Monsters University explores disability, ableism and how sometimes you just aren't right for the job. Mike is at an immediate disadvantage on the Scare course compared to the monsters that have "good" genes that make them look fearsome naturally. He has to work harder than every other student on that course and even trains the rest of Oozma Kappa to harness what is unique about them to be scary for the Scare Games. And yet after all that, Mike just isn't scary. He knows all the theory, had worked his butt off but when it comes down to it, he can't scare kids. But he knows HOW to scare kids and that's why he becomes such a fantastic coach for Sully and they obviously end up getting jobs at Monsters Inc. and become the top scaring team! Sometimes you inherently don't have the ability to do something, but you can use what you know to help others and achieve things neither of you could do on your own. A lot of people didn't think much of Monsters University, but I like it a lot.
I like Monsters U alot too. I feel people are sooo nostalgic for the original that they'll trash anything that comes after it without actually giving it a shot.
This is exactly what makes MU so great. It’s one of the best Pixar sequels in my opinion. Also now with being in college and a fraternity I relate to it so much more now.
Not everyone can become a great artist but a great artist can come from anywhere. Ratatouille has a special place in my heart, even my mom that loathes animated movies loves this movie.
Monsters University literally taught kids: You can have dreams all you want, but that doesn't make then reachable. You'll probably fail, and you can't always get everything you want. That is a MASSIVELY important message to teach kids. Seriously give it a rewatch, dude. But great list overall Edit. Thanks for all the likes, guys :)
Not only that, It teaches that even with that "disabilities", you still can acomplish your dreams in a way. Mike still was able to work at his dream company, even though he wasn't scary
That's a fair point, but a good message in a mediocre movie isn't really impressive and it doesn't hit as hard as it could have. Besides, it threw all the uniqueness of the monster world from the first movie out the window for a generic college campus.
The message of Monsters University is that just because you love something doesn't mean you're good at it or can make a career out of it. Which, after the hundreds of kids' movies saying you can do anything if you want it enough, seems like a pretty important dose of reality.
Reading this now a month later I think this is kinda harsh; and clashes with what I believe the actual message is. Yes, not everyone can be good at the things they specifically love and want to do, but that doesn’t mean you have to give it up entirely. You can do other things related to it. Such as the case of how Mike found a place in scaring by helping Sully become the scariest monster around. In a way he’s still doing what he loved and dreamed as a kid, but in a different way. The message is that even if you’re not good at something, that doesn’t mean you have to give up on it.
i think its more about finding purpose in something you are passionate about but not really in the way you expected. cus like, mike DOES get a career in scaring at the end, just not in the way youd expect. weird comparison but kinda like how in Cars 3 Lighting Mcqueen after being retired still finds purpose in racing but not actually by racing but rather by coaching(? the other yellow car whose name i dont remember cus why would i :)
but Mike did make a career out of it, just not in the way he expected. That’s the actual message, you can still do what you love but it just may not be in the way that you think. For example, a person who loves music wanting to be a famous rockstar but they end up being a respected music producer instead.
i have a bit of a love/dislike relationship with Monsters University. As you said yes I love how it touched on that topic and it did do it well, but as a movie, I kind of thought it was just okay, or medicore. But I enjoy it for the most part.
I've always liked Monsters University, it's not as good as Monsters Inc but it is a good prequel. Remember seeing a video highlighting how it also deals with disability in a healthy way, through Mike not being scary in no way he can actually help. Just like in real life, he works the hardest out of anybody but just can't win. The movie has him unknowingly cheat and while it works, it doesn't benefit him in the long run and the message instead turns into thinking outside of the box, sort of. Mainly just him securing a job at the place he dreamed of working in, supporting scarers. And when you think about it, his greatest weakness ends up being his greatest advantage. He looks non threatening so he'll find it easier to make kids laugh.
