- In this video I’ll be shooting Uberti’s copy of the Leech & Rigdon revolver made for the Confederate Army.
This is a .36 caliber cap & ball revolver that was made by one of the Confederacy’s most successful gun makers. I’ll give you the history of this fine gun, and we’ll do some shooting.

The Supremacy Clause (Art.6 Clause 2) says the Constitution and pursuant federal laws and treaties are the Supreme Law of the Law.
Art.1, Sec.10 lists three Clause restricting the States and secession is not listed as a restriction.
Amendments 9 and 10 say that the all powers not listed or restricted in the Constitution are retained by the States and/or the people.
In 1869, the Reconstruction SCOTUS needed to rule against the Confederate State of Texas in Texas v White. To get the ruling they wanted, secession had to be illegal. So, they made secession illegal by unconstitutional means.
They took PERPETUAL UNION from the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, took TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION, from the Constitution's Preamble, and added INDISSOLUBLE from Washington's Farewell Address and ruled PERPETUAL UNION + TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION + INDISSOLUBLE = Secession is illegal!
Here's what they said:
"The Union of the States never was a purely artificial and arbitrary relation. It began among the Colonies, and grew out of common origin, mutual sympathies, kindred principles, similar interests, and geographical relations. It was confirmed and strengthened by the necessities of war, and received definite form and character and sanction from the ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION. By these, the Union was solemnly declared to "be PERPETUAL". And when these Articles were found to be inadequate to the exigencies of the country, the Constitution was ordained "TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION". It is difficult to convey the idea of INDISSOLUBLE unity more clearly than by these words. What can be INDISSOLUBLE if a PERPETUAL UNION, made more perfect, is not?"
Not only did SCOTUS make their own ruling out of thin air, they violated the Constitution to do it. Art.1 Sec 9 lists restrictions on the federal government. One restriction is making EX POST FACTO laws.
Ex post facto is creating a law AFTER THE FACT (or ex post facto in Latin). The government can't make secession illegal AFTER THE FACT they already seceded AND they can't be punished for it!

As someone who's ancestors include a Texas Confederate cavalry veteran, I find Confederate firearms, especially revolvers, very interesting. I often wonder what my ancestor carried in the 28th Texas Confederate Cavalry, I'd like to think it was a Dance Brothers, but that's because it's my favorite Confederate revolver and I'm a native Texan.
My ancestor carried a 1851 navy in the 19th Virginian Calvalry.
It seems like almost every Confederate handgun manufacturer got to 1,500 pieces completed. Or thereabouts...! This particular revolver is beautiful! Great video Mr Bellevue

Speaking of Confederate revolvers I own an original Griswold and Gunnison and I shot it recently for the first time. I was amazed on how much more powerful it felt. Over one of my original colt 51 Navy's. it was hitting the target much harder. Same load same Colts 36 conical as well as Richmond labs 36 from eras gone. I cant explain it.🤷
What is the weight difference from a replica? I know the original frame is a bronze alloy, while replicas are brass. I also know the cylinders were twisted iron, so I'm not brave enough to shoot one even if given the chance
@@JKJ1900 i have a video on my channel comparing a replica to my original. And when i got mine i did a lot of talking to the owners club. And its believe there are maybe 4 or less that are in shootable shape. The frames would do what today they call stretching. Plus the Confederacy beat the living crap out of their guns. Mine was not In shootable condition. But i brought it back to shootable condition. Just for the chance to shoot it. And yes it's Twisted iron. There were lots of testing and even had the cylinder xrayed. At the moment it's believed mine is the only one that has been shot in well over 100 years. But thats speculation.
@@snappers_antique_firearms Yeah stretching kills the brass upper frames, from factory they were good for a few thousand rounds and that was more than good enough for the purpose.
It kicks harder because it isn't made out of the denser alloys available today, but sad to say you would have to legitimately measure FPS vs replica to be believed on it hitting harder though (not trying to bash you, just saying it for what it is).
There's a few more shootable G&G's around the world, but general consensus is that hardly any of them are in shooting condition.

@@ToreDL87 yeah when i got mine it was not in shootable condition. I have videos on my channel about getting it back it shootable. O i agree i need to get a chronograph. I was not comparing to a replica 51 navy. I have 3 originals colt navys and thats what i was comparing to its power. It wasn't just the kick that shocked me it was the I could shoot a Target 3 or 4 times with a 51 navy and then if I shoot that Target with the Griswold and Gunnison it would fall over. Or hit with much more violence to the Target. But being same loads that dos not make since. I will be picking up a chronograph soon. And for the recoil I believe that it could be the grip angle is different than the 51 Navy it's more leaned back on the Griswold and Gunnison.
That weapon was spitting fire in every direction!!
I would like to see a video that investigates the purchasing arrangements between the various importers (Midway USA, Cabelas, Cimerron, Taylors, Dixie Gun Works, etc.). Are they all getting the same stuff, or are certain importers buying/specifying special treatment with the guns they buy? There seems to be a wide variation in price. I suspect that certain vendors are buying higher grades of quality. If so, it would justify the price at some of the higher-demanding importers.
Thanks for all you do, Mike. You are one of the few to really cover Black Powder in all aspects. I have loaded BP cap'n ball and cartridges a little over the years. My latest project is making 38 S&W BP cartridges for my S&W top-break and Remington single action. I have long fingers, and I hate is getting my knuckles whacked by the trigger guard in recoil. Recently test firing my BP reloads vs a Remington factory 38 S&W (with smokeless powder), I realized that the BP cartridges do not whack my knuckles like the smokeless ones do. Seems the recoil impulse is a lot more spread out for the BP loads. Also, a nice boom rather than a crack! Looks like I'll be reloading more Black Powder now, in spite of more cleaning needed.

