It's a character and movie aimed at black US-Americans. That's why we never really see any African nations outside of Wakanda, but it goes on and on about colonialism despite Wakanda (like Aethiopia) never having been colonised by Europeans, so isn't it kind of... hypocritical? Also, it ignores any migrations, intra-African land taking and wars among African ethnic groups and tribes centuries before Europeans even made their way south of the Sahara.

When I found out my all time favourite comic book character was not only getting an MCU appearance but his own solo movie to boot I was over the moon. I saw the movie when it came out with these goggles on and loved it. Only after a lot of repeated viewings did I realise that there's a lot of things that don't hold up. T'Chaka choosing to off his brother was dumb, he is actually shown disarming him first so the death blow was unnecessary. T'Chaka's reason for covering up the murder....dumb.... anyone with more than 2 neurons to fire could tell he acted out of self-defence and should the truth of the circumstances become known to the public, Wakanda would clearly love to see a traitor's blood spilled... royalty or not. Leaving a young Erik is the most egregious one.
Furthermore, with what I know about Wakandans from their tech in comic books and in the MCU, there is absolutely no way Klaue could have escaped with a shitload of vibranium AND remained undetected and roaming around for an entire 30 YEARS. Why do they even have War Dogs if they can't track, down and eliminate an enemy of the state. Also M'Baku is kind of a good guy, Nakia is a good guy, W'Kabi is ultimately a bad guy.... all of which are different from the comics. It's a decent outing, not the best. Killmonger cutting the Dora's throat was coolly cruel and cunning. If only there was actual blood so that scene didn't look fake as shit. CGI was awful at some points. Definitely overrated.

You know that scene when T'Challa's sister flipped him off? When I saw that in the theaters with my mom I thought it was a very disrespectful thing to do. I understand that it was a play as annoying siblings but at the end of the day that's still your king. I also didn't like the scene where W'Kabi was on his knees. Images convey a message and that message was not something I enjoyed.

Word, I too like the film, but have my qualms with it. But it's like us black folks aren't allowed to criticize this film, but see as a display of "black pride."
Joke's on these corporate schmucks as my black pride resides in my personal capabilities and accomplishments, not my skin color.
Plus why stop at Blade when we had Spawn, Steel, and Meteor Man(an original hero sure, but that's better)...? Those films came to mind when I heard that "first black hero" B.S. when this film came out.
But going back to being unable to criticize this film, it's that conformist hive-mind bullcrap. I call it "mental enslavement" since they can't put us in physical chains, so they chain our minds instead. But I'll honest in that I'm being jaded AF.

@@loganwithlightsabers3051 True, but so was Steel(DC) with Shaq, also 1997.
Steel was barely watchable, and while Spawn was an okay movie, it had enough bad elements that everyone just decided to forget it and only remember the animated spawn show with Keith David.
(I'm not saying the Spawn movie should be ignored, I agree it was sooner then Blade,, I'm just saying it wasnt the breakout movie people look toward)
Blade was the first successful comic book movie with a Black lead, and the movie was almost universally liked. There was no absurd notion that someone black couldn't be a lead superhero 20 years ago when Blade came out, Blade and Blade II were financial successes and Blade has a large cult following, so the MCU was basically gaslighting their audience .

Eric didn't even have that good a plan, what if T'chala just decided not to take his challenge, what then?? He went to Wakanda alone with no reinforcements. After killing all the allies the movie gave him.
T'chala is aware of the pain of having your father killed for reasons that have nothing to do with you, and the burning desire for revenge, which is what drove his actions in Civil War, I wish the movie could have given him a shot at a heartfelt conversation with Eric about how revenge would consume him the same way it once nearly consumed him.
T'chala meets his cousin and decided immediately that he hated him, he couldn't see past all that anger to see a scared and hurt little boy who just needed to be told he was right to be angry. But again he is angry at all the wrong people, the one person responsible for his father's death is dead already why is he still angry?
Problem is, our villain is either stupid or unreasonable, because all that happened is that his father was killed and so now he is mad at, I guess white people (and their children), who by the way weren't responsible for his father's death. T'chala as a side character in civil war had a better story than the main villain in Black Panther.

He worked hard, no doubt, however, anywhere else in the world and he'd be screwed, specially if his dad took him to any Wakandan neighbour countries, or asia, or south america, and Tchaka killed him there. It’s exactly why I absolutely loath Killmonger. He’s not revolutionary fighting for his people or symbol of the black struggle; he’s petty, selfish, vindictive, genocidal psychopath that wants to watch the world burn for perceived sights against him that aren’t actually there.

