I would add the 2008 Bollinger "RD" to this list, and pretty much any vintage of Salon. The Salon is a bit pricey, but it's worth the occasional splurge. Really well done video, thanks much!
Thanks for highlighting the best of the best. I tend to collect champagnes in a ring below the majesties you spotlighted-2007 Comte de Champagne, 1998 Cuvée Rare, 2008 Cristal. Now I have an unquenchable desire to climb Krug and Dom mountain.
Thank you for sharing your top five champagnes of 2021! All of them exquisite, divine, and majestic! Hope I can taste the magical Selosse someday! Santé!
Magnificent Top 5 Champagnes. I am very familiar with Dom and Krug but not those stellar vintages you are featuring. Never had the opportunity to taste the Selosse, and I hope I get to try it at least once in my lifetime 😃. Wonderfully put together, John! Cheers to the New Year! 🎊🥂🍾
I read Robert Walter's 'Bursting Bubbles' lately. Apart from the pleasant style (it's written like a travel guide) it opened my eyes toward the small growers in Champagne. It seems to me that there is much to discover here!
Attorney Somm: can you recommend a champagne with a poorer execution of balanced flavors vs acidity? I’d like to do a side-by-side to contrast it with some of your recommendations of better expressions
An interesting question for sure! These all had some age on them. If you compare Veuve from the 80s and 90s to these from the 80s snd 90s, the flavor intensity is not as pronounced and it is generally more oxidized. For newer Champagnes, those from the South generally have less acidity since it’s warmer.
Great video! I have had the opportunity to taste 98 Dom Perignon last year and it was fantastic. Got a bottle of 96 which I have yet to open will wait a few more years to find the right occasion to try it out. Fortunate to have tried a few different Selosse including Rosé, Substance and Initial. I personally love it but it’s a polarising style Not have many opportunities to taste Krug. Do they a long term aging potential in the bottle? May try to get some 2008 to put away. Cheers
Thanks very much! The 1996 Dom is definitely one of my favorite vintages of Dom! Think you will really enjoy it. Yes, I have enjoyed some '88 and '90 vintage Krug the past couple years that was stunning! But I also had a '96 that seemed a bit tired. Could have been the storage for that one. I also enjoy the Krug GC with additional bottle age and often age mine another 4-6 years or even a bit longer. Cheers!
I'm a big fan of it! The 2008 is certainly at that level. I don't have as much of it in my cellar as those others, but every time I taste it I wished I had more of it.
Such a prestige list and not accessible y most. Especially in Canada. At least not in the retail market. Would be great to hear opinions on more accessible champagnes like bollinger special cuvée and grande Anne.
Thank you for watching and your feedback. Yes, I have a UA-cam video on Cremant and often discuss top values for Champagne and other wines in my videos and on IG. I’m a huge fan of Grande Anne. I also think that Charles Heidsieck’s NV offers compelling value at excellent prices. Vintage Delamotte is often a good buy too, especially if you can find a sale.

Thanks very much! Completely agree with you. I’m a big fan of both. They would have been included if I tasted them that calendar year.
Happy Champagne day Attorney 😄😄😄
Thanks very much! Cheers! 🍾🥂

My pleasure! I enjoy the Champagne you mentioned very much as well! Cheers! Thanks watching and weighing in.

Well said.

Grazie mille Gina! Appreciate the kind words! Selosse is a special producer! Nothing quite like it. Happy New Year!

Agreed! I’ve been trying to taste more from growers as well. 👍🍾

Can I ask your thoughts on Comtes de Champagne? Do you rate this Grand Cru alongside Dom Pérignon / Cristal / Krug?

Great tips! Did you ever tasted a Ulisses Collin Champagne?? I think it’s one of the best years after year, thought they are hard to find …
Thank you! Have not tried it yet. I’ll have to change that! 👍🍾

Sorry I did this video 2 years ago. Not sure I understand the comment.
