There are not enough LARP THRIFT videos out there! I love thrifting and (have never larped) love the Idea of larp! Your earrings are so pretty! 14:00 looks like an Myan calender
Great to see another larper demonstrating the options you can find at the thrift store to make costumes and props on a budget. Too often people get intimidated by costuming standards and don't realise how easy a passable costume can be.
I got an garb set at the thriftstore that i use for my alchemist urchin character. And I live in an area that doesnt really have great thriftstores (a lot of polyester or brightly knit grandma vests). Got really lucky once with a bridal corset that I altered for a pirate character. I also got all my cutlery that I bring along to LARPs at the thriftstore (including a plate from the 1800's!) i also got a, what I think is supposed to be, a magnifying glasses (forgot the name im tired) case which looks like a very cute pouch. Its big enough to fit my polaroid camera plus my wallet :)) (and my phone if i squeeze it
The Woodlands! I lived in Tomball for years and was at Renfest every weekend I could get to in oct-nov it felt like home ! Thanks for your thrifty thoughts and ideas !
Wow! That thrift store is incredible! I also loved that you put together entire outfits and showed them off. To do that all at one store is so impressive!
This is such a great idea, I've always wanted to thrift shop for an OC costume but there's hardly any men's clothing at thrift stores and so many thrift stores have up'd the prices and/or shut down
Thrift shops are amazing for so many aspects of LARP. From costuming to props, it's a treasure trove but I've simply become picky where I shop, especially for donations. I just can't bring myself to go to Salvation Army's anymore despite them typically have great stuff.
man, this really makes me want to go out thrifting for some stuff like this. I don't larp or cosplay, but I just love the vibe. Sadly going out isn't really a thing rn
Please do more larp thrifting videos. These are so great! Loved watching and I've seen your videos on a few outlets. I'm so happy i found your UA-cam now. 🥰✨
Thrifting is how I create all of my costumes for Halloween and other .I don't buy new. That thrift store is packed! Never seen one with so much stuff the racks are cluttered!
Thrift stores are good and mines. I found a suede jacket that I turned into a long suede vest and ties in the front and on the sides,9 bucks. Then a pair of rugged looking women's boots for 10 bucks. Looks amazing with my set up.
I’m going to a Ren faire and found (SUPER CHEAP) like WALL of unopened dog collars. And because I found a cup that was perfect for my costumes. (I also already knew I was gonna wrap a dollar store rope around me as a belt!) I grabbed one and now I use that dog collar as a thrifted way to carry my cup around easily! But the cup does have a handle so it only works for cups with handles.
as someone who does AMTguard I can agree that the startling lack of people who actually come in costume and it varies wildly from park to park I would gladly do a more immersive LARP but finding them in my area is hard
Literally the most interesting thrift video besides Halloween ones! I love thrifting and when I’m trying to be careful with money, thrift videos scratch that itch haha! Thank you for making this!
I have been lucky in some thrift stores in finding jester hats as well as high pirate boots. My persona is a jester and i am always on the look out for multicolor tights and loud fabrics.
You walked into that store and I did a double take! I love that place, it’s where I got my current Ren faire shoes and all my scarf/shawl things. I love everything you were able to find!
I LOVE that first outfit. I wasn't even sure about how sparkly that best and the boots were, but you just styled it all so well, like put everything together well and it's so cool looking!
If your on facebook too, Both SCA yardsale, or any Ren fair garage sale pages!!! Thing I use to look for at thrifts for Fairs, SCA, or LARPS. 1, oversized long sleve peasant blouses, can be use for boys or girls, leather anything plain less pockets, Skirts wool plaids like kilts, to peasant long skirts, any plain swades. Really need to make my own vids and basic alterations anyone can do!!!
"I love this texture it looks like leaves" -The garment, just being really wrinkled "OO" Thrift shopping for LARP is like THE best group activity AND its a great way to make some really unique outfits up~! I carried most of my LARP gear I thrifted with me for YEARS from move to move. I finally need to replace some things (and I finally decided I need more than the basic three outfits for three days + OOG clothes for downtime) so I'm probably going out this week or next to get prepped for the season. Whether new OR old to LARP, the best way to find unique stuff is to Thrift & Craft... It's all about how creatively you can look at the ordinary items around you! That green top would have been just a "meh" top to me before LARPing, but now that I've done this thing for a while I can see the "elven" potential. I still use the thrifted leather jacket I got from a Value Village, even 8 years later! I got it, and the arms were too