Heeeey guys!🤘If this is the first time you hear about LARP, check out our new video right here. It answers all the basic questions about our hobby 😄 : ua-cam.com/video/mWtnql6Epf8/v-deo.html Enjoy!
I am from the United States! My ancestors were the lords of Burg Rennenberg From Linz am Rhein, Germany.. My Heart Flutters with love for stuff like this...
Heyho! I am one of the organizers of the Hordes of Chaos (or Chaos Camp) at the Epic and would like to thank Sonja and her team. This is a really good representation of the spirit of said event. They were really considerate on-site and kindly asked what and how they could film as to not disturb our immersion. They brought their own NPC/sacrifice, so me and some of the guys just staged a little scene that wasn't intrusive at all and completely in character without disrupting the camp's day to day affairs. It's a bit weird to see yourself larping in a video with almost one million views, I didn't really expect that. :D Congrats on the rightfully viral video!
@@nomadikmind3979 Interesting take. I can answer that question, but if you can't appreciate the hobby as a whole, those answers will probably not help you. I'll try nonetheless. Larp (as it's played in Germany) is (like almost every hobby) simply escapism and very manifaceted. One aspect of the hobby in general is roleplay, playing someone else for a weekend, fully immersing yourself in another world, experiencing epic, weird, spooky and/or funny scenes and fascinating characters with engaging stories. The same could be said for TTRPGs or many storydriven PC games. Another aspect of the hobby is creativity. Be it in crafting your gear, building a camp and decorations, writing plots and stories for character backgrounds or for people to live through when larping. I find the very idea that you have to have mental health issues to like that rather narrow minded. As for the "evil" part: You - as you say yourself - portray evil, you are not part of real evil. Or do you consider actors who play villains as evil? Larp cons that have good participants and have a fighting component often times need evil participants. Most adventure cons do that with NPCs, who are the villains. But in a player versus player con, you either don't have a real war or you need evil players, who are willing to be the antagonists. I enjoy enabling other players to be heroes for a moment. Also a lot of people enjoy a good horror story. Orcs or Chaos players are more than willing to put one up for you, that is more than just words. One thing is really important though: We are very carefull, have multiple "escape" mechanisms like safewords and are mindful of the "good" player. We do check if our "victims" are okay out of character and if everything is fine. I have met some of the most genuine, helpful and considerate people in the Chaos Camp.
@@nomadikmind3979 How does mental health have anything to do with this? Those people are hobbyist enjoying something they really like doing ! To me it's much more the contrary, people doing something they like doing versus people like you judging others because they don't understand / do not like it ? It's really weird putting mental health in here. While your social acceptability should be questionned.
Oh heeey!! Thank you for these incredibly kind words! We had a blast in your camp and it was awesome to see how open you guys were to us coming in. Yes, we really tried not to disturb anyone and make the filming as immersive as possible for you still
It’s not my cup of tea, but man, these folks appear to be living their best lives! It’s hard to watch and not just be happy seeing them so happy…good stuff.
What an awesome comment, mate! Seriously! I love that you can look at it and just be like "yeah, not my thing but it's awesome how much fun they are having". More people should be like you!!
Yeah, I love it too!! If you are interested in Larp and wanna see a little more about international events, check out our latest video: ua-cam.com/video/mWtnql6Epf8/v-deo.html
The fact that there's designated "Thief Bags" for thief characters to go around and snatch up just tells me that these are organizers who genuinely care, and want to make sure every character of every background and profession can be included and feel immersed. I have zero doubt in my mind that the founders of Epic Empires grew up playing DND. As a Texan boy, if I ever get the chance to go to Epic Empires and participate, I'd do so in a heartbeat.
this takes me back 30 years when I made chain shirt and instantly was promoted to knight by 30 or so kids. I had so much fun and the kids thought it fun when I sent them on quests. The stories I got when they came back. You could hear how proud they were.
Germans worry about kids and violence but will allow and 14 year old to get on puberty blockers w out parental consent? Or worse? Odd world we live in.
@@edpiv2233 Weird worrying about kids and violence and then they have the audacity to, in a few cases, decide that the 14 year old is mature enough to decide for themselves. Why isn't it like in the good old US of FCKING A. Let old men in government decide if a woman should get an abortion and very importantly, teach all the cops to shoot all black people on sight. Odd indeed.
I'm impressed. I attended the 2022 epic and love what you did with this video. First time I can actually show and describe what epic and larp is with just a link to your video. Well done!
UA-cam recommended this video not something I would do but loved seeing the community coming together doing the thing they love very inspirational to be honest love the content happy larping
As a LARPer in America, this video makes leaves me breathless, not a boffer in sight. and no parking lot background!. epic doesn't do any of this justice. You're vids are amazing!.
@@tobimeier5544 The thing is I never realized I have already been doing it. I love improv acting, building sets, costume design and making character that I embody, I watched this and realized that this is something I could be good at and love doing. The more I look into the hobby, the more excited I become; so yes, I am 100% joining the community. Im still learning for now, so im just drawing up a character for now based on a high fantasy setting and figuring what kind of person I could be. Learning that you can steal gold and go on real quests just blows my mind, so I may do something related to that.

