Bro it does not mean no clogs
Yeah, I've known about this trick for a long time. One unexpected side effect that might affect some toilets: holding the flapper up longer seems to increase the chances that the chain will kink, thus not permitting the flapper to close completely. If you don't notice this, your toilet could be running for hours trying to refill itself, wasting tons of water.
😭Lol😭
a trick : you can watch movies at InstaFlixxer. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Miller Moshe Yea, have been using InstaFlixxer for months myself :D
I just watched a “how to” flush a toilet video. It’s official. I watch too many YT videos.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
And the fact that I’m watching at 3am sober makes it worst!!
Lol! 😂😂😂😂😂
Yes - It's bad when you need to be taught how to flush the toilet.
This is the second one for the basement bat. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxOuLt8IL_GxhhaK8DBuKEL-zV0UJVpWZn , works great
LOL I’ve been doing this for years and thought no one else knew about it. It works very well.😉
Its not working 😣
Nah.
Toilet flush🚽💧💧
Lol 👁👄👁
Same
I've been using this technique for years but for a different reason. Our toilets are 30+ years old with the flapper valve. Oftentimes the chain would kink resulting in a flapper that would not seal and run endlessly. Holding the flush handle down until the tank empties keeps the chain straight and guarantees a good seal. Nice to know there are other benefits.
I’ve been doing this for years. Works well. Tell all your friends. Help them avoid a crappy situation.
I have been telling my kids and wife this for years!!!!! But they never listen and the toilet backs up like you said. You can bet I will be sharing this video with them. Thanks!
If you are a toilet clogger ( as I am ) a great solution is just as you sit down, put your finger lightly over the button, and just as the turd drops, quickly push the button and the water takes the turd away before it jams in the bend. It takes a little practice with the timing but it works a treat once you perfect it !!
LOL man you got it figured out
Your method will also keep the water from splashing your nice warm butt with very cold water! Then you have to plunge a different hole!
Heh. I would have said he had it fingured out!@@Encourageable
Thank you for this video! My teenage son has regularly plugged up our 1.6GPF toilet in our house (for years now). So much so, that I've had to remove the toilet and clear the blockages on multiple occasions. I had him watch your video yesterday and then reminded him today to use this method when I heard him walking upstairs. Guess what? We had smooth sailing, no plunger today!!! I came to your channel for the awesome Swardman lawn mowers, but the most applicable video for me has been this toilet video, LOL. Another observation, I am positive I subscribed to your channel earlier this year when you did the review on the Swardman Electra but I just had to hit the subscribe button again today.
I really appreciate the feedback and kind words a lot. Thank you for being part of the channel.
I’m glad to see somebody came out and showed this technique in a video. I’ve been using this technique for quite a while. Probably since they came out with these new low-water flush toilets
Sanford Swanson hello, but do you know where these ;water saving toilets came from ‘ STEVENS TECH IN HOBOKEN NJ CHEERS FROM NJ🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
If you're flap is dropping too quickly only allowing a small amount of water to go from the tank into the bowl, then your flap needs adjusted. They can be adjusted to allow more water to go into the bowl before it drops down. Usually it's around 75 to 90% of the tanks water volume that gets released into the bowl before the flap drops. In the video it looks like maybe 25% of the water is being released ... thus the flap needs to be adjusted.
👍👍👍👍
Very interesting. I had noticed that holding down the handle seemed to help, but I wasn't sure if I was just imagining it. So what I can do to save water is to; 1: For liquid waste or other liquids, do not hold down the handle. For solids, hold down the handle. Similar to the new two-button flushes on newer toilets. Thanks, great video.
Thank you, yes that's it exactly. Just use it when you need the extra boost. Nice too that it's always been there, manufacturers secret
The funny thing is that it didn't flush all the dye when he didn't hold the handle. If it couldn't flush dye, how could it flush pee?

Excellent video. Well done and efficiently demonstrated without all the clutter of most other videos. I will be watching for more information from Silver Cymbal. Thank you!
Great video! Same advise my plumber gave me. He told me "I you want to save water, add the low flow stuff to everything but the toilet." He also advised to set the tank to fill to the max level.
Sometimes I pee outside in my backyard when drinking beer. It's easier and saves water, lol.
when i got my first new toilet i set everything to the max on its Syphon never had a problem ... its a Prestige Astley Close Coupled Toilet
OMGosh thank you! I just watched five different complicated videos showing why a toilet doesn’t flush well, and yours was all I needed. Great tip, thanks again…
I was skeptical, but wow... Cannot believe this worked. Shoutout to this vid for saving us
Just wanted to thank you for this easy trick.. I had my wife watch this video and we have been doing this for several months without a single clog. I used to get about a clog once a month or so.. I asm 82 years old and don't need the hassle of plunging often. Thanks again.
