Make sure you choose the correct wattage for your solar panel and water pump, example, if your solar panel is 12v DC 50 watts, make sure to choose a water pump that accepts 12v DC, and try to aim for around 20-40 watts as your solar panel will rarely produce 50 watts if its rated 50 watts (even with direct sunlight). - Навчання та стиль

UPDATE ON MY POND AFTER 4 YEARS: the concrete is still holding solid. This design is not 100% flawless, as I did run into a few issues. After the first winter, the concrete between the tiles and the pond cracked, i should not have joined the tiles with the pond as there was no gravel underneath the tiles. The cracks the tiles caused, some of them extended to the topside of the pond. This was not a big deal as the pond still held water almost to the brim but aesthetically didn't look so great. I decided to cover the concrete with a pond liner so that i dont have to deal with those cracks. For those who are saying chicken wire won't hold, that is not true in my case, it works great, another reason the topside of the pond cracked is because i didn't put chicken wire at the top area, everywhere else where there is chicken wire, the concrete is super solid.
If i were to redo the pond, i would omit the tiles, and also give it shallow sides so that i can put plants around it in the water.

From experience I can tell you that the chicken wire reinforcement is not going to hold for more than a couple of years. It needs to be more rigid. I use hog fencing panels.

Very good video. I used the chicken wires as well before watching your video. I used because those were sitting in my house and I wanted to use. I cut some wire and pinned those wires and its so strong now that can't move. i am going to use mortar mix to build the pond and then I will use cement to plaster and will use some liquid membrane to make it waterproof and then will build the wall. I am doing myself and no help and I am a small person. Mixing the cement is the most labor intensive. I took 3-4 days to dig my pond.
Why use mortar mix ? Mortar generally is a bad idea for ponds, so you going tout cement to plaster on top of the mortar ?
@@westbccoast my pond will be for Lotus plants. So I used mortar mix to fill the chicken wires, then used cement to plaster and sprayed some gorilla waterproof spray on top of the cement. It was pure experimental and I had no prior experience. Its only 2 months so I need to wait till next to find out the quality I built.

You can also use jet set is a concrete finish for cracks that use it at my job for concrete pipes for sewage if it does crack and it also is easy for a finish so you can have a nice smooth finish
A lot of the money went into that rubber sealant. You can make a cement, acrylic adhesive, 2% xypex slurry to paint on the concrete to seal.
but is the xypex slurry toxic? will it kill the fish?

I want to build a concrete pond but add an overflow pipe. That way I don't have to add chemicals. The pond will naturally get filled when it rains and overflow. If it doesn't rain, I'll add a little with the hose. I also want a small island in the center for turtles. So a few challenges.
I'm building one now for my 2 turtles.
They've outgrown their tank.

Awesome. We had ponds and our big dogs tore up the liners. So we would like to redo it with concrete. Do you think we should put a liner under the concrete? And instead of using chicken wire, we have wire farm fence. Well that work as well? Our ponds are bigger than the one you showed, and they are two pond connected together with a ditch type space. And do they sell waterproof sealer in anything besides black or how do we get it so that you can see to the bottom?

Hello, I would like to know, when did you put the tarpaulin while building the tank? After you laid the wire mesh ?
Tarpaulin was used to cover the concrete... he put the wire mesh in place and then added concrete, kept it moist with water and then covered it with the tarpaulin. He used it to prevent cracks while curing as he said!

I see a lot of issues with this. The rubber idea is great but does it specifically say it's okay for pond use where the pond liners actually are made for ponds? There is a reason why everyone uses those. Concrete cracks over time no matter what. The ground you walk on is always moving. The liner you buy should be EPDM rated. Just saying. If you are going to spend $1000 and build a pond this big you might as well spend that money on rocks and pumps that circulate water with filters to keep your pond liveable for your investment.
I wish you the best and hope you did some research before you do this. There are many types of systems. Trust me you will appreciate these much more.
Why not use water-(when dry) and frost proof concrete? If you dont use frostproof concrete in places that winter time temperature get under 0 youre concrete will brake.

