A pioneer in digital filmmaking, Van Neistat made his first internet video, The Holland Tunnel, in 2000. He went on to collaborate with New York City artist Tom Sachs, directing a series of short films shown at the Guggenheim Museum in Berlin. Van has since directed dozens more films for the Tom Sachs Studio. In 2010 HBO aired The Neistat Brothers, an 8-episode series of short videos made entirely by Van and his brother Casey Neistat. Van Neistat’s directorial debut feature, A SPACE PROGRAM, co-written by Tom Sachs, premiered at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival and opened in theaters nation-wide in spring, 2016. All you need to do for iPhone camera is swipe left from the Home Screen and that’ll bring up the camera. In the settings you can have it hold last used recording settings.

Van, you can change the default recording settings on iPhone to 4K rather than HD. Also, just hit the camera button on the lower left of the Lock Screen to go right to the camera
I agree with your brother about phones being the best cameras. Because we always have it and they’re getting better every year. If you took the time to see how simple all the issues you had with the iPhone, are easy to solve.

iPhone, you set setting permanently. To use, swipe left or hold camera icon from Lock Screen. From screen off to shooting in ~2 seconds.
not sure if someone else has mentioned this but if you
1. Open settings on your phone
2. Swipe down with your finger to reveal a search bar
3. Type in "camera"
4. There, you should find a whole bunch of options for changing the phones default camera settings(you can even tell it to to launch with the video option selected)
Also the shortcut to access the camera is to swipe from right to left on the lock screen, you can also hold down the camera icon (you'll get feedback in the form of a quick buzz; that's how you'll know when to let go of the button).

I appreciate that your criteria for a good camera are all about function as opposed to technical specs that, despite being meaningful to few, dominate most online reviews.
For iPhone there’s a setting for it to remember the last mode, eg if you were last on video, then it goes back to video, also just swipe from right side to left to not unlock to get camera. Also I own two different Kubrick cameras, the Arriflex and a Neuman Sinclair which he used for the death POV in Clockwork Orange because it was indestructible.
Also, Insta360 has the 4K option and, if you want, you can shoot on Leica’s lens 1 inch..

Great image stabilisation, agree. But why does the video quality look even worse then the previous versions?? Always something with the most expensivest little camera on the planet.
As a cyclist, I just saw you do something that many parents do; Put your very young kid on your bike as you ride. SERIOUS problem - kid wearing helmet = Good. You NOT wearing helmet = VERY bad. Why? 2 reasons; 1) Sends message to kid that when they reach certain age, it will be ok to ditch the helmet. 2) More importantly (God forbid) if you crash/fall, etc and smash your head (and...providing some miracle the kid doesn't suffer injuries) unable to respond. Is the kid able to call (911 maybe) for help? Maybe this is just an oversight on your part. I can tell by watching your videos, you always try to do the right thing and are concerned with safety. So, I hope you'll understand where I'm coming from.
That being said...your videos are always great and I enjoy them. I'm an Osmo Action guy but after seeing this video, I will take a closer look at the GP 10. Thanks, again and safe(ty) travels.

Just an iPhone tip. You can set the 4K 24 as default in Settings > Camera. Thanks for yet a great video 👍🏼
And having changed the default video res, on his iPhone you can see the camera icon right on the lock screen. Hold (or 3D press with extra pressure) for less than a second and it'll open right up. Can also probably swipe left from right edge of lock screen to get straight into it. Or swipe down from upper right corner to get to settings, then tap on camera icon and select action.
On my S21 Ultra, it's two taps of the power, swipe to video, hit record. From off to recording in under 3 seconds. I use this (or to take photos) all the time.

Van, you crack me up. Where have you been all these years while Casey was making it big on UA-cam ? You could have been just as big or even bigger. You do and say things that are completely par for someone with great wit and fortitude. Please don't quit like your brother did. Lot's of reports of GoPro Hero 10's overheating after 10-15min of use, they know about it but don't seem to care.

You can set up your iPhone with a double tab to the back or a triple tap to the back to start shooting in less than secs !!! Ask me how and i will show you . Or you can just flip the screen to the leftwhen you just power it on. or when its in lock mode . 1 sec bam , you are filming . You too 24 secs!!!