FINALLY someone is giving the love that ratatouille deserves. This film is nothing more than a piece of art, a majestic piece of art. I’ve watched this movie many times since it’s release and I’m still to this day entertained every time I watch it. Ratatouille is phenomenal and I really think everyone should watch it.
@@joshfox567 I feel like it was written more for children, where as certain other films were written for a literally "general audience" of all ages. But I can agree with that sentiment, at 20 it's too "HERE'S THE MESSAGE" for me.
@@callmeobsequious yeah it did have a nice message for kids, and a very good important one too. But I like it when there is a deeper alternate meaning for adults to understand and think about
@@callmeobsequious inside out is still a great movie though! But for me- Coco and toy story are the best pixar movies of all time. And I also love watching cars still to this day!!🤪
Skele have you seen Toy Story 4? If not you NEED to watch it, same with the others. Just rewatch all of them. All of the Toy Story movies have a special meaning behind them.
I think it's unfair to rank the Good Dinosaur above Bug's Life for "groundbreaking visuals" when it came out seventeen years later. Of course it'll look better.
I love Monster’s University. The message that just because you don’t necessarily have the ability to follow your dreams doesn’t mean you can’t be successful. I think that’s an incredibly mature message to send to kids and I appreciate it for that. Also it’s just extremely well animated, the sets and backgrounds are incredibly detailed, funny, and very sincere. One of my faves
Having recently rewatched MU I completely agree. I thought the ending in particular was genius and the idea that sometimes even if you work really hard you still can't get want you want was a really ballsy message for a "kid's" movie. I've heard the complaint that it has no tension because you already know what happens to the characters thanks to Monster's Inc, but I don't think that's true at all. The entire plot was throroughly engaging and it's a movie just as much about the journey as the destination.
Hell yes. Ratatouille. I friggin love it. People have been sleeping on it and they need to wake up! For where you placed this on your list I can now forgive you for the other ranking slip-ups here, lol.
@@razkable I kinda have my issues with the way Karsten presents his opinions, but I mean I personally had Bugs Life at the very bottom just because I feel it doesn’t compare with the other films in the golden age era such as Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Nemo, etc. Also, I had the original Cars a little lower as well, but I actually really thoroughly enjoy that film. It’s just that other than nostalgia there’s not a TON there for me & a reason put it on at this age.
One thing I'm noticing is that WALL-E is consistently getting in a high placement in all the tier lists. I truly believe it's Pixar's greatest masterpiece.
There's no way you guys all really enjoy watching Wall-E that much. It is an interesting movie to think about with some cool visuals, but it's pretty damn boring even the first time, imo
Don Casey there’s not many likes on this comment and only 3 ppl replied so I think that many ppl out of however many millions that watched the film can all really enjoy Wall-E as their no.1 film
How is the good dinosaur, the most boring movie Pixar has ever done, the one that has recycled The Lion King and about five other movies, was ranked so HIGH
Monsters University basically talks about disability, Mike can't work in his dream job because of the way he was born There's one video that explains that
“Putting inside out number 12 is probably the hottest take on this list” *next rank puts literally the best toy story movie last out of all the toy story movies*
Ratatouille is a masterpiece. Together with Toy Story, Wall-E and The Incredibles, it's one of a few animated films that never feels like it was made for kids. It doesn't deserve to not be on the imdb top 250.
I don't think he was necessarily saying that Ralph 2 was a better movie than Incredibles 2, I think he meant that it felt like even Ralph 2 was trying to do something different and unique when compared to Incredibles 2, uk?
