    Just getting started so how to make tongs is very important. If I can get the process down I can make them cheaper than I can buy them. Whether just starting or experienced cost I would think would be an issue. Quality also of course. I don't reajjy know for sure but I would think making tongues would be good practice for other forgeing projects. I have to start somewhere might as well be here.

    Hey Roy! I really liked the way you simplified the process into the step down sets. Going from on side of the anvil to the other and creating the space for the boss before offsetting it makes it look so much easier to keep things uniform! Thank you so much!

    Question: How many ways are there to make tongs? Answer: How many blacksmiths are there? I learn something new every time I see a tong video. I really like the method you teach here to establish the boss length before doing the boss set down. Also, it is genius to make the additional set down on the rein to help keep the bar parallel. Thanks again for the many helpful videos.

    Between this and the BAD Tong Method for Beginners video, I feel pretty confident about giving your methodology a try with a lot easier path to success. I've watched other channels make tongs and they all (even "pros") fall victim to warping and twisting that requires extra work to get the job done. That they manage the extra work without pause doesn't make them efficient, just practiced. However, my arms prefer efficiency.

    Thank you again Roy you have just explained why I am having problems creating a good boss. That is aside from my inexperience of course. The edges of my anvil are very rounded from years of someone elses work so I do not get a sharply defined step down like you show. I do have a couple of ASO's and will use one of them next time.

    Been watching tong making videos for months now. Every one has little differences, i’ll just take it all on board, mix it up and try everything to find what works for me! I do agree with the bigger stock to start, tried a 10mm round bar on my first attempt and it was far to thin!

    I have discovered a very important fact: Getting confused when forging your first set of tongs (just fired up the forge with my son for the first time) and combining two methods... leads to some seriously annoying mistakes on my part. so I took a break and will have a go again in a couple days to get them done. Need a tool forge a tool? I am doing that. I am forging my tongs.
    Great video, and will focus on ONLY this method next time.

    I just thought of something else that I wanted to share with you. Only ever made one set of tongs but I made mine by working down the boss area in two places. The front as is always done but also were in your video what you explain as the second set down that is where I placed my second set down. Think pliers, this makes the handles line up great. You prob know this but what do you think would it make the boss to thin. Actually I used a piece of square the size of the boss to do it and put the blank at an angle on that, just how you would normally angle it.

      I never forget the 1/2 inch to metric conversion. In the Norwegian Army the .50 cal Browning machine gun is better known as 12.7 mm machine gun, or just "The 12-7". That was almost 30 years ago, and I still remember :-)

      25mm is an inch.... 12.5mm is 1/2 of that. pretty straight foreward

    • @garyhall867
      @garyhall867 5 років тому

      1 inch = 25.4, 1/2 inch = 12.7 and that is according to my Calculator. So if you divide 25.4 x 2 = 12.7 and that is straight forward.

    yea getting too large a bar its harder then escaping quicksand to squash down on even a proper anvil, so the first bit I started to make ended up it will become a chisel or a prybar when I get around to finishing it. thats the plan anyway
    and yes 25 mm is one inch, its just like the caliber of a gun 25 is one inch 125 mm is 5 inches just like cannons and artillery.

    Ha it is not your fault that people have a short attention span nowadays or that they complain and get their knickers in a twist because they feel the need to give out or correct you. They should politely go and........ So please do not apologize. Everything you said in the video was important.
    But I know exactly what you mean as I also have a teaching style channel. The problem is that media has made the pace so fast these days and my god I just can't watch some channels where they speak like they are on steroids or give you no info what so ever leaving people open to even potentially harming themselves. Click bait is the worse though and should be penalized by UA-cam in my opinion. Well explained video. Have you ever tried 3/8 by folding it on top of itself and forge welding it together? Do you think it may work?

    i can see your trying to be different for difference,s sake , the boss will still elongate when thinned and you can still do that to a different degree with both boss,s you gain nothing , if you chalk up the anvil before hand you have your set in stone measurements, no trained smith guess,s measurements for making tongs .

    • @ChristCenteredIronworks
      @ChristCenteredIronworks  7 років тому

      Edgunsuk everybody has their own method of making tongs as no skilled or trained Smith would guesstimate what they need I could highly disagree with that as I know several master smith that estimate what they need by eye and come out just fine.
