Bet you any money you stay with the Dark Side Chris, I know from all the info. You and others have said I'm gonna go Dark Side in the spring. And thanks again for all the good work you do with your videos.
I dark sided my 97 Yamaha Royal Star last summer. I put 3000 miles on it before the season ended, and I love it. I've ridden in the rain, curves, dirt roads and freeways. Works great and I don't think that I will go back .
I've got about 10k miles on my 2012 GW with a yokohoma ct. Love it. Won't be going back to a MT. I used to ride with a guy (since passed away) who had ridden over 2 million miles on motorcycles (documented by the AMA) and he had a Doctorate in Physics and his GW had a CT on the back. Before he mounted his CT he did an analysis and determined for him the CT was good to go on his bike. Good vids on the darkside process you went through Chris.
I’ve been riding on the Kumho Ecsta SPT (KU31) Run Flat 195/55/16 tire since 2013, and 25,000 miles, and NOW my ‘07 GW Airbag model is ready for a new one! (Yup, it’s lasted this long!) I can’t find the specified Kumho tire any longer, so I’ve ordered the Bridgestone Driveguard 195/55RF16 tire from Walmart for $133.31 with FREE Shipping to Hawaii! Hallelujah, I’m excited! I’m also gonna swap the tires, by myself, after ordering the Tire Irons, Valve Stem Tool, Rim Protectors, Stick-On 1/2 oz. Weights and Tire Balancer from Amazon! My Front tire is same age and mileage as the Kumho, but the front Bridgestone (G709) is STILL treaded pretty good!
Hello 👋 👋 I'm new to your channel...I recently bought a 1989 GOLDWING 1500 GL...In the past I owned a HYBUSIA...I sold it cause my wife couldn't ride cause she was uncomfortable...fast forward...I'm 58 yrs old and I got the GOLDWING so we both can enjoy riding together...Theirs a lot to learn about a GOLDWING...but you and 2 others GOLDWING channels I follow have got me ready to DARKSIDE...I will update you when I put the CAR TIRE on and ride... My name is Jeffery Dunbar...I live in Greenville, SC...
I have watched most of your youtube videos, enjoy them, and find them informative. I went darkside about 3500 miles and one month ago, on my 2008 GL1800. I doubt you or I will ever go back to a motorcycle tire! Thanks for your excellent youtube videos, and all the info and inspiration you are putting out there.

I went double darkside on my 2012 GW a couple years ago. It was ok. Then I put on the Traxxion Dynamics full Monty suspension upgrade and decided I wanted to get the full benefits of all the money I had spent. So I went back to OEM Bridgestone motorcycle tires. I don't regret trying out the Darkside, but I really appreciate the precision of the Traxxion setup and I don't think I could get the full benefits with car tires. You have to push the bars a little harder to lean into a corner, but once over, car tires hold the line ok. There is just a loss of the precision of motorcycle tires. Benefits of car tires: better tire life, better handling on gravel, better on grooved pavement. But I really enjoy getting down in the corners, so I think I will be staying with motorcycle tires.
Hello Chris, Robert here from Ohio, I’m new to the Honda Gold Wing, just bought my first one and I already put 2000 miles on it and I love it, took the wife to Hocking Hills and rode to Pittsburgh, I been watching your videos and I hope to catch up with you on a trip one time, I also enjoy them.
The cost is a very compelling argument. Many Iron Butt Rally riders dark side. I have been considering going to the dark side for some time, but the difference in tire bead has me scared. I'll be watching because you don't hold back. Keep up the good work!
I've been Darksiding on my 2014 Moto Guzzi California 1400 Touring for 70,000 miles and I'll never go back to a motorcycle tire. I've got some serious wear on my floorboards from hard twisty travel with NO issues.
You did good Chris! It's not about the cost if bike tires vs car tires, it's more about longevity of the car tire as a motorcycle traveler.i ride a lot of distance, the last thing I want is to replace a tire while on a trip. Next, check out the Bridgestone. Alright Chris, as I write this watching your newest video, I see my photos as you read my letter. Thanks man!!
