Thoughts on architecture's disrespect for the potential beauty of plumbing.
Essentially, this video is a big complaint that typical residential plumbing, probably 99% of residential plumbing, is designed such that it's built into walls and floors that must be destroyed in order to maintain or repair the plumbing. I understand that there are reasons plumbing is typically installed behind walls and under floors. Gotta keep pipes from freezing; it's cheaper to destroy a sheetrock wall than to fundamentally redesign plumbing conventions to allow ready access to pipes; plumbing is relatively low maintenance, and to build access to pipes is way less cost-effective than to demolish walls and floors when needed. Also, I imagine, there's building codes that require specific plumbing conventions.
But we've had a bunch of plumbing emergencies at this house, and each time we do, it seems the heavy-lift of the repair is the inaccessibility of the pipes. On one occasion, the plumbers had to bring in a skinny 16 year-old nephew in order to fit beneath the house to access some pipes.
I do not accept that there is NO WAY to design plumbing differently from its current incarnation, as this video demonstrates. I first saw the Pompidou Center in Paris when I was 21, and it's had a lasting effect on me.
The drone rescue is in here because drone rescue videos are a bit of a cliche now, so i didn't want to make a stand-alone drone rescue video, AND I found those tree guys so incredible that i couldn't resist. I wanted you to witness how they work. You should see them with chainsaws...

*THIS Spirited Man sees a Van video and stops whatever he's doing... Van never disappoints.*
LOL Same here this SPIRITED man agrees with you.
This Spirited Man does the same.
Indeed
I have to sit down and watch intently with headphones. I often kind of half way watch videos in the background as I’m doing things, but not Vans. No way.
As someone who lives in Sweden, I can’t help but be concerned about water getting into the house and moisture building up… but then again, it’s southern california, so what do I know
The foundation seems to be somewhat ventilated so I wouldn't worry too much. But Americans usually don't cover the subfloor with wind protection plates or anything so I don't know. I live in Finland so it also looks slightly concerning to me :D
In Florida, the same. Super-high humidity (narrow peninsula) & tons of rain. But Van basically lives in a high-elevation desert where the laws of mold & mildew (as I know them) are probably different??? I 'dunno'.
This is what I was thinking. But your right, he lives in southern California so I don't think it even rains often.
the big stones first in the hole, prevent unwanted rodents from digging in.
As long as you are ok with water getting under the house
DEAR VAN NEISTAT: You make some of the most artistic videos I have ever come across. As a learning youtube, I learn so much from you. KEEP UP.
What did you learn in this video 📹
@@AskAW I tried learning from his pacing of the Video for youtube standards this is considered a slow really slow pace. Somehow he keeps you interested and moving.
KEEEEEEP UUUUUUUP BUB YOUR A ROCKSTAR

This video talks about the external plumbing building… it also explains the importance of air flows through buildings . Would recommend
@@tapewormcorp1 That was a great recommendation, by the way. Informative and interesting video.
As someone who fixes things for a living (auto mechanic), I've always dreamed that when I build my own house someday I'll construct all the plumbing and wiring in such a way as to make it easily accessible for maintenance and repairs. No busting through sheetrock and concrete to get to what would otherwise be a simple repair, but rather some neatly organized system of removable panels and access ports so I can easily do my own maintenance in less time and with less hassle.
The dream for many of us
The mushrooms growing on that stump are called chicken of the woods. The are gourmet edible and rare!
its a beautiful one too. i can never find any that healthy looking in PA
@@Benry1 plenty here in northern baltimore if you want to hunt them.
@@Benry1 Keep looking! I've found trees covered with them.
They arnt very rare at all if you know how to look
I find it incredible how much you make me want to be a better human being, even with a video on something as simple as plumbing.
💯 same here! We gotta be grateful for this dude!
this type of functional elegance is why i love Van so much
Never tought I'll see a 8min video about plumbing, UNTIL NOW!
I spent the whole video wondering what was up with the tree at the beginning... I’m so glad you got back to it at the end!!!
I thought he was going to make a custom concrete molded paver that was removable, and sat in some kind of rubber gasket. I am not sure this will keep water out of the home.
That will be the upgrade...
Dirt, sand and a paver are the solution I would have opted for. The plumbing is still quite accessible, but keeps water from collecting under the house and could closer match the existing brick work. Van chose the 'feature it' option. Over time, that wood is going to rot I'm afraid.
Van you have one of the most creative spirits! WOW!
Amazing video yet again.
As an HVAC business owner and creater/fixer.... this kind of solution is brilliantly simple.
Gets the job done without engineers and thousands of wasted dollars on consultants and more.
Thank you for your channel and content.❤
You have appreciate back flow preventers, that’s disturbingly impressive.
I noticed that
Amen. Van is the man. Keep being awesome!
If I had a ton more cash I would come and buy that Burden studio for you. For real.
Love the artistic way in solving the problem.
Elegant solution. Now many things I have seen on Casey’s channel suddenly make sense.
