An add on to the wax-paper wrap. You can dip the parcel in melted beeswax or melted rendered tallow to give it an airtight seal. Other waxes, provided they are food-grade will work as well, but beeswax and tallow are what was used in history.

That's actually something I've discovered since doing this video! I need to do a video about making them for sure.

Honestly, carrying salted peanuts around has saved me at every LARP. High energy, doesn't really look out of place in any kind of setting, good salt amount since you're sweating (only good if you remember to hydrate properly, DRINK WATER) also carrying them around in a cloth bag leads to endless dumb fun jokes about your character's salty nut-sack.

every morning i make what my family calls 'trucker's eggs'. first you cook the bacon in a pan, but DONT dump the grease, when your done you make your scrambled eggs in that same pan, the bacon grease infuses with the eggs. we called it 'trucker's eggs' because my dad was a truck driver and when he'd come home he'd make them for us. so its also my way of honoring his memory at larp.

1-prior to the industrial revolution, sugar ( boiled sweets ) , paper , glass are all extremely expensive and not the kind of thing you are going to just use like this .
2- fresh berries do not travel well and so will not be in a ration
3- most people ate mostly bread and potage ( think oat meal or similar stewed grains ) with beer
4- meat is smoked , salted , dried to preserve it from rot. even hard boiled eggs you are not going to carry for more than a day before they are destroyed or become a health concern ( so will not be in a ration )
5- thin crispy things in a bag you carry over land will be dust in a few hours and so will not be in a ration , think hard tack instead( 2 inch wide by 1/4 inch thick flower and water with no other ingredients baked then let cool then baked again then let cool then baked again ,until its hard as a rock )
6- soft cheese in a bag you carry over land will be a stain on your bag by the time you stop to eat it 3 days later so will not be a ration , think vary hard salted cheese dipped in wax or rapped in waxed linen

I often travel with trail-mix (seeds, nuts, dried fruit, ect), a small tin of boiled sweets, a bag of beef jerky, like three water bottles, a carrot, and some kind of bread roll or a Vegemite sandwich.

Love it! I always have trail mix! I am not sure why I did not have it in the video, but it is a great choice for sure.

A small summer sausage, cheese, crackers or bread and some fresh or dried fruit is a good snack or lunch. Maybe some carrots or celery for fresh veggies.

I don’t LARP, I am a Viking re-enactor but I just subscribed because your thoughts and presentation are so great and your comments section are spot on for a lot of what I do and would like to be doing at the Viking Fests. Keep up the good work and there is gold in your comment section. Thank you.

You can also use beeswax wraps, you don't need the twine, just heat the wrap up with your hands and it sticks to itself and it's reusable so it's environmentally friendly like in the olden days! And immersive too!

"Góðan dag!" from Fritjof Skjoldsbitt, Wolf of Carpathia.
I found several Viking age flatbread recipes, and cobbled together a version using some flours that my stomach digests a little better. Wrapped a few up in squares of scrap linen, along with some beef jerky and walnuts. Instant Viking field rations! Those not on a low FODMAPs diet could add fresh or dried apple, and hard cheese is always good - just maybe not in Brisbane summers!

Here it is, two days before Christmas and 2 1/2 weeks before my first larp and I just audibly gasped at the Christmas gift ing jams!!! Because it made me think about how many of them are meat ones that come with cheese, mustard/jam and summer sausage!! And after Christmas I can probably grab a good one for between 5 and 10 dollars???? Oh you best believe thats what im doing in 3 days. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the boiled candies, it's kind of hard to say when they came about but we do know that they really started to become popular in the 17th century thanks to sugar becoming more accessible and in the 18th century candy production really took off. Before that candied fruit and coating pastries and such in sugar was the general approach to candies. However sugar was really quite expensive and as such a luxury, more often used in feasts than day to day life. Honey was more common for making things sweeter as it was far more accessible in day to day life, in Europe that is at least. Oddly enough sesame bars have been around for a very long time often made by Greeks, it's called Pasteli and if memory serves me correctly Romans and Egyptians had their own version of this also.
Love the video by the way! It really expands on your original one.

I actually worked on making some awesome sugared walnuts with very little sugar for another event and people went mad for them! They were so easy and made great trade items in little parchment packs wrapped in twine.