tight, so I seamripped (over an hour to do omg it was tougher sewn than I realized) the arms off and trimmed the raw edges so they weren't stringy, and now I have this staple character piece that's a passable leather vest! I'm going to update it this year with some patches and other sewn on details, to make it more steampunky... But really, some of the BEST finds for your character can be found in these thrift hauls when you apply some creativity to it! Props also - I found a faux leather fanny pack/pouch with belt loops and a cursive letter H on it, and bought it for 8$(CAD). It's my FAVE herb pouch, lol. It's got that fancy embroidery on it, so it makes my character look a little more fancy when she's herb gathering (It also holds my phone and tissues etc). ALSO don't sleep on the fabric! The drapes, sheets and actual fabric lengths can ALL be repurposed to some pretty neat costuming if you've got the time to do a bit of sewing (you can do basic stitches and hand sewing even if you're new to sewing). With all the beginner friendly tutorials on costume making out there, that blanket with all the fur or that large thick drapery, can quickly turn into a thick cloak to keep you warm or a dress!
I feel like this misses something- men's clothing is almost never going to look like period clothing. Women have way more variance in the styles that are present in stores and a lot of those styles work for medieval, whereas with men you'd be lucky to find anything that fits a more medieval theme. Also, it depends on how good your thrift store is- this place has *way* more selection than the one where I'm from. Do I think you could still find something that would work better than your every day wear? Usually yeah, probably. But I also think it's very reasonable for men in particular to say they couldn't find anything that would work at the thrift store.
Well with mens shirts, you can cut the top into a V and add strings to it to look like a basic medieval shirt. It works for peasant looks. But other than that, yeah it can be difficult to find what you want.
Hi! I discovered your channel just today. I wanted to say thank you for showing me what to look for in a thrift store! When I’m older, and when im not broke, I can’t wait to LARP and find great costumes/props for it!
For guys great pants from thrift stores are scrub pants. Besides that I find it pretty tough to find larp clothes for guys. I’m always jealous of all the boots because none would ever fit. I always find good props though.
I've also been LARP shopping in thrift stores, its great! there are a bunch of stores near me! Sadly it is a lot harder to find men's clothes suitable for LARP than it is for woman, but not impossible! great video btw!
Unfortunately it seems like about half the thrift stores in this area are permanently closed after the covid shut down. The one in this video is still open tho.
I would love to thrift for stuff... but I live in a snowbird destination with them dropping off their ugly shirts... and it’s usually t-shirts and broken flip flops. And if not that, it’s always grandma clothes 😳
When you were editing, it would have been better to cut out your distractions ie foam Jack-o-lantern. Obviously that has nada for LARPing. Right? You are fortunate to have such well stocked shops though!👍
Love the video, you are in Dayton? I live in Rhode Island, but I am from Fostoria, near Findlay. What Larps do you know in your area, the only one I know of is Amtgard.
Jessica Hughes yes! The amtgard near me looks dead from their Facebook group. The only other medieval fantasy larp I know within an hour drive is Gisido. There are more closer to Columbus like NERO.
Meeka The Elf I don’t know if it helps, but if you can make it to Springfield I know there is a very good park there. Valley of the twin rivers. Also I think there might be one near Xenia, but I’m not sure about that one.
Anyone have recommendations on the best place to get medieval clothing (1150-1335AD) for men (English), women (Iberian) and children that also doesn't look out of place in the modern world? I was thinking that footwear like the following could suit (whilst not necessarily being perfect) Men: Sandals, Espadrilles, Ropes Sandals, Empire Sandals, Leather Thongs, Menorcan Sandals, Gladiator Sandals, Clogs, Monk Strap, Moccasins, Woven Sandals, Suede Loafer, Chukka Boots, Chelsea boots, Plimsolls, Cuban Heel Chelsea Boots, Chukka Desert Boot, Driving Shoes, Women: Strappy Tie-up Sandals, Knotted Suede Toe Post Sandal, Cross Strap flat sandals, Raffia double strap slide sandals, woven leather tie leg sandal, Mules, Clogs, Over the Knee Boots, Ballet Flats, Lace Up Knee High Boots, Stirrup Boots, Slouch Boot, Desert Lace Up Shoes, Cuban heel western Chelsea boot with buckle detail. Likewise, Quilted Clothing (like Quilted Sweatshirt, Quilted Puffer Coat, Quilted Coat, Quilted Tracksuit Pants, Quilted Tracksuit Top, Quilted Jumper) could suffice for Civilian Gambeson. I’m also thinking that Tunics (Knee, Cocktail, Midi or Maxi Length), Leggings, Tights, Long Sleeved V Neck Shirt, Tank Top, Henley Shirt, Track Pants, Hoodie, T-Shirt with Notch Neck, Driving Gloves, Suede Gloves, Leather Gloves could be used. Correct me if I’m wrong

