Hey Birdman, the outro instrumental sounded like Polyphia or Chon. When I Shazamed it I got some artist named WalaKalala, but after I listened to that song he raps over parts that in your outro didn't have lyrics. So I definitely feel like Shazam betrayed me here. Can you tell me what the outro music was from please?

Bro even if you're not from that culture or community there are still some universal elements that are present even in cultures that are an ocean or continent away. Hell, even traditions such as funerals can be different like in some peoples telling jokes and singing high-spirited songs rather than woefully singing "Danny Boy" addressing the sadness of losing someone is still understandable. (eg. John McCain's funeral and Aretha Franklin's funeral)
Sometimes you need to let the jokes take time to sink in rather than have impatience ruin the moment.
That's kind of why I stopped watching Cinemasins and started watching Th3Birdman.

Also Shuri dawning the suit out of revenge has been a running pattern in the movies
T'Challa's first dawning of his suit that we see is to kill Bucky because of the death of his father in Civil War
Kilmonger dawns the suit lut of revenge for his ancestors in Black Panther
And Shuri does it here for revenge of the deah of her mother
It's a pattern i noticed that whenever you dawn the Black Panther suit the death of a loved one is bound to follow

Shuri's vengeance is increased because Namor is the first person she's been vulnerable with intimately since her brother's loss and the same man who gave something precious from his mother and they shared a joke about being queen comes and takes her mother from her. That deepens the betrayal to say the least.

    • @goughjoshuaa
      @goughjoshuaa Рік тому +27

this comment right here. in just 1 film, she lost her brother, and during the time the entire world was wondering if she was going to take the role of queen, isolated herself from the world, namor, all of a sudden interrupts a deep conversation between her and her mother, pressured and forced to find a girl that even NATIONS want interest in, almost died by a water bomb and went unconscious, waking up thinking okoye drowned, forced to be kidnapped to protect riri, and like you said, he was the first person shuri felt comfortable to talk about what happened, but then it is completed ruined by namor mentioning an alliance to team up against the world and also killing riri, even though if she joins namor, people won't think of her as a hero anymore-
her nation worrying about her, gets held by a knife when nakia is saving her, her trying to save the girl was a trauma response to her trying to save t'challa, her returning back to her nation only to see the city being destroyed, her people dying in the process, and her mother, her last family member (at the time) DIED while trying to save her new friend. the same guy who also killed her mother is the same person that she opened up too and the only person she thought she could trust, also pressured her AGAIN by saying wakanda has a week to turn themselves over or they die and saying that she is potentially queen now, she is also the only person that has to save her nation, no one else.
and that man literally said "she's putting her emotions first". this is just in 1 film, that's not even adding up the trauma she experienced in black panther, and infinity war.

"wow, this is kind off uncomfortable, gassing people is illegal"
Yes you idiot, that's why they are a villain. And in movie scope, as birdman says, forcing the enemy to jump off into the ocean is effectively no different than shooting them in the face while unarmed. Both happen a lot in movies, but it's only a problem when you are uncomfortable with it

Thank you! There's so many things Cinesins doesn't understand and one is the cultural context of movies. The fact they didn't get the jokes in wakanda forever underpins why we need more people analysing films from different backgrounds. Keep up the good stuff!

    • @flippedturtle4739

I would repectfully disagree. I think it’s important that people accross cultural boundaries understand each other, and this includes things like people critiquing a movie, even if it includes a depiction of another culture. Of cource there should be some response to the criticisms, but idea of “this person doesn’t understand the cultural, therefore they shouldn’t offer communtary” is, in my opinion, dangerous grounds for alienation of cultures. Like, I’m watching this movie to get a better or different view of a certain culture or group. I would love it if that group were to change my perspective on that movie or other piece of media.

    • @flippedturtle4739
      @flippedturtle4739 Рік тому +7

For example, I think it’s more culturally illuminating when TheBirdman criticises CinemaSins for not understanding the jokes, and then explains the context a Black audience would be going through that scene with, than if he had just said something like “yep that’s Black humor lol” or something like that. This way I can get a better understanding of precisely WHY Jeremey is an idiot.

