which is such a shame.
5:08 well, the movie certainly ignored all that it implies
12 minutes is a long time to say "yes."
Hahahahaha
YES.
i had it as the only thing left to watch a bit ago. it was a chore to get through to the end. Comics Max Lord is so much better than this adaptation.
They tried to do too many things. I think more restraint would have helped. There was no focus in the over all story.
"Life is good, but it could be better."
The first WW was carried largely by the action scenes. And since the original cut was deemed unwatchable, extensive reshoots were done. And, IMO, it was Zach Snyder who stepped in, and shot the action scenes that carried the movie to success. Compare the action scenes to those in other Snyder films, and it becomes very obvious. Then, with the success of the first movie, Patty Jenkins decided it was going to be HER film. And it stunk. The action scenes were laughable, and the sub-plot of bringing back Steve Trevor by having him inhabit the body of another man, without any thought of consent or accountability? If that had been done to a woman, it would have caused a huge backlash.
It was quite the achievement how awful WW84 turned out. It cost 200 million to make???? they must have had lobster and cavier at the catering truck for every meal. if you told me the movie cost 40 million even that would have been a stretch because clearly none of it was spent on special effects, costumes and stunts.
The premise of making a wish was just stupid.
Even the first was nowhere NEARLY as good as the consensus would have you believe, the wind was a fkng garbage fire
I recently watched this film again and my feeling was that it isn't as bad as I originally thought. It isn't as good as the first one, don't get me wrong. But it isn't that bad.
The way Barbara slowly becomes the Cheetah is well done. The scene in the "invisible" jet is a little cheesy but it's fun. Diana riding the lightning was cool. The comedy worked for the most part. The story idea was good overall. It was just executed poorly in places. The opening scene on Themiscyra is good.
Even with it's flaws, it's better than Birds Of Prey, The Suicide Squad, or Blue Beetle.
One of Zimmer’s worst scores imo and I think losing Allen Heinberg is the key to this film’s creative failure.
Yes it is BAD as we remember.
They overcomplicated it. Cheetah vs Wonder Woman should have been enough
if it wasn’t for kristen wig, i wouldn’t have enjoyed this movie at all. i absolutely adored her 90’s style villain arc. it was basically a rip off of catwoman in batman returns and i ate it up lol she stole the show imo, not pedro tho he was fun too. their team up feels like something out of a 90’s batman film as well. gal gadot being there is unfortunate. yeah.
I really enjoyed the first Wonder Woman film. Absolutely well done. Wonder Woman 1984? 100% hot garbage. I don't even know where to begin.
I was glad to see Landmark Mall one last time before it was demolished but the movie was Eh......
Yesterday (Feb 14th) I watched Wonder Woman, Wonder Womon 1984, and FLASH.
WW1984 was decent, but Kirsten Weg's character was pathetic for this script...
Without Kirstens character, it could have been ALOT better!
Justice League was handled (scripted) much better for Diana's character.
I can't think of a multi-villain comic book movie that has turned out good
Naw, dark knight was pretty good.
Yes it is. Such a waste of potential.
It Wasn't a Bad Movie . I Want Gal Back For Wonder Woman 3 💔 💔
They spent 200 million making that lump of atrocious garbage. 🤦♂️
It was never a bad movie people think they are movie critics but they are just following what everyone else says
Ah, the 1st Wonder Woman film was set during WWI not WW2.
Yes. It is. A bad movie is a bad movie. The problem is cinematic entertainment has gotten progressively worse since the late 90s. The fact the prequels are now seen as quality entertainment...is proof how bad movies/"tv" has gotten. They've dumbed everything down...so the population has much lowered expectations. Problem is, when a movie comes out like WW1984, it lowers the bar even further. The first film was a great time with a lacking ending. 1984 was simply bad writing and direction. It's sad to watch happen. I haven't been to he movies in over 5yrs now, and have no plans to do so based on the trailers coming out. One can only hope there will be another Renaissance before I lose all interest.
It's WORSE!
Whether they want to resurrect loverboy originally or it was fan service decided later on, it is a horrible idea anyway.
No Its Good ❤
Its worse then we remember.
Gal "Ga-dot?" 🤔
Yes, it is as bad as i remember and i will never watch it ever again as i remember most of what ruined the movie.
Short answer….. yes
... I bloody hate this movie. I loved the first one.
Imagine if there was no Gal Gadot. This movie could get negative rating lol
I LOVE THIS Movie!
Yes. WW1 in WW1 was better
My wish would have been that it was never made
Defo one of these sequels that disappoints as its nowhere near the original. But a poor sequel aside, it happens and you can recover (see Thor Ragnorak). Theres just too much focus on the love interest and the fact she was whiny about him like 70 years on absolutely doesnt do justice to what was set out as one of the strongest female heroes in either the DCEU or the MCU.
Yes. The answer is yes, it's absolutely awful, just awful
A Movie Fled With Good Ideas Just Landed in A Bad Way .
Good movie actually 😊