T'Challa staged a cup d'etat against the rightful king of Wakanda. We should not forget this. T'Challa is a usurper. I know both the film and the fans tries to convince us that no, Killmonger technically never won, but he did. And you know what. That's ok. That's what the movie should have been. T'Challa losing the throne legitimately. He and Wakanda is all about the importance of tradition, all the way through. That makes T'Challa and other characters not really being characters: they don't make their own choices and decisions, they just adhere to the traditions.
I think that it's good that when Killmonger wins, all these people (his family and closes friends) claiming they're all about tradition doesn't accept it. They should, their morals tell them to revere the traditions, but they can't. Same with T'Challa who have to accept that he has to break traditions and honor their culture to stop a dangerous man even he has the right to to it. The stuff about "he was never dead so it's ok" should only be used as a "History is written by the victors" afterwards to downplay the coup, but T'Challa and his family should know that he is an usurper.
This would do two things: 1. T'Challa would see that while traditions and culture are very important values, sometimes you can't just depend on them, you have to break them and make your own decisions. Character development. 2. T'Challa would always know in the back of his head that he overthrew a rightful king and stole the throne, and the movies and stories could use that in the future to make him doubt himself, his decisions, and is he really a good person.

And the story itself is just...entirely standard.

  • @grahamhill676
    @grahamhill676 Рік тому +8

    Okay so a few points:
    1. i think Civil War made T'Challa a little soft and weak. His father had just died and after engaging with foreign powers he managed to forgive his killer(s). I imagine it was quite a taxing experience. To finally be home is where he can relax, and not have to be a brooding mysterious warrior-king all the time.
    2. He HAD to accept the trial by combat. You can't have royal bloodline with a legitimate claim sitting around whilst you've barely been King yourself. One who also brought the #1 most wanted man to justice on entrance.
If he didn't deal with it then and there, he'd be spitting on tradition and rights, and he'd face more problems down the line. The fact that Erik could build a loyal army immediately AFTER killing T'Challa will tell you how easy it would be for him to sow dissent or start a coup years down the line.
    3. Technology and Wakanda. I think that's literally the point, not bad writing. They use an amalgum of super duper tech and "primitive" tech. It shows the folly of their society. Why does T'Challa accept the duel? Why does Wakanda do duels to decide who is king? Because tradition is their downfall. They're a society built upon tribal/medieval systems with potential for great power.
    That's a massive theme.
For comparison, the iconic British Guard (the Queen/King's guard) regiments stationed outside Westminster still wear bright red uniforms with no body armour and huge, bearskin hats both hot and heavy. They're entrusted with the safety of our monarch, and they're trained soldiers, but they still stick to tradition at their own cost like say, the Dora Milaje (or whatever Wakanda's guard is called).
    4. Why not share their tech? Again, a MASSIVE theme for the BP movies. Wakanda is protectionist and isolated. They do not trust foreigners with their tech. T'Challa didn't even trust the Avengers, he simply used them for his means in Civil War. Vibranium is what makes them powerful and they're not going to part with it for any reason (its implied that stark was given wakanda tech for his suit in infinity war btw). This plot point ties in well with Erik's motives. You could literally argue the same with Tony Stark. Dude has invented free and clean energy with the arc reactor. So why do people still live in poverty? Why is he not giving away his technology to everybody? Same reason. Its power and its dangerous which is why he told the gov to stick it up his ass.
    5. T'Chaka might have had unseen issues that required him to "maintain the lie". Not only would it sully his name, but Kings are not always safe. This is a tribal society that functions on blodline & "might is right". You only have to look at history to show us that kings that are not popular with the people do not last long. Him killing his own brother might've been seen as him knocking down a rival or could've sowed seeds of dissent. Monarchies are complex and full of bloodline technicalities that have resulted in countless genocides and Civil wars.
Granted, this could've benefitted from some better writing/exposition.
    Agree:
Yes, the CG sucked ass. Some of the anti-west themes are so on the nose its annoying. Erik had some decent motivation but basically boiled down to just being an angry racist who conflates skin colour with culture. His motivation was kinda whack, and the amount of people calling him "not bad" or justifying his planned genocide are shockingly high.
And whilst I'll admit it has plenty of issues with writing I still think you're harsh on some of these points I've numbered.
Idk how (actually i do) this got liken 90% on rotten tomatoes etc. BP2 was actually dogwater tho with all the issues of BP1 and none of the charm.

Especially since they took their clearly intelligent, patient, and ruthless while also compassionate character (the victim of the real atrocities your describing above) and turned him into a raging, petulant child with no real, intelligent plan for long-term success in overcoming those atrocities, both for himself and others. Kill Monger deserves better than that.