    • @reistellae

@@flippedturtle4739 OP didn’t state that people can’t critique art from other cultures, they said we need more perspectives. The most well known movie critics; both professional/renowned and on youtube are predominantly white men from a Western country. Inevitably, there’s going to be cultural contexts that fly over their heads which is why it’s important not that we tell them “don’t critique this” but by inviting more diverse backgrounds into art analysis.

24:20 thank you for saying this. This isn't just a problem with movies but other forms of media that depict uncomfortable topics. People would much rather complain when a story actually tries to challenge your perception of something by showing it to you than actually think about what the message that is being conveyed actually is.
I'd argue the best kind of media is media that doesn't give a shit about how you feel and isn't trying to make you comfortable, real life is shit and when movies and stories actually show that, that's when the the wall that separates fiction from reality crumbles

    • @ajerqureshi6411

I think the only time I draw the line in the depiction of uncomfortable topics is when said depiction romanticizes the uncomfortable topic without any proper hint of proper awareness. Like the show 13 Reasons Why or the movie Joker.

This is why I loved the Malcolm X biopic. It didn't shy away from how systemic racism affected this man and his community from that time. Whereas if we take Queen of the Damned (the movie) (ik Akasha wasn't a real person, was actually a villain and that she called for genocide, but it's not the point), they completely removed the misandry part that was depicted in the book (akasha says she witnessed men causing wars and bloodshed for thousands of years or something like that) and the internal conflict due to her romance with Lestat and changed it to the cliche "vampires hating humans" conflict. While QotD is my favorite movie, I still acknowledge that they were too scared to show her genocidal misandry and why she believed it was a suitable option

A really good example with books is how some stories that are tragedies, or meant to be viewed as a warning without it screaming in your face, are viewed incorrectly. Such as many books where people will claim "This is a romance, but the main pairing is so awful! That guy is abusive! Is this what the writer thinks is romantic?!" Like, no Steve. If you read between the lines, you'd see that this was a cautionary tale.
Then you also have the shameless fun books where the toxicity is the *point*. Because some people like that type of fantasy. Unless the author explicitly states "This is what I personally believe love should look like," death of the author should apply. One of my favorite indie authors has even taken to leaving a damn disclaimer at the beginning of all her romance books stating: "People don't fall in love this fast. If this actually happens, that is a huge red flag."

Interestingly, “critic” discourse is just as bad when it’s the reverse…where instead of confronting audiences with evil topics like suicide, a movie instead tries to present a peaceful and good message (like say forgiveness). Look up for example the endings to Steven Universe or She-Ra: Princesses of Power…two pieces of media where the bad guys that commuted atrocities are forgiven instead of brutally punished. @@ajerqureshi6411 you could say that for any piece of media that has redeemed characters. i havent watched she-ra so i cant say much about it, but steven univere's redemptions are the entire point of the show. steven's mom (rose/pink diamond) was a horrible person. she was manipulative and staged a war against homeworld just to rebel against her bigger sisters because she was bored. she hurt and left many people who ultimately become villains because of how she hurt them. spinel is the most glaring of these, where she was used as a plaything by rose and then abandoned for hundreds of years. she comes back and tries to destroy the earth because shes bitter that steven and the crystal gems got all of rose's love and she didn't. yes she does hurt people and attempt to slaughter millions, but because its a kids show thats not the forefront of the reasoning. spinel is just a broken person who needed to seek a love that wasn't rose's, one she knew she wouldn't be abandoned from eventually. spinel's entire story is about healthy relationships and learning to open yourself up again instead of lashing out because you were hurt by someone who isnt even alive anymore. its about moving on and becoming better. thats the enitre point of steven universe's messaging to kids. i doubt they'd end that movie killing spinel or throwing her in jail. that just wouldnt be satisfying and its like...a kids show. villains can be thrown in jail and that but it just feels wrong for a few of them who havent killed anyone yet. spinel even helps steven shut down her drilling machine and attempts to get better by leaving earth and reconnecting with the diamonds on homeworld. some things can just simply be resolved with "peace", or better put understanding people's circumstances and giving them a chance to grow and change as people rathering than locking them up and throwing away the key or killing them.

I love that you brought up the mispronunciations for characters whose names we literally hear in this movie. It will always baffle me how people can hear a name, sometimes repeated several times in a show or film, and STILL butcher the pronunciation. It's like the people who still pronounce Shang-Chi with a long A, or the people who pronounce Evangelion with a long E.

