*AFTERSUN* deserves its placement here. No other movie this year affected me so deeply. It’s a masterpiece, so tender, so honest, so deep, so simple, and the way that emotion creeps up on you to overwhelm you at the end… I can’t forget it.
I highly agree, The rearrangement or the movie version of under pressure in the last scene was soul crushing, no words to describe it really 🥀
The under pressure scene literally blew my mind. It is the moment where everything comes together and clicks. It's haunting seeing adult Sophie turn into child Sophie in the rave scene as Calum drifts away from her. It's such a great film

Aftersun was such a gut-punch of a film. Expressing a feeling so personal yet so universal as well. What a great year for film!
even though as an irishman I'm glad to see the banshees of inisherin and paul mescal get recognised, I'm glad to see international/non-english language movies like decision to leave and an cailín ciúin get more mainstream attention instead of all the movies being just American or British. Yes! Aftersun is the best of the year! It affected me in ways I didn’t think were possible. I literally called my dad and told him how much I love him afterwards.
"Maverick" was an example of a sequel that was better, or just as enjoyable as the original. It was more mature in tone, and ensured that the characters had grown over the past three decades.
I want to see it because everything about it makes me think it shouldn't work.
The original was very mediocre the sequel is pretty great

Maverick was a pastiche of the first film. I read it as a comedy. As the first film should be seen as. The characters were so cardboard and generalised you couldn't think anything else.
Happy Christmas, Karsten, thank you for uploading today! I really adored "Aftersun", Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio were phenomenal together. While not much happens in the way of a plot, it's still a Brilliant character piece about how our memories of our parents change from our childhood to our adulthood. As we get older, we realise that they have their own hang ups that we were too young to properly understand at the time.

I'm so happy I stumbled across your channel and letterboxd...the little movie that could is also my favourite film of the year. I think I've re-watched the ending more than 10 times, still being destroyed by it every single time. As a filmmaker, I was truly educated in subtlety, pace, framing and narrative technique. As a viewer, I was moved in a way that has left me changed, forever. Gosh, I freakin love that film!

I'm so happy you put Aftersun at the top of your list. Paul Mescal is amazing. I first saw him in his tiny role in The Lost Daughter and found his truthfulness riveting. I then made a point to see all he has done this far, and he is my new favourite actor. He is consistently superb.

I just saw this wonderful little French dramedy called M'orbius. Highly recommend it!
I'm so happy to see Aftersun get the number one spot. I adored that movie. For better or worse, I can see both myself and my dad in Paul Mescal's character, but I can also see young me in Sophie, too. Probably my favorite movie of the 2020s so far.
Damn, your list rules. I've gone through so many this year and yours is the only one to have a fair number of films I haven't even heard of. I'm gonna watch all of them.

Aftersun was so good. I couldn't believe Decision to Leave. Had me yelling at the screen at the end.
Loved Nope, Tar. Haven't seen Were all Going to the Worlds fair, but it's on my list.
Loved The Fablemans also. Top Gun. The Banshees of Inisherin just hit home for me.
Bones and All was great. I tried to explain to people about the movie and told them it's a must see,
but the looks I got. I've seen most of the movies on your list, but the ones I haven't I certainly will.

After a lean few years due to the pandemic, it feels like we've had an (almost) full menu of films this year. The quality overall in both Hollywood and World cinema also seems to be up.
I realize that this came out literally less than a week before 2023, but I seriously LOVED Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. It was so well made overall and holy shit, the wolf was so goddamn terrifying. Puss’s existential dread is shown so well and puts me right into the character. All together, though, it was just so fucking fun to watch! Honestly top 3 this year for me
hell yeah! so happy to see we're all going to the world's fair so high on your list! it's my number one film of the year. i've seen it like 6 times and it's just as powerful with each watch. jane schoenbrun is a truly brilliant filmmaker and i cannot wait for their next film! world's fair is an all-time favorite for me. it's sad to see that it wasn't too well received by audiences because it's a pretty challenging film at times, but if you really give yourself to it, you'll see how genius it is.
Everything Everywhere is easily my favourite film of the year and of the decade so far, watching it the first time was probably my favourite theatre experience ever. Just the way it blends the absurdist comedy, with the existential nihilism and the family dynamics truly hit me on every level, masterpiece

I was anticipating Aftersun for a couple months before it’s release but It didn’t move me very much when I saw it in the cinema, I have a feeling it’s gonna hit hard later in life when I lose my parents too

My favourite would be All Quiet on the Western Front, directed by Edward Berger. Is it a story we´ve heard before? Yes, but I find it a very painfully relevant film and not just with the war in Ukraine. What I liked is that for me at least, it didnt try to be pro or anti war, it was just being honest about it. And the fact it´s the first actual German interpretation of the novel really grounds its focus. Not to mention the mind boggling cinematography from James Friend, the amazing production design and sound and just how nice it is seeing Daniel Bruhl going back to his homeland to contribute to its culture
Edit:Ok so the Oscars happened, granted it´s still my fav but the praise this got from awards is a bit excessive like it did not need to win Best Original Score
This movie was a standout to me as well...I liked it better than 1917

Still trying to figure out my list and watch a few more before the year ends, but we share a lot of them. Everything Everywhere All at Once is absolutely my number one though, followed closely by The Whale.

