    I have experience with both. For my pond, I first tried liners. I went through three liners (about 125 each) … all three times … despite utilizing a buffer underlay and the older liner on top …. I experienced leakage. It was VERY difficult to locate the leaks. I finally dismantled all the liners and it turns out some of the boulders had cut through the liner(s) thus creating leaks. So now I have rep, aced with concrete. The concrete contains water proofer and fibers to help make it more crack resistant. I also painted a fish safe water proof layer over the finished concrete. Just completed project and have not tested yet … but, from my perspective here are the pros/cons of each type … mind you I am a do it yourselves with no deep experience in either method. Vinyl liner: pros - not permanent, more flexible, moveable. Cons - not as strong, wrinkles and plastic look is harder to hide, prone to tears if in a rocky area with rocks also on top, harder to customize shape. Concrete: pros - easier to customize shape, can hold and accommodate heavier rock work, more durable and easier to identify and fix cracks. Cons - more permanent and May be harder to move, demolish or modify, and can be more expensive and more work (digging, forms, mixing, pouring, forming, water proofing, etc.) … especially if one hires out. Cost on both was about equivalent as I did myself and considering all three leaky liners. Thanks for the post and best of luck all! Max in Seattle

    The nice thing about the liner is if you decide to make the pond bigger later on it’s easier to do than starting the concrete all over.

      That concrete is for ponds that are already designed to be huge. Most DIYers make small ponds because of the work that it requires.

    Hi,
    My late father had a Greenhouse which I have since removed, the stone area is what it stood on which I will put rocks on, I am moving the earth for the water area, I will use it for Newts it Frogs but I don't know wether I want concrete or liner, If I go with concrete how do I put it on the side walls? I understand I will need a few inches of gravel on the base before the concrete is laid but again what about the sides?
    Thanks for any help.

    Menurut saya Kolam Beton memiliki beberapa kelebihan sehingga saya lebih menyarankan untuk mengembangkan Kolam Beton. Beberapa kelebihan Kolam Beton yaitu:
    Terima kasih.

    If you're up for something permanent, concrete pond is for you. It's expensive though since, you know, it requires concrete. Rubber liner is you are more finicky and tends to change your mind more people. You can move it around your land if you want to have a new look.

    I built a waterfall with a small stream leading to a pondless catch basin using a rubber liner. I had to replace one of my liners and where the new one over lapped, due to unavoidable wrinkles in my liner, the seal tape wouldn't hold and I'm losing water. I am going to try and cement the area of the overlap on top of my liner and wrinkles. Does anyone have any advice for me? I've been working on this for 4 yrs now and still haven't had it leak proof.

    I personally don't like the idea of a pond liner. Back in the 1960s my dad had a swimming pool put in our backyard. It was rebar, gunite, and plaster. We lived 4 miles from the epicenter of the 1971 Sylmar 6.5 earthquake. The earthquake didn't cause any cracks in the main structure of the pool.

      You have to let it cure first you can also acid wash it, or use vinegar. This neutralizes the lime from leaching into the water.
      Lastly... paint it with a concrete paint for water, or perhaps better yet, an EPDM liquid rubber paint, I believe concrete cured and washed properly with the addition of a coat or two of liquid EPDM paint is the best option. I think some would just saw concrete, cured thoroughly and 'washed' with an acid/water or vinegar, and rinsed thoroughly is best.

    • @SacramentoKoi
      @SacramentoKoi  8 років тому +1

      That's how thick you pour a house foundation. This guy just wants to charge more money for over engineering things. Also he talks about concrete raising the value of your house? It takes AWAY. It is taxed because it is permanent unlike a liner pond. I had to fill in my pond in my last house i sold in CA because there is so many regulations about having open water in your yard, it was almost impossible to sell.

    Kolam beton memang lebih disarankan daripada kolam terpal, namun bukan berarti kolam jenis lainnya tidak bagus tapi hal ini berdasarkan lama pemakaian atau pun daya ketahanan dari kolam beton memang sangat bagus, karena kolam beton bersifat kuat, kokoh dan tidak mudah bocor. Jika memang terjadi kebocoran maka dalam memperbaikinya tidaklah sulit dan cenderung mudah untuk diperbaiki. Kolam beton juga memberikan suatu nilai yang membuatnya terlihat lebih baik dan indah. Pada perawatan pun kolam beton hanya memerlukan biaya yang ringan, namun yang menjadi kelemahannya yaitu dalam pembuatannya diawal sangat membutuhkan biaya yang sangat besar.