Just finished changing my back tire with a car tire tonight. Had a Dunlop E4 on but picked up a nail. Your video’s convinced me to give it a try. Only rode a few miles tonight, couldn’t tell much difference in that short distance. We’ll see Randy
This conversation came up on my V Star 1300 Adventures forum earlier today. After listening to how you approached the idea, kept an open mind, and evaluated the value of dark siding, your channel, and videos on the topic were the first pearl of wisdom I reached for when asked. Thanks for being so detailed on this topic. You have been very helpful in my own riding, teaching me how to put Sedici hot wire cold weather gear together, as well as dark siding. Keep up the good work.
It's certainly not new putting car tires on; when I was riding my 78 GoldWing, that was the talk, putting car tires as replacement for bike tires! I personally never got to do so, but if I had to replace the tires I'd definitely consider it! Great video as usual! Stay safe, and God bless, 👍
Hey Chris, just want to let you know how much I enjoy your show, I’m probably your biggest and only fan here in Alaska. Keep up the good work brother I love it.
Glad they work for you Chris. But for me, I like the precision of the bike tires and even though I go through tires too much I'm sticking to what the manufacturer tells me to do. And if you think car tires won't pick up metal objects, keep driving!! But this is just my opinion and thank you for letting me put it out there, greetings from Riverside California, this is Alan.
Thanks for the honest unbiased information. Do you brother.. Everything makes since especially for your situation. I also believe that the car tire is under less stress on the motorcycle than if it was on a car. See you on the 28th!
Hey Chris, looks like a good choice on the car tire. The tire looks to have more contact with the road than a regular bike tire. Should be very good in the rain.
I have always been told a car tire on a bike is not only sacrilegious, its dangerous! Like you I am a high mileage rider and always error on the side of safety. Spending big dollars on a set of motorcycle tires that I blow through in a season. I will be watching your post on this. Best wishes; ride safe!
Chris I believe in the Darkside idea. I own a Goldwing 1800 1993, but it is a reverse trike. I need in replace my rear tire. My frt tires are car tires and I wish to replace it with the Dark Side. I can't find any one in the Sarasota Fl area to do the job. Legal problems are what I hear! looking for a job well done in my county
I have been dark siding on my Valkyrie Interstate for 10 years and 150,000 miles. I pull Mini Mate camper fully loaded weights about 300 pounds. Better braking and traction in the rain. I also find my font MC tire wears better with car tire on the rear. If your going dark side make sure you have a new front MC installed before you judge. I also own a new 2017 Goldwing with a MC tires. The MC tires are more responsive . Hey Chris...your going to see who is really FALSE FREIND now that you riding the dark side at Wing Ding.
Hey Chris one caution I can tell you is be carful with road edges or where you have to merge from one height of road surface to another at slow speeds it will try to lean you over pretty aggressively.
You can actually see the trailer moving back and forth on that grooved pavement.. Those E4 tires are supposed to last a long time according to Dunlop but it does not look like that at 6 or 7 K miles. Different car tires feel different also, so if you don't like this one there are other tires you can try...
I love the dark side option. I run a Kohoma Run flat tire on one rim and have Dunlop E4 on another rim. If I'm going to make a run with my trailer or a long trip on interstate I put the Kohoma on. If I'm going to hit the twisties and back roads I put the Dunlop on. It's so easy the change the back tire and rims are readily available from guys that do trike conversions. I paid $50 for the extra rim.
I’ve got double dark lined up for the next set in my Amazon cart. If I eat through my new Avon’s with the centramatics on that’s going to be it for me and MC tires.
Caliente!!!!!! DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!!! Never thought that I would see da day that you go darkside. I love the footage of seeing the car tire illustration. Chances are I will follow suit Bro. You are the Guru & Godfather out on the Goldwing, out on the Goldwing. At first I would’ve NEVER considered darksiding, but if it passes your test (mindful you are usually always right about the Goldwing) then it will definitely pass mine. Love this vid.
Hey Chris, I ran a car tire on my Stratoliner in the past. Just ordered a TOYO 185/60R16 86H EXASII TL for my 2010 Wing. This size is much closer to the size of the original tire. Just a little wider and a little taller. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for your videos!
