14 Days of Wilderness Camping on the Greatest Lake on Earth

- My wife Thais and I embarked on a two-week canoe camping trip starting in Rossport, Ontario, Canada, to explore the ethereal Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area. Along the way, we came across signs of the Midcontinent Rift, the largest known failed rift in the world, where North America nearly tore itself apart, ultimately forming Lake Superior.

@@maximbudnick We all have lives. No need to be sorry. We are just glad you are still sharing your beautiful content with us.
So much to love about this video. As ever, you bring the peace of nature to us. I admire how you honor your wife, but the best part for me is how you observe and encourage your followers to do the same. Many thanks Max and Thais
Thank you for watching and for your kind words, Lana. Hope you have a wonderful week coming up!
Ok so this one was incredible.
Thais sighting - she has awesome energy.
Excellent wildlife.
Unbelievable views.
Extensive geology nerd-outs.
Loving tribute to your grandfather.
You bring a level of thoughtfulness and existential inquiry to your videos that is unmatched and very appreciated. This was a masterpiece.
Thank you for your kind and insightful words, we really appreciate it!
Thank you and your lovely wife for sharing this incredibly beautiful canoe trip with us.
At a time of loss of someone like your grandfather, what an honorable way to remember him.
Yes Faye, it felt so appropriate. Thanks for joiningus!
It is unimaginable that 80,000 years ago the 'giant' beavers in the southern Ontario region were as big as a modern small black bear!!!
Thank you for your continued sharing of exploration and knowledge in your adventures.
Thank you so very much for sharing this video with us. RIP dear Max Budnick. Condolences to your family.
I really enjoyed your beautiful video, thank you for taking us along! Thais is a star, great fun energy between you two! Sorry to hear about your granddad.
Well worth waiting for. I love that you and your wife both enjoy the adventures together. You do such a good job explaining everything it is like a history lesson and your attention to detail is so great. Todd Mullin.
My sincere condolences to you and your family.
I'm sure your grandfather was and still is wildly proud of you, Xander and the rest of his grandkids.
What you share with the world matters and is greatly appreciated.
Max, so wonderful to have another video! I thoroughly enjoy the thought filled way you experience nature and the things you teach us along the way. Watching you and Thais enjoy the adventuring on this trip was truly lovely. Thinking of you as you mourn your Grandfather ❤️
Thank you so much Kathy! I am truly glad you enjoyed :)
Hi Max what an absolutely stunningly beautiful video you out did yourself and no other you tuber can even come close to the beauty you captured. Loved the historical info very very much .. I’ll never look at rock the same. Being a birder I appreciate the lovely shots of the birds thank you. Having your Mrs along was very nice indeed. I’m your number one fan 😊
Thanks Patti! 🙂 Glad to have a little geology to your thinking. I love the birds as well, I am learning more all the time.
Ah Max thanks for taking us along on this journey and heartfelt sadness at the loss of your grandfather. Glad you got to see him one last time. He must have been one special human! Your footage as always brings me to the places I long to be away from the everyday hustle. Frolicking otters, the ever ethereal loons that I love so much and all the wildlife, Superior’s breathtaking magnificence…so special. And your Thais certainly can fish 😉💕 It’s good to see you back out where you belong👊🏻Thank you Max! B
P.S. As we lurch towards tomorrow’s election your work has been such a welcome interlude from all the madness here in the States…
Hey Barret, thanks a ton for your kind words! Glad to provide some reprieve from that chaos going on down there. Good luck!
Spectacular beauty! Awesome fish, Thais. Cheers!
Cheers Deb!
Beautiful. Thank you.....i was left speechless at the end by your love for your grandpa. Peace to you Max.
Thank you so much Ruby! Means a lot
A fitting tribute to your Grand Father. Thx for sharing.
Thank you 🙂
Sorry for your loss but it is we who owe you a debt of gratitude for making these amazing films. Keep up the good work!
Thanks David! That means a lot to me!
@@maximbudnick You bet!
Absolutely stunning. What a trip!
Thanks Ben! Do you have any new trips coming out soon? I still haven't watched your last one. Hope you are well man!
Thais was the real star of this video. She did not pansy around getting that fish into the boat. I was so excited by her being excited. The moment when she realized that it wasn’t a snag but a ‘fucking big ass fish’ was epic. So glad you didn’t edit that out. Thank you both for a wonderful hour long video.
Haha yeah she was bursting with joy for the rest of the trip. We couldn't stop thinking about how beautiful fat and tasty that fish was! RIP and thank you,Mr. Trout!!! Haha thanks for watching and for the kind comment
Thanks so much Maxim for sharing your trip into lake Superior with Thais. I appreciated the educational moments about this planet we share. As always, I really appreciate the reflective thoughts you share with us. I'm very pleased to be able to come along.
Thank you so much Jay! Really glad to hear you enjoyed the educational bits. I absolutely love geology.
Thank you for having us along on your latest journey starring Thais and Maxim. What a great way to celebrate your grandfather. Blessings
Thank you, Nicholas! Your comment on it being a great way to celebrate my father means a lot. Hope all has been well with you. Cheers and have a great rest of your Sunday
So sorry for the loss of your grandfather. Thanks for the great trip.
Thank you 🙂
Thank you for sharing your incredible place in the world and all it has to offer, beautiful scenery, bird life, otters and incredibly large trout.
Very nice tribute to your Grandpa. Great to see your usual top quality movie-making, tale-telling, and nature-nerding. Thais is an absolute treat as always. I'd like to do a trip on Superior but I'd always feel some apprehension every time I rounded a point, wondering if I would see Jon standing on a cliff, shaking his fist and yelling "Get off my lake!" ;)
Thanks! I had the same apprehension about Jon but decided to just decided to come equipped with bear spray.
Absolutely loved this one ! You two are adorable. We will miss you Grandpa ❤
Thank you
Sorry for your loss. It's always a pleasure to watch one of your amazing adventure and learn about the history you share. Thanks man!
Thanks, Kevin! My pleasure to share and I'm so glad you enjoyed watching :) Cheers!
Serenity and serendipity meet in this piece of glorious art. An inspiration in these trying times.
Thank you for your kind words Curtis!
Hooray! Happy to see you back.
Always enjoyed those moments where you and your brother reflect a lot in your videos. Makes those grounding, humbling moments to take a step back and pause. We are always looking ahead, moving so fast. Thanks for sharing your trip!