Rescuing a drone? Hmm, I think I’ve seen a Neistat do that before.
Hahahahaha
omg memories !
The difference is that this Neistat rescues it, the other one puts it with the rest of the crashed collection.
Interesting Idea, however you'll want to create an access panel that has both a vapor barrier and high R value. I recommend wrapping some vapor barrier or liquid flashing around 2 layers of polyiso and plugging the hole with that instead. With your solution you'll have water, insects and small critters like mice passing back and forth. While in a dry hot area like your house is this might work against fungal buildup, but in somewhere humid like the south this would cause a vaccum evacuation of the hot air through your ceiling if there were any leaks. Also the hot humid air would find a cold surface in your crawl space creating condensation and lead to fungal growth or other issues.
It is fantastic to start morning with your video. Inspiring. Thanks Van
I love Van's practical solutions.
Mate, you've got some chicken of the woods on the bottom of that tree! Those are tasty AF when baked in butter and spiced with salt and pepper!
God bless you! Honestly, that stone thingie you made to fill the hole in the brick can only be described as "love". It was like you were bouncing a blessing back onto the whole situation. This is the stuff.
I love the randomness of your videos. Thanks
My favourite creator does a video about my favourite subject! Van - you made my day!
Such a beautiful rock garden
Literally stop what I'm doing when I get the notifcation Van posted a new video.
If you just had a channel with this music and the noises of you building things that would be awesome, this is so relaxing
Noise in video I mean
An exellent work of art. Thank you Van.
Your videos make me happy Van
How is that fix going to keep the water from pooling under the house causing a mold mildew issue over time?
Water? What water? It’s SoCal. Any standing water in SoCal is done so by man so it can be used later. The rest drains into the dry sandy soil or evaporates.
if "rainy season" is more substantial than a light misting from time to time he will have a tub full of rocks and water decaying that wood frame and definitely leaking under the house. didn't see any caulking on the inside just shoved some tarp in there
@@anthonyjanairo4434 He just said rainy season was coming /shrugs
your storytelling is world class
Your perspective of us as a civilization aims at making us better people in ways I hadn’t thought about. Love that.
Oh I agree with this 100%. And pipes can be beautiful. We should embrace the beauty of these utilities
Very calming cinematography, voice over, and music by Grey Gersten at the end.
Yo, the music on this is so perfect!
The layout of this video is insaneee
Do you know I almost burst into tears at the end with the rain footage reveal. Amazing
For those who wonder this is Renzo Piano's centre Pompidou. Called Beaubourg by parisians. Museum and exhibition of modern art. Van your plumbing is beautiful.
Love your work man, So relaxing to watch, greetings from Ireland 😎
….and everything even looks nice when you’re done. What a man. ❤️
I remember when episode one he said he was only doing 6 episodes and then waiting to see what happened… thank god that didn’t happen. Keep it up Van!
Gracias Van! Me encantó este vídeo, el final es ... sin palabras...
As a plumber for an irrigation company in the Midwest seeing pipes exposed and above ground is so weird to me
This was lovely. Hats off to Grey for the beautiful music. You guys are a killer combination.
Your back yard looks fantastic!!
By far one of his best videos. Pure genius. Fantastic!
I am a plumber and pipes hidden is not what I or any plumber want to do - its the home owners. I am renovating my own house now and rerouting (slowly) all the pipework with easy access in mind. Don’t blame plumbing - it is beautiful like you mentioned - people are just tasteless and dumb they dont want to know how things function or how things are made they just want things.
Nice work Van. Another great story. I feel calmer, happier and inspired each time I watch a video of yours. Oh, and yes, tree surgeons are great, they rescued my drone too!
Rope access is always cool to watch
I find these videos so relaxing and satisfying. Thanks Van!
I just realised van’s voice kinda resembles Joaquin Phoenix ,very calm and soothing!
Simple, but stunning
This is one of my favorite videos I’ve ever seen on this platform.
WE WANT A VAN NEISTAT HOUSE TOUR
From a plumber, I love you too Van
I really enjoy your films. Please Keep it up. Thank You.!
Really love your videos. Sometimes they remind me of sonnets. Erm, where nearly at the end of the video a 'turn of thought' is revealed, like a 'volta' in a sonnet. At this video, at 07:30: the check is in the mail. Greetings from the Netherlands.
I live in a condo. Everytime a small leak occurs in the plumbing in the wall, it has to be fixed and then tradesmen charging 125$/hr have to come in to repair the drywall and insulation. A small leak is always at least a $2000 bill, especially because its a condo no one does it themselves (the board hires a contractor). There has to be a better way. Where plumbing leaks are exposed visually and do not flood walls before they are noticed, and can be repaired easily without a massive labour bill.
A plumbing chase works well for access. Many commercial buildings utilize this. if I ever build a house centrally locate fixtures put a panel or door to easily get to all plumbing.