How does he not understand how Queen Ramonda died? There is a small opening, she was carrying her daughter.. obviously she had to lift Shuri from below to push her up out of the water and exhausted herself in the process… was he expecting her to just dolphin leap them out of the water when she got to the surface? Once you get to the surface your troubles don’t just vanish, especially when one of you is unconscious dead weight and you’re wearing clothes that are sinking and hard to swim in. Just imagine trying to lift and push someone up out of a pool while treading water. You’d basically be underneath them pushing with your head and arms while you kick frantically trying not to sink.
My point is that most people would have been unable to save Shuri and they both would’ve died. Ramonda is a badass and a Queen in every sense of the word!

Honestly i think my biggest problem with marvel movies is that very few villains are ever a consistent threat, since a lot of the movies kill them. Not necessarily always a bad thing, but it cuts down the villain list quite a bit and it kinda sucks to see the more charismatic and interesting ones be contained to a single movie.

If a monarch is assassinated (throughout human history) there is almost always consequences when the actor of the assassination is known. Much less AN OPEN FUCKING ATTACK THAT KILLED COUNTLESS PEOPLE IN YOUR CAPITAL. I get that the convo was focused on M'Baku trying to get Shuri to think like a ruler and see past her grief (or just temper her vengeance) but CinemaSins just straight ignoring history to pick apart that line of dialogue is a little silly.

Not only that, he taunted the next leader with that fucked up (but well-written) "You are queen now!" taunt. This is also likely the first time in Wakandan history that a ruler has been assassinated by an outside hostile country since Wakadan was isolated. So OF COURSE Wakanda would go to war for their dead queen. Countries throughout history have gone to war for far less.

I think that’s the point. Namor is still portrayed in the wrong in this movie because he is acting on pure survival instead of trying see nuance. He’s lived through some horrible shit and humanity is just now beginning to accept one another, but its still taking time, and he is not willing to wait it out while dickweeds in power will try and harm others for being different. He’s not right, buts he’s not completely wrong. Him and Shuri making “peace” is a sign that he could potentially learn to be less judgmental of others, but he’s still not there yet. He will kill to protect his kind, and if he has to, he will destroy all nations to do so. He’s complex is what I’m saying. Most other MCU bad guys are the standard “I will kill/conquer all because is can”. Only Namor and Thanos are doing things that would help people survive, albeit in an extreme sense and in Namor’s case it’s specifically his people. Nuance baby. He makes characters interesting. Besides, this is what he’s like in the comics. He will beef with anyone that threatens his people, good or evil.

It took a decade for Erskine to perfect the serum.
He began developing it in the 1930s and perfected it in the 40s.
Shuri only began working on recreating the herb in 2016. Two years pass and the events of Infinity War happen and she turns into dust.
She comes back in 2023 (late 2023, October) and she resumes her work. Then 2024 rolls around and T'Challa dies before the events of FFH.
She stops working on the herb after her brother's death and makes the Midnight Angels as a possible replacement until the events of this movie in 2025
      2016-2018; 2 years
Late 2023-2024; less than a year
It took Erskine 10 years to make the serum, while it took Shuri less than 3 (since we're not counting the 5 years she was gone)
It took a shorter time for her to make the herb; FASTER than Erskine.
      I see no issue here.
And when was it implied that the serum was made from an ingredient that originated from Wakanda? That's simply a theory (that would be cool if proven true)
But it was never implied his serum had a key ingredient from Wakanda. The best we know is that a green substance was given to Erskine, as revealed in season 7 of AoS, and even then the specifics of what it actually is still isn't given.

The meteorite that hit Wakanda broke off into smaller pieces and some of those pieces landed in other areas that were in areas somewhat close to Wakanda, but far enough for Howard's research team to not get spotted by the Dora Milaje
And T'Challa's grandfather, Azzuri, was never introduced as a proper character in the MCU

For a good example of mutant vs mutate - Wolverine is a mutant. His powers come from the genetic expression of the X-Gene that he had at birth. Deadpool is a mutate, his powers come from the introduction of Wolverine's genetics into his body. Those genetic markers do not naturally exist in Wade Wilson's body, they were introduced by an outside force.

CinemaSins is always so forced and convoluted. I'm so glad someone is dedicated to pointing this out. Great work!