Awesome photography! I really enjoyed this one.
Thanks for watching, Eva! I appreciate the kind words :)
You had me crying at the end of the video. What a nice tribute to your Grandfather. I bet he was very proud of you. ❤
Another gorgeous video. My favourite part was the porcupine. She was so cute and zen.
Thank you! I absolutely love porcupines i find them incredibly charismatic.
Thank you for bringing us along with you.
Thank you for coming along!
Amazing trip.. & what a fish! Love the way she slapped it (lol) .. Also, I’m so sorry to hear about your grandpa 🙏🏼❤ Thank you for these beautiful videos.

Another beautifully filmed and edited story! Can’t wait to explore that area myself.
Thanks a lot man! I just subscribed to your new channel! Going to check out your superior trip!
@@maximbudnick Thanks Max! I can't believe it has taken me so long to start exploring Superior. Can't wait to do Pukaskwa next summer!
Thank you for bringing us along on this beautiful video. I am sorry for your loss, Max. You will carry him forward for the rest of your life.
What a trip! as someone who majored in Geography+civil engineering I really appreciated the explanation of the rocks and the place! keep up the good work
Hey thanks for saying that! Always wondering if I'm boring people... I appreciate you watching! Cheers

Photography is,as always, superb. Your vids always give more than expected. Thanks for the ride.
Thank you Sandra! Thanks for coming along 🙂
What a fantastic experience to join this tour. Many animals and birds are the same as I have here at home in Sweden. Thanks Maxim ❤️
Hi from Florida
Such a beautiful video you guys
Be safe an Bless you
🌈
Thanks Donna!
Love watching your videos ever since you started your own channel always enjoyed the times that you spent with your brother on his channel and when you finally started your old adventures, I look forward to watching your videos with both my daughters and my wife. It’s better than watching a movie on television. We open up our UA-cam app on our smart TV and we sit down as a family and watch you and your brother‘s adventures in the great Canadian North. We also love going on our mini adventures but it is difficult. We do have a four year-old so it is hard to go on long adventures but my oldest daughter who is 9 1/2 loves going on canoe trips with me thank you Max for all your hard work!!!!
My pleasure Steve, really nice to hear that! A canoe trip with a 4 year old would be difficult but you have so much to look forward to
Once again, a quality A+ video. Thank you so much.
Love everything about this video. Thank you so much!
You are so welcome!
Another great video. Im in a wheelchair and live vicariously through you, Xander, and Jon and Erin. I find myself crying sometimes because the beauty of the North is so stunning. Thank you all for that.
Im also very sorry about the loss of yours and Xanders grandfather. I know that sorrow very well. One day at a time. It gets better. Baby steps. Thanks again for the videos. God bless. ❤
Thank you so much for sharing your feelings and a bit about yourself. It honestly motivates me so much to hear from you and bring people along to places like this.
Stunning job Max, truly gorgeous camerawork. That 24mm may have its limitations but the image quality of a prime is worth a lot. You guys played it great with the wind and your agate hunting skills are impressive. It was a treat to see this area through your lens. You can never see it all in one trip but you picked so many great spots.
Oh my! This was absolutely stunning! Thankyou so much for sharing it. At times the beauty made tear up!My soul soaked in the tranquillity and grounded me! I loved the transition from island to moon and sunset to moonrise very very nice. Your capture in each scene is truly masterful. I love how Tyeize can speak without words by her funny little looks. And your minimal narration allows the quietness to seamlessly flow. What a gift to those of us that can't get out there. I thank you both for sharing your trip. Also sorry for your loss! Warm Regards from Aus 💚🌺
Thank you for your kind words! I am happy to hear you enjoyed it. It motivates me to hear from you what sharing these places means to you.
Sorry for your loss Max. Thank you for sharing your family & adventures. I find your adventures educational & exciting. Your creativity shines through so vividly. Can't take my eyes away from the screen. Best wishes to you & yours from Florida.
Thank you so much Rebecca, I am so glad you came along for the journey!
Maxim…you’re a genius in slowing down and showing the stillness of time 👍🏼