I saw some LARP videos before thanks to ytb recommendations, but I never thought it could be this immersive. Looks awesome. This video genuinely made me want to one day try and attend such a big event.

As someone who's been LARPing in Australia (Swordcraft) for the better part of 10 years it has now become a goal to save up enough to attend an event at Epic Empires
oh awesome mate! Heard about Swordcraft. And we have a bunch of Ozzies at Conquest of Mythodea and Drachenfest as well...we love having you badass lot over!
I met some Australians at Drachenfest. They were playing some kind of Aztecs or Maya, with lots of feathers, so we as Landsknechts (which a lot of feathers) immediately got along great with them, had to trade feathers of course. Sometimes little details make for great interactions.
I have never in my life been apart of any LARP event, but always found them interests and something that I'd love to try. This looked so awesome! Loved seeing all the different camps and outfits. If fills me with great joy seeing these people having so much fun and this event!
Damn how nostalgic I feel now... But in a good way. I used to larp so much from 14 to 20 years old with old friends and since a decade, we completly stoped. I realized by watching that video that I indeed miss it. This place looks really awesome! Great video :)
I love how much attention to detail these guys have in there costumes and how immersive they make it look it's incredible well done good work to all of you and credit where credits due and I can't imagine the time and energy gone into this whole world they have created
while everyone else were bludgeoning each other to death, one guy decide it was a good idea to play a string instrument while walking forward. I like that.
Yes he told his comanding officer that his song would made the troops brave and strong. From time to time the comandernyelled at him to play louder because he cant see any effects
This is something I could see myself involved in! If only I wasn't an old man of 70 years. JRR Tolkien's books captured my imagination as a child, this would capture my love as an adult for the homage to his theme. Thank you for sharing this experience! I can imagine yet again of another time and place!!
You should do it if you think your body can handle it :) People won't judge you for your age if that's what you're afraid of. It's all about whether or not you feel fit enough to do it.
Your enthusiasm is contagious. Thank you for lending a hand in exploring a fascinating potential future hobby from a safe distance at first. :) Danke!!!
hahaaaa love that you like it!! If youre interested check out my other videos too! We made a couple of cool videos about other International events and about different larpers etc
This one looks awesome. I’ve never been to a LARP situation! but I have talked for three hours straight with a knight that wielded a 10 ft tall something something Blade or sword. At the time, I was working at a hotel. We stood at the front desk the whole time. It was him with his 10ft LARP weapon, and Me checking in guest, answering phone calls, and then picking up the conversation right where we left off. It felt almost like I went to the festival.
We've all done it as kids right? Always loved fantasy. Since I saw the movie role models and found this stuff. I've always wanted to attend at least once, my friend does viking reenactment has armor and everything. Looks like a great way to meet people at their best doing something they genuinely love and bond.
Well even role models isnt the best representation of our Hobby, its nice that you liked the impressions! You should ask your friend if he could lend you some stuff and just go with him. Larping has the potential to be the best Hobby you can think of!
In the Middle Ages, the average life expectancy was so low, primarily due to high child mortality rates. Adults who survived childhood often lived to be 50 to 70 years old in some cases up to 90 years. But yes the lifespan back then was in the most cases way lower.
