I have one of the Nikon 135 2.8 pre ai lenses for my film cameras and I really like it.
Back in the heyday of the 35mm slr, the salesman would always try to up sell you to the 135mm lens. It was always reasonably priced, so there were lots out there.
Then, years later, the wide angle lenses came into vogue, and everybody wanted them. It was then that the 135s went out of favor, and turned up in large numbers on the market and cheaply. Now they seem to be making a come back of sorts.
Sorry,Matt, if I bored you with my musings.LOL

Thanks Michael, not at all. Your musings are always very welcome. You can educate me and any other younger viewers. I know they are cheaper than most lenses. (and I remember wide being popular when I started out with my photography)

I'm also a model photographer and don't use this focal length. It gives you a good compression of the background, and in classical photo theory, you are also right, but it also gives you a very distant view of an image, like an observer from a distance. I like this a little. But nowadays, everyone is used to shorter focal lengths because of pictures taken by a smartphone. From the models, I often hear that they like the colors and then ask which camera it is ;-) However, in general, models are more interested in images than cameras, which is how they should be.

Yes 135mm is normally too long for me too but the girls do seem to like it. I agree it's what you do with the gear that counts :)

Very enjoyable video, great example photos, and a real nostalgia trip for me because back when I took up photography in my school days, a 135 was the first additional lens I bought after the 50mm that came with my camera. As someone else noted, almost every brand made one and many of them were very reasonably priced. It was, and as you note still is, an excellent choice for head shots -- the fact that you don't have to get right up in the model's face for a tight crop helps avoid exaggerated noses and chins.
For rangefinder use, did you ever try the Leitz 135mm f/2.8 Tele-Elmarit with magnifying "goggles"? It was an awkward setup (which helps keep the used prices reasonable by Leica standards) but the goggles made the rangefinder and viewfinder images large enough for accurate focusing and fairly easy composition. I never owned one, but was able to borrow one once from the regional Leica rep when I worked for a newspaper and needed to make some very quiet photos with my M4-2 of a temperamental star rehearsing in a theater. Got away with it, too!
Of course the real magic here is not the 135mm focal length but the 15-degree angle of view (on the 36mm side of a 35mm camera frame) and you can get this same look with a 90mm lens on an APS-C camera or a 150-180mm on a medium-format camera. But now that you're obsessed with large format photography, I'm surprised you're not out hunting for a 500mm f/5.5 Schneider Tele-Xenar, which would give you the same viewing angle on a 4x5 camera... no guarantees that you wouldn't need to add some bellows extensions, though!

Thanks James, great I could hit a chord with you on this one and thanks for you seeming endless knowledge as usual! Models seem to love this but I think I'm more of a 90mm max guy for ease of use yet still pretty shots. If you looked closely I was using a 150mm V lens on a 645 Hassy H2 so I look forward to developing those. Yes for LF the "best" I've got is my Nikkor 300mm f9 so we were using that with the Patreon guys. See a video soon for the antics!

Nice one Matt - I have two 135mm lenses, the 135 M Elmar, like yours, which is sharp, but lacks contrast and a bit of a pain to use on a M rangefinder. The other is an Olympus OM 135mm f/2.8 which is superb - sharp but not clinical, easy to focus and use on a SL! Great even wide open. Going to drag both out for a shoot soon.

For the last decade or so, I had mostly shoot with my 70-200 2.8 for portrait (200 for full body), but shooting on M body had taken me back to the 50mm days. However, I do own both a Hektor 135 f4 and a Elmarit 135 2.8 with goggles. I don't use neither of them much because they are so bulky, but I do like a good compression shot. I found myself taking out the collapsible 90mm out a but more. As crazy as it sounds, all three of those lenses together costed me less than $450, and are all Leica!

Hey Rex! Sorry for my late answer here. Yes these lenses are great value but less suited to RF work.. well the 90mm is OK (results pay off for the effort). Thomas on Patreon uses his 90 f2 Pre like mine a lot on his M3.

    Hi Matt✌
Great video as I know it from you.👌I used to do a lot with 135, maybe the Canon 2/135 L tells you a dream lens is looking for its equal. But what I found even more interesting was the Steinheil München QUINAR 2.8/135 VL a wonderful bokeh with a great swirl effect, but also very hard to find, if at all a very good specimen in good condition. And I have one of them but it was just a matter of luck😉😁

Starting around 3:54 of this video, was that Amy that you've photographed before? Her style is amazing. And one of my favorite lenses is the Hasselblad 120mm F5.6, which when shot on my Sony A7IV, retains that 120mm. I also have a copy of a Vivitar 135mm that is incredible and was only $30 on Ebay. Great video, Matt. And one reason I like this video so much is that lenses are such a huge part of great photographs. Much more so than the type of camera I feel.

