Omg luv this raw footage...David Ruffin David Ruffin that voice...luv it...these guys were GREaT never will be another group like this one ...luv them all
Visited the Motown Museum today. I actually stood in the same place, under the same mic David Ruffin is singing into in this clip. As the Tempts are my favs it was quite emotional 4 me. The reason is my late sister dated Melvin in the late fifties/early 60's. He came over to our apt when I was about 5 or 6. The only thing I remember was looking up at him and saying 'he' too tall for me' which caused some laughter. Years later I was looking thru' my sister's photo album (she had a singing group called The Desires) and saw an autographed picture of the Tempts. I asked her which one of them did I meet. She pointed to Melvin who was sitting in the middle. This picture was when Elbridge Bryant was still with them before D Ruffin replaced him. 2nd Temptation story. The day I met David Ruffin! Well, kinda; sorta. Indirectly? Ok, so I didn't meet him at all. Anyway, in 1970 I lived on East Grand Blvd which was next door to the Wright Mutual Insurance Co. and as of today both bldgs were combined to create The Black Family Development, Inc. My friend had a paper route just across Woodward Av. His route extended all the way to the Lodge Freeway. We were both 16 at the time. One day I was with him while he was either delivering papers or collecting the money for them. We ended up at this small apt which I think it was at the end of Delaware St. or some other side street. While we were standing in the hallway I looked at one of the mail boxes and in the name plate slot I saw the name "David Ruffin!" Man were we excited. I can't remember who, but one of us wanted to dig the name out. So either my friend talked me out of it or vice versa. We figured the landlord just didn't want to remove it; or was he actually living there? That I do not know. Strange our lives. I can't remember where I was or what I was doing two wks ago yet I remember this time like it happened yesterday.
I can't help but envy you because you got to meet Melvin Franklin and I severely wish I could meet him on an daily basis now that I know he existed but I can't. So I consider you lucky, legitimately. I would love to meet him.
In the 60s I went to see my mate a tailor working in Carnaby street, It was a bloke there my mate just did some pants for him n he was kind of doing his moves in front of the mirror so i gathered he was some kind of singer, after a while we my maye's boss sad to me put the kettle o mate n ask who wants a cup, i asked the bloke doing his moves n then he said what music u like said the R Stones the Who he said don't u like black music said of course i do told him Ray Charles n the Temptations, then he said to me my brother used to sing with them but after he left they r not as good he told e his name was Jimmy Ruffin n is getting ready as he be on Top of the Pops said to him well good luck mate he snapped back at me I need no luck i got talent, then I thought maybe the Temptations kicked your brother out if he got an attitude like yours he was an ok singer but he was Never a Wilson Picket George Benson or others
So much talent in that small studio, it's incredible! I often wonder if they realized that their work would be so iconic and survive through generations?
Also, nobody ever mentions Bobbye Lee. She's the conga player that you see. She is also a Funk "Sister", but there was no mention of her in the movie. She played on many Motown hits in the Detroit era. In fact she still plays!
I'm so glad that you clarified that because I was wondering who that was and why Eddie bongo Brown was missing from this session. Thanks I will definitely Google her.👍
Thanks for more information. There will always be info left out in interview s, books movies and t v. I wish the mini series was longer how did Melvin die. Why he is the only one mentioned to keep the group together why was Paul's image only about him drinking he was I'll he had a few lady friends. We only here from Otis and Manager Shelly's eyes . Here's a fact u. The movie David did not say "ain't Nobody Coming to See You Otis" that famous was made up by"Leon" .
All the legends in there. Lamont, Brian , Eddie..Smokey...Paul Riser....The Temps , Bobbye Hall....Joe Messina, Earl Van Dyke.. Russ Terrana...James Jamerson.......Incredible!
Hi edagdwg thanks for sharing this history of respect for yourself and others God bless all the people that came from motown's studios still love them history of respect for yourself as a child of God singing the best music ever linda j peace ❤️💯🦋🦋🦋
One of the most important places in music history, Motown Studios. I would love to visit. So cool seeing the Funk Brothers doing what they do best, and even seeing Jamerson in the far right corner.
