  • Winter weather has not been good for flying PPG. Time to give the other hobby some attention. Picked up a High Standard Supermatic Citation (old school target .22 pistol). Shot it for the first time and did a brief comparison to my Ruger 22/45 Mark III. The High Standard is a dream to shoot.

    The best memory I have is my dad taking me to the range for the first time. I was like 10-12 ish. He broke out his heavily modified Citation. Taught me the rules of a firearm. Put 1 round in the mag and said "here you go, there is only 1 in it so don't be afraid after you shoot it, it's ok, I'm right behind you." Had to find an auction to get the same gun, the same one I will teach my kid with....

    I have an all original Tournament Supermatic 106 that I bought new in 1968. Love the heft, the trigger and its smooth cycling. It out shoots my Buckmark.

      Had a Buckmark a number of years ago. Never should have sold it. It shot better the Ruger 22/45 without any mods, but it did not have a threaded barrel.

    • @nickdipaolofan5948
      @nickdipaolofan5948 3 роки тому

      @@jasoncampbell1843 I'm just curious, what is the advantage to having a threaded barrel? I get that you can put a suppresser on it, but my question is why does that matter? .22s are pretty low decibel anyway. If you just shoot at the range with much louder guns or just shoot way out in the middle of nowhere, what would you need a suppresser for?

    • @jasoncampbell1843
      @jasoncampbell1843  3 роки тому

      @@nickdipaolofan5948 I don’t typically shoot at a range. Suppressor makes it hearing safe. Additionally, it makes introducing people to shooting much easier. I have introduced quite a few. Hearing safe means no ear muffs. No ear muffs means I can talk, and they can hear me. It’s more natural, and they feel more comfortable and at ease. This has been especially helpful for youth shooters. For me, it’s just about being hearing safe with no muffs.

      @@jasoncampbell1843 sounds reasonable. Thanks, that makes sense. I personally only have access to a public gun range so there is no point to using a suppressor in my shooting, but that makes sense why you would do that.

    Beautiful Hi Standard! I just recently found one identical to yours here, however it has the button to release the barrel and it says Military under the serial number(1974 era). My other S series Supermatic Citation(1981/82)has the screw that holds on the barrel like yours here. Both came with 3 original magazines. I really like you showing different now available ammo used with it. It helps me quite a bit. I also acquired recently a 1950 Colt Match Target 6” with 3 magazines, it shoots very well like the citations. I also bring with them to shoot my S&W Model 41 Performance Center, S&W 10 shot pre lock 17-8 revolver, Browning Buckmark Hunter, Challenger lll and Ruger Mark lV Hunter. They are all so much fun to just lay out, look at, handle, load and of course shoot. I hope to do a video soon when the weather warms up. You have inspired my kids and I to make it happen. They love to shoot the .22,s as well. Hopefully soon my wife will join in the fun as well because they really are fun. Great Video!

    I literally just started shooting and my first gun to use was a High standard. Weighs a ton but really has set the level for other guns. Don’t know why and I shouldn’t have a saying here as a rookie but I just love them. Just feels rock solid and I know all bad series I shoot is entirely my fault so I can focus on breathing and trigger control, ’cause I know it’s not the pistol that messes up.

    There is a SW model 622 on gunbroker for $430and a model 2206 for $575. It’s widely believed that the 422, 622, and 2506 were discontinued because they were so darn accurate with great triggers that they were killing sales of the model 41. I have a 422 and it’s phenomenally accurate and reliable. I would always pick one of these used S&Ws before any new models out currently. I am befuddled why this design isn’t still made, I’ve had my 422 for almost 40 years and it still functions flawlessly.

    I have the same pistol. Mine was made in 1971. They were the premier .22 pistol for "Bullseye" shooting, even more popular than the S&W Model 41. Amazing quality. The High Standard "Military" model (which yours is) was designed to imitate the feel and weight of the Model 1911 Government Model.
    Bullseye competition had three "stages". .22, any centerfire over .32 caliber, and .45. Many competitors liked the High Standard for the .22 stage and used the Model 1911 for the other two stages, thereby having only two guns for all three stages and all with familiar weights and grip angles.
    These pistols have no feed ramp and depend entirely on the magazine lips for feeding cartridges. The magazine lips are critical for reliable operation. If they get bent, cartridges will not feed. There is a little tool sold that sets the feed lips of these magazines. Every High Standard owner needs one. (and NO, I have no interest in the company that sells them)
    Also, get some extra magazines. In my experience the factory mags are superior. They are more expensive, but worth it. I keep a "watch" for them on Ebay and buy one whenever I get a good price.