This is like Fantasy Burning Man, and I'm here for it. I think it would be fun to go even as an artist, or chef, as well as a warrior or spellcaster! I've never been that committed to roleplay
Haha - actually, I would say "Conquest of Mythodea" is more like the "Fantasy Burning Man"...that's the world's biggest Larp event with 10,000 people and it's a little more festival like. But I love it, too
I had to look up what LARP even meant. With that said, this looks like a lot of fun. I would have no clue what I was doing but it seams like learning is half the fun of LARPing. Good journey to you all and enjoy what seems like a fantastic hobby.
If you are interested find your local community there is a group in almost every city. If nothing else picking up a skill like sewing is worth it for a few afternoons of your time. Along with making some, interesting connections. I dont do it myself not my scene. I just help one group develop their story/quest. Seeing as I have been their dm for years now. They love picking through my scrap book of discarded ideas.
It is definitely on my larp bucket list to attend one of the big three in Germany some day. But for now, I had a lot of fun spotting quite a few people I know in this video!
Back in the 1990's, i was fascinated by larp's. I would read about these awesome larp events people were having. People would book a whole hotel to run a Vampire larp. Or they would rent a castle for a few day long fantasy larp. Or book a whole cruise ship to run a scifi larp (they decorated the inside of the cruise ship to resemble a space ship). I was soo envious.... But in the end, i never went to any larp events. Mainly because my social skills, suck ass. Anyways, its nice to see people still interested in larping.
A sci-fi larp and a vampire larp? Sounds sweet. Someone should make a Larp theme park where you could build 3 or 4 genres in one massive plot of land, that way your can have a centralized location for medical, non Larp food (especially for those with health requirement diets) and facilities.
@@SonjasAdventures True! I only clicked this video to find out what the meaning of LARP is. I do believe that people should never be afraid to join something like this. There is no way someone that is already involved would judge jou. I believe it would mean the world to them if new people join. You must do what you love. Live is short. If someone from outside think you ar stupid then let them think that. They are missing out on real friendship. What a great community.
My social skills and tolerance for social interaction are both low, I'm a proud introvert. I had an extroverted friend take me to a LARP with him years ago when I was around 19, I had all the same fears as you and it turned our to be great. Everyone at every event I've been to over the years loved seeing someone new and they were one of the most welcoming crowds I've ever experienced. Also keep in mind while at the LARP you aren't you anyway, I built my character to be the complete opposite of myself and just embraced him. It helped me build better social skills and conquer some of my social anxiety. It's never too late and I highly recommend going to an event.
i have no idea why this popped up in my recommended and this particular genre of roleplay really isnt for me but its still awesome to see people so dedicated towards it, seems like an awesome experience
I didn't know this was a thing. I find it truly strange adults would like doing this sort of thing. Then again... I race and spend my money on cars as a hobby. To a larper, I bet that's dumb and silly. Most people just see a car as a utility device like a washing machine. So... in that regard, I get it. Larping (if I'm saying that word right) is pretty damn awesome. EVERYONE has a hobby they love and makes them happy. Larping is just one of the many. Pretty awesome watching this.
You honestly put it so well! Thanks mate!! I really love how well you put this. Also, if you want to know a little more about our crazy hobby, we just uploaded a new video that explains it and shows a few more international Larps: ua-cam.com/video/mWtnql6Epf8/v-deo.html