You also should occasionally during a particularly heavy dumping do what is referred to in some parts of the world as a “ courtesy flush”
😄 😅 😆 🤣
At work I yell... throw sum water on that 💩💩💩 it's free! Hahaha 🤭🤨🤢
I've taken some pretty big dumps, where even holding the handle down until the tank was empty still didn't work.
That made me laugh so much, it can only do so much but it definitely helps a lot.
Sounds like you need a different toilet model
Me too. And I’d be worried about overflowing! But I’ll definitely try holding it a little longer next time make a deposit.
Add a paint stick to chop first 😷😷
Dreaklock you need to refer to his other video regarding Courtesy flushes.
I have two new Koehler low flow toilets that flush great, even big dumps. The only toilet in my house that has clogged is an older one that uses about 2x the water.
Great Tip!
Excellent cinematography!!
Excellent Video
Thanks!!
I appreciate that a lot thank you
Been doing this for months now in my basement toilet as I found the unflushed portion was starting to smell up the bathroom unless I ran the fan constantly, and hated waiting to double-flush. Just realized while watching this video that while the two upstairs toilets have had some clogs over the past year (wife and two daughters) the basement one has been trouble free for just over a year now except for needing a replacement water inlet valve at the wall. So the toilet was not even at issue.
I recently discovered this in one of my toilets. Now I know it wasn't a fluke.
🤔 WHY SO MANY THUMBS DOWN on this recommendation ? Thumbs UP for me !
In the case of my son's oversized sea pickles, the first tool of choice is a coat hanger.
Sea pickles LOL
I laughed way too hard over sea pickles.
...Or the poop knife
ua-cam.com/video/V7536Zt090w/v-deo.html
I already knew this but it's nice to see it reiterated to the masses. 👍 PS. I have a really old toilet that flushes like it's turbo charged. I think I'll hang on to it for a while longer. 😄 Wasting water..? Oh well! That's what I say.
Also, if you double flush always wait for the first flush to complete filling before flushing a second time or you could cause an overflow out of the bowl. Not a pleasant thing.
i've noticed something similar, but i didn't know how it worked. i just sort of "intuitively" knew something was happening when i stand on the flush lever. thanks for splaining it!
Holy Crap! This worked. So simple, yet so effective. Thanks for the video.
I figured that out myself and it works.
Yup. I been doing exactly that. "Save the Planet, Spend more money." LED, R22, ect. Just wait until people realize they need to spend $10,000 to replace their AC unit because R22 wont be available anymore.

I find a clogged toilet can be cleared with a good shot of Liquid Dishwashing detergent. If the first shot only partly clears add more then a short press allows the soap to swirl works every tin.
😁 this will be the next thing on my list to train my wife. At the moment working on "turn on the exhaust fan timer before taking a shower".
Go Pats!
You guys definitely had a hell of a dynasty that dominated for many, many years, but the Titans actually pulled the lid off before holding the handle down longer and watched it all flush down the drain.
I've been trying to train my wife to use the exhaust fan timer for 2 yrs as well.. "It's too cold in here when I get out of the shower" is the response she's chosen
Love the Patriots!!!
maybe it’ll work better if you’re suggesting and not “training” her like a dog.

Absolutely true
I have a 1980 toilet with a 5 gal flush. I put a one gallon jug in the tank to reduce the flush to 4 gal. In 24 years, it has only failed to completely flush a few times.
Best way I found to unclog a toilet drain is not a plunger. Stand on a chair in front of toilet with a 5 gallon Home Depot pail filled with water. Holding pail as high as possible, aim the water directly into drain in bottom of toilet. This large volume of water entering with such force from such a height usually cleans out any clog in 1 to 2 tries. I do it a 3rd time to ensure drain is completely clear, then test flush to see that it flushes quickly and completely on its own. (No more plungers sucking messy poop back into the bowl)
Yeah I've been having to hold my 24 year old toilets with probably 10 year old or newer 2" diameter flaps for a good while. I'm wondering if it's the rim jets getting plugged or just that I need to get new toilets with 3" flaps.
Thanks for this. Watched way too many vids about toilets today but I needed this!
I'm glad I found this video, this just proves that the regulation for using less water in toilets is meaningless because just think about it for a second, these low flow toilets actually use MORE water than an older 3.5 gallon per flush toilet since you'll end up having to flush a newer toilet multiple times just to get stuff down due to how easily they clog. That's why I always prefer older toilets unless they are in really bad shape, they will perform better 9 times out of 10 compared to an older toilet.
I have thought of doing this but my thing is if the toilet is clogged with solid waste adding that much water to the toilet is going to make it over flow, isn't it? I flush with the seat down ever since finding out that flushing with it open creates a microscopic vortex of bacteria and poo particles that spew from the toilet, so I'm not sure, but I'm just afraid I will try this and then everything will overflow.
