In this sound comparison, the Drum.Dog team sets out to discover the exact difference resonant head tuning makes to an overall tom sound! When we tune we often put a lot of focus on the batter head, but is the resonant head as important for the overall sound? Let's find out!

Always gone higher on the reso getting closer to even on floor Tom’s. This vid confirm that. Don’t be afraid of a little ring and gobs of sustain. Always sounds 100% better to those out in front of the house.

Defo's going to be trying the high tuning out. I like toms to be heard, especially when you're not miked up. Also like the fact that the rebound increases too. Thanks for this video guys.

I like the pitch bend of the high reso.

It's a mistake to tune the drums without getting a buddy to hit them so you can walk away from the kit and actually hear what everybody else usually hears, then you may need to make more tuning adjustments. Great work on this video..

Wow - 1/4 turn on each tensioner on the resonate heads produced an amazing sustain on the 16” floor tom and a much richer sound for al the other Tom’s (and 10,12,&14. Great job on the video.

I tend to have high reso heads on big drums. I tried it out on my 16x16 FT one day and it just worked for me. I also have my BD reso higher than usual, which seems to work especially great on 20" kicks. I've experimented with different techniques, but in the end usually just trust my ears and tune for pitch and sustain or the lack of thereof.

Great video! I did this comparison awhile back on my own kit and found i enjoyed when the reso was slightly higher than the batter.

Great video. Exactly what I was looking for. I see your point about it depends on the kind of sound you're looking for.

In what way did the medium - medium tuning differ from batter and reso tuned the same?

I'm pretty sure they are tuned in intervals even when it said medium - medium. Tuned the same is obviously same pitch both sides.

Interesting analysis! I have to use my headphones since I don't appreciate any big difference in sound when changing the reso head. Thank you.

Nice work! I prefered the medium and high. Although the latter made the overall pitches a bit too high. This could get even more interesting (using a tunebot etc.) if the drums were tuned to the same overall pitch, but changing the relation of top and bottom head pitch. Cheers!

Nice video, for many years I always tunned reso heads same as batter. Now days I'm tunning reso about 25 % higher. In this demo they sounded better the higher you tunned the reso, could it be the BUBINGA shells?

High on the redo. Kind of try to do a perfect third between heads. More or less.

what is the name of your tom mount on the right hand side of your kit, that has the spike mount?

Yes rack toms benefit from higher tuning on resos. The floor toms I find work better at the same pitch unless you playing jazz.
