The new found success went to Ruffin’s head… big time… he was trippin’, arrogance suffocated his relationships with his group members and it went downhill for him since then. I’ll always be a David Ruffin and Temptations fan. But it was what it was, and it happened to plenty of other groups.

David Ruffin is originally from Whynot, Mississippi, 15 miles southeast of Meridian. He was raised by his father. His mother died when he was a kid. He joined The Temptations as a lead singer who sang lead on such famous songs as "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." He became addicted to cocaine and began missing rehearsals and performances. He also had a huge ego problem with didn’t sit well with the group. He was replaced by Dennis Edwards. He was a solo artist as well. He had some hits during the 70s while he was still at Motown. He definitely didn’t like Otis Williams because of his jealousy towards him. He and Eddie Kendricks were good friends for real. He was a living legend. He died from an accidental overdose of crack cocaine. R.I.P. David Ruffin!!!

I don't think it was all Otis Williams maybe 20% but not all David ruffin had a lot of unresolved issues that being the drugs and alcohol and anger with him wishing he had both parents in his life and his mother passing away early in his life and his father left to raise them and he did it with a iron fist and they were poor and him learning to be a man from being in the streets which he believed hitting women was ok because that's what he seen other men doing and his relentless drive to become a singer and the shady music business him not getting what he felt he deserved and him becoming hard to deal with when he became famous missing show's and rehearsals do to his heavy drug and alcohol addiction he had a lot of problems he was trying to fight on his own he was like a lot of people who had issues he chose to deal with on his own outside of this he was a good guy just lost with no guidance or help and he took these issues out on the women he delt with he was married to Sandra and they had 3 daughter's he never married Tammie tarell or his son's mother he was just a very lost and confused man but he was one of the best singers to ever hold a microphone hands down and that can never be taken from him! David didn’t hate Otis nor any of them. He just knew Otis wasn’t about to have the group sit around and tolerate his mess from the drugs, ego, and missed rehearsals. Years later David admitted to Otis that he did right thing by keeping the group disciplined like it was. Otis lead off stage and David only wanted to lead on stage. So they were always bound to bump heads. No matter what they all went through the classic 5 era will always be legends💯

David Ruffin was the front man - think of Diana Ross, Cher, Lionel Ritchie, Tina Turner and countless more who thought they WERE above the group and left for solo careers. David never wanted to leave the Temps.....he had issues and wanted to be the top guy, maybe not desirable but natural given his background. Otis was not going to let that happen. And also, like my fellow posters here, David was not married to Tammi and they only went together for a short time.....it was James Brown who abused and destroyed her.
The temptations were absolutely great. They came alone in a time When black america needed heroes the temptations were there Don't with their beautiful music to ease the burden of racism at The time.

I recall the SUMMER OF SOUL Concerts in the Summer of 1969. It was held at Mount Morris Park in Harlem. I was there with friends just about every weekend with some of my friends. We saw Gladys Knight and the Pips, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Mann, Olatungi African Dance Troupe, Sly and the Family Stone and David Ruffin. David's performance was great, yet most of the people in the audience Booed him off the stage. I felt bad for him. He was booed, because there was a rumor that he smashed his then wife, Tammi Terrell, upside her head with a hammer, which later caused her death. Years later, it was revealed that the rumor was bulls..t! Tammi died from a brain hemmorage after it was revealed that she had a tumor in her head for years. I learned a valuable lesson from that. Always get the facts before formulating an opinion about someone, rather than listening to rumors and jumping to conclusions. R.I.P.❤ DAVID

Otis Williams has a GREAT ear for assembling talent with harmonic and melodic consistency. He would have been very successful had he chose just to manage the group. Quite frankly he was the least talented of them all and without his presence as a "Temptation" they wouldn't have missed a beat and he was the EASIEST to replace....and that's reality.

It would be extremely difficult to love, or just get along with an addict that came from povety to international fame and relative wealth, that also came along with a massive ego, that needed constant approval and attention. The Temptations were a ( Business), Otis clearly inner-stood and design the brand for success, and the conflict with David was damaging the brand for the entire group, unfortunately he had to go.

He wasn’t the “least talented” member. What Otis brought to the Temps was irreplaceable. Any great group can find a good singer…especially in Detroit during that period. Otis was a natural alpha male leader, a great talent scout, and someone with a head for business. Every great group needs a guy like that. Groups that don’t have an Otis at the helm fail disastrously. Check Sly & the Family Stone or the Dramatics for proof of that kinda shit. Without Otis, the Temptations wouldn’t have lasted beyond 1970…if that.

Eddie sang lead just as much as David, and esp on albums prior to their 1967 Temptations With A Lot O' Soul album. David lead sang on their biggest hits beginning with It's Growing and My Girl and got more lead roles when Norman Whifield took over the writing and producing for the group on their last two classic 5 albums--Temptations With A Lot O Soul and I Wish It Would Rain. @@jimibeamon7316 it's CLEARLY, based on your response, that The Primes ( Eddie and Paul) was the beginning missing ingredient that actually completed the Temptations, after Otis BEGGED them to join him, they( the Primes was about to form their OWN group. to which David were going to be a part of. So truth be TOLD if it wasn't for The Primes and David, there wouldn't have BEEN no Temptations. Otis will be a Distant or two away in SEARCH for a Prime +1. In REALITY, no one REALLY should have a credit in being a founder, Otis jump started THAT lie a wrote a book with writer Patricia Romanoski based on HIS version behind the discovery, which went on to be made into a made for TV movie.