      I found a Hi Standard Supermatic Citation and Citation ll at my local place I’ve been going to since the 1980,s. I bought the Supermatic Citation with 4 extra magazines @ $40 each. The Citation ll is still there for sale both do not have a round barrel. However they are both extremely accurate and shoot really well. They seem to be of the same or at least similar quality as my S&W Performance Center model 41, Buckmark Hunter, Browning Target Champion and Woodsman Target which all are a real joy to shoot. Great video, I wonder what model mine is and the other Citation ll because both have different shape barrels but are equally as beautiful and of the same length.

      @@joshbrekke6374 The model number should be marked on the frame. For example, Mine says "High Standard Supermatic Citation Model 107 Military" The "military" refers to the grip angle, which was designed to duplicate the 1911.
      High Standard produced multiple, interchangeable barrels for the Supermatic series. Bull barrel (round) flat sided bull barrel, "Space Gun" barrels, etc., and in various lengths. Various barrels are available online. They aren't cheap!
      Quality wise, yes, High Standards equal the Model 41 (IMO). I think they have better triggers and factory sights. Remember that the Model 41 was developed to compete with the Supermatics. High Standards ruled the "Bullseye" pistol market at the time and S&W wanted in on that. I'm a S&W collector and "fan boy" but I don't have a Model 41. I prefer the High Standard
      If the magazines are original High Standard, $40 each is a really good deal.
      High Standard recommends against using high velocity ammo in these pistols. I use either Wolf Match Target or CCI Standard Velocity Target.
      Get yourself one of the "High Standard magazine lip adjustment tools". You can find them on Ebay. Magazine adjustment is critical on High Standards.
      Enjoy! You have one the best .22 pistols ever made.

      @@garyK.45ACP thank you, the magazines I got are OEM. They have 5 more at that price I plan to get with the Citation ll. I have not shot a 10 round S&W .22 revolver yet however I have watched many videos and my best friend has on I will be shooting soon hopefully. I have a BarKeep and it’s ok however I suspect the S&W is a great shooter I will enjoy. I really enjoy shooting.22 pistol by myself and with my kids. Yes sir, I run CCI standard and Blazer and it runs great. I tried many others and they run great as well. My Challenger lll is ammo sensitive though but once the right stuff is in it man it’s a great shooter too. What is your experience with the S&W 10 shot revolvers?

      @@joshbrekke6374 Original High Standard mags on Ebay are listed from $60-$120 each. I have not paid that much for them, but most I have bought are $40-45. They aren't getting any cheaper. And most stuff you buy on Ebay will have a shipping cost and you pay your state sales tax. So an over the counter price of $40, for original mags, is a good deal.
      I was disappointed with after market mags except the "Mitchell High Standard" stainless mags, but they aren't cheap either.

    I traded my Ruger 22/45 mark 4 in on a like new Browning Challenger lll with extra magazines. It shoots a lot better and fits my hand perfectly. I refuse to upgrade at hi expense if I don’t have to. Plus the Ruger didn’t fit my hand well or shoot very accurate. I loved cleaning it better then my Mark 1, ll & lll. Maby I will find an upgraded one later after I get a pre lock S&W 617 ten shot first

    I have had a HS Victor E. Hartford for over 30 years and never fired it. Mostly due to its pristine condition and need for standard velocity 22LR. During the pandemic, I considered selling it and received some quotes at ~$500. I recently started fiddling with it, dry aiming it with its great target sights. Selling it would have been the stupidest thing I would have done gunwise and would have been a life long regret.

      Another big issue is I live in CA. You can't even buy a Ruger MK 22LR here unless it's from a private party transfer. We are limited to Buckmarks, (not all models) and a few other 22LR guns of lower quality construction...

      @@jasoncampbell1843 Your Citation has one major advantage over my Victor. The Victor has a full length top rib. This requires the slide height to be shorter and it is much more difficult to grasp with thumb and index finger to rack it back. The Citation is a good match for your 22/45. Hopefully, you have a 1911 45 ACP to also shoot in Bullseye. I'll take your advice and my Victor will be a keeper.