Can't disagree with this list, really captures what an exciting year this has been for film imo. It's especially been a really good year for unconventional/envelope-pushing horror with Bones and All & Nope. I'm so glad I got to see both of those in theater. They're going to become classics going forward.
I haven’t seen Karsten get as personal as he did in that Aftersun part since the Synecdoche, New York video. That was cool.

Hi Karsten! In the small chance that you read this comment I just wanted to say thank you for all your videos. As an aspiring filmmaker in High School, your videos fuel my passion for cinema. I actually recently created a short animated film with my friend Justin Dawson which we posted on this channel and made into various festivals, and just got it on Letterboxd yesterday (woohoo!) but we made it with zero budget and zero resources (literally all drawing and Premiere Pro). I was wondering what you would recommend our next steps are in our journey, for example what equipment should we buy, how do we balance filmmaking with school and work etc. Anyways, thank you so much!

Top Gun Maverick hit different for me because me and my dad been waiting years for it and It’s been my first year in the Navy so I felt extra Hooyah boot watching it.

YIPPEE!! aftersun is everything i love about film, truly one of my favourite films ever. i had the pleasure of watching it in the cinema ENTIRELY ALONE! and man, what an experience. i was grossly sobbing to say the least. i don't remember the last time i was that personally, poignantly affected by a film. my favourite film of 2022 -- and one of the most remarkable ending sequences i've ever watched. thinking about aftersun makes me well up. charlotte wells i fucking love you

I've seen aftersun like 3x now and I'm still blown away every time. I'd be super interested to see what it would be like to watch the movie if you compiled the home videos, watched that first, and then watched the full movie b/c I'm just realizing that the video recorder is Sophie's pov and shows us how she, as a kid, sees her dad. She has that "spidey sense" that there's something wrong, but, at the same time, she's always known her dad to be sad, desultory, and a bit impulsive. This time it sticks with her because whatever is "wrong" is more palpable and because, later on, she'll realize that vacation was her last memory of her dad.
I thought it was a movie about understanding your parents and how we as kids don't have the vocabulary or experience to ever understand what our parents are going through, but the moment we come of age, in this case when Sophie also turns 31 and has a family, she finally has some picture of why her dad was depressed. I can talk about this movie for hours, but lol sorry for this soliloquoy of a comment. Should have won best pic.

the banshees of insherin is top for me - i also watched leaving las vegas this year for the first time (i know its from ‘95) and it quickly became one of my favourite pieces of cinema EVER
Leaving Las Vegas is a amazing film....I saw it back when it came out and is still in my memory

@@HolywaffleMC I have. I hated it for the same reason I hear most critics hated The Son (glossing over the kid with depression to focus on the parent’s catharsis).

Gun to my head I might on any given day say Park Chan-wook is my favorite director so it's been painful to me that Decision to Leave just didn't do it for me. It was a beautiful movie that as a film still stood head and shoulders above most of what I saw this year but I just didn't have that visceral emotional reaction to it that everyone else did. Which is doubly hard to grapple with because every other Park Chan-wook movie HAS done that for me. All of the praise for it being the greatest love story of the year even started to get under my skin because I just couldn't seem to get there. Hoping a rewatch can clear up how I feel about the movie and maybe reveal something I missed the first time through.
Same story here , if I had to describe the movie in one word for me , it would be 'lukewarm'. I loved the direction , but the relationship/plot just didn't do it for me , the "chemistry" or "romance" just felt forced & coupled w the overly convoluted story beats that just gave you a hint that there might be something "more" ... it further pulled me away from investing in th drama of the relationship which I didn't buy into in the first place .. all of which is a shame , because I found the themes & direction to be nothing short of brilliance ...

@@achrafmaaden6263 Spot on! It was almost frustrating how beautiful individual scenes and moments were set up in that regard. The beach scenes at the end are absolutely breathtaking in concept and execution...but it's hard for me to get there with them narratively.
Steven Spielberg is still an absolute genius and I’m so glad he’s still making films especially one as good as the Fabelmans
I really struggled with Tár, I have very mixed opinions about it. I was really impressed with the way the movie went in the third act but for the most part I felt like I needed a PhD to watch it. I felt quite out of place in the cinema 😂

I just watched Decision To Leave for the first time - absolutely knocked my socks off. It's the best film I've seen not just in 2022, but also in 2023 so far. Absolutely spectacular. Obviously nothing can top Oldboy, but this comes close. What a movie.

Aftersun made me cry a little initially. After finishing it, my husband asked what it was about and as I started explaining it, I was sobbing. That movie is so good, but definitely prepare the tissues. 😅
