As someone who has worked in IT for many, many years I just want to say this: Keep backups. Good backups. If you keep good backups, you will NEVER need to pay a ransom, EVER!!! Get these criminals out of business by backing up your data!!!
I worked for a company in the 90's that, in addition to the regular system backups, backed up all data every evening to two external drives locally, and two external drives for removal to two different off site locations that were driven off by two different employees every evening. These drives were not accessible by the network except for the backup process. If data needed to be recovered, it was first accessed by an independent user who could copy the drives to another computer for decryption and recovery, but the backups never touched the network. I am sure things have gotten easier now, but having a two physical drives in secure locations struck me as a good idea.

When I arrived, I was told there were daily backups, weekly backups, and monthly backups all on tape. I was shown the storage room with all the racks of tapes. So I installed the replacement drive and tried to restore a daily backup tape. No luck...the tape was blank. I tried a weekly backup...also blank. I asked if anyone had ever restored any of the tapes in the past and was told it had never been necessary. The obvious answer was no one had ever checked to see if the backup process actually worked.

In the framework of intelligence activities underway with its operational counterparts, Europol developed reliable intelligence concerning a drug trafficking cartel flooding Europe with cocaine. The main targets, who used encrypted communications to organise the shipments, were identified in the participating authorities.
Europol has since then hosted multiple coordination meetings in the past 2 years in order to bring together the different countries working on the same targets to establish a joint strategy to bring down the whole network. More than 10 operational meetings took place at Europol in this period.
In addition, Europol has been provided continuous intelligence development and analysis to support the field investigators. During the action, Europol facilitated the real-time coordination among all the partners involved, ensuring swift tactical decisions to adjust the strategy as required.
Eurojust provided cross-border judicial support to the French and Belgian authorities regarding seven arrests in both countries and organised four coordination meetings to prepare for these actions

24:57 _".. we knew that once we took their server down the netwalker software would cease to operate ..."_
So, a group of people depending on targets that don't do a rolling incremental backup on wtite-only memory didn't care to have multiple distributed backups of their own software?
In a certain sense that might be even called "honest", to allow to be vulnerable yourself in the same way that you expect your targets to be vulnerable.
And how did the police know that in advance? That maybe much like with the Hydra in Greek mythology two other servers, activated on a kind of a dead man switch on the server that was shutdown wouldn't pop up within minutes?
I feel the retelling of the story skipped over some important aspects, probably for good reasons.
So many devils in this world, karma to all of them.
Great report!
Nice job with the investigation from the USA.
And their criminal justice system is better than ours. 🇺🇸 20 years vs 🇨🇦 7 years
Victims won’t divulge simply because being public with that will ruin their business.
We cry that hacking is terrible but when people live in poverty and struggle, is life!!We value money/possessions over everyday people..Who is the actually victim I sometimes wonder where will we end up as people🧐
Check out Luke 16:19-31 The answer Jesus gives is pretty clear to me.

The hacking business, one of the most unstoppable criminal business will continue growing up every day.
Always back up your data and keep it OFFLINE . Then if something does happen, you can recover. I despise hackers.
Maybe...I was once called to an emergency where a company's hard drive on a Honeywell Mid range (yes, it was a long time ago) had failed and the company wanted to get a new drive and restore the system.

The moral of the story: 1. Non-logging VPN's and switch services between jobs. 2. Use public WIFI and have various logon points.
I'd like to know how you get a job with the Canadian federal government if you have a criminal record especially for the large quantities that he had I wasn't like he was some small-time dealer

Huge amounts of power wasted and IT STILL knocks down computers.
Give them life without parole, and confiscate all assets of family and friends.
their family and friends didn't commit computer crimes. that's an entirely emotional response.

I am halfway through the video... I wonder if Rogers is gonna fess up? 😅 ... Rogers position is that the network went down because of "updates". Pfft... the doublespeak of update doesn't even really work. netwalker would be a new install. not an update. nonetheless it saddened me that the corporation lied that day... and it sucks the government either... didn't notice the lie... didnt care... or even supported it. 🙄
Great idea!
Backups are essential yes but what else is important in this story? Why do hackers do this? $$$ How much money did the companies making COVID vaccines make? Who are the next generation of hackers? What will their motivation be? Why is critical infrastructure becoming more reliant on the internet? etc etc etc.
What a disgusting speech from the lawyer. As alwayys, trying to victimize the criminals forgetting all the damage to the real victims

So similar to intimate partner violence (IPV), also known as the "Shadow Epidemic".
Think about this with the governmental Vax tracking and ArriveCan. You either are okay with people in power knowing your business or you aren't.
Vax Tracking ,Arrive can, ? You need to provide evidence of what you accuse. Freedom of speech does not protect Lies,Rumors ,Gossip. And stop spreading false information.
If you have a passport, a bank account or a driver's licence, or you pay your taxes- or all four-- that ship has sailed. All of your information is stored online. The CRA had a huge leak a little while ago.