You live in a nice country, in US. In my country before February 2022 I cant have any handguns, only shotguns. If I want to shoot I must go to range and pay about 50$ for 50 cartridges 9 mil. =) Onlu blackpowders we can bye

Mike, if you could find one I would love to see a Gatling gun shooting black powder 45/70's. I bet it would be popular. Thank you for all the videos, I enjoy them.
I have shot Gatling guns a few times, but we were shooting smokeless
@@duelist1954 A black powder Gatling gun would have an amazing smoke cloud. I have seen Gatling guns fired on utube but always with smokeless which is not how it was used. Trying one with BP would teach something about how the weapon must have been used in the Civil War and about the extent of it's limitations. Also it would be FUN to try and FUN to watch. Even if only 25 or 50 or 100 rounds were fired.

Bydand Forever has two Gatling guns they fire with black powder during there re-enactments. Their website does not show any upcoming dates. I did see they have left San Diego for Scottsdale.
I recall talking with their chief gunnery officer some year’s ago. 300 rounds and clean.
@@gotsloco1810 My experience with good powder and correct grease is black powder can shoot cleaner than one would expect.
I just purchased a kit to make my own number 10 caps …

That's a nice peice. I might order one myself if I can. It has the looks of a 51 and a 61 and honnestly I don't care much for the engraving on all the revolver cylinders
I was very fortunate. In 2017 I stumbled upon a big firearms dealer that was getting out of reloading and black powder. They had sales offering up to 50% off. I bought over 20,000 caps of different sizes. I also bought several thousand Hornady 150 gr FMJ 30 caliber bullets and about the same amount of 230 gr 45 caliber bullets. Someone had beat me to the primers but I was able to get a sleeve of 5,000 small pistol. As they say it’s better to be lucky than good.
I was looking to buy a uberti 1851 Navy but none are in stock with no back order options so I bought an 1861. They had a Leach and Rigdon at Dixie in stock maybe I need that. Saturday night in Abbeville Alabama I'm binge watching your channel on UA-cam on my big TV with my three pomeranians.

In a former life you must have been a teacher. You are so good at it, you really hold my attention.
"When the cap goes off but doesn't ignite the charge, give it a minute"...I had a good reminder of that just yesterday: I was testing a small sample from a freshly milled batch of blackpowder, it ignited fast, and appeared to consume all of the powder but when I reviewed the high-speed footage I noticed that, a full 2.5 seconds after the charge had been consumed, there was another flash from a small bit of powder about 6" away from where the test sample had been. There were no embers to be seen anywhere but there was something, so be aware and wait.

Mike, the video you did on polishing up the internals on the Leech & Rigdon, the step by step guide, If you put that in Book Form, (with lots of picks and diagrams) I would be first in line, probably buy several copies.
I grew up about three city blocks from where the leech and rigdon factory was in greensboro! Played all aound in the woods there! The factory bldg was origially called the greensboro steam factory! No photos exist of factory!
I wish Uberti would produce other confederate revolvers. I believe the Leech & Rigdon is their only one.

I have a Pietta Leech & Rigdon .44 caliber.
I know it’s the wrong caliber but it has a 5 inch half round barrel.
I have never seen another one like it!

You can't be accused of counterfeiting an antique example using one of these modern clones simply because of the screws. Modern replicas use modern, standardized thread pitches on the screws.

Its interesting a friend of mine bought one of these Uberti leech and rigdens fairly recent and it still had the 51 Navy cylinder scene and I took it off for him and reblue the cylinder. Maybe because yours came from Cimarron. And they spec there finishes
I'm not sure how his came that way, unless they've changed their production for Cimarron. I bought one from there a couple years ago and it has the Ormsby scene engraved on it.
I’ve got snow on my farm up around 11,500ft in the Rockies and sunshine in town at sea level. Pacific NW has been nothing but rain up until last week. 🤮
A guy I subscribe to (he hasn't made videos in years) put together his "fantasy" Leech & Rigdon, he used a Pietta .44 Navy frame and cylinder then bought the round barrel .44 Navy from EMF and put them together. Pretty much the same barrel you used to make a .44 Griswold & Gunnison.
I literally was looking this up last night. Good to know about it. There's been a major shortage of bp firearms though.

That is an incredibly cool revolver you have there sir. I really enjoyed the video. I was wondering when you would get around to the Leech Rigdon. I have one myself… funny story I was looking for a 36 caliber navy, per your recommendation, because my dragoon, though I cherish it, consumes a ridiculous amount of powder. Online was out of stock, nothing at my local cabelas or typical LGS. I shopped around a little and went to an antique gun store the next town over that Carrie’s percussion guns. All they had were .44 caliber navies, a dragoon, and a leech and rigdon! So that’s what I ended up with… still want a navy or two… but I wouldn’t trade the leech rigdon

Good video Mike, and I look forward to the upcoming confederate series. Also I noticed you were using some RWS caps, not to knock US caps but I find them a more consistent product and buy them whenever available.
I like them too. I managed to pick up a couple of thousand of them last year.
I have a revolver that has nearly all the attributes of a Leech and Rigdon. It however has no markings on the top of the barrell. Since you talked more about the original not the replica. I want to know what the markings are like on this replica.
As for your book I have a book about Confederate revolvers by Edward Nicola Simmons. It was written in the sixties. He was a great friend and very knowledgeable on Confederate weapons as well as a nice collection. Thanks for a good video!

Hi Mike. Another excellent video of yours. If you can, make one on the copy of the Remington New Model Army made in Spain by Santa Barbara. I also hope you'll do some more with your '54 Hawken, but at 100 or 200 yards. A week ago I organized a contest in Oviedo (Asturias, Spain), where all my friends and I shot with our Hawken at 100 meters, standing up and with open sights.
