Im actually subdividing in NORMAL ways like 16th notes and Triplets! Subdividing in an abnormal way would be to play quintuplets or septuplets, and play straight groove to those pulses, then displace the grooves in that form. It seems you have rushed to judgment before truly understanding the concept. -Matt
I totally understand what you just said , i swear ! But honestly Matt , you are my favourite drummer and thank you for giving me the inspiration to work hard and be a better drummer everyday . Peace!
Lmao damn I just caught that. Damn geniuses.. I found an easy way to navigate through subdivisions like this. Play the hi hat in a subdivision ie 8th triplets (3 per click) then accent every 2 notes and add the bass and snare... it sounds complicated. Come check me out I'll have a video about it! Matt G 🙏 you're elevating the drum community. Please feed me more
Since there's a bunch of people asking what's happening, I thought I'd give explaining a shot :) What Matt is doing is displacing the beat. What that means in simple terms is, he's making it sound as if the pulse is somewhere else than it actually is. For example, he displaces by an 8th note, meaning that he makes it sound as if the pulse is an 8th note earlier or later by playing everything an 8th note earlier or later. Note: the underlying pulse stays the same! For example, you can play drum groove number 1 that everyone knows ("kick snare kick snare"..) and place it : - the normal way .. ONE TWO THREE FOUR, kick on ONE and THREE, snare on THREE and FOUR - displace it an 8th note later .. one AND two AND three AND four AND .. now you're playing kick snare kick snare on all the AND's - displace it a 16th note later .. one E and a, two E and a, three E & a, four E & a .. so you're playing kick snare kick snare on the E's - et cetera..
LegitChris_ no dude. From experience, I dropped out. I'm a very successful digital marketer. Make alot more money here than I would as a drummer. Dont get me wrong. I got into berklee on a scholarship but I realized berklee was only gonna validate me as an artist. Not as a musician. I dont need a degree to do that. Berklee cant teach talent. They can help you explore and enhance skill. But alot of the cats you see being from berklee already had that in their blood. If you get it you get it. I'd you dont, I mean. What can I say.
I've read this before. But the wisdom of this comment is always overwhelming. Love your drumming, my friend. You kick ass in AAL. Can't wait for a new album with you in it (:
You know, it's weird I've played like this, "displacement-wise". I just never new their was a term for it. It's so cool to see it in practice with explanation.
oh my god i see now. i see what he has been saying about concepts and not just chops. when he went into that improv section at the displaced tripelets it blew my mind but now i get it. his drumming is just a cacophony of concepts layered over each other with a very strong sense of the music. i am floored. cheers to you matt, if you see this.
For those who are new to the displacement as an exercise, I can tell you that even what he does first, which is the beat with a 16th before or after One, is unbelievably hard to master, which I myself have yet to do, but it is So worth it when it comes to the keeping yourself in time, or pocket as they say.
matt your the man! and i want you to know that second 8th notes displacement is rather difficult and your just a beast and you make it sound like somethin special!
Awesome! I really like your style, you can mix this subdvision ideas so easily and I can understand how it really works now, All the best to you Matt! I hope you can come to Brazil soon! Hugs!
Ive got kind of a simple way to do something similar. Take a met and set it to a somewhat slow tempo and change it so it counts it in triplet notes. Play a standard 4/4 groove and then do a triplet fill. just go down the drums. youl have 1 + a 2 + a 3 + a 4 + a. right? not accent these parts [ ]. [ 1 + ] a 2 [ + a] 3 + [ a 4 ] + a. Normally for a triplet fill youd move drums every quarter note when youre going down the drums. For this fill start out just accenting it only on the snare drum. then instead of accenting the notes in the [ ] change the drum youre hitting at those places.
My heart sank when I found out Navene left Animals as Leaders. But, after watching some of Matt's videos, I can't say that I'm not happy with the replacement. I look forward to seeing them in May:].
So here's the thing...when he plays from 0:57 to 1:35, all you need is some trippy ass synth groove and you have some sick electro/atmospheric music. Anyone else agree?
The 2nd example that he gave based on triplets... That was motherfucking hard :o like he literally displaced the beat while modulating it... Holy crap *_______*
Matt can you put this on sheet music so I can attempt to read to comprehend what your playing. I hear it aurally but would like to also see it on paper
your pretty awesome, are you self-taught or did you take lessons, im 20 almost 21 just got a silverstar 6 piece kit and have taught myself on an electric for like 7 months, ur videos are pretty awesome to learn from though
Matt, is the entire video of this class available? Would love to watch the whole thing. I have been seeing some incredible drumming of you with AAL by the way.
Lol the dude sitting behind Matt is losing his mind at these displacements. Sick video.

