I feel bad for you but at the same time I kind of understand you. I can't have dairy and avoid gluten because of a chronic skin disease. So I kind of got used to just watching people eating stuff that I can't have. Like you said it's better to avoid it than dealing with the problems.

As for what snack ... Well it's difficult as what defines a "Japanese" snack ... Is it a snack you have which is consistent with normal expectations of Japanese ingredients or is it a snack which you have in Japan ... I could say my favourite snack in Japan is the individual slices of cake you get, wonderfully packaged, from the department store food halls as I always enjoy the experience of getting it and eating it ... But that's more french style cake made in Japan rather than Japanese snacks. I could say pudding .. aka creme caramel as that always good from the combini ... but again ...
I gonna go with something simple .. a nice bit of matcha ice-cream, maybe with a bit of gold leaf (last one I had was in Kanazawa).

I've seen that soybean powder stuff in Sharla's videos too...for some reason I always think it's mushroom flavor (cause the name sounds like the Japanese word for mushroom, kinoko).

Aww this made me miss Japanese snacks a lot! I love Umaibo so much, but it’s really difficult to get your hands on it where i live (and if you do find them they‘re super expensive lol). Was great to see Alexander again and meet Jesse!

I dont have serious food allergies but I'm have pretty significant intolerance to garlic, onions, pork, and dairy, and i get minor allergic reactions to olives (olive oil) and avocado, but even that drives me crazy sometimes, so I really feel for Jesse in this.
On a more positive note, a lot of the stuff in this sounded super delicious! Yuzu is definitely one of my favorite fruits.

It is nice to see Alexander again. I once had a yuzu tart in a restaurant which was really yummy and I tried some cheese flavoured Uracara corn which was sweeter than i was expecting but still yum.

That little bit about Yuzu was interesting, I never knew that it was the name of a citrus fruit. Interestingly enough one of my favorite Manga/ anime is called Citrus and the main characters name is Yuzu. You learn something new everyday.

I've never ordered a Bokksu cause there's so much in them it seems like too much for mostly just me, but I have ordered some individual items from their site. Those handmade candies are soo good and they have a lot of flavors that change with the season. Jesse should def get some more sometime :)
I just started this video but I'm already feeling ALL THE WAY for jesse! I too am "allergic against the world" (as norm so nicely put it) but usually Asian Cousine n snacks are the least complicated n dangerous things :")
(At least as long as they're made from rice or tapioca etc)

Poor Jesse! He only got 1 thing out of that box! All the "Sorry Jesse" text pop-ups did make me giggle a little bit though! It sucks having that many food allergies. Most of the snacks sound really good though! And I love mochi! I order it online to eat it here.

I dunno. I like Shisho, it's a bit "peppery" but like cilantro if you've never had it. They make a thing you put on rice with it in, really zings up the rice.
Is Boksu just a Japanese way to say box? There were a lot of interesting snakes in the really cool, also do they ship in Japan too? As it would be great for someone new in Japan to try before buying in the shop :D

It's ok Jesse. I'm vegan, so I know the feels. I went to a work Xmas party on the weekend, and even though the caterers had been informed that there were a few vegans there, all they prepared that we could eat was pumpkin and cauliflower 😂
Being vegan isnt the problem, if i wasnt allergic to all the veggies required for vegan meals lol my choices would be endless, they just werent educated caterers and they wanted to offer a vegan option, sad or not lol.
Oh I just more meant I feel your pain in regards to being limited to foods. Milk is in goddamn everything 😒 I can probably eat almost nothing in Japan as far as snack foods go. America is worse haha

Last time I was in Kyoto we stayed in a ryokan, and every afternoon when we got back to our room after exploring, there was always fresh hot water with tea supplies, and some kind of dagashi for us to try, it was so lovely. I cannot express how sweet the hospitality of the owners/managers of accommodation is in Japan
I think the only times I've unboxed boxes of snacks has been when I ordered a bunch of snacks...which happened a lot in college.
Though, the vegetarian box would be nice. Every time I get ads for japanese snack boxes, it's like 90% of what's inside has animal fat, somesuch other form of meat, or gelatin, which sucks. I mean, I'm also lactose intolerant but that's not usually so much of an issue (ironic, considering the hell it put me through today). Skyr and goat cheese are my friends though. They would never betray me like this. I guess the upside is that I've gotten really good at reading ingredient lists.

As a fellow from Ontario, I find it funnier to tell Americans that we have to buy our beer from a government Beer Store or a Liquor Control Board of Ontario building, then us having bagged milk.

My allergies aren't as bad however. I'm very sensitive to gluten, but can handle a small coin sized piece of cake or such every so often, and some cross contamination.
I'm looking forward to the next video! Hopefully I can make a list of snacks to buy if I get a chance to visit again~

Feeling Jesse's pain... I'm allergic to milk and potato, which is super limiting when it comes to snacks! I had to cancel my Taste Japan box because I ended up passing everything on to my kids since I couldn't eat any of it.
I have Crohn's as well but I got lucky and it went dormant. I still can't eat meat and dairy though and have to be careful of ingredients. I am so sorry he has celiac as well. That really sucks. One of the things they tell you with IBD,IBS and Crohn's is fibre fibre fibre ! if I eat bread it has to be whole wheat! Poor guy! *hugs Jesse*
Poor Jesse but I know how hard allergies can be. My ex was allergic to almost just as much as Jesse so it was a pain going out to eat. Nothing too severe but we still tried to stay away from her allergens

Two observations:
One: Norm's family is required by law to wear beards. This is a little hard on the female members of the family.
Two: Jesse seems to be very used to being gently trolled by his brothers (6:47 "They're really good! They've got like this cinnamon in it. Do you want to smell it?")
11:30 Turns out Norm is a nice brother after all (but he still couldn't resist a little trolling--"We'll have to do it another day!")