Keep at it please!
**All ads watched and thumbed up**
Finally!
Edit:
So sorry man! My deepest condolences to you and your family. How proud your grandfather must of been of you!
Excellent stuff Max. Many unbelievable vistas captured in stunning detail.
Loved your video. Sorry for your loss
Thank you, Eileen! We miss him but I am happy he is in a better place now... Thank you for your kind words
A beautiful video about the enjoyment of nature, its sites and sounds by two beautiful souls experiencing it..❤️✨️🙏👍
Thank you so much Fernando! Thanks again for watching!@
When you said a little bit slower, I thought to myself, it’s about time somebody slows down on one of these adventures and takes their time, and enjoys the trip more than being on a schedule. I realize everybody can’t take their time like that, that’s just a thought that I so often think. Thanks for the video.
Great trip! I enjoy your viewpoint of nature and the land. Thanks.
Sorry to hear of your grandfather’s passing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
🙏
Max sorry for your loss. Beautiful video. Thais es muito linda
Thank you for bringing us with you. Superior is spectacular. I'm truly sorry for the loss of your grandfather.
You are very welcome and thank you very much for joining me!
that rock at 5:40 looks like the planet jupiter with red spot intact, really great video and as always wonderful photography and editing.thank you and take care from oklahoma.
Haha, that's exactly what I thought. "Look, a baby Jupiter! Just give it a few hundred million years to put on some weight." :)
haha ya thats why filmed it. Thais pointed it out to me because of that as well. Greeting from Ontario!
What a wonderful film, Maxim! All the best for Thais and you! 🩵
your videos just keep getting better and better. Nice work. Couldn't imagine how long it took to edit. Missed you and Thais. hope we get videos more frequently.
Thank you so much Darrell. This one was a bit brutal to edit to be honest. More because the technical difficulties I faced than anything else. I hope to get more videos more frequently .
Great trip I really appreciate your chill demeanor and knowledgable commentary. I thought l knew something about the terraced cobbles and the records they revealed. I had no idea they included the last 3k years and post glacial rebound. Wow! Thais spark energizes every moment. So sorry for your loss. My condolences to you and your family. Such a great tribute this video is to your grandpa and memories he left you to cherish.
Thanks for sharing your trip and your reflections Maxim. The scenery and wildlife shots were amazing. What trip would not be complete without a geologic and geomorphology lesson, otter zoomies and reliving your wifes great lake trout catch the day (or should I say night) the day after:)
A wonderful tribute and dedication to your Grandfather I am sure he would be proud of as well. Your trip was inspiring to watch as indeed it like life need not be a race encumbered by deadlines.
Looking forward to your next adventure including Thais of course:)
Thanks Mark! Really appreciate you taking the time to enumerate the things you enjoyed. It was an amazing trip and I am really glad you came along!
Max what an incredible trip! Video is amazing!
Thank you so much!
Canoeing Lake Superior looks awesome. Nothing better than Lake Superior in my opinion. I live in Minnesota and visit the Minnesota side of the lake every year for hiking etc. eventually I’d like to buy a canoe or kayak and explore the lake. Thanks for the video.
Thanks! I have yet to explore your side of the lake which looks totally different in some ways. I can't wait to do that. I once did a hiking trip in pukaskwa and came across a kayaker who convinced me the best way to see the lake is from the water. Now having paddled a few times I couldn't agree more.
That was awesome Max. A pleasure to watch, as are all your other videos 🙌🏼 For Thais’ sake, I hope the tent vents were open when those lentil farts were dropping!
Thanks! I will leave it up to her to remember ;)
Those agates tho! Excellent upload.
Ya they are really incredible!
Well done Max & Thais!!
Thanks!
Sub'd, liked, and now a comment. What a great video, Max and Thais! I look forward to more.
Man you KNOCKED ME OUT with this Video! My soul and brain dances AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Haha thanks Georgio really appreciate that!
Great work Max !
Thank you Max, and Thais. Your videos are always thoughtful, visually striking, and relaxing. And that girl of yours is a playful, funny woman. You deserve her (but don't tell her I said this, it will go to her head. ;-) )
