Roy, I actually feel like I can now make a set of bolt jaw tongs with no reservations. No anxiety over what comes next or layout questions etc etc. Your teaching methodology is trustworthy my friend. Thank you.
Ive been searching for a long time, to find someone on UA-cam that is a great instructor on blacksmithing. And i beleive i have finally found one. Thank you for your very instructional videos. Hard to start blacksmithing here in my small town in michigan. Not much around here for training or tools but thanks to you i beleive i can create my own mow thanks
I somehow over time have missed this video on making bolt tongs. Very good demonstration, short, sweet and to the point. Your method dispenses with some of the more complicated means of making bolt tongs out there. I'll definitely use this way in the future bolt tongs I make. Well done!
Got flat & wolf jaws...this is my next project ..first thing tomorrow..👍 Keep these quality instructional videos coming.. For beginners like me they are invaluable..thanks again
Beginner blacksmith here,Ive been watching tongue videos trying to wrap my head around them and the process.Still apprehensive about trying to make them...but not now, what a great video and explanation of the process,by far the best tongue how to video out there, thankyou sir!
I finished my first pair of Bolt tongs following this video. I think they turned out great. I will start another pair for bigger stock tomorrow. I need the practice drawing out... thanks for sharing this.
My concern was always with the offsetting of where the rivet goes. It never occurred to me to put the rivet in first and hammer the jaws into place. Thank you so much for the demonstration. GOD bless
I really was avoiding your page because of the Christian theme, but i decided that was closed mindedness and man i am impressed as a brand-new blacksmith i have learned alot from you and want to thank you for sharing your valuable knowledge and look forward to learning more about the craft from you. Thank You for all you do.
Great vid Roy, am really impressed with the way you have integrated metric into your videos. This beginner blacksmith in Australia is loving it! God bless
It seems most of my blacksmithing questions have answers in the form of a video. Lol I tried forging a set of bolt jaw tongs today and ran into a several issues. I ended up bending the rivet which made the tongs really funky and then I left the tongs to cool and they locked up on me. After some tweaking and adjusting I scrapped the tongs and am starting over. Live and learn!!!
I have been trying to make box jaw tongs with no success so far, tomorrow, I will give this a shot. It looks more like something I can do.... Thank you for the video. I appreciate it...
Awesome video. I'm just starting to imagine myself forging instead of just stock removal.. your a good teacher and injoy your thoughts, again great video and thanks for this lesson buddy
Great video Roy! I'll be out in my shop working on some Mokume Gane today and I think I know what I'll do in between soaks now lol. Anyway I hope you heal soon and know that I'm praying for you just like so many others are as well. God bless you and Jessica and keep forging Sir.
+David L. Heyder Jr. That is awesome to hear! Thank you for all your kind thoughts and prayers Jessica and I really do appreciate those. Look forward to catching up with everyone on the livestream on Friday. God bless you
First time on your channel. I am impressed with your smithing skills! Just getting started in forging and need some tongs. Offshore vise grips don't cut it.. Thanks for the tutorial and will try your methods. This should be hilarious 😃
I started trying to make my first pair of these last night, but I only had 1/4 by 1 1/2, so I had to start by reducing the cross-section of my stock. I've started drawing out the reins, but my hammer hand ran out of strength at that point. I'm hoping to finish them up tonight.
Hi, I am new to blacksmithing, and have been watching some of your videos. Thank you for making them. They are great! Can you tell me what type of steel you are using to make these bolt jaw tongs?
You know I need to use your phrase on myself, "and then be done with it" I swear I over hammer things all the time, even though it's done on strike 15, I will just want to keep hammering until strike 27. It's some kind of blacksmithing OCD.
+Justin Wells the giveaway will be for the knife tongs that I made in last Friday nights demo. So be sure to stop in on Friday for the livestream! God bless you Justin for taking the time to watch bud
I don't think I ever said anything bad about your videos as.I am a fan but going on metrics distracts my thinking as our inch and feet must distract across the pond...Sudjest posting measurements would work for my happiness.....But either way your videos are helping me learn. Thanks Roy.
I like and found Torbjorn Ahman method of making bolt tongs way more effective and practical. Mainly because you leave very little material for the vbits leaving them weak and unable to really wrap around the square stock.
Just use round stock. Score it so you have enough length on each side when in place. Heat the tongs. Heat the stock you scored. Place tong hinge plates atop one another on top a bolster of proper thickness. Place round stock into the two halves. Break off the stock and upset the exposed end. Flip over and with out that bolster , head the other. Finish off the flat heads with a cupping tool to round them/dome them. Allow to cool. Work the reins with a bit of oil on the hinge. They will loosen up.
Probably the best explanation and instructions for making tongs on the internet
Best video yet for making these.
I know what I'm doing tonight. Thanks for another great instructional video.