Chris......I love all your videos and love for the Goldwing brother. I'm going dark side and they don't make that Bridgestone anymore. What would you run now that it's not available anymore
Hey Chris I feel you on the darkside and I'm going to try it out and see if I like it. I'm waiting on my tires to get to my house now. so hopefully in a couple of days I will be on the darkside. Talking to you at wing ding convinced me to go ahead and try it. I will let you know how I feel about it soon. enjoyed meeting you at wing ding and hope to see again soon.
Great to see you at least give it a try. Too many people poo poo it without even trying it. If you decide to go back then at least you can speak with some authority on the subject. I will be interested to hear how it does long term. At least with your reviews you are fairly well unbiased and you give the facts as you see them. Good luck.
Hello Chris!!! I often think the best reason to run a car tire would be the low weight rating of the motorcycle tire. I believe the Bridgestone G704 has a load rating of 827 lbs. I am afraid I would be overloaded riding 2-up with my trailer. My question about the car tire is how do you think the sidewalls will hold up long term in a very twisty environment? Here in the Big Bend region of Texas we have very twisty roads. I would be constantly leaning the tire onto the edges of the sidewall while cornering. I know the car tire is not designed for that. For this reason I have avoided the car tire, but I like the idea for the increased load rating. Anyway, good luck to you whichever way you choose to roll tire wise man! Be blessed brother!!!
I'm going Dark side on the 1500 wing been riding with Shinko radials on it for the last 2 years but I tow a trailer that I weighed at one time at 600Lbs I went to WingDing in TN last year and had a problem with valve stem problem that cost me a tire cause it wore down fast cost me 4 days of travel. A HD dealer in Junction city said they had a tire but turned out to be bias so I had to get on line order one off Walmart of all places cost me 165 with priority shipping had it next day... Was planning on going back east to Wingding this year but went to get bike ready and looked at rear tire and went WTF it was bald had to be burned off from the 102 degree day I rode 270 miles guess the Shinko Journey radial is not designed well for the heat. So dark side on the 1500 wing found tire with a 60 high profile at Walmart 175/60/16 for 45.99 should of had it Friday the 08-30 they lost the tire during shipment so they sent me another and discounted it by 5% I got the tire for 39 Got tire on the 6th my Honda dealer in stalled but he said the could not balance it so I had to balance it my self old school easy peasy done. So time to finish bike I'll let you know how it goes.
Chris, you present a compelling argument supporting your decision. I would still like to see what happens when you get leaned over enough to scrape the foot pegs. Will the square profile of a car tire force you over even more once you're onto the sidewall? It would be nice to see your camera shot of the rear tire in that situation. And I hope I'm wrong for your sake. I have heard that most Honda dealers will not touch your bike if it has a car tire mounted. Is this rumor or fact, I don't know. I would guess that less than 0.1% of your total riding is on grooved pavement so I'm not convinced that's a valid reason for switching to a car tire. Cost versus a motorcycle tire perhaps but not if it sacrifices safety. I wish you many safe miles and trouble-free riding.
I am a twisty, turny guy on a 07 Wing. I wore out a Michelin Primacy Alpin and now I'm 2/3rds of the way through a Pirelli snow control 3. If you check UA-cam there are lots of videos of guys on wings with sparks flying they are over so far. Been there, done that. The wing is locked on rails in the twisties with both my car tires. In fact the Pirelli is even better. Rain. It's incredible. Total confidence. Load capacity. Far greater than a MC tire. It's a run flat. If you've ever had a blow out at speed you'll love the confidence of a run flat. I can afford anything I want. I got 45,000 kms out of the Michelin. The Pirelli is softer so it will be toast at 30,000. The most precious things in my life are my grandchildren. They ride on the back. I would never put them in danger for a few dollars. My two pesos.
Fist of all More riders have been killed or injured when their MC tire slid out on a curve, living close to 4 Corners a big motorcycle hang out. Skyline & 84 is LITTERED with Sport Bike parts from wrecks ! NOW as far as I know not one rider on a CT tire has had that happen ! As for the Stealership working on a bike with a CT I would never let those Bozos near my bike with a wrench !
