  • Woodland Caribou Provincial Park has to be one of the world’s premier canoe-tripping destinations. A few years ago, I (Keenan) had the pleasure of paddling through this park with my brother on an ice-off fly-in trip. It was one of the best canoe trips I've ever experienced.
    For the past few years my wife Ashley and I have been trying to plan a canoe trip to this unique destination but there always seemed to be something that got in our way, which was usually forest fires!
    Over 50% of Woodland Caribou burnt in 2021 and that is on top of all the multiple, previous fires that have taken place over the years.
    In the summer of 2022, we were finally able to make our dream a reality by visiting Woodland Caribou provincial park for the better part of two weeks.
    This was one of the best canoe trips Ashley and I have ever been on. We were fortunate to experience some truly special and unique moments, including viewing the northern lights and incredible sunsets, witnessing a huge bull moose, and seeing an endangered Woodland Caribou.
    This film was done in a slightly different style for us and we really hope you enjoy it. It was a lot of fun to put together. Revisiting the footage from this trip really makes us want to go back. Who knows what spring 2023 may hold!…If you enjoy our films, it would mean so much for you to subscribe, share, and like!
    Also wanted to give a big thank you to the Rogalinski family who own and operate Goldseekers Outfitters in Red Lake Ontario. They truly provided top notch service and were excellent to deal with. Nothing but good things to say. Thank you!

    This one hit me on a personal level as I was one of the if not the last person to paddle a big part of the park before the big burn. Great to see you went despite the burn! And the rewards are so worth it. That moose was absolutely insane! I like Ashley’s response ‘this must be the biggest moose in the world!’ Epic reward at the and with the Auroras! The park might be mostly burned, but hasn’t lost any of its magic! I’m going back this year myself. Thanks for this video! Very well done👌

      How different is it from Wabakimi Provincial Park?

    • @The-Dutch-Explorer
      @The-Dutch-Explorer Рік тому

      @@donthomas8724 I have only just Scratched the surface of Wabakimi’s wilderness, but I feel every park has its own very unique and distinct feel and look. My first impression of Wabakimi is that is greener and less effected by fires over the years. Wabakimi has a lot more rivers and whitewater then Woodland. The older burns in Woodland are also a part of the magic of the area as the scenery changes lots as you put in the kilometers. So I would say both are equally beautiful in their own way.

    This is epic filmmaking and I love the way you told this story. The narration you did in your home cutting to the trip footage was amazing to watch. I am not sure if there are contests for films like this but it is worthy of entering it. Thank you Keenan and Ashley for sharing this beautiful place. I was very moved with the forest that had burned, by your sighting of the huge bull moose, and caribou, and loons. And the northern lights. Humbling. Watching it I was thinking of the Water Walkers the late Josephine Mandamin, Autumn Peltier and so many others who walked the great lakes and made prayers for the waters. I really felt also to say prayers for those trees. I am going to get there at Woodland Caribou to do that. Hopefully this year. I feel touched by your sensitivity to nature. Thank you again. Susan

    I don't know how you do it, but you keep moving the bar forward! This was fantastic, I really enjoyed it! Typically, if my wife is in the room with me when I start a UA-cam video, she leaves to go do something else. She has little interest in most, commenting on so many of them are "full of outdoor cooking filler footage". No so with your videos! She quickly became enthralled, staying with me for the whole video; asking questions, making comments, etc., that's was a first! The quality of this "video" (really, a "film") was such that I could see it being shown on The Nature of Things, or at a Water Walker festival; it's that good. Much respect! 🙌🙌🙌

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  Рік тому +1

      That was nice of Albert to recommend the video. They are really awesome outfitters in case you haven't used them before. Top notch service from Goldseekers. Anyways sounds like you have a heck of a trip planned. As fas as the portages go, the majority of them are actually decent. Rough but most are so short that even if they are brutal it doesn't last that long if you know what I mean. I don't think you'll have to much trouble on the majority of the portages. We've seen some though that are complete disasters with fallen trees everywhere, making portaging a complete nightmare. The really nice thing about WCPP is that with it being so connected if one portage is too brutal to be worthwhile completing there is always another way around. Not sure how useful this info was but best of luck on your trip. Would love to hear your route as well.

      @@CanoeTheNorth Our route is a little unusual I think. We plan to start in Irregular lake. We will camp the for 2 night and wait for the rest of our group to arrive( they are only staying 8 days) and fish for musky in the meantime. Then we head north through haggart to bulging and will make our way through adventure to haven lake for walleye. From there I think the short trip guys will head out and our plan will be to roam! If we find a spot we love we will stay. I got nervous talking to a couple WCPP veterans, but I think he does portage clearing rather than just trying to get through. Your insight and video is a huge relief.

    Hey guys, it looks like it was an awesome trip. Thanks for sharing. I can't say I'm wild about the way this episode was formatted, but I get trying new things, and I'm still totally supportive of your channel. That's just intended as constructive feedback 😊. Also, I find a trip to these more remote parks to be quite intimidating. Would you say it's much more demanding than, say, a less traveled Temagami route?

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  Рік тому

      Hey Brendan. Thanks very much for the comment. Totally understand the video not being your style but we appreciate the feedback (and the polite way you put it). If I were to compare these two parks I would honestly say that Temagami is probably a tougher place to canoe than WCPP in all honesty. Temagami has some tough portages and a lot of elevation as well. WCPP is certainly more remote but offers short but tough portages with less elevation changes. If you can canoe trip through Temagami I really think you would have no issues in WCPP/ Wabakimi/ Quetico. That's my opinion anyways for what it's worth.

But my wife and I went to an island lodge on Douglas Lake in 2006 and canoed down Onnie creek to Onnie lake. That area is like a peninsula that the owner of the lodge had lobbied hard to be included in the park. Amazingly, we saw a Woodland caribou.... people who had been at the lodge for years had never seen one. In a short portage to hatch lake, we see a large black bear swimming across the lake... my wife just caught a glimpse as she was taking photos of leichen. After 18 years, we plan to go back this summer!