I'd argue toy story 2 is significant for diving into the existential dread of being a toy. As a story for Woody, I think it might be the strongest of the movies (maybe rivaled closely by toy story 4). For me personally, Jesse's flashback scene is the most powerful moment of the movies too.
@@ChrosTV lotso's backstory is basically Jesse's with an added scene. Toy Story 3 is uncannily similar to Toy Story 2, you may not realize it because it's got some powerful scene, but even those scene mirrors the one in TS2 (the incinerator scene is a more dramatic version of the airport luggage and departure scene). Tiy Story 3 is incredibly uninspired if you start thinking about it.
Only thing with Coco was I just found the kid kind of annoying apart from that I think it's perfect. I would've loved if they found a way to tell that story through Hector as a protagonist instead but it's still great. I think he ranked it pretty fairly
Coco is easily top 3 and by far the most underrated Pixar out there. It was advertised as a spooky Mexican Halloween style movie instead of the power of music and the human understanding of family and death.
WHY IS CARS AT 17? Dude please re-watch it man, I recently did and I realized how good it actually is. Some of the little hidden adult jokes are WONDERFUL. Its definitely better than we all remember
Honestly I really loved monsters university. I watched it during a time where I really felt like a fuck up in college and like i was stupid for not being able to figure out what i was doing. I think the lessons and the overall themes in monsters university really hit home with a lot of young adults in college or entering the workforce and thats why i rlly loved it.
Monsters University came out during the summer before I moved to my first year of secondary school. I felt really connected to Mike because for the first time it feels like it’s great to relate to a character who is going to the next stage of education and being excited for it even though he is not scary which reflects on to how I look forward to growing up and meeting new friends and creating new memories. I fail at every test but I don’t care because I love school so much. The movie is proper trash but I am glad back then, I was the appropriate target audience for a kids movie to watch this.
The main problem with Monsters University isn’t that it’s a bad movie. It’s clearly not and every Karsten says so. But not only is it going up against the rest of Pixar’s legacy but the plot and idea is just super average. Take away the monsters it’s just a typical college student proving himself movie
To be honest, Monsters University while being such a miedocre film, his messege and main moral od pretty good. It isn't "follow your Dreams, ewentually you will accomplish them" moral, but more like "Maybe you don't need college to achieve something", which is very accurate to me
Mikołaj500 also “your dreams aren’t always what they seem” (in a good way) mike thought he had everything planned out to be a scare we but then got kicked of school and got a new and better dream
You can tell a movie is great, when you can remember it part-by-part when only watching it once. Toy Story (the full series), Ratatouille, Incredibles, Cars, etc. you can remember almost the full-story off the top of your head without re-watching the movie. Boy, do I love Toy Story and Ratatouille.
rut_ 03 I’ve only seen spirited away and ponyo out of the ghibli films so what’s next? I know they aren’t all good but what’s the next best ghibli film after spirited away?
Peter Parker My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart, etc. Literally pick any of those, they’re all great.
Mono Kid ok thanks. I think I’ll pick my neighbor totoro or howls moving castle cause I’ve heard good things about those. I also watched akira yesterday and that’s a crazy film.
Funny enough, due to clever writing and animation, I think toy story two is the best toy story. It didn't make me emotional like the third one did, well except in that Jesse scene, but also that wasn't the goal- it achieved its goal excellently. My ranking Toy Story 2 Toy story 3 Toy story 4 Toy story Which is crazy because Toy story is SO good! But the animation has gotten pretty old and woody for the majority of the movie is kind of a butthead which just makes the other ones more likable- which is crazy town because toy story started it all!

