There was more talent in that tiny room than we now have in all of pop music, i feel very fortunate to have lived my youth during those years.

David Ruffin and James Jamerson in the same room. That is a talent tsunami. As a pretty decent bass player, but someone with no singing ability whatsoever, I'm in awe of those two dudes.

emember me the one who heard your cries
And reached out and dried your eyes
Remember me the one who found you and wrapped all my love around you
When you were all alone and all your dreams were gone
When you were nothing but a tear stained face I took you in
Know your broken wing has mended and your need for me has ended
Know you say you must be free
You wanna fly away from me
You were lost in yesterday I gave you my tomorrow
Know your leaving me in sorrow and you telling me: "im sorry" but baby
Sorry is a sorry word after all I've done for you
Sorry is a sorry word when I need a love that's true
Out of sympathy and all you feel for me
After all the sweet love I've given you (given you baby)
Girl you walk away with the best of me
The love I gave to you, you given to someone new
And sorry won't ease this misery
Remember me who took the hand, held it up to make a stand
Remember me the one who's love has shared, with one who really cares
Now you've turned away from me and say that you sorry
That it had to be baby sorry it had to be that way
Sorry is a sorry word after all I've done for you
Sorry is a sorry word when I need a love that's true
Sorry is a sorry word when I need a love that's true

The Temptations + The Funk Brothers. David Ruffin, very soulful voice. The Funk Brothers members here, include bandleader and keyboardist Earl Van Dyke (far right), guitarists Robert White, Joe Messina and Eddie Willis (right to left) bassist James Jamerson (right rear), drummer Benny Benjamin (off camera) and percussionist Bobbye Hall (behind The Temptations; I sometimes refer to Bobbye Hall as "The Funk Sister", as she began her career as an unofficial late-era member of The Funk Brothers, and was essentially their only female member, before the peak of her career, when she played with such acts as Bill Withers, Bob Dylan, Carole King, James Taylor, and Stevie Nicks). On the released version (first released in mono as the b-side of "All I Need", both songs were later released in stereo on the album "The Temptations With A Lot O' Soul") strings, brass and woodwinds are audible (orchestral arrangements at the time were typically arranged/conducted by Paul Riser), as is a tambourine (presumably Jack Ashford). Not taking away from The Temptations (or any of the Motown artists/groups) but it wasn't the Motown artist/groups themselves who created the legendary "Motown sound", it was "The Funk Brothers", who were of course, the label's studio musicians. Even after the documentary "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown", I feel that The Funk Brothers are still not getting the recognition that they deserve.

Although this was indeed a staged promotional video and not the actual recording we heard as the flip side to "All I Need", I tend to believe that the Temptations are actually singing live on this promotional video and even possibly the band may be live. There's just something about it being an unprocessed sound and mix. Those vocals sound (in a good way) very raw.

@@ambidextra_ambidextra ...It was a 45 RPM single. "Sorry is a Sorry Word" was the B-side of "All I Need" (Gordy 7061). The former was also taken from The Temptations' classic LP entitled THE TEMPTATIONS WITH A LOT O' SOUL, which was released in mono (Gordy GLP-922) and stereo (Gordy GLPS-922) on July 17th, 1967. The classic 45 RPM single was released on April 13th, 1967.

Great video. Brian Holland was such a ham though. He doesn't know what he's talking about. He wasn't even the producer of this song, Ivy Hunter, the man counting the band back in, was the writer/producer for this session. It look like it was a show for the cameras.

I was hoping to see a black engineer. After Zimbabwe became an independent country, the top executive positions at the government broadcasting station were given to blacks, but the whites were still having to do the technical jobs. We need to get more blacks interested in science and engineering, put away that stupid basketball. People have been saying this for at least the past 50 years.
