I really love the slight gray left behind, adds another dimension to the crackle.

Beautiful, these cracks can be filled with fluorescent epoxy resin, they would make a great effect at night 😀. What is your turning speed on the lathe?

Thank you. I have considered resin options, and may try it in the future, but not sure if I would like it with this carved design. I think it would look really cool, but it would fill all the spaces and smooth out flush with the surface. I was thinking if I used a glow powder in the cracks and just used a simple clear coat to seal it in, I could retain the tactile texture. Hmmm....more experiments to come I guess! LOL Oh, I'm turning at about 2000 RPM for most of the work, but slow it down some for sanding. And lowest speed when applying any dye so it doesn't sling it everywhere.

@@mythimpressions Thank you for your answer and of course good luck with your experiments. I'm just starting to learn how to properly turn on a lathe, and thanks to your videos I'm gaining a lot of theoretical experience, which I'm trying to put into practice. I have already made few wands for my daughter which we are both happy with, of course they are not perfect due to my lack of experience, but I have a lot of fun making them. Unfortunately, the fun ends when is time to sharpen the chisels to avoid these torn fibers 😅.. I have a lot of pine waste and I learn on it, but as soon as I learn how to sharpen chisels properly, I will try it on harder oak. Maybe one day I will be proud of my work and share the result. Best regards and I'm waiting for your next videos 😉

@@x0ax So glad they are helpful! Sharpening tools is something I've not really covered in my vids, but I honestly picked up a lot of tips watching other wood turning videos myself. Having a low speed grinder and a lathe tool sharpening system was key for me to keep the correct angles. And having stones to touch up the edges as needed too. Maybe I'll try a sharpening vid in the near future, or at least point to a few other vids I've seen to help folks out. Practice is the best teacher so keep at it and don't be afraid to mess up. Best of luck and thank you for your support! :D

    Beautiful!
Could you share the name/details of the chuck you’re using? I turn pens, wands, and other spindly things…and the clatter is driving me crazy. I started doing the shaft in your chuck technique, but I have to get mine down to 3/8”…and I think the chuck you use would be more friendly to use. Thanks!

I'm using a Nova chuck with the mini spigot jaws which I believe will tighten to about 8mm round. Chatter is the worst to deal with when turning long, thing things for sure. Having super sharp tools is a must, but with Maple, purple heart, jotoba, padouk, and other super dense woods; it's almost impossible to totally eliminate. The less unsupported wood, the better. A steady rest can help too if you have room to work around it. I talk a bit about it in a previous video: ua-cam.com/video/79if8UBUtNo/v-deo.htmlsi=GNlmXIXXjFEohlDM

@@mythimpressions Yes, I have a steady rest. It's great, but a pain to work around. I may invest in the spigot jaws for my nova chuck. Thanks for the recommendation!

I’ve just found your channel as I’ve literally just released my own video about trying out wand making for the first time, so now I’m back to researching how the professionals do it!
That effect turns out so well, your wands are inspiring me to go out now and make more!

Thank you so much! Best of luck to you. And don't limit yourself to just wand making vids. I've picked up countless tips watching other types of makers as well. You never know when you'll spot an idea or technique that can be adapted to use in you're own projects.

      @@mythimpressions Absolutely!
I think I’ve come from the other way around, watching loads of general hand carving, staff making but not much on wands specifically, so it’s been great to learn more about that specific craft!

Maple is my favorite wood to turn but always struggle to get it to look serious and foreboding. Love the use of texture and dyes to bring some interest to the maple

Yes, Maple is great to work with and handles some things perfectly, but the downside is it's resistance to some of the easy to do color alterations. It's really fun for me to find what techniques work best for adding design elements in each different type of wood. Seems like a great discussion for the Discord server once we get that better established. :D
