    1. Add layers. Break up one block colors. Rip your clothes and then stitch in a different color.
    2. Add more detail. More necklaces the better. Chains everywhere. More little gimmicks. Braid hair, use hats/helmets, use face (warpaint/piercings/scars/moles).
    3. MORE DIRT. Add rips, blood, dirt, used look, cut and sew back together.

    I've been larping for 10+ years now. The best costume tip I ever received was "clothes, not costumes". My current larp costume is a mismatch bundle of Viking and European medieval clothing with splashes of fantasy pieces I've collected over the years. I've done my best to use historical fabric like linen and wool, this has actually made a world of difference. People wore these things at points in history for good reasons.

    the warpaint here is amazing! my druid could use some blue face paint (and the blood healing suggestion, that's a dope idea!)

    Yep, add a little wear-n-tear, and stains, a bit of grime, if one's character lives that kind of life.
    If one's character isn't living that kind of life, then adding 'tat' is good way to personalise one's character; by 'tat' I mean the necklaces, the charms, the amulets, the tokens (like the beaded things on that leather strap on your belt), that adds visual texture and interest. In our modern day, we have very little embellishment, so I can see why most of us don't think about embellishments to our clothes or bodies (except tattoos). Bracelets, necklaces, belt tokens, earrings, hair ornaments, are all great ways to embellish a costume. If one's not talented with sewing, one could still take a needle and some coloured thread or embroidery floss, and do a simple running stitch across the fabric to add some visual texture and break up the large blocks of colour.
    Side notes: I like your face paints and costume, they are splendid :)

    I love what you did to your cloak! You did texture as well as colour, I always think that's super important. I reckon that's the trick to good monochrome outfits too, eg in something like Vampire everyone is in head to toe black lol. The most amazing, big goth VtM costumes I've seen made great use of texture! Netting, velvet, silk, fur, jacquards, there was even black-on-black embroidery. Good use of monochrome can be really striking IMO!

      I just have to add: I don't believe in "black on black" too much - I think dark browns and shades of grey (lol) work so much better

    My first LARP-Armor is a leather-patchwork-poncho. Befor it I never worked with leather. I just had a rough idea how I wanted it to be and then just starded putting leather-pieced together with rivets. It's automaticly split up and not one big blob of color. It obviosly doesn't fit perfetly as I'm not that good with crafts, which makes it way more authentic. And the first full day in the rain even improved that further. I really love it, it suits my character and it was cheap and easy to make.
    With authenic looks of face and skin: Last conquest I had shitty leg compresses that gave me blisters all round the lags. with the inside of my pants showing over them, opening them up and clustering them with fluff they look utterly terible and authenic. But some of my group make me clean them up and put bandages on them. :/

      That were just blisters, nothing really bad. :/
      Thanks. :)

      SONJAS ADVENTURES Very true. I was actually talking about your LARP group you belong too. The Celtic fantasy is so cool. I really like your garb. I also enjoy your videos they are very entertaining. I'm trying to get a group together it's slow going. Thank you for the inspiration. Hope to see more of your videos in the future.

    I have been playing off and on for quite a few years (mostly due to my schedule not working on well/lack of rides) but I feel like I have never quite pinned down my character's garb or what to d with it. And now it's changing again because for once I can finally afford to look into getting actual armor for her. But even after all of these years, I still don't know if I feel like I know what I'm doing with making something that fits me and works for me. How do you really get into figuring what you should/can wear for your character? I find this to be a bit difficult, as I am rather curvy, so a lot of things that look good on slender people do not work so well for me.
    Some of where I think I'm having a bit of a problem is that my character is from an Irish themed region, but she started out as a civilian there, not a warrior. Most of her becoming a warrior happened after she started traveling and ended up in a more European inspired area. I've been trying to figure out what influences she's gotten from either place. Most her armor will probably be European, but what influences does she still have from home?

    • @SonjasAdventures
      @SonjasAdventures  4 роки тому +1

      Do I understand you correctly that she has an Irish influence? You could take a look at Irish traditional dresses - and Pinterest will be yoir absolute friend. We have started making Larp Boards there for your inspiration. So check out www.pinterest.com/SonjasAdventures - maybe something helps yoi

    Instead of buying fur online, go to any local flee market. They usually have lots of fur in spring and early summer. I often get whole fox coats for 10 to 20 euro. Anything over 30 is a waste of money in therms of fur coats.

    any tips on costume upgrades for a larp character that is poor?

    • @SonjasAdventures
      @SonjasAdventures  5 років тому

      yes totally. the same rules apply: More details, break up big color blogs, apply DIRT and make your stuff look used, and think about gadgets a poor person would have with them. Also, what would they do? They wont buy a new pair of pants, they would stitch it up, patch it up and make it work =) Details really are the magic ingredient