You must be a perfect teacher. Its right to the point. And seems very doable!

Thanks Roy great lesson time for me to try my hand at it now
Lol. just tried it. Got 1/4 x 1 inch stock.
Burned 10 lbs of charcoal.
Managed to draw the reigns down a whole inch! 😂😂
Had a ton of fun though
Roy love your video's and cannot wait to get stated. Just need to get the forge and anvil than I can rock and roll.
Good job!!.
Sweet, measurements in metric! Appreciate it!
Sweet, I know what I’m making tomorrow
Thanks Roy 👍👍🍻🍻
+Ryan Talbot that's awesome to hear I'm glad I could inspire you to make something :-)
First time on your channel. I am impressed with your smithing skills! Just getting started in forging and need some tongs. Offshore vise grips don't cut it.. Thanks for the tutorial and will try your methods. This should be hilarious 😃
This was a great video by the way, I learned a lot.
Another good one sir.. keep them coming lol. I'll have a shop full of tools sooner or later.
+John Coffee you just got to get busy brother! Your shop will be full in no time LOL
Great video ))) Thank you )))
So what makes bolt jaw tongs so infamous? And this is the best video I've seen on making any type of tongs
Love it!
Thanks Roy.
very good video Roy!
im even going to try this out :)
Good video. Just finished making my first set of tongs by following this video. They're of course not as pretty as yours, but they are functional.
Nice job!Thx for sharing this video. Have a blessed day in Jesus name!
Suddenly it all seemed doable (learnable 😉)
I started trying to make my first pair of these last night, but I only had 1/4 by 1 1/2, so I had to start by reducing the cross-section of my stock. I've started drawing out the reins, but my hammer hand ran out of strength at that point. I'm hoping to finish them up tonight.
Hi, I am new to blacksmithing, and have been watching some of your videos. Thank you for making them. They are great! Can you tell me what type of steel you are using to make these bolt jaw tongs?
Love the videos only question is how many tongs do you have and do you have a pair that you use more than others
I was glad to find a Christian Smith. "Praise the LORD".
great work roy would they hold railroad nails or would they need extra width in the rounded area
When you set your jaws with that 5/8 square bar have ever use a bolt to give your tongs teeth to hold a part? Great video. Thank you...
Gonna have at maken a pair now
Roy, have you got a video showing how you draw out the reins for tongs made this way?
Amigo, vou construir uma identica a sua ,muito facio de fazer.
Really cool video. Do you sell your tongs?
Not currently, but we occasionally give them away in livestreams.
@@ChristCenteredIronworks cool figured I’d ask. Thanks for all your hard work. God bless
Would I be able to do this without a post vise?
Question. I go to the horn to put the curve in. Is it easier or is there an advantage to using a cone hardy?
+scott elliott the only advantage to using a cone Hardy is the ability to watch the curve take shape easier.
Christ Centered Ironworks makes sense. Thanks
Roy what is the weight of the hammer you use ???
How do you make your rivets so round
There is a complete video series on riveting :-)
Why do you use the vertical bic instead of the horn
Do you put on how did you put that bolt in I didn't get that.
Yes a entire series on the tongs and rivets in the form of a playlist :-) thank you for taking the time to watch God bless
You know I need to use your phrase on myself, "and then be done with it" I swear I over hammer things all the time, even though it's done on strike 15, I will just want to keep hammering until strike 27. It's some kind of blacksmithing OCD.
A Give away that sounds fun what are you giving away
+Justin Wells the giveaway will be for the knife tongs that I made in last Friday nights demo. So be sure to stop in on Friday for the livestream! God bless you Justin for taking the time to watch bud
Christ Centered Ironworks Thanks for the speedy reply I will be there btw thanks for the bolt tong demo I think im gonna try to make a pair
I don't think I ever said anything bad about your videos as.I am a fan but going on metrics distracts my thinking as our inch and feet must distract across the pond...Sudjest posting measurements would work for my happiness.....But either way your videos are helping me learn. Thanks Roy.
I, on the other hand, was pleasantly surprised by it.
I like and found Torbjorn Ahman method of making bolt tongs way more effective and practical. Mainly because you leave very little material for the vbits leaving them weak and unable to really wrap around the square stock.
How come everything I forge looks nothing like what I was aiming for?
Please! No more metric and sae measures! Pick one! Lol great video
Naw that won't happen still going to use both...
Why couldn't we see the riveting?
Just use round stock. Score it so you have enough length on each side when in place. Heat the tongs. Heat the stock you scored. Place tong hinge plates atop one another on top a bolster of proper thickness. Place round stock into the two halves. Break off the stock and upset the exposed end. Flip over and with out that bolster , head the other. Finish off the flat heads with a cupping tool to round them/dome them.
Allow to cool. Work the reins with a bit of oil on the hinge. They will loosen up.
Why didn't you show installing the rivet????