Thank you for fucking my mind even further... like if ur displacing septuplets... how fast would you have to be counting at normal tempos????
I totally understand what you just said , i swear !

This is a GREAT reference for Humility and Inspiration.
yes he did, Matt Halpern was going to be the first drummer for AAL. but it is true Misha wrote the drums for the first AAL album.
Good thing you got it
Matt would not have been a bad choice at all. But Matt turned out to be the better choice.
@@tromboneman4517 Matt Greiner vs Matt Halpern vs Matt Gartska.
This is so great, especially for drummers who don't usually practice with a metronome, or even intermediate drummers
This is evil. How can you displace a clinic? What about the patients?

"Garstka used his FUCKIT technique"
" It's super effective"

I love Matts method o explanation and his demonstration. He is one of the young unknown cats coming up. Great job Matty.
This is one of my favorite drum videos on UA-cam
Takes a lot of discipline to practice displacement and subdividing. Respect.
So this the awesomeness they teach at Berklee.
KwikStix_ Check out Gavin Harrison's books. Metric modulation, displacement, polyrhythms.. all sorts of fun stuff.
+Mike Post Are they available on the internet? (pdf) I love Gavin and I would love to check it out.

It's absolutely ridiculous how good you are.
It's a Tama Warlord Bubinga snare. It does sound incredible. The bubinga responds very well to being hit really hard:)
Matt Garstka 13x7 ??
I always come back to watch this and laugh soooo ducking hard!!!
His timing is just perfect.
Displacements are so fun to mess with! And Garstka's a beast at them!
The two black guys just love you! And I do too!

Listening to you play reminds me of how my brain feels when I'm working on physics - I
those two guys are literally my reaction every time i watch a matt garstka video
lmao there needs to be an ongoing special: Matt Gartska plays drums in front of back people

Coming back after seeing them live on the Parrhesia tour this is proof that longer hair has given Matt more power
I'd agree its easier to UNDERSTAND than it seems, but the tricky part is coming back on the one which Matt does perfectly.
Holy shit, I'm surprised I never heard of you before AAL announced your clinics. This is amazing!
Can't wait to see you play in person man! Was totally surprised you are making it all the way down to Wellington NZ with AAL, it's going to be sick!
matt your the man! and i want you to know that second 8th notes displacement is rather difficult and your just a beast and you make it sound like somethin special!
MAN. I really WISH I could get lesson's from you. You are a huge inspiration to my playing these day's. Thank you.
Matt Gartska is a robot that has been sent back in time to drum our faces off.
Matt your ridiculous... I don't know what else to say... just.. simply great
Love this Concept.
I just noticed this is 3 years old though
David Jett Before AAL
I saw your comment and i was like "nah 3 years duration seems normal to me" then i saw your comment was from 2 years ago... damn it.
same
9 years O_O
Matt Garstka is my modern day hero...
Thanks again a bunch for doing my bday clinic....wanna do a part two to this...

Super tight analogy about the scale

What about now? Hahahah
@@kirjian beat me to it lmao
I think that's probably one of the best snares i've ever heard. Matt, can you tell me about it?
Dude was definitely invited to the cookout
I wish you could show me a great hand/finger/grip technique to improve my double strokes. You are so great with these things, man. Very good!!!!!!
awesomeness thanks for the help!!!!!!!
Sounds kind of like the idea of "phasing" that's found in some of steve reich's music, such as "clapping music" or "piano phase".
So here's the thing...when he plays from 0:57 to 1:35, all you need is some trippy ass synth groove and you have some sick electro/atmospheric music. Anyone else agree?
skolarreeeweeee yeah i agree
Absoloutley Amazing !
2:30-2:48 unreal.
Congrats on joining Animals As Leaders. You're great.

The guy directly to his left looks just like Eric Moore.
Well I have just discovered yet another weakness in my playing, great video :-)