cars just holds a special place in my heart. it's a humbling story about fame, legacy, respect and competitive integrity. I never got why people hated it so much.
I enjoy Cars (the first one) I just think compared to Pixar's other films it's not as groundbreaking. On its own though, it's great and very enjoyable!
I disagree that Monsters university didn’t have a message, I’m not defending the fact that it’s pretty boring and forgettable, however it conveys the message of disability and how you can still live your life and do things you enjoy even if you don’t possess qualities which are usually desired to do something. Instead of having mike become a scarer despite his disability of not being scary (which would be a false and glorified message to young kids) instead they subvert that and have him become a coach of scarers and still work under the bracket of what he desired. It’s quite clever and conveys a clear message to kids. However yes it can still be lacklustre and not entertaining.
Also it's a tale of not being afraid of failing, failures are part of life and you'll learn something from them, and they're not permanent. Which to an university student who was suicidal because he was failing HARD was the best message you could give.
KyrieFortune - exactly very well said, it’s a great message for young kids that if it’s not possible to get what u first wanted you can still persevere and do something incredible with your life!
It was also a pretty good lesson of how it's not just because you fail that you can't achieve your goals. Sully and Mike got out of the university in the end, but still managed to enter monsters inc out of their effort
I can understand where you're coming from for most of this list but you're telling me Toy Story 2 is your least favorite Toy Story movie?? You say that's because "it's the one movie in the franchise that doesn't feel like it's accomplishing a whole lot" but all I can say to that is maybe it's been a long time since you’ve watched it? The entire Toy Story franchise is essentially about abandonment and Toy Story 2 shows that the best imo. From Jesse & She Loved Me to Stinky Pete's motivation to Woody's arc even Buzz's motivation in rescuing Woody. Every main character in this movie contributes to that theme beautifully in a way that the sequels tried to replicate and build off of. Also the set pieces are my favorite and I think Buzz's character is handled by far the best in this movie even if he has the better arc in the first.
right? i was especially shocked that it was lower than toy story 4 on the list, which i felt was trying too hard to "say something." in the second one, it seemed so genuine in comparison
I personally find Toy Story 2 to be my least favorite as well. It just always seemed to be too big of a departure from the first movie in tone - as a stand alone movie it's fine, but something about the way it treats its pre-established characters just seems off to me, as if the characters are trying to play caricatures of themselves. Plus, it just gives off some creepy vibes at times, especially with Al.
Honest opinion here: Toy Story 4 is bad. I watched it in theaters and thought it was alright, but every time I think about it it just gets worse in my head. Like where was EVERY SINGLE SIDE CHARACTER? What happened to Buzz, why is he *so* stupid here? The villain is ok, no where near as good as Sid or Lotso or even Al tho. And my biggest gripe: (spoiler alert) Woody leaves the gang. Like... WHAT?! I get he loves Bo Peep but what happened to, “Whatever happens well stay together, for infinity and beyond.” You May call me an idiot here and that’s ok, scream it from the rooftops if you wish. But this movie is (imo) unnecessary to the franchise and just the worst one of the 4.
Nothing can beat the first movie, in my opinion. All of the other movies were extremely forgettable. Besides the ending to 3, I can't remember anything about them.
I remember seeing Up with my grandma on some random day. We both thought it would sort of suck, but we walked away being blown away. It’s not my favorite Pixar movie and I think it grows worse with each rewatch. But it is definitely one of my favorite memories I’ve had with my grandma.
Up isn’t my favorite either, but I found it very adorable. My only complaint is we don’t really get a lot of insight into Carl and Ellie’s marriage aside they couldn’t have children and were never able to afford a trip to their dream vacation. I’m just curious as to why the movie didn’t explore them considering adoption or at least having the joy of babysitting their nieces and nephews. Legit there can be a multitude of factors as to why couples can’t adopt, and that be an interesting topic to resolve and explore. I just felt the tone shift was a little awkward, going from a more retrospective style with the music to then being thrust into a more modern style and especially having Russel being an annoying kid who’s just trying to help (though for his badge) and helping Carl understand to enjoy the rest of his life instead of living in the past and unable to let go of Ellie.
I honestly prefer Wall-e because that film has one of the best graphics in the world and the story is so perfectly done. And also the comedy is pretty great lol. Still, ratatouille is a pretty close second
Even I think that ratatouille is underrated but I just wouldn’t put it at #1 I would probably put finding Nemo, the incredibles, toy story 3, cars (I have a soft spot for cars), and monsters inc ahead of it