Another thing is that repacking works rather well, especially if you're going for an actual meal and have access to a pot you can use for something easy.
Without a pot, but available hot water also adds a lot of pouch options that are out there, several of the pouches for things like red beans and rice or similar can cook with a bit of hot water and something to close the pouch back up or, even, a large mug with a lid, just break up some dried meat or smoked sausages into it (Or canned options). In a lot of outdoors style stores, at least in the US, if you look in the camping/hiking section, there are larger packs like that where you have the entire meal, just add water, clip the bag closed and either heat or let the hot water work. A bit pricier than other options, but still good.
Another thing that I've done is use the powdered drink mixes, though mainly more of ones like gatoraide or similar that aim at also replenishing other needs alongside water for events, but when hiking, I've added several others on the off chance I need to add things to water. Normally, I just use the single serving packets, but a larp option is to look at the craft stores for the little "potion bottles" with corks, it's rather easy to find ones that fit about a single thing of the mix in, and it's something to add to a drink that looks more fantasy...I actually found a blank "cigar" box at a craft store that I added a bit to just to hold several of the bottles for a supply that looks like something from a fantasy.
Also, don't confuse wax paper with baking paper or parchment paper...you really do not want to stick wax paper in the oven unless you want the wax in your food. Baking paper tends to be greased parchment paper that's a non-stick surface that won't burn in the oven to make several things easier to cook. Wax paper has a coating of wax on paper

Free tiny little cheese that's appears very immersive while also being easy to put on a platter I recommend Baby Bellas and Laughing Cow Cheese wedges. Also there's a slight difference between wax paper and parchment paper but they can be used in the same way and if you can find it I recommend using parchment paper which usually comes in a brown color. Another thing you can do is use a plain piece of cloth and some natural beeswax and melt the beeswax into the cloth to wrap your food. If you do that you do not need to use twine because the wax cloth sticks to itself and it's cheaper in the long run because it's reusable, you can wash it like you wash your dishes. That product is called beeswax wrap and is also available commercially if you don't want to make it yourself.

So glad you showed using the parchment/baking paper! I was hoping someone would say that was okay. Also, instead of putting things in dish towels (the bunched up top takes up too much space IMHO), just make several simple draw-string sacks - I like one for each food type or meal. The sack can double as a hand towel, and can be neatly folded back into your larger satchel when done.

From what I have been able to dig up, it seems that boiled sweets first originated as crystallized fruit in the scottish lowlands in the 1820's, but the indians are thought to have made the first recognizably modern candy as far back as about 250 ACE

    • @thomashongshagen4912
      @thomashongshagen4912 5 років тому

Lollipops are thought to have existed in the 1500's, and boiled sweets use the exact same process, so it isn't unreasonable to assume other hard candies were around at the time. They would have been expensive though, sugar only became affordable by the mid 1700's

Bread-wise, I plan to bake quite a lot of what I want to take with me; specifically, sweet brioche rolls for breakfast, Turkish-style flatbreads with olives, herbs, and garlic to have with sliced meats and cheeses for lunch, and a wholemeal seeded sourdough loaf to have with a beef stew for dinner, and I also plan to make some fudge to trade or sell.
Question: Have you ever taken kitchenware like large pots and/or saucepans, for example, to cook or heat food over a fire when LARPing, and if so, what would you recommend? Because I would like a way to heat up/cook my dinner there and have a hot meal, instead of having the same meal for dinner as lunch. There’s nothing wrong with that, obviously, it’s just my preference :) xx

Sienna Archer I highly recommend cast iron. It has a good range, looks immersive, and you can quickly and easily clean it with a rag and some oil at the end. Just keep in mind it's heavy so not good if you have to hike with it and it does stay hot for a while so have a safe place to set it.
A Dutch oven is a personal favorite (tis cast iron) as you can do anythjng from stews to lovely cakes and most anything in between. I like to fry up some potatoes and veggies in there then cover with scrambled eggs and cheese, cover and cook to have a lovely breakfast pie.

If you want to be truly immersive, take into consideration what your character can afford. A wealthy character would be more likely to afford meat and higher quality baked goods. Where as a farmer might have more vegetables and might possibly have bread baked using wheat they themselves grew.
