    I'm a 69 YO , retired due to spinal issues in 2020. I returned to playing Drums as a Personal pleasure / recreational hobby , playing bto My Music. I was gifted a cheapo Gammon drum kit in 2018, by all people, my wife of 46 years. I have not played drums for 50 years !!! learned by ear , played simple stuff (No Bonham, Baker or Moon), but always loved it and always played Air Drums. Now I'm back. Watching these and other UA-cam videos has been a tremendous contribution to my education about this Instrument. I have experimented with at least 3 or 4 drum heads on my 3 Toms. 12, 13 and 16 inch (the snare was replaced with a DW Design Series Snare 14 X 6.5 Nickel over Brass Used with a Evans HD Dry snare head [loved it]), Toms , I tried : Remo Ambassadors; Evans G1 coated , Evans G1 clear , Attack ToneRidge and now G2s Clear. To my ear , the G2s on the Batter head, and G1s clear on the Reso are approaching the sound I would like to achieve. In fact, one of the Toms sound "better" with a Remo coated Reso head vs the G1clear.
    The Attacks were Ok but are the "heaviest" of the crop, and since the drums are mixed woods (not maple), the sound with the Attacks didn't satisfy. Do you think the Evans UV2s would make a difference? Or am I wasting money? FYI, having better grade drums does make a difference. I received a pdp Concept Maple 10 X 8 Rack Tom for Xmas , attached to one of my cymbal stands, (of course , I got all new Paiste P7s and P8 cymbals), and Whoa !!! . I'm searching Web now for a Used pdp Concept Maple shell pack.

    These are intriguing. I've had really great luck with the G2's and so the roughly $10 more a head for these seems hard to justify unless they really last way longer. Most of my tuning situations are pretty low right now so if these hold up under that it could be worth it I suppose. Great content as always guys. I don't get why you don't have a larger subscriber base.
    Edit: I just saw in the description that you'll be doing a G2 comparison! Excited to see that.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому

      They certainly cost more (though the pricing for tom packs seems like an excellent way to go if you're outfitting a full set of toms) but these are easily significantly more durable than the G2's. One of the reasons why I went with a lower tuning for these specifically is because that's where heads tend to be most susceptible to wear and these have really held up/
      Thanks for the kind words. As for the size of the subscriber base, we're very grateful for our community and their efforts to help spread the word about what we're doing. This channel isn't all about flashy playing and drum covers, so it's understandable why it's not necessarily entertaining for everyone but hopefully it's providing actionable insights for those that do follow the series. For those that are looking for even more, we've got our Patreon, which is where the G2 vs. UV2 comparison will be released.
      Cheers!

    Only two ply heads I ever really liked are the hydraulics. I tried the UV1s and honestly found this weird plastic "clicky" sound every time my stick hit the head that drove me nuts! I use wood tips and never found this with any other heads. I read a few similar reviews so it has to be something with the uv coating. Not a problem with the regular evans sprayed coating or clear heads. Not as pronounced with hard playing but I don't hit hard, it was a test. I could see heavy handers who like open drum sounds using them but I am surprised by how many jazz cats are flying them.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому +3

      I think that unique contact sound (attack) is a combination of the coating and the material itself. The films being used haven't been used in previous models of Evans heads. The nice thing is that there are so many options out there allowing us all to find the right gear for the gig. Cheers! -Ben

      I agree - I have two UV1s that sit around and get thrown on just to see if anything’s changed. Everytime I put them on there’s this weird feeling under the stick as well as a sound that isn’t as responsive or crisp as anything else I’ve used - 2 ply heads and thick dry heads included. Curious if giving just the good old G1 ago will be worth my time because I do like Evan’s product offering but have been playing Remo as of late.

    Maybe the same kind of thing with the clear collar on the bearing edge with a 2-3” clear spot right in the middle.

    I haven’t been impressed with Uv1 so far. I slapped one on my church snare and tested Steve Gad brushes on it and the coating already scratched off it after five minutes of playing. Also it sounded rather flat on my snare even after a day of stretching from playing and tuning. Your video sounds great but I’m skeptical of the coating lasting longer since for me it scratches off faster than normal coating.

      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому +3

      We are not sponsored by Evans but they provide heads for our Tuesday series. As you can probably imagine, all the drumheads we need in order to produce this series would get quite expensive so we’re grateful for the support of Evans in helping make these videos possible.
      While we’ve had conversations with Remo about working on things together outside of our weekly Tuesday videos, they’ve been unresponsive for a while now. We totally respect if they don’t have any interest in supporting what we’re doing- that’s completely up to them.
      One of the reasons why we did an episode on the UV2 in particular was because we had been asked to test the prototypes last year and we’ve received quite a few inquiries about the final versions. It’s very rare that we focus on a single, specific model of drumhead within this series but this is a worthwhile process to consider for testing any new drumhead, regardless of brand. Cheers!

    I did a gig on a cruise and the snare from the backline kit had a UV1 snare drum head. The orchestra drummer had put duct tape strips to control overtones, and seeing as how I don't like my snare drum sound with any muffling, I removed the tape strips. The tape pulled the coating right off as easy as if it was freshly spray painted a couple of hours before. Evans needs to take a look at what Aquarian is doing with coating drum heads. Aquarian's coating is practically indestructible, and their tone is amazing, so much so that after 30 years, I'm switching over to Aquarian from Remo..That, and the simple fact that they cost a lot less than Remo and Evans, is a no brainer for any working drummer, whether your on a budget or not..