Thank you. Yes well spotted Amy is in this video. I love her look so I invited her to help at one of my recent workshops. I love the Hassy 120mm f4 Macro. My most used Hassy lens. Thanks for the feedback, yes I agree. I just love the Leica SL to mount the lenses too.

There is something about that 135mm lenses. Have the series of Konica and olympus lenses. I would almost state that the 135 are the sharpest of the bunch.

Look forward to the Polaroid episode to come. The E series lenses are not Nikkor’s. They are Nikon E series. They were designed and perceived as not worthy to carry the Nikkor name. I use the 50mm E series lens and it’s great but again not branded as Nikkor

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  28 днів тому +1

Thanks, sorry for the typo. Yes the 135mm E is a little different in that it's basically the 135mm AIS with the same coatings. As you say all others are lesser lenses. The 135 E still has the lighter more plastic build but the optics are OK. I have the 28/50/100 E lenses. They can all take nice photos.

Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 is another very good choice - much smaller and lighter than the proper 135's and better than the E series IMO. Mine is a 1973 model but the later AI and AIS ones are great as well. Quite cheap too, they aren't rare.

Thanks and yes very nice. I considered them but I have a few nice 90s already so I didn't want to get a similar focal length. (I have the 100mm E too )

Hi Matt, I was not a fan of the 135mm’for’portraits finding it a little too long but true that your collection of wonderful models makes me think twice to it and I,will try some shoots on my side. About the lenses I would add also for small and light packages the canon ltm 135mm f 3.5 which is rather good for portrait full aperture as you don’t t need a crispy lense on the edges and - personal feeling - is more pretty than the Leica ( I hate the form factor of it with the tripod screw). For Nikon users I didn t know this pre AI model quite big and you also have the ai or ai-s ones which are very similar to the E serie one. If you have more money ( but its price decreases a lot as it s not compatible with the ftz adaptors for Nikon hybrid cameras) you have the wonderful 135 f2 DC which is a beast but more adapted to the Leica SL’due to its size and weight. The 105mm’f2 DC is also a good choice if you love the portrait but it s out of subject here. These two last lenses includes a diaph ring and a DC capability to adjust the bokeh and are perfectly usable in manual mode. This makes them quite unique in Nikon line. See you and congratulation for your always excellent job.

    Hello Matt.
From a focal point of view, I clearly prefer the 90 (see the 75) for tele portraits. From a personal point of view, I find that the 135mm limits the perspective too much.

Better and cheaper (then shown Nikon lenses) : Nikon Nikkor 135mm f/3.5 AI (Lighter and optical less complex then the f/2.8 version)
Much better Image Quality, but heavier the Zeiss APO Sonnar 135mm f/2.0 ZF.2 T* F-mount lens.

    What a title 😂
Anything we can do for girls 😉
Personally I started going wider. The portraits feel more personal with 50mm.
Even 35 in horizontal or square is great. It feels way more intimate.
I used to think 85 and up is for portraits, but the pics felt like postcards... nothing special

There is a 135 that will have to be pried from my cold dead fingers. The nikon 135 2.0 DC. I am not a fan of distorting faces at less than 3' but compression at 6-7' is what I love. The 135 dc is considered the bokeh king... it isn't "defocus control, dc" it is bokeh control. A 7 element lens that has 3D rendering like zeiss pop, auto focus on nikon for fast shooting and works on my f100, 5 and 6... thanks for costing me $1500 for those cameras... but you have to be kidding.. the f6 with infallible matrix metering, 5 fps film advance, auto focus. and will rewind with the leader out and no bigger than a dslr. The problem with them is when I had them on a table, on 2 occasions I took the wrong digital/film choice! the look so much alike. Do yourself a favor, give the 135 dc a try. I love the rendering of the mamiya in the 85/135 equiv in both 645 and 67 as well. In 85, the zeiss 85 1.4 planar... gorgeous.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom The hit on the 135 dc is CA. It is my head shot lens and from my preferred compression distance, 6-7' if subject turns head off lens axis, I can't reliably get both eyes sharp til f/3.2 and Ca is either completely gone or gone in a couple clicks in post. If I want to get a bit closer, zeiss 100 makro planar, so sharp will make your eyes bleed, with microcontrast/intertonal contrast that is spectacular for b&w. Even stopped down, it has 3D rendering, zeiss pop. It is my film scanning lens, a multi tasker. You work with models with impeccable skin. Don't want to use it on a 70 yr old woman with wrinkles... even with 7' octa she was shocked when she got a glance at the monitor.