Chris, just took my 2012 to Banff National park in Canada with my Trailer from Phoenix. 4500 miles. My rear E4 blew out 60 miles north of Missoula, MT on the way back. It was completely worn out. only had about 8500 miles on it. I thought it would make the trip when I left. The Honda dealer in Missoula says pulling a trailer really cuts down the mileage you get from the rear. Front still has a lot of wear left. Just saw this video and I am thinking this is the way to go when the E4 I had to put on the rear wears out. I will be interested to see your further reviews, especially on the twisties, and whether any dealers would refuse to service your bike if it has a car tire. Jim from Phoenix
Had to subscribe, been watching your vids for a month bow, considering going goldwing since awhile now, but you and a couple of other tubers has helped me make my mind, allthou i dunnow if it will be a 1500 or 1800, 1800 kinda expensive atm but will see. Keep up the good work and keep educating riders, you doing a good job. 👍
Don't over look the final drive maintenance when going darkside . I pull the wheel on the Valkyrie and service the spines, pinion cup and drive shaft every 10000 miles. Likely not as much to service on the Goldwing.
I just purchased a 23 DCT Tour back in March of last year. Needed tires at 8000 miles both front and rear. Looking to go dark side. I have started watching your UA-cam videos . I like what I hear and what see from your videos. What would recommend for my bike front and rear? Thanks in advance. Rae Riggs from Bryson City NC.
Style is the answer to everything A fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous thing To do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without it To do a dangerous thing with style is what I call art Buying a Car Tire over a Motorcycle Tire Money is paid, but that's not the motive. It has to do with standing outside of it all, on your own.
I see a lot of people complaining about the lean angles with the car tire but if you're riding two up or with a trailer are you still riding as aggressively as you would riding solo?? the camera view from underneath it looked a lot like a motorcycle tire to me, just looked like there was more contact patch on ground and tire wasn't completely flat ( somewhat rounded edges ). Imo if you are a solo rider with no trailer and are aggressive then stick to cycle tire but two up or trailer car tire. Looking forward to review and maybe long term results. Keep up the great vids..
Great video Chris my take on this Situation you can't have an opinion on something you never tried, but everybody a expert on UA-cam 🤔🤣😂 BE BLESSED &RIDE SAFE🏍
Trying 195/55/16 on my gl1500 and like it so far. It's circumference is aprox, 78 '' mc tire is 80" it has changed rpm aprox, 200 at 65 mph. This will change fuel milage somewhat less, for pulling trailers it should be a plus as gearing is somewhat lower, wish I could get DS tire with same or more circumference 175/65/16 would be perfect but they don't make it. If some one knows of one let me know!
Welcome to the Darkside bro! Non-Darksiders seem to get offended whenever they see that CT. Not sure why that happens, but just a warning. Be prepared to love on them a little more than usual. Ride Safe, Ride Smart, but mostly Ride Blessed!
Up here in Canada when we see CT we immediately think of Canadian Tire and when we see the phrase "went to the Darkside" vast majority of bikers of up here will say to you "congrats on buying a new Harley, welcome to the darkside".
Chris, another great video! You always check stuff out and give very informative advice and always look st things with a great attitude! This question may have been asked but knowing you are a guy who covers all his bases I have to ask if you had checked with your insurance company about coverage in case of a crash. Would they try to not cover. Good luck and I look forward to seeing more on this topic.
My last bike tire had 12 k on it and was so chopped up and flat in the middle I wish I could have put a camera to watch it . My next one will be a be a car tire. Thanks for video I go though two sets a year and it gets expensive fast .
Chris would you be interested in videoing your front car tires on your car so we can see how the tires react to driving to compare to the rear tire on your GW? I know I’m being a pain in the ass LOL
Hey Chris, I'm still following you my Brother. Thumbs up on the vid! Love the vids Man. I also appreciate that you are keeping it clean for the most part in your vlogs. Hey Brother, I got a quick question or two. Are you still dark siding and if so, does the car tire hurt your gas mileage, help your gas mileage, or is it about the same? I'm thinking about dark siding too. Thank you my Brother. Stay safe and keep the rubber side down. It make an awful scraping noise when the shiny side go down ha ha! Peace my Brother
Chris I went back to this older video cuz I'm thinking about getting the Bridgestone drive guard for my goldwing. Are you still using Bridgestone and are you happy with it?