I've already bought a Pentel P209 based on Van's love for it. (I never knew about thicker lead mechanical pencils until Van mentioned it.) I bought a Canon S110 pocket camera based on Casey's love for it 5 years ago. Now, I guess a GoPro 10 is on my shopping list. I don't respond well to "ads", but when an authentic person raves about a product with no ulterior motives, that is the product I choose. It has served me well. I like good products, not good ad campaigns.

With face recognition I can do it with one touch. A second tap starts recording, and all in about 2 seconds. Presumably every modern iPhone user knows this, but only if they "only" use it as a camera.
So yeah we get Van's point about dedicated hardware having value, but a few seconds of _planning to use the iPhone_ can easily overcome the limitation demonstrated in the video. Bonus points were awarded for not seeing the dedicated camera button on the Home screen. :)

Correct, go into camera settings and set it to keep the camera mode (you stay on video, or cinematic if using a 13 and want that) and it keeps the video settings.
Then raise your iPhone swipe left and press volume up to start recording, takes about 2 seconds.
The image stabilisation on the GoPro is amazing though so I would keep that as your go to.
Looked for this comment - I can begin using my iPhone camera in less than a second with a single swipe left from the lock-screen; it is the fastest and most convenient of any camera I have.

Yeah, he didn’t know the right way to shot on iPhone. It is not so hard to use.
“Preserve settings” is what to search in the setting app. Can preserve video format and/or photo vs video at startup. Also: backtap can’t instantly launch the camera from the lock screen or Home Screen.

Step 2: smash camera into paddle boat.
Step 3: begin review.
Step 4: sell 1 million go-pro 10's.

That was amazing! The canon SD870 is the only video camera I ever owned before a gopro and then eventually started working for gopro from there. Been at gopro 11 years 👌🏻 thanks for this awesome story.
Stabilization is insane. I was going to buy myself an cheapo 4k action cam, but the stabilization on this makes me want to get the GoPro. That is insanely stable
Stabilization on the Hero 10 is really phenomenal. It's a great camera to record with while walking around and vlogging. Great for vacation and travel shots when you don't want to have a big DSLR with you too.
I think you could definitely have your iPhone camera ready in less than a second with a few tricks. First, don’t unlock the phone, just swipe to the right of the locked screen (and btw your faceID might have a problem if it never works, I would advise bringing it to an apple store). Then, in the settings, you can make it so that you don’t have to reconfigure the camera every time by changing default resolution and frame rate as well as activating the option to remember last camera mode used. Hope this helps, sorry if a thousand people already explained this (and sorry for bad English, hi from Belgium!).
I don't need it, I can't justify it, I still have a Hero 5 black that works great... Still want one. That stabilization was amazing.

I've watched probably over 10 videos about the new GoPro HERO 10 already. Some were informative, some were epic, some were funny. But this one was different. I can't put my finger on why, but this was by far my favourite. Thanks Van.
Hi Van. You don’t need to unlock the iPhone to use the camera. Just click the camera icon on the unlock screen. Bottom right corner. It’s right there in your video at 1:34 😊 Takes about 1 second.
You can even set the camera to open in the last used settings. The camera is then always in video mode. In camera settings you can also save that video mode should always be 4k 24 frames.
Yeah, so bizzare. The iphone is one of the easiest cameras to open and start rolling!

My Sony takes 5 seconds to turn on and record. Okay for a studio setting. But it's horrible for trying to capture life.

Van, you can swipe left from locked screen and be straight in 4K video. You just choose remember last camera settings from the setting menu and be on 4K video. Then you go straight from the pocket raise, left swipe and use the volume button to shoot. It took me 1second to start shooting 4K video. That's much faster than the GoPro.

I have an old Google Phone Pixel 2, can shoot in 4k. And most important, camera is quick to use: Double hit the power button and bam! You are in photo/video mode (shooting only). You can shoot, but you can not access anything else on the phone. The best part (for me) is the fact that google give you UNLIMITED automatic cloud storage for everything you shoot with that specific phone.

Does your GoPro stop turning on and simultaneously recording after doing it several times? Mine does, it’s my only complaint.
I get that this is a GoPro sponsored video, but claiming to not be smart enough to pick phone up, swipe from right to left on Lock Screen and hit the record button all in 3 seconds on an iPhone is kind of assuming the viewers are idiots.
If you can’t indefinitely borrow something from your brother without telling him, you need to work on your relationship.
