As someone who was raised in the Mormon church and is (at this moment) sitting at a block away from downtown Salt Lake just blocks away from the LDS temple. All Churches are meant to be tax exempt. There is a reason for this. If you tax a religious organization that violates the separation between Church and state and Churches will have every right to be involved (in every way) in politics. The wall of separation is tax exemption.
A lot like Scientology, it's all about the money. Both of these churches should lose their tax free status. The leaders of this churches should be prosecuted and sent to prison.

One of the big differences between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other religions is that it is a lay church. People volunteer thier time. Even the President of the church is not paid. He had a long career as a heart surgeon before joining the leadership. This allows for more money to be put into serving others. Things like the welfare system (ranches, orchards, processing plants), education (universities, online degrees, training & practicums) and of course humanitarian projects. The church gave over 1 billion to humanitarian aid in 2023 alone. The church covers overhead so 100% of donations go to the projects.

My husband is from El Salvador, in Central America. We have known for years that the Mormon church is owner of one of the most valuable pieces of property there, a sprawling ranch on the shore of Lake Ilopango that is surrounded by high walls and is very secretive. You don't see the Church there open the gate to host activities for children or help the poor. The land just is in a state of holding. It would be worth many millions of dollars, that ranch, in my estimation.
BonnieMcDermid. The church is really the first to respond to disasters in multiple areas of the world. The church is one of the few religions who believe in education for less developed countries and finance it for many. If you are blessed help others. The church emphasis is to love others and to help them.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the largest single landowner in the United States, from huge ranching and orchard operations, to the SLC mall to luxury apartment buildings. When did God approve this?
It’s not the largest. And the church built the mall to revitalize downtown and it worked. If we are to be a worldwide church then we need to be able to fund that.
Where did $1 Billion go? How about the same place that the original records of births , deaths, and marriages went that never were returned or copied..............

It may be that the church is following Canada's laws, regardless of whether the interviewees approve or not. This news report makes plenty of allegations of corruption, but where are the indictments from the Canadian or US governments? It's been two years since the "whistleblower guy" did his expose in the US, but I have read about no Federal lawsuits, no indictments, no IRS anything. Or what about the Canada Revenue Agency? Our society is different. Even without religion or politics mixed into it, we do not hug and kiss for public display. It is nothing even related to homophobia. We respect other people’s private space and public sensibilities and it may also be perhaps, a mix of cultural beliefs and practices. Overwhelming affections that may have sexual intimacy variety are best done in private, and the best to display it is only with your partner in a room where nobody needs to witness it. Patting the shoulders briefly if he or she is a family or friend, or shaking hands to congratulate, smile, even bow down or acknowledging with nodding of head, waving, will just do fine in public.

I'm sorry but I don't. There is a plethora of stories about churches scamming people for centuries. I think churches need to have their tax exempt status re-examined. Especially Mega Churches and churches that wade into politics.
It's never been a secret that tithing money is used to supplement university education at BYU. I, as a Canadian, obtained my bachelor's from one of the smaller campuses and was often reminded that my low tuition was only due to the sacrifice and tithes of others. Tithing supplements the education of those from around the world who pay as little as $100 US per year to obtain a university degree (including housing, food, courses, and insurance). A large portion of the land owned is orchards, ranches, and farms in the US that provide food for the churches' welfare system. These items are shared with those both in Canada and around the world. I'm disappointed no mention of the bishops' storehouses in Canada not mentioned. Other land holdings included those for chapels, temples, university campuses, historical sites, family camping sites etc.
Not Mormon, but one of my close friends growing up was, and it's exactly that; she had to pay the fraction of the cost of a typical out of state college which made it affordable to her. I'm not a supporter of the church, however, I feel the documentary missed an opportunity to explain that.
Not Mormon, but an Australian tax payer. I hope the Australian government strips this whack job outfit of its tax deductible status sooner rather than later. Believe whatever bullshit you want, but I don’t want to help pay for it.
When I was a kid I often went hungry because my mom paid tithing. The church would "help" us by giving us boxes of canned beans and corn that expired five years earlier.
We are not under the law but under Christ . In Christ Jesus living in grace in the new testament there is no tithe. Paul Peter never took tithes. The only giving spoken of if from a willing cheerful heart offering from your heart.
We need a true separation between church and state. Tax-exempt status should not be given to any church (cult) that advocates and teaches doctrines that have no basis in fact or reality. We should defund all of these institutions by making them pay the same taxes as any other corporation. This is important at this point in time because we are facing a mass extinction event that is, in large part, the result of doctrines that define human beings as a privileged species that is above all other species and which is destined to rule, and dominate all other life forms. This view forms the basis of our culture and it is the product of predatory religious practices that are destroying the ecology upon which all of us depend.
No, that would not be just nor right! Yes, remove the tax exemption from the church as in this video! You ought not paint all church denominations with the same brush! Remember, the accountant said he experienced the transparency in the other churches’ denominations accounting!? But not in the Mormon Church! My experience has been the complete budget transparency and much of the money went to the humanitarian causes! Many small churches barely have enough money to pay their basic bills!
This idea that the church is taking away from governments is hilarious. Also the church needs to start paying taxes this is ridiculous. I’d love for my money back but I also acknowledge that I volunteered my money, even though I was lied to about the church’s truth claims. That money is long gone.

I feel you, I was brought up Catholic until after one Prist started asking for donations $200/$400 and that is when I started rethinking that religion.
Point#8 30:35 There is no church in the world that forces its members to give tithing or else. You give money became you want to, you go to church because you want to, you help people in the street became you want to. To this man and anyone who donates money and want a tax write off on your taxes, then you are not really doing the donation for the right reason. The widow's mite in the Bible. I don't think that she said, hey! want a tax write off document for my donation. Or when Judas betrayed Jesus, she said what a false of a church I want my money back. If anyone is going to do an act of charity towards another, do it became it's in your heart without thinking first on writing it off on your taxes. This man is bitter.
That's not even getting into the fact that tithe was collected by coercion, literally threatening to lock you out of temple access (and thus ordinances vital for one's salvation) if one did not do everything in their power to pay at _least_ 10% of gross income.
Dont want to judge or critique LDS" theology. But I feel like any religion that says you should pay your tithe before feeding your family, should raise massive red flags. Cant imagine any god want people to starve in order to pay tithe

Remove tax exempt status from ALL churches/cults. Edit: Leaving this cult was the smartest/best thing I've ever done for myself. No regrets here!

Everything takes money and it is the faith of those members who pay tithings that these wonderful blessings are expended to facilitate the growth. I think you are stuck with your prejudices and are judging very immaturely and without the full scope of the manner of stewardship over these sacred funds how it all works together. All this show has done is take bitter hurt people who know full well the commitment these members make, and target the church based on people who have nothing better than to badger the good name of this religion. Dig deeper talk to a leader in the church and give fair time to address these questions. The hearts of these members are good, kind generous in so many ways. This show is just looking to take advantage of the hate filled world and collect their own filthy lucre in the name of entertainment.
church leaders don't get paid. its volunteer... service to others