At first I was awed, then she said "3rd biggest in Germany" and "1200 people" in the same sentence. Jebus, Germans like their LARP. I'd have to drive an hour and a half to attend one and I'll bet there would be around 20-30 people.
Yeah we do have some big Larp events here 😊 If you are interested, I have a video caled "what is larp" as well as "the 6 biggest larp genres", where I show other big Larp events not only from Europe but also Canada etc 😊
One day, my family and I will attend. Together, we will join the Warhammer Fantasy camp, to fight alongside Empire fans. How come I didn't find Epic Empires years ago? How come I am only finding it now in these days where people are panicking about the 'End of the world'.
Haven't people panicked about the "end of the world" for thousands of years? =D There's a Chaos camp and an Empire camp - so you would have to choose your Warhammer Fantasy =D Also, your Family has to be over 18 years old if you take them with you =) I hope you have tons of fun whenever you go!!

im always so envious of people who can actualy roleplay combat and such. ive always wanted to give it a try some day, but since i know my self and have a natural tendency for anger i know i will never give it a go for everyone elses sake. still tho, looks mad fun and i have nothing but respect for all who play along.
oh my I feel like I need to try attending this event one year. Always wanted to play traveling warrior monk character irl. I'd be one of the strange people walking around barefooted in earthly toned robes and armed with calm fury and quarter staff. Martial arts were borderline religion to me at one point of my life and I'd actually even be able to cook food on open fire.
I was on my first Larp ever, last year. And I started with EE. Well, what could I say: I have a new Hobby. Thanks for the video. I could remember every second of what you showed.

5:35 I've unfortunately don't have experience larping yet. But with DnD and other RPG's I've played this was THE golden rule! Help, others, shine. If everyone was trying to give all other players their time in the spotlight, EVERYONE WAS SHINING! What great RP sessions we had

Once you can get past the whole early 1900's germany, germans are actually some of the nicest people I have ever met online. Also some of the funniest and respecting/thoughtful people as well.
I love your coverage of the EE i hope to got there this year. But what i love more is the fact that it is surprising to a lot of people to be always immersed in your character. I feel like american and european larp is very different in terms if outfits, playstile and immersion.
hm, that's not even just an "American" or "European" thing - I know a lot of European Larps that break character often.. but here I never saw it once. And personally, I prefer that 😊 How about you?
I've been interested in Larp but never knew where to start, I also live in a part of the US where that kind of thing just isn't accepted if you are above a certain age
In Britain you used to get up early on a Saturday to head off to your own particularly hobby, 6am say, and whether it was a sport, the climbers and trekkers, or people headed off to a carnival or role-play event, I used to enjoy seeing the busses, mini-busses and car convoys headed off to have fun and lose themselves in whatever pastime was their passion. We'd nod at each other and say, "There goes those caving nutters", or "There goes those role-players", with full knowledge they were probably saying the same thing about us. Long may we all be able to spend time doing what we enjoy doing. I worry that to many people are way too concerned about life and what other people do and think, when they should just be having fun. I've done a couple of these events (a long time ago), and I thoroughly recommend them, It is a cross between a fancy-dress murder-mystery party and real life Dungeons and Dragons, and like everything, the more you put in, the more you get out of it.
that's a great way to put it.. and I think what you are describing will always be the case.. there's always people who care what the neighbours say and think... and then there's people who are happy with their own lifes and are okay with whatever floats someone elses boat. I personally think, as long as you live the life that you WANT to live.. and not just react to whatever your neighbours think you should do..it's worth it and a life well-lived
Well, you do have LARP. =) Just a different type of Larp. And you do have a pretty amazing huge Larp campsite in Canada (Bicolline). So that's something, right?
oh how cool! I totally understand - and I try to explain and show more cool stuff here in our new video if you like: ua-cam.com/video/mWtnql6Epf8/v-deo.html