Yes, not everyone can be good at the things they specifically love and want to do, but that doesn’t mean you have to give it up entirely. You can do other things related to it.
Didn't think I was an easily offendable person. Then, I saw your ranking of Toy Story 2.

Also it’s just extremely well animated, the sets and backgrounds are incredibly detailed, funny, and very sincere. One of my faves
MU is my favourite movie
Having recently rewatched MU I completely agree. I thought the ending in particular was genius and the idea that sometimes even if you work really hard you still can't get want you want was a really ballsy message for a "kid's" movie. I've heard the complaint that it has no tension because you already know what happens to the characters thanks to Monster's Inc, but I don't think that's true at all. The entire plot was throroughly engaging and it's a movie just as much about the journey as the destination.

Tiy Story 3 is incredibly uninspired if you start thinking about it.

Hi spencer 👋👋 noice tu see you hrre
Me personally I'd switch Ratatouille and Monsters inc. but thats just a personal preference.
Monsters University is one of my favorite movies Karsten really didnt give it credit
The main problem with Monsters University isn’t that it’s a bad movie. It’s clearly not and every Karsten says so. But not only is it going up against the rest of Pixar’s legacy but the plot and idea is just super average. Take away the monsters it’s just a typical college student proving himself movie

Ratatouille as number 1? We have officially became friends and you have earned a subscribe
Wish it could've been told better, but yeah, that's what I came away from his movie.

However yes it can still be lacklustre and not entertaining.
did you fucking see the end, I loved the ending scene, that's why I like MU
Also it's a tale of not being afraid of failing, failures are part of life and you'll learn something from them, and they're not permanent. Which to an university student who was suicidal because he was failing HARD was the best message you could give.
pk zoomer - yes it’s so well done, the ending brings the film up levels
Toy story 2 is way better than toy story 4
Nothing can beat the first movie, in my opinion. All of the other movies were extremely forgettable. Besides the ending to 3, I can't remember anything about them.
I remember seeing Up with my grandma on some random day. We both thought it would sort of suck, but we walked away being blown away. It’s not my favorite Pixar movie and I think it grows worse with each rewatch. But it is definitely one of my favorite memories I’ve had with my grandma.
Why does it grow worse with each rewatch to you?

It’s weird how many films have people turning into bears and getting better family relations cause of it.

The scene where Ego eats Remy's Ratatouille is seriously one of the most memorable scenes in animated history to me. I'll never forget how amazing that movie is.
YESSSSS RATATOUILLE IS GOD TIER I THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY
I still can’t believe Brave won Best Animated Feature over Wreck It Ralph!
Mega MovieZ lol. What about Crash winning best picture? or Shakespeare in live winning over Saving Private Ryan, or Forest Gump winning over Pulp Fiction? The academy can be kinda wack sometimes...
@@blakebackes Forrest Hump deserved it, sincerely. If you want to talk about the academy being weird, let's talk about the shape of water winning, or black panther getting a best pic nomination. Sincerely, this makes no sense. At all.
@@adami6187 shape of water deserved it

@@anthonymartensen3164 Against 3 Bilboards? No way. Shape of Water is beautifully done, but one of the worst scripts ive ever seen

Wall-E is my personal favorite Disney Pixar film. It’s so cute!
It’s a beautiful film
Me too. Me too.
its literally my favourite animated film of all time
I’ve honestly always thought that wall-e was a little overrated
@@owenbearman8995 I get that. I just love how much emotion it shows with such few words. It’s cute, it’s romantic, it’s emotional, it’s funny. It’s the perfect movie from my point of view. However I understand that it’s not a movie for everyone
"At the end of Toy Story 3 Andy's arc was done, not Woody's"

So stoked that someone finally agrees. Ratatouille is the best
I know right!?
By far the best. I have such a deep and unexplainable love for that movie.

Still do even after 10 years

I do that with Light in the 3rd movie

Ratatouille has a genius story/characters and literally perfect dialogue but I’ve always thought it was a bit boring since it’s basically just someone living a normal life which just isn’t really my thing
I've always said Ratatoullie is one of the most underrated movies ever and definitely in Pixar's top 3, and finally someone is giving it the love it deserves
fr, it’s sooo good. not to mention it’s straight up eye-candy with how they portray the streets and city of Paris

The Cars movies are much more popular among people who grew up with them.
The Coaster Roaster cars 1 is by far my favorite movie ever I watched it more than once a month as a child
The Coaster Roaster same, I was born at the time when the first movie came out so I have many memories of watching the first one at like eye doctors and at home. And for some reason my favorite one is Cars 2. I don’t get how people it, even though I’m in High school now (well not anymore) I still enjoy watching it multiple times. And Cars 3 was just a magnificent closer to the movies. Still don’t get how people don’t like them very much.