This is gold. I love the Temptations... especially this particular line up. There is footage of the Supremes recording in Studio A as well - a track called “Mother You, Smother You”.
‘Of course, squeezing everyone into the tiny studio is only being done for show - by 1967, the musicians, the background singers, and he lead singer (Ruffin in this case) would be recording their tracks separately, and typically the vocals were done several days/weeks/months after the music backing track was cut.
Exactly. By mid '60s, they were also able to overdub vocals by then. By the time of "My Girl", session, in 1964, they were able to add the sweetening instrumentals, i.e. string section, separately. Check It Out! Ciao!!!
Thank you!!! At least we have one real recording session here!! Like the song.. David reminds me of Levi Stubbs of the 4 Tops here!! Rolling Stone Magazine claims he is one of the top 100 singers of all time. Excellent aew!!!
Beautiful song...and check out The Funk Brothers WITH James Jamerson on Bass in the back there @1:43. I wish there was more footage like this...just pure music from the heart in intimate surroundings of "The Snake Pit".
Wow ! It's great that this has gotten so many views ! Thank u all ! Glad u enjoyed watching this ! David was an amazing singer ! I know all of u know that ! I love Paul Williams too ! James Jamerson is truly a legend !
awesome where can i get hold of this dvd i grew up listening to motown and the tempts where my faves and still are today david ruffin possesed the most soulfull voice ive ever heard please whats the name of this dvd and thanks a million for sharing this jem
@@gaylebellaire5830 Yes he did I think all of em got they teeth fixed once they became famous in some of his later video when look like he had a partial missing David I'm talking about on the side he still looked sexy! view the last tape of him, Eddie and Dennis, Enjoy
With Otis being the last real member of the Temptations, I bet he knows for sure that Genna Sapia is lying just to get recognized and money. JUSTICE FOR DAVID RUFFIN!!! 💯❤️
This special CBS television segment was filmed before the release of their "Mellow Mood" album, because a photo from this segment is featured on the back of that album/ CD. It looks like the part where the producer interrupts the take. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
@mactherealestateman. Thx for the info. Nobody mentions because men in power with no ears and music harmonic perception nor appreciation happen to be calling the shots. The sound of those congas IS THE SONG.How dare they forget her!
I believe that's Earl Van Dyke playing the piano. I never even picked that up, but now that you mentioned it, he does look a bit like [The Office] Stanley.
That is huge... would u be Jimmy's son/daughter? I don't mean to pry, but I'm a fan of the Temps from the time this treasure of a video was filmed.... would love to know how it was for you growing up with this legacy. Also, thrilling to see the Funk Bros. here.
at 0.30 in the video who are the two dudes at the mixing desk the guy in the shades (cool) looks like norman whitfield but not sure about the guy in the cans
Norman Whitfield isn't present because he's not the producer of this song - Ivy Jo Hunter (giving the countoff) is. The Holland brothers and Lamont Dozier had management positions at Motown by this time, which is why they've squeezed themselves & the musicians into Studio A all at once for this staged performance for the news.
Just on this upload it's off synch. Watch the whole video on the Temptations Definitive Petformances 1964-'73 DVD. This was filmed live for a CBS special segment. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
David Ruffin has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.

The amazing David Ruffin, nothing more need to be said
I stood right under that coat hook behind where David Ruffin is singing, when we visited Hitsville recently :) :) :)
I have this album. The oldest that my mother had. "I wish it would rain".
This on the; "With a lot o' Soul album". The; "I wish it would rain", was 2 albums later, after; "In a Mellow Mood" album.
Haha. They all have on their suits 'cause they knew it'd be filmed! They LOOK GOOD :) I love David!

Look at James Jamerson at 1:41 on the right! One of my biggest bass heroes!
Keep filming! Thanks G.C.
@WWAHP Jack Ashford. He did all of the tambourine work and vibes work. He was an un-official conductor for thr funk brothers.