Hi Chris, jus found your UA-cam channel. Nice job brother! Just got new tires and now I’m thinking about dark siding NEXT ROUND. In the meantime, would you consider doing a video on HOW TO CREATE Goldwing VIDEOS? Or, if you have a video, please send the link. I use Wirecast to stream and I’ve got several cameras including GoPro but I’d love to see your Workflow if you have it.
Chris guys in my group has been Darkside for a while and he love it ,, now another guy went darkside 4 months ago , and he love’s it ,,, and the only reason I haven’t went in I got a deal on my rear tire , and the guy that went darkside gave me his tire so I have two tire to wear out lol
I dark side because it was recommended by "mtcVoyager" trike conversions when I bolted on their trike conversion kit. I am now riding my bike as my primary. I have put on 3,000 miles in just the first month.
sounds good to me. I will try it... after I got 5 yrs and limited miles out of a nice bike tire that the tread came unglued from the casing with limited miles on it???? I didn't like that tooo much, so time for new tire.
Hey Chris I'm ready to try that tire your speaking of, can you please tell me does it rub anywhere in the wheel well, anywhere?? Thank you for your response
Very informative. Thanks for the information. What recording gear and microphone set up are you using? Very clear, and no road/wind noise. I would like to duplicate it. Thanks again and keep those vids coming!
Question for dark side tire is tight turn maneuvering in wet conditions, with speed? Doesn't look like enough rounded roll over tread from road surface tread to sidewall? There might be better tire suited to motorcycles? You'll like driving with this car tire in straight lines! Who installed tire on bike? Tire dealer question mounting liabilities?
Chris can you elaborate on how it handles on curves, for example does it want to keep on going strait ahead and do you think traction is compromised due to the square edges, can one do the twists with confidence?, I would think one has to be more deliberate on curves cause of that, that's all the issues I foresee, and who doesn't want a tire to last 40 to 60K miles
Hey guy's , I pull a Kwikkamp trailer with my 06 wing. I assume the tire size is the same 195-55-16. What brand do you recommend . Thank you Chris for your informed videos! From Great Bend KS, P.s, tire pressure with trailer, vs solo
Chris you can pickup about anything in any tire the roads are not clean. If your leaning into curves and the car tier is leaving the the road on one side or the other, wouldn't it wear more on the sides and then you have to buy another car tire?
Hello, can you tell me what the feeling is that make the tire feel different on a curve? Is it harder to lean or just a different feel with no leaning issues
Hey Chris just found and subbed your channel. Your video is really good. Does anyone know what size tire you could use on an 02 electra glide. I'm ready to go dark. Tried of buying tires every 3 to 5k.
Bet you any money you stay with the Dark Side Chris, I know from all the info. You and others have said I'm gonna go Dark Side in the spring. And thanks again for all the good work you do with your videos.
We're fixing to try it on our 2004 Honda goldwing 1800 hopefully I like it
We'll have our first ride Friday 2/4/22 Chris caliente

Caliente!!!!!! DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!!! Never thought that I would see da day that you go darkside. I love the footage of seeing the car tire illustration. Chances are I will follow suit Bro. You are the Guru & Godfather out on the Goldwing, out on the Goldwing. At first I would’ve NEVER considered darksiding, but if it passes your test (mindful you are usually always right about the Goldwing) then it will definitely pass mine. Love this vid.
Chris I think it was a good idea to see how your Wing would ride with a car tire. Great review my brother!
D-Loe
Hey Chris, I ran a car tire on my Stratoliner in the past. Just ordered a TOYO 185/60R16 86H EXASII TL for my 2010 Wing. This size is much closer to the size of the original tire. Just a little wider and a little taller. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for your videos!
The Toyo had really soft side walls so I returned it.
The load rating on the car tire is around 1200 pounds.
Hi Chris the tyre looks good and seems to handle bad road conditions smoothly , love your video friend thanks from the UK, stay blessed.
I just went that way this weekend. Used a Yokohama run flat.
Going to give it a try Chris . Bet your stopping is much quicker on the dark side, more rubber on the road.
correct the bike stops quicker.