Man, I always wanted to take part in this. Next year I'll have the funds to start getting into it but I'm afraid I won't be able to ever join. Airfair, tickets, bringing all my gear, thematic camping gear and to learn to cook in a thematic way? Too much for my small brain. Also the expenses to bring all of that over to Europe from over across the pond.
Hey hey, how about you go and take a look at the Epic Empires homepage and choose a camp that interests you. You can then check out that camp on Facebook or Instagram and just get in touch with people. Maybe having someone you can ask questions will help you in that process - I understand that it feels overwhelming at fist. But why not make it an adventure? =)
@SONJAS ADVENTURES I could always start there. Problem is choosing a theme! I might go more of a Bretonnian Knight so I can do Warhammer, or other fantasy settings without being too one sided. (A couple years ago I wanted to do a Gondor Soldier but a lot of LARP places were very adiment on not doing IP specific armor and doing your own custom armor.)
Most camps can help you with those problems. Cooking for example... there might be groups in your camp offering you a place at their table. You pay some money into the pot and you are planed in for some meals, just need a plate. Simply contact your camp with your questions, they can help with allmost anything and will find a solution for you. Some camps like chaos dont cook in the play area... they have a little area outside of the play area for cooking sleeping etc... because well, who wants to see a chaos warrior in the kitchen or taking a nap... would break immersion. But we are still humans and need to eat and sleep... so we moved this away from the playfield :)
No matter if you are into such things or not, you have to respect the level of cultivation something like that requires. There are so many spoken and unspoken rules that you need to spontaniously apply in each situation.
imagine going up there and completely breaking the immersion by showing up as Ghazghkull Thraka and lead the Fantasy Orcs to victory with your Powerclaw and a massive Heavy Shootah.
@@killeanmcchesney5138 Well the orcish way of doing that would be kicking the crap out of the player who is too thick to read the camp concept and believes he can show up as an idiot with probably a shitty costume. :)
Ah LARP... One of the best times I have had with a group of like-minded people! Probably been almost 2 decades since I last larped. I love it when people knock it. Being able to turn off the day to day and immerse yourself into another world is truly wonderful. Sometimes I wish I could get back in it. But at 41 and out of shape? I don't think it would end well. And it seems most of the LARPs that I came across work with pay to play, where you can simply add stats if you fork over the cash. Bummer really, since all the larps I went to were just an entry fee and your points stacked naturally with no way to pay to get an advantage over others.
I role-played in various online games (and I'm talking about serious role-play with month-long plots and what have you), but I'd certainly want to give this a try. Funnily enough itself only about three hundred or so kilometers from where I live, but I am not prepared enough. I'll probably look into it as I remember all those countless months and years of roleplay in MMORPGs with a smile on my lips. Not sure as to what I'd play, but I am certainly not a well-versed warrior. Anyway - thank you for such a great video, Sonja.
The trick is to buy a ticket now, start a bit of preparing (like ordering shoes), and then madly scramble at the last minute to get your costume finished ;)
@@SonjasAdventures it absolutely is the fun part. But I get anxiety at big larp events as it is, let alone when the ambient used language isn't one I understand! lol

Succubus characters.
this takes me back 30 years when I made chain shirt and instantly was promoted to knight by 30 or so kids. I had so much fun and the kids thought it fun when I sent them on quests. The stories I got when they came back. You could hear how proud they were.
Haha yeeees - the magic of immersive experiences!
Odd indeed.
Lol that's amazing
I bet they will remember that for the rest of their lives. Sounds like so much fun

So you are about to join the community? What do you want to larp? What is you character going to be like?
@@tobimeier5544 The thing is I never realized I have already been doing it. oh awesome mate!
SCer here too, I would love these level of events in Aus!

There are players at that age playing LARP, so as long you feel like, and your body would agree - do it!
You wouldn´t be the oldest person there. As long as sleeping in a tent is something you can do: Go for it.
Perfect age for a king, wizard, and so on.

It is like living in the middle ages but without a short lifespan, famine, disease and violent death.