Hey Van, greetings from Brazil, thanks for that
Great movie. Love the music at the end.
Man I love your stories. they are so trivial and yet so profound. keep it up for as long as possible!
Nice job on the fix Van. Looks great and will be easy to undo, when needed. I was going to say “should that be needed”, but we all know it’s just a matter of when, not if.
You inspire me to want to work around my house!
Beautiful, Van.
I did not know slingshots were used like this, learned something in the first 30sec. :)
Lovely to see one of my favourite content creators make a love letter video regarding my favourite and chosen profession. Not sure about your pebble and stone infill though. Looks like it’s going to let a lot of that rain you mention into the void below your house. Moisture and heat mean fungus. No one wants to live over a Fun Guy!
One if my favorite so far. Thank Van!
As a concept and as a study plumbing is one of the most intriguing research topics
thank you for putting your art out on a platform. you are so so absolutely amazingly inspiring.
For one they’re safer inside the walls.
Second- they last longer inside the walls vs the weather and outside elements beating down on them…
Most of the time copper fails is because of bad installation …
The old joke is that California has 4 seasons.. Earthquake, Fire, Flood and Drought. It doesn't rain very much, but when it does, it flash floods. My concern is not just rain into that space, but a stream of floodwater from the hillside above his house just pouring straight into that hole. If you can't pour a couple 5 gallon buckets of water onto those rocks without it ending up in your crawl space, then it's not fixed right. But it's a fantastic video. ;)
Your most beautiful work to date.
This spirited man didn’t see a “date” written on Vans pipework box creation
What is it about a Neistat video that makes it so damn compelling?
I fancy myself a relatively intelligent person, but im not on any level compared to Van. He is genius level in explanation.
He shows you, explains the effort the man should teach college level commonsense!
A renaissance man of the new millennium.
Its broken, lets fix it. From plumbing to government. That a wide area of expertise.
Genius is rare and when it shows up on your phone or tablet or computer, you should take the time to watch in awe! Love this man and his content.

This guy? A charlatan, at best. Dude fixes things badly and acts like he's the god damned Second Coming.
2:40 I know this one !
In the end you end up at the new jersey turnpike :-)
the drone did a good fight vs the branches before getting stuck in the tree.
Amazing Video just like an Artist 🎨 Well thought out and then some⚡ So glad your brother Casey sent me here Many Moons Ago!! 🤠👍
I love your channel bro, you put so much effort into it and it goes accredited for. Can definetely tell where Casey gets it from!
Such a great video Van.
Some would say it’s not fair for me to compare you to other UA-cam content makers but oh well… Here goes. In general I think your videos put most of UA-cam to shame, the finished quality and consistently good narration of your videos exhibit your great skill set, your talent, and knowing the art and craft of making a good video.
95% of UA-cam is very amateur. Thank goodness there’s someone like you doing it right. By the way this is not a compliment, it’s simply an observation so don’t let it go to your head ha ha.
The best to you & yours each morning, HM
great job, Van!
Your videos along with that music are almost hypnotic !
That chicken of the woods looks amazing .
Your voice is awesome. Great way to do a narration of a video.
Look after those trees Van. Knew it was a drone.
The Roman aqueducts in Segovia, Spain are a sight to see. The Romans were the first (I think) to create indoor plumbing. I like the reference to Noam Chomsky. I had never thought of it in that way before, but Chomsky is correct.
I think the problem is what's code or not in a particular area. Plumbing like that would not be allowed in Sweden. Outside plumbing is almost always UV-resistant plastic piping run in almost like a conduit (often buried) so that the piping can be pulled out and replaced if it's punctured or something. Copper piping cast in concrete is a very old technique
Fantastic video. One of your best (in my opinion).
"That's not a slingshot. THIS is a slingshot."
Just an absolutely beautiful video.
Van, you really show the artform of being a handyman
Amazing to watch, as always. My best wishes from Spain.
I appreciate the fact that you didn't use a click bait title like, I GOT MY DRONE STUCK IN A TREE!!! LOOK AT ME!!!! I also hate plumbing.
Absolutely AWESOME video!
To those concerned bretheren, in the California state capitol, Sacramento, it rained yesterday. It was the first rain in Sacramento in 212 days. A new record. Yes it rains in California, it rains in hard, intense, torrents. But stops pretty quickly and then is dry for ten months. Mold and mildew happen, of course, but they are not a thing. Like being concerned about hurricanes in Kansas. It IS possible...but...
Once again, a beautifully engaging film. loving your work.
This Spirited Man clicks the like button before watching the video. Then watches the video.
HEY!!! that’s what I do for a living! I’m a tree climber, that guy even has the same saddle as I do! Yeah, I hate plumbing as well, you got to give plumbers credit.
Great video, and you make an important point. iFixIt and Louis Rossmann need to bring the "Right to Repair" movement to our houses. It isn't just plumbing; it is also electrical and HVAC that are completely unworkable in most houses and even some commercial buildings.