Thank you so much!
This actually works.
Watching this while using the toilet. Thank you UA-cam. Now I'm paranoid. 😳
Holy cow. Can't believe I didn't know about this for 40 years... Lol I mean I tried it, it definitely works exactly like you said! Nuts!
Good video. Do you know the name of the ad on kit? I’d like to purchase it.I have a glacier Bay toilet. Thank you
This video was so helpful!! Thank you so much!!!
Happy New Year! Good info! Thank you
Thank you
I've been doing this for years. I do have a question though. I am about ready to replace a 25-year-old toilet and considering one of the dual flush models with the push buttons. Does this technique work with those too? I'm concerned because the newer models use significantly less water than the one I have now. So it would be nice to know that I have some control over how much water is used.
If it's yellow it's mellow... if it's brown flush it down, as shown here.
My toilet has 2 buttons on top. The second and 3rd toilets have them on the side and the instructions the builder left essentially state one is for "solids" and the other is for "liquids".
Perfect video!
We had new so-called water saver toilet put in r rental 2years ago & it took them 2 weeks to get it working properly & didn’t know about holding the handle down to get a good flush but have just flush let go & the handle goes back up slow was wondering is that normal or is the handle suppose to go back up fast??
Awesome tip! Thank you.
Thank you
Yes!! I knew I wasn't crazy!!!
I adjusted the level and hold the handle down using less water and getting a good flush. When in doubt after a bad one simply flush again to clear the whole line .
THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION AND VIDEO. IT HELPED!
Glad it helped!
how about just adjusting the flapper so it stays open longer and flushes properly. most of them are adjustasble.
how do you increase the water flow to refill the tank? mine is very slow thanks
This isn't a trick or lucky coincidence. Modern toilets use Dual Flush mechanisms. You're supposed to use the quick flush for #1, and the long flush for #2. Unfortunately few people know this.
Great idea. I have to plunger out the toilet about every 2 weeks.
I hope 🤞 this works ! I bought a new house but with old toilets might to replace all of them and yeah... this is going to be expensive.
Outstanding! Thank you!!!
This is common sense. But the video is so well done you earned the like sir. 👍
Common sense would be to adjust the tank parts
I just as usual came across this video looking for something else. But funny thing is I figured this out about a year ago because I live in the country and get build up in my bowl and tank. I figured it being if I held the stopper up it would fill with more cleaner water and less mineral build up from old water sitting in tank. Besides usink the tablets this seemed to help 😎
Thank you!
Simple solution is go with a 3” flush valve, haven’t had to use a plunger for the last three years since I change both toilets, got sick and tired of the 2 1/4” flush valve flapper. I now get a three second flush with a 3”
My toilet is the one with the buttons on top 1 yellow 2 for brown. If I hold the button longer will it help with #2 issues
I didn't have to start doing this until I bought a new flapper ! Before I only had to flush normal once like any other toilet! I liked it like that! Now I have to help LD it down! Could it be that the chain is too.loose or too tight?! Can you please help me with this ?! Also after flushing there's barely any water left in the bowl. Any tips would be helpful! Thank you!
Nice, I go a lot, and I have plungers next to each toilet, because they clog a lot
Do you know what the kit is called if I wanted to swap it out?
Now I know how to flush correctly, I need to learn how to poop correctly.
Plenty of roughage in the diet and you just pebble dash the bog. Flushes a treat.
MOST toilets were designed for 1 and 2 separately.
1- press and release the handle. this is sufficient to flush over 90% of liquid waste.
2- press and hold until empty. this was designed to clean solids from the bowl.
another tip :
carefully !!!! adjust your float allowing the water to fill the tank to ALMOST to the very top of the overflow tube.
a higher water level in the tank = greater flushing power for your toilet in either mode.
don't forget - chew your food. your toilet will thank you.
The crappy toilets they're complaining about here weren't designed for that; they're just out of adjustment. Typically the chain is too long or the flapper is gummed up, or is the wrong flapper. I've never seen an early 1.6 gallon toilet (in the U.S) that wouldn't flush completely if adjusted properly, without holding the handle down.
I hold the toilet handle and it flushes longer thanks for this tip!
Good video!
Thank you
I had a plumber install a new Kohler toilet a couple of years ago. He said to hold the handle down for 'number two' ! 😀
Wow Thanks Just did it now. For the 1st time.
Glad it helped
My life has changed I'm so amazed wow best secret ever hahaha
It will change again if you use Japanesse bidet for the first time.
My friend has an old high flow toilet which takes forever to flush, but it can take a lot of abuse. Took a huge dump and put a dozen swabs of toilet paper to the point I couldn’t see much water and it still flushed it down.