With much love and appreciation I would like to point out that just because a person doesn’t have the money to thrift doesn’t mean they don’t have a job or work hard. Some people bust their ass to make ends meet and it genuinely is hard to decide to “go thrifting” with something that could be used to get gas wash clothes or buy groceries. Also it insinuates that people who work hard just to live day to day and barely make ends meet or can’t work/obtain a job don’t deserve the joy that comes along with larping/ren faire and that is not true. Everyone deserves escapism. You could have suggested learning to diy garb, thrifting friends closets, and charities which are even cheaper and an easy option for tons of poor people. Just saying “you shouldn’t be larping and should be working” totally came off as classist/judgmental.
Yeah it was probably a bit insensitive. I also posted this before the economy crashed and before it became almost impossible to find a regular job. A lot has changed in 3 years.

I LIVE 30 MINUTES FROM THIS STORE AND SHOP THERE ALL THE TIME!! I ADORE this place, it is the best thrift store for this kind of stuff!!!

The first outfit would make for a great cosplay as some sorta sci fi rebel. it doesn't look medieval but it looks great.
THAT WOODEN OWL CARVING WOULD BE PERFECT FOR AN EDA THE OWL LADY COSPLAY
The Elf outfit in green was nice. I Larp as a green witch.
Love that Amtgard Shade :D!
Great video all around I love Thrift Shopping for LARP events.

And the third outfit! Ahhh! So good! This gives me faith that I can find cool outfits at thrift stores now for cosplay and such.
16:50 you could put your posable bear fox into it and keep the lid half open
to be a lost wanderer hah not a bad idea but he would be too big to fit inside.

Aaaah I love Thrift store shopping, went to two yesterday with my best girl. Picked up a few nice things for my Mystic wood elf for Nero larp!🍃🥀

Sounds like I need to take a trip to Dayton to get some good larp gear
Unfortunately it seems like about half the thrift stores in this area are permanently closed after the covid shut down. The one in this video is still open tho.
All of the 3rd outfit looked good, maybe some minor alterations.
The containers are great for your tent though, right?
Mmmm the items make me want to make a medieval room(s) in my future house
“Macklemore, can we go thrift shopping?”
You’re not wrong about the woodlands tx
I wish I could actually do that, sadly, here in Germany aren't that many thrift stores (at least where I live), so it's kinda hard to do this :/
Aww that sucks

You were lucky when it came to the boots. We never have any long ones, much less size 10.
I wish I had friends like you
as a former Amtgarder i agree
post-apoc punk biker for the black outfit?
Jonatc87 it could be if you weathered it
Where I live it's hard to find men's clothing. Because a lot of guys keep their clothes until it like waste away.
Hah I 100% believe that to be true.
One man's trash is another man's...headache when his GF comes home with said trash.
Cool I'm in Ohio too. How do I find a larping group
This is amazing, thank you!!

Nah this is in Ohio
Anyone have recommendations on the best place to get medieval clothing (1150-1335AD) for men (English), women (Iberian) and children that also doesn't look out of place in the modern world?
I was thinking that footwear like the following could suit (whilst not necessarily being perfect)
Men: Sandals, Espadrilles, Ropes Sandals, Empire Sandals, Leather Thongs, Menorcan Sandals, Gladiator Sandals, Clogs, Monk Strap, Moccasins, Woven Sandals, Suede Loafer, Chukka Boots, Chelsea boots, Plimsolls, Cuban Heel Chelsea Boots, Chukka Desert Boot, Driving Shoes,
Women: Strappy Tie-up Sandals, Knotted Suede Toe Post Sandal, Cross Strap flat sandals, Raffia double strap slide sandals, woven leather tie leg sandal, Mules, Clogs, Over the Knee Boots, Ballet Flats, Lace Up Knee High Boots, Stirrup Boots, Slouch Boot, Desert Lace Up Shoes, Cuban heel western Chelsea boot with buckle detail.
Likewise, Quilted Clothing (like Quilted Sweatshirt, Quilted Puffer Coat, Quilted Coat, Quilted Tracksuit Pants, Quilted Tracksuit Top, Quilted Jumper) could suffice for Civilian Gambeson.
I’m also thinking that Tunics (Knee, Cocktail, Midi or Maxi Length), Leggings, Tights, Long Sleeved V Neck Shirt, Tank Top, Henley Shirt, Track Pants, Hoodie, T-Shirt with Notch Neck, Driving Gloves, Suede Gloves, Leather Gloves could be used.
Correct me if I’m wrong
what store are you in?! there is so much LARP Stuff!!!
It’s called the Valley Thrift store
Omg...where is this thrift store located at.
Dayton Ohio. If you’re in the area just look up Valley Thrift store in your gps.