I have scraped my pegs many times not even trying.
Mine is not a run flat and is very comfortable. Don't know if they are less comfy.
Nice windshield. Thanks for saving any plexy glass for the rest of the world
Had to subscribe, been watching your vids for a month bow, considering going goldwing since awhile now, but you and a couple of other tubers has helped me make my mind, allthou i dunnow if it will be a 1500 or 1800, 1800 kinda expensive atm but will see.
Style is the answer to everything
A fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous thing
To do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without it
To do a dangerous thing with style is what I call art
Buying a Car Tire over a Motorcycle Tire
Money is paid, but that's not the motive.
It has to do with standing outside of it all, on your own.
Thanks Chris for all the info on the new car trie . Will be watching for your full review . Thanks again My Friend
Welcome to the darkside Chris! I darksided my FJR1300 a few years ago. The Goldwing might be next.
By the way that tire looks great & is making plenty of contact with the road.
Really enjoy your video's. You provide a informative service
Great video Chris my take on this
Situation you can't have an opinion on something you never tried, but everybody a expert on UA-cam 🤔🤣😂 BE BLESSED &RIDE SAFE🏍
I went dark side rear not shore how many lb to put in it.i Hurd you mention 44 lb. On tire it's less .what's your thoughts Chris
How do I choose the correct car tire size? My bike takes Rear 190/50 ZR17.
Welcome to the Darkside bro!
Non-Darksiders seem to get offended whenever they see that CT. Not sure why that happens, but just a warning. Be prepared to love on them a little more than usual. Ride Safe, Ride Smart, but mostly Ride Blessed!
People are afraid of what they don’t understand.
Valid point!
You know once you go darkside you never go back
My last bike tire had 12 k on it and was so chopped up and flat in the middle I wish I could have put a camera to watch it . My next one will be a be a car tire. Thanks for video I go though two sets a year and it gets expensive fast .
Welcome
To the “dark side”, you’ll love it....
When you watch videos from other riders that have darksided, the tire looks like it does well.
Great video Chris, Thanks for keeping it real.
Chris I would like to go with a Run-flat are they hard to Mount and shops don't mount them Liability as we Know!
Your right Chris the car tire will last a lot longer. But I don’t like that Squirrley Wigle on the groove payment
Hello oh great one, I am double parkside and what air pressure are you running in back?
I absolutely love it
Hey Chris I'm ready to try that tire your speaking of, can you please tell me does it rub anywhere in the wheel well, anywhere?? Thank you for your response
Hey Chris, Look forward to more videos on this. I just bought a Yokohama ENVigor for my 2012. Don't know if I'll get it mounted for this season.
I’m tired of buying tires, I have 66000 miles on my 08 goldwing. Just wore out my elite 4 only 9000 miles. What direction did you mount the car tire?
Very informative. Thanks for the information. What recording gear and microphone set up are you using? Very clear, and no road/wind noise. I would like to duplicate it. Thanks again and keep those vids coming!
Chris also what model of tire is that driveguard
2008 goldwing owner what is the air pressure you use on the car tire???
Also chris are spare rims expensive? and can you elaborate on how Centra Matic Wheel Balacer works... one only goes dark on rear tires right? Thank's
Hi Chris. How do you do to take the your motorcycle to, inspect it every year, You don’t have no trouble?
No brainer for long straight roads
Hey Chris just found and subbed your channel. Your video is really good. Does anyone know what size tire you could use on an 02 electra glide. I'm ready to go dark. Tried of buying tires every 3 to 5k.
It makes sense to darkside for mileage, mph might change a little
Thanh Tran is that more or less mpg?
Obviously, If you run a sidecar darksiding is the obvious choice with major advantages.
Dunlop will be sending you some new tires and they along with BS will be changing the depths or their thread and patterns because you went Darkside
How do you get your wheels so polished
I changed in 2007 and I'll never use a motorcycle tire on the rear again. Plus a lot more miles on the car tire. I use Michelin winter sports
Hey brother. Are you still running darkside? Just bought the same tire. Can't wait to mount it up
Hi Chris Would your insurance pay out if you have a accident with the car tyre fitted ?