all the 3 new toilets I installed in the last two years didn't have any problem fully flushing. They were the dual flush type. I think the toilet makers had improved their design.
Yep, this works, been doing it for years. Quick flush with #1, #2 hold it down....
This was built this way to conserve water.
Quick flush = for a #1 hold the the handle down for a #2
You saw that the quick flush didn't take the dye, right? If it didn't take dye, why would it take pee?
@@OCC_Plumbing_and_Restorations obviously the replacement water to fill up the bowl after the half flush is blue coming from tank
Why do you see blue in the bowl after a full flush ?
@@anthony9869 There wasn't blue after the full flush
I always on mine hold the handle down after you poop but if just pissed then flush and let go
I trained my family to do this years ago but my problem is when someone comes over and they use the downstairs lav. They plug it every time they download data. What is the device called that does it automatically?
A properly adjusted flush mechanism. If you have the right flapper, and the right length chain, it should lift up and float until the water drops nearly to the bottom. If you have to hold the handle down, something is wrong.
Step 1, shorten the chain until it's snug when the flapper is down, then lengthen it 2 links. If that doesn't do it, the flapper might be dirty or scaled up.
I usually crap like a yak, I’m curious to see if this works next time I drop a baby arm.
thanks for sharing
This old technology. People in high tech San Francisco just drop their pants in public, no flushing needed. The rest of the US is so backwards.
Seattle too. They’re not far behind.
It helps to flush a couple times before you are finished. That way you don't get one giant clog.
True!
PLEASE HELP: What is the name of the add-on kit? Moved into a new place and replaced the old toilets with brand news ones and the toilets would stop working - I'd flush over a number of days and sometimes they would finally start working for a while.
Called plumber who actually had to go into my downstairs neighbor's ceiling and discovered that because of the PVC fitting that was put into the old pipes there's nothing I can do. He said that while that fitting was not up to code, it was the only kind they could use for that configuration. The new toilets don't push through enough water in between uses so things eventually clog up in that fitting.
We're not talking about a regular clog you can unstop with a plunger. We're talking about a clog in the pipes that causes both toilets to stop working. Cost me $650 to get those pipes unclogged. He did suggest holding the handle down as shown in the video but I can't take the chance of these pipes clogging up again because, again, plunger does not work and it costs and arm and a leg to get the pipes unclogged.
Another plumber told me that there is a kit that will basically make the toilet use more water like the old ones (that's why there wasn't any problem before I moved into the place because the toilets were old.) He is ordering the kit to install but I would like to know the name so I can research it. Sorry this is long but it's a complicated problem.
Nice content, thank you

Does this work with the toilets that have a button at the top to flush?
My toilet has been clogging so much and I am scared it might clog again so should I do this next time I go to toilet ??
What if it clogs
You seem to know your stuff. I have an American Standard champion. Like most these days, there is a riser in the tank. It prevents you from emptying the whole tank by holding the handle. My fix for this was raising the fill tube a couple of inches so there is more water available to flush. They redesigned the toilet, but failed to take into consideration the sewer system that carries the waste to where it needs to go. It's like running an engine with no oil.
Is it kind of like AC filter manufacturers selling expensive filters that block viruses, pet dander, and odors without considering that the air flow in most systems is set up to use the cheap fiberglass filters. The expensive ones restrict air flow and works the system harder and wrecks efficiency. Plus, based on my vacuum cleaner those filters (which I got thinking to help my wife's asthma--nothing seems to have changed there) aren't catching much.
@@wwiiinplastic4712 Years ago, my Furnace/AC man told me to use the cheap fiberglass filters in the summer (for AC) and we could use the more expensive filters in the winter for the heat. He said that the cold AC air can't efficiently get through the expensive filters.
Been doing this for years in order to clear all the beef sticks from my bowl.....
This work on toilets w the #1 and #2 push buttons?
It may for the #2 position, it depends on the model.
Valuable information
Thank you
This "trick" merely provides a finishing touch to the flush by possibly eliminating leftover artifacts. This does NOT stop clogs. If it's too much to flush and it causes a clog, that happens early in the flush and adding more water to the problem will not help, in fact, it will probably cause it to overflow the rim!
I am surprised how everyday items differ in the US from those we have in Europe. I've never seen this type of flush. In addition, the entire toilet looks as if it had a different drain design. At least the plunger is the same :)
So awsm it helped alot
laughs while watching this sitting on toilet from 1960.
They do tell you about it, it’s in the instructions when you buy the toilet, it’s called a “double flush toilet.” 😂
You are confusing dual-flush toilets with this. Dual flushes have a built in mechanism to do what I am showing here. The end results the same, except you have to buy a more expensive dual flush toilet. This accomplishes the same thing with the toilet you have.
good advice - however if your #2 is one solid piece you will need multiple flushes and maybe something to break it into pieces