After 1 year(i published this video 1 year after building pond), with 8 months of harsh Canadian winter, its holding up pretty well, I will do an update video this summer, however one thing I regret is using black liquid rubber, they have one in white color too, I should've used white because its hard to see the bottom of the pond with a black colored pond.

Yes it is tacky, it will stay tacky because it is not meant to be walked on, so if you step often on the rubber, it could damage it, but I dont think you'd be jumping in and out of a pond often. If you are worried that the liquid rubber comes off and your pond leaks, you could get a concrete acrylic fortifier, its a liquid based additive you can add to your concrete mix that will make the concrete more stronger, durable and more water resistant, so this way you can have double protection from leakages, liquid rubber + water resistant concrete.

depends on the local weather, mist it with water in the beginning, put the tarp over, then check 2 times daily to make sure it stays moist, if its not moist, then mist more.
Misleading title... I wasn't sure thought, you know, if it could be done so I watched.. I didn't think it was possible to dig, shape, mix and spread concrete and final coat in under 4 mins.. LOL

If you're going to spend that kind of money anyway, you could just use hydraulic cement and let it cure underwater.
How did you apply the concrete?
simple, you put enough water into the concrete mix so that you can easily handle it and it wont fall down as you slam some on the sides directly on soil/dirt, through the chicken wire

i built it in summer, you just have to make sure that you are moisturizing the concrete properly as it cures, the hotter the weather, the more often you gotta moisten.
i was cleanning the backyard pond that my 2 nephews constructed during Summer (it's about the same size as in this video). Then i thought, wtf...i've never heard or seen anybody cleans their pond. Dont they self clean themself with a filter machine...thingy? Stupid me, boy ..i sure cleaned it alright. Took all them fishes out, completely emptied the pond, hosed n scrub it down. Now, I dont know wat rubber..plastic..tarp..waterproof material..thingy they use to hold them water in. They should of doubled it or make em heavy duty. Cos, i think i might have punctured it. Well, after i 've cleaned it...out. I was putting them rocks back in, a few must have sharp edges. And i think i might have not put them back in Gently enough. Ok...okay, i wss dropping n tossing it.Anyway...how thick does the cement has to be?

depends on what the finish is, if its liquid rubber, the instructions on the can says how long before pouring water.

Portland cement + industrial sand, should be fine. Using liquid rubber on waterproof concrete is extra protection, its up to you if you want to do that, I recommend it because a crack in the concrete will leak water whether its waterproof or not, but the liquid rubber is flexible so it can cover small cracks if they were to appear. Another alternative is Xypex, its also VOC free.

I was thinking okay another failed concrete pond idea but I watched this and was a little impressed. But I can't say I would build a fish pond this way. Esthetically yes it should work. Maybe.
But I would suggest you think about the future. The rubber coating is not fish safe. EPDM Pond liners are. That's what they are made for. It's actually designed for fish. You waited 2 weeks for the concrete to dry constantly making sure it was not going to dry so you could avoid it from cracking. Which means it would leak. The ground beneath you is always going to shift. That's why we have earth quakes, land slides when the ground soaks up on hill sides, sink holes and etc.
Pond liners will move and never leak unless you somehow cut or puncture the liner. It's rated for UV, and temperature changes. The best part is if you decide to relocate your pond or make changes you just dig out behind the liner and backfill it as needed. With concrete you are stuck with your form.
Just do some research before you invest that much money. Oh yeah pond kits are much cheaper than you think. Just add rocks, water, fish and plants. You are set.

One thing you want to do is build a high enough lip, so nothing on the ground runs into the pond like fertilizer from the grass etc

@@77Avadon77 dont have to have a drain , can use a sump pump. But needs a spill over.if its outside. It will crack though later.
