  • This is a super easy DIY handmade Viking/Pagan Staff for your Photoshoot, ceremony, wedding, cosplay or whatever you want to use it for!
I'll explain you step by step how to create an absolute individual piece of art. You are completely free to use whatever materials you like. Instead of a skull you could also use a nice stone or crystal. Instead of using a woodburning machine for the decoration, you can simply use acrylic paint. There are so many possibilities and it's easy. A lot of work, but easy. :)
What's the important thing: it's cheap! I found the skull on Ebay for 16€, I found the feathers on the street and the stick in the woods. Only the leather bands were bought for 5€ or something. The bones are from a chicken I cooked for the dogs. :) Be creative, you don't have to be rich to create!
Have fun! And leave a comment or subscribe if you liked it. More viking craft themed videos are planned. :)

Personally for these projects I use pvc pipes because I do not live in a area with big sticks but after adding some fabric, bones etc makes everything come together!

Excellent project! I am sure it has infused with your energy as you made it & will continue as you use it. One tip: if you spray the leather bands holding the skull with water, as it dries it will shrink & tighten the grip on the staff, making it even more solid. Great job!

Just an FYI, if you don't have a wood-burning tool, you can use a Dremel or other rotary tool with a spherical burr to dig out the designs, and then just use a black acrylic or ink wash to stain the lines.

@@jointhedogmom103 Oh, a tip if you continue seeking out wood for staffs. I've found that a pocket folding saw can be a real time saver. A knife for shaving off dead bark while you're out in the woods is good, too. Just be careful about your hands. I learned that the hard way!
I seek out deadwood like your example; in fact, I found a wonderful one today! Long and straight, the bark crumbled right in my hands, revealing strong wood. It found me, I believe. I'll use either boiled linseed oil or spar urethane so the wood's beauty will show through.

Hi! I like how your staff turned out!
If you pick the right kind of wood you won't need varnishing in order to protect it from elements.
I usually make my hiking sticks out of chestnut (especially from trees regrown after being cut down) or Black Locust (Robinia Pseudoacacia).
Larch is also a good pick, as it is almost complely waterproof, with the dowside of darkening quite a lot on the long run and possibly being a bit sticky.
As a finishing, I usually burn the bottom tip on a flame until it blackens evenly (to harden it) and apply olive oil on the whole piece to make the natural colors of the wood stick out nicely.
    Grüße aus Italien!

Oh thank you so much! Oh this is super interesting! I can imagine that sticks made out of chestnut wood look super good 😍 I took what I could find and the Linden wood, that we got here around Berlin a LOT, is really nice for staffs as well. It's so nice to hear from other people around the world crafting staffs too! Awesome! 🥰

A suggestion, instead of using a knife to debark and deknob? A small hand axe/hatchet could be just as effective and faster. To me it also brings a much closer connection to the ancestors of old.

Cool staff, though vikings, or their völvas used spinners as staffs, the thing you use when twining wool, and its probably cheaper then buying those materials i presume, also instead of dulling a scissor cuting sand paper , folt it wit the sandy side inward and tear it off, use a bench or table if you are afraid 9f not getting it straight.

The truth is that we don't absolutely know for sure what the völvas used, as there's no contemporary written record of them. Iron rods have been found in some of the burials and are theorized to be völvas staffs. It is also theorized that wooden staffs were also used, but as they would have deteriorated there's no trace of them left after a thousand years.

My question why varnish your staff? I guess I understand to protect it like another wood. I guess when I made my staff something told me to keep it as natural as I could. I used a bees wax butcher block treatment to help protect it. And I'm not sure if it's right now after study but I gave my staff a copper "shoe" to protect its foot. A plate of copper wrapped on the bottom and about a half inch up. But nice video.

We have the iron rods because those are the ones that have survived 1000 years in a burial mound. It is theorized that wooden staffs were also used, but there's no trace of them left after all this time

The Oseberg Ship burial has an iron rod that is theorized to have been a völvas staff. There are a few other female graves that contained iron rods as well. Wood staffs would not have survived from the Viking age since that was over a thousand years ago

Hey thanks for your question (and compliment ^-^)! Maybe you can tell me, why linseed oil? I am still pretty new to the wood work stuff and thought that it might be better to varnish it, if it need to withstand rain and snow and dirt and all of that. Would linseed oil have worked too? I'd be interested :) I'd love to learn that natural materials can protect wood, just as a chemical varnish does. :) have a great day!

@@jointhedogmom103 I've used linseed oil on staffs and it works well, especially if on deadwood that's been stained beneath the bark with fungus. The oil really brings the staining out, and the results can be beautiful.

    That’s cool!
I made one from a hollow metal 6ft long pipe and cut them into 3 separate sections so I can connect and disconnect them any time.
My staff has many use, it can be a chair AND it can stored survival items inside. I wrap the metal staff with fake wood tape so it can look like wood. 😂
My staff has a compass on top and a window breaker at the bottom plus the hand cordage at the top to give it a grip for my hands. The only thing I did not make are the Viking symbols and I’m debating if I want to make a staff holder to hold my staff when I’m not using it.