haha thanks! She sure is funny, I will try not to corrupt her🙂
I should have packed a lunch going straight from Jon’s video to this one lol😊
Almost 6 hours total of amazing scenery
Haha thats a full day! Thanks for watching Alan!
Good to see a new video 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Good to see you again!
I so enjoy your videos, as you guys are kind of science nerds like me. Given all of my orthopedic issues, I doubt that I'll ever get to visit these wild places and find the agate and the low-bush blueberries like that. (We have huckleberries, but they're usually small, and you have to fight the ticks and chiggers for them, not to mention the poisonous snakes.) I do have to make a bird ID correction, and it might be a life bird for you. At around the 48 minute mark, you labeled a bird a Northern Rough-winged Swallow, but it was actually an Alder Flycatcher. Belonging to the empidonax family, they are fairly hard to ID unless they are singing, which this one was. We get them in fall migration here in the middle US. Thanks for taking me along!!!
O Thank you for the correction! By the time I get around to naming the wildlife in my videos I am usually thoroughly exhausted by the edit and don't spend as much time as I should confirming everything. I will put a note in the description with your correction. Thanks for your valuable insights!
That weird noise on the beach you heard in the night, sounded a bit like fox to me. I'm in UK and it reminds me of the foxes I hear in the woods where I live. But I'm certainly no expert on Canadian animals, I only know what I see from your and similar channels (which I am addicted to!). Another beautiful film with beautiful people and places. Thank you.
Yes it has come to my attention that it was a red fox. So you are right. I have seen many foxes before but never have heard them make that noise. Thanks for watching!
@@maximbudnick Yes, I too was going to advise it was a red fox. I live near a River & hear their cries like that. Sometimes even twice as loud as that, but it's scary as they sound in such distress! Anyhow, Maxim Thank You; for bringing all of us along! Your L. Superior trip was literally Superior! I swear, all the wildlife; birds, otters, porcupines, animals come out to greet you on your adventures! What an awesome eye you have to capture their beauty & Thank you for sharing it all with us, as I appreciate it fully! I'm very sorry for your loss of your Grandpa & I do hope your trip brought you some Peace in your heart. I'm sure you felt him watching over you & your wife while you were paddling & enjoying nature at its finest. I just ❤ your Videos, thoughts, history & insights you share. Missed ya & glad you're back at it. ❤🙏✨ E
humbling thumbnail change. phenomenal video!
Thanks! Its always tricky to know what works with the thumbnail. I am still pretty clueless to be honest 😅
So excited to see a new Maxim video!! ❤
Hope you like it!
@maximbudnick I did, very much
This was your best yet. The videography was terrific, especially those wonderful close ups of flowing water.
It was nice to see you being more relaxed with talking to the camera, showing more of your personality.
We're sorry to hear about your grandfather. He sounds like a wonderful man.
Hey thanks for that! I struggle with talking to the camera, never felt super natural at it. Glad you think there is some improvement.
That was splendid❤
🙂
Fantastic video! I hope my kids do a tribute adventure like this when I'm gone.
Thanks! 🙏
Wow - always left insipired! I’ve explored so much but never considered Great Lakes…. This was such a great documentary if the trip 💪🏽🛶💪🏽🏕️❤️
Its honestly a revelation to have something so epic so close. If you have common sense and some experience its just such an incredible place to visit. Thanks!
@ 100%
I’m planning my 155 km trip gamble lake to foreence / lady Evelyn down to Wakinika lake & end at emerald lake Temagami.
Hoping to get a dry suit soon to plan a big lake trip and add to my rock collection

Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge of this amazing lake and the drone footage was beautiful. A most wonderful video, full of adventure, peace, fascination, beauty, and knowledge-sharing. A feeling of intimacy. Loved the wildlife, wildflowers, rocks, and vistas. Thank you! Also rich, appropriate background sound track. Yours?

Greatest Lake? It better be Lake Superior! My favorite lake!
😀 Hope you enjoy!

Yes, more stones!
Amazing!! Can’t wait to see more! Good job on camera work!! I really would like to know what animal made that sound
