Hi Blacksmith! Being 73 years old my muscles dont allow me to hammer out a pair of tongs so I have done it the easy way, I cut out a blank with the plasma cutter and taper it down not a lot of work involved.
I am trying to get a camera that I can do a video on for all us old timers.
I loved Smithing as boy with my old grandad bob wilson, of Errol Nr dundee. That was in the 60s but great fun and a great learning curve.
I am now doing it as a hobby, So I watch your Channel and also Black bear Forge. Just great entertainment. Thanks for the video.
that anvil rings like no other
Your camera person does a great job because they understand to set exposure on the glowing steel which makes seeing what you are doing much more visible. Kudos to them. I hope other channels would learn from your example.
Thanks brother this was excellent. Doing my first 5 day forging intensive in a couple weeks this really helped to hear the language and see you going through the whole process. We will be making these then along with other tools

Once I tried to pick up a chisel. Unfortunately it was still hot and for the next days everything I touched with the two fingers felt like smooth plastic. Though it gave me good oportunities for pranks including "too hot" food.

I really appreciate these videos. I have no previous knowledge about forging, but it is something I have always found fascinating. I have somewhat access to a decent forge and will try out these guides eventually. What I find confusing is what kind of steel to buy. There are a lot of different sizes and types of steel, but I assume that there are standardized types and sizes. I would really appreciate if you in the description wrote what size and type you used. Another idea is to consider a guide, written, or in video on how to understand steel types and sizes? (what would you use for different kinds of products etc.?)
I'm a year late to the party but here i go anyway.
Local steel suppliers often only supply mild steel. If it's sold for welding/construction purposes it'll be mild.
Mild is perfect for most blacksmithing(like these tongs) as it forges nicely. As you get into blacksmithing youll want to get yourself a nice assortment of round/square/flat bars. But for now pick 2 or 3 round bars in the 1/4-3/4 inch range.
For some tools you'll want hardenable steels though. Some steel suppliers do carry hardable steels but most buy them online. if you want i can link you some depending on your location. . 1045/4140 are most common for general tools, 1075/80/84 or 80crv2 are recommended for knives.
There's MANY different ways of naming steel that can get very confusing. What i mentioned is the American nomenclature system. if you google "XXXX steel equivalents" you can find the equivalent steels in other systems.

I’ve watched more blacksmith videos than is healthy probably but in all that time you have the most fantastic anvil. That thing is a beast! I understand this video is very old but if anyone reads this and knows maker and approx size of that anvil I am very curious. Gorgeous anvil for real.

Hey there! I’m working on building a forge at my house, and I was wondering if you know anything about how I should design it? I don’t mean to bother you, but I don’t have many places to visit for information. I have access to a lot of brick, and a cement mixer, but beyond that I have no clue what I’m doing.
Also, would a standard forge be able to heat up a long bit of metal evenly, or do you need something more specialised in your experience? Thank you for your time if you choose to reply to this!

Another fantastic video. One thing about tongs; Is there a reason for different ends on tong tines? Some have ball ends, some just tapered out and some curved. Is it just for looks. With what I do they all seem to work. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. Oh, I enjoy seeing your back ground. Your tools and projects. Your shop would be much better to visit than Disney Land.
It's mostly just personal preference, some people like the ends to flick out so they know where their hands sit if that makes sense, I prefer them plain so nothing to dig in to your palm
Do you ever use beeswax to help protect the steel from rust?
do you use a side blast or under blast forge
What steel are you using for the tongs?
Are these being quenched in water or oil?
What kinda pen are using?

I think I´ll just grab some old tongs - I usually get them for 1€ each - and disasseble and reshape them.
Would you need to temper them as well?
Mild steel, no hardening going on here.

Nice job, could you do something about the ring in the anvil, hard to hear you with that ringing. And you didn't tell the people which way to turn the tong for 2nd set down. It varies for left and right hand tong holding. Just a thought.

Started out promising! But I had to give up… the ring of the anvil was just too much in my earphones at the lowest volume.
So you need tongs to make tongs
I’m a sissy , I have to wear gloves because I always burn myself 🤣you would figure that 42 years I would be tougher at it but my 57 year old hands are still tender lol

He is using tongs, to make tongs.
You can make them without using tongs, just use longer stocks at the beginning and trim them off when the reins get long enough.