Of all the three, this is the most affordable and the most immersive.
How about you change that now? Believe me, you just need to find your crowd. This could absolutely be something that enriches your life
A sci-fi larp and a vampire larp?
It's never too late and I highly recommend going to an event.
you sound like a psychopathic murderer

Maybe there is an event near by you could attend?
i have no idea why this popped up in my recommended and this particular genre of roleplay really isnt for me but its still awesome to see people so dedicated towards it, seems like an awesome experience

I've been interested in Larp but never knew where to start, I also live in a part of the US where that kind of thing just isn't accepted if you are above a certain age
Thank you for all these amazing videos!
I wish we had stuff like this in America
Well, you do have LARP. =) Just a different type of Larp. And you do have a pretty amazing huge Larp campsite in Canada (Bicolline). So that's something, right?

I just randomly came across this video and I couldn’t be more interested. I’m in America so it’s a long shot, but the idea is definitely on my radar now, thanks!
Oh boy, that looks like a huge amount of fun! The first I heard about LARP was from the movie "Role Models" where it forms a huge part of the movie plot. I'm going to have to look into this in a great more detail!
That movie did more for the Larp community than we'd like to admit :D
awesome Neil! Here's a video that might help you: ua-cam.com/video/mWtnql6Epf8/v-deo.html
I would love to go and just make bread hahah. It sounds so cool! I wish I was still living in Germany, I would have loved to go.
Oh you dont need to cook in an authentic way. Its possible to use a small campingstove in your Tent for example.
@@LUCANVOMDIENST That's pretty reasonable!
Thank you for the video, Sonjas, greetings from Scotland, tapadh leibh a charaid
That would mean the organisers of the Orc camp approve your character concept and costume, as otherwise you wouldn't`t be allowed to attend the event.
To make it even more epic, have someone in a Human camp dress up as Commissar Yarrick. It'd be the Third War for Armageddon all over again!
@@DJROCKSTAZ :: Reunited and it feel so good / Reunited 'cause we understood :: sounds in the background
@@gunblade1980 that doesn’t sound like a very orcish way of doing that lol
I'm 41 with 3 kids and I'm in this video. 😉
42 and out of shape here.. i just do all the other things you can do besides fighting :D
@@tobimeier5544 50+, and in this video. Just keep exercising. 😃
I want to go to this so bad, it's been on my bucket list for a bit now.
Yeah, I understand! What's holding you back so far?
It's pretty cool people come together and take this seriously.
Veeery welcome, If you wanna know more about the hobby check this out: ua-cam.com/video/mWtnql6Epf8/v-deo.html
The trick is to buy a ticket now, start a bit of preparing (like ordering shoes), and then madly scramble at the last minute to get your costume finished ;)
I would love to attend one of these someday. I would really need to sort my costume and knowledge of the german language though!
You can absolutely go without knowing German - the costume is a must, though 😁But that's the fun part right? 😍
@@SonjasAdventures it absolutely is the fun part. But I get anxiety at big larp events as it is, let alone when the ambient used language isn't one I understand! lol
@@BennyB2006uk People around you will talk in english if they know you are not a native german speaker.
@@BennyB2006uk That makes sense! Have you considered going to one of the other big German events where you could join an English speaking group so your surrounding speaks English at least?
@@SonjasAdventures Are there ones you recommend? I have no idea which would fall in that particular category
I would love to be part of this. Either as a mushroom fae or wood elf to lead those astray into a pit or net. Aloha from Hawaii 🌺

I understand why, but I was kind of disappointed the paramedics weren't dressed up like fantasy RPG healers. 😁
Yeah, must be some local ordinance requirement for events like this. But definitely awesome, if like they're part of a healers guild or backstory or something.
They're just paramedics and not part of the game. There are however paramedics among the players and they often play healers. Or thugs.
@ what the-- that's some flip there, from healer to thug or is there something behind it😁
@@GenJuhru haha it's probably just that they attend as Larpers and thus in their role.. but happen to be paramedics in real life. In my Larp group we have a couple of doctors and they have definitely done first aid in their armors on the Battlefield before 😂
Krasse "Herde". 💪
My LARP is waking up, bringing my daughter to daycare, working from 7AM to 4PM, getting daughter from daycare at 4:30PM, taking care of my wife, daughter and dog until I pass out at 10PM. Repeat every day. I'm living the LARPiing dream.