  • @krypticunlimited6925
    @krypticunlimited6925 Рік тому +5

I do agree that the movie is extremely overrated, but I have to disagree with your analysis of Killmonger's story. You brought up a lot of points about things that "didn't make sense", the first of which being the fact that Killmonger kills his girlfriend and Klaw. You said that this contradicts Killmonger's role as a sympathetic villain, but does it really? There are PLENTY of villains with sympathetic, even understandable backgrounds that still do bad things in spite of it. They are called sympathetic VILLAINS for a reason. Killmonger is not a saint, the movie never tries to portray him as one. The movie is portraying him as a villain who has an almost just cause but takes very brutal and violent means to get it. That doesn't ruin his character, it builds it. It is establishes him as the "do ends justify the means" character which they intended. He is sympathetic but also does bad things, which is a defining trait that most if not ALL symathetic villains possess.
Additionally, yes, what T'Chaka does makes no sense and was a bad decision, but T'Challa and the movie both make a point of this. The whole point of T'Chaka's bad decision was that it was idiotic. It caused Killmonger to grow up into a monster, and it caused T'Challa to question the integrity and leadership of the monarchy(note the scene where he literally yells "ALL OF YOU ARE WRONG" in the spiritual plane). T'Chaka was not wrong JUST to "push the plot", T'Chaka was wrong because that IS the plot. That IS the conflict. His lack of foresight IS what caused all these issues in the first place, and the movie makes a point of the fact that he was wrong for doing so. T'Challa spends the movie trying to write this wrong, and THAT is the central conflict. Characters making bad decisions or choices that make no sense does not mean the writing doesnt make sense, it just means the characters dont
I 100 percent agree that Black Panther has many issues and is one of if not the most overrated marvel movies ever, but I just wanted to point out that small issue I had with your argument on Killmonger's character arc. Great video nontheless.

I saw this movie in the theatre and I was seriously entertained. But it absolutely does not hold up, because the script, the character motivations, and the CGI are terrible once you notice it. It's a real shame, because there are so many good actors in the movie giving their best. It's a movie riddled by missed opportunities. Just one example: Claw is killed off for no reason in an ambush. If they really wanted to have him killed, let Killmonger fight him in his best gear. As it is, this buffed up guy kills off a middle aged man with one arm. The whole opening of the movie is pointless. Killmonger can just go back, show his tattoo, expose the dark past and the scandal, and challenge the king in this ritual fight. He doesn't need the vibranium axe. He just needs a plane ticket.

This just felt like a film made for people who never read a history book or travelled in their life.
Their depiction of African culture felt so shallow, superficial and forced, just for the sake of getting "mainstream" points, I felt like they were trying to show that Wakanda is a utopian society where everyone is always happy and gets along solely because they're traditional tribal Africans, or because they have a lot of wealth from the Vibranium (because money solves all problems of a society).
All ruling class interactions were soft as fuck and the writing very lazy in that regard. There is a ruling class that has 100% control over all the Vibranium in the world, the head of the state has strong control over the ruling class, and their loyalty, and all one has to do to become the leader of this state is kill the king in a fair 1 on 1 battle, more then that, the king can fight multiple battles in a row.
To recap, the city lives in harmony, and no one takes over the ruling class, it's just not believable with such soft ruling, it ruins all believability of this, the only reason given for this stability and harmony is because tribal Africans are just peaceful(?).
I mean try to think of this exact starting situation in a better written universe, for example game of thrones.

I don't know about that, I didn't like the movie, but when Endgame came out you couldn't say it wasn't the greatest movie ever made or people would threaten to kill you. It wasnt until three months later that 'honest trailers' came out with some pretty good criticisms that the sheen came off. I think marvel is pretty happy when that happens. The Black Panther was similar, I think for a lot of people it was just basically the 'representation', there was simply no admitting that black people were around except as less powerful sidekicks, which is what black people have been in ALL movies, cop movies, war movies, and War Machine is Iron Mans less smart sidekick and Falcon is CA's less strong sidekick. So representation does mean something, it happens when a rural based show comes on because people just like to see 'people like them'.
But to my thinking, it seemed almost racist to claim that while this society was technologically advanced, POLITICALLY they remained backward and even tribally savage. The 'lesson' is that they may have technology, but 'at heart' are savages who pick leaders by fighting to the death, they don't even have a MIDIEVAL form of government, its literally like how animals determine a leader. So that was pretty awful, but I saw nobody even mentioning it. When they go to war, well gee, of course you are going to make weapons that look like spears and have a war chant, something virtually no military would do today for obvious reasons. But again, its representation.

@@jedibrooks7235 calling the movie OVERRATED is about the dumbest thing and most cliched thing anyone can do AT THIS POINT.
the movie's NEVER been widely considered a masterpiece. it's inarguablly competent..and arguably, GOOD movie.
but, you cannot DENY that it created a cultural PHENOMENA..and a reason for people of color, especially black people, to finally get their "Hollywood blockbuster" treatment.
AND...the movie made a GAZILLION dollars worldwide.
and THAT's why it was nominated for Best Picture.
NOT because it's the gawddang best super hero movie.
NOT because it's the gawddang best movie.
man...Bohemian Rhapsody AND Green Book got nominated in the same year for Best Picture...the latter even WON it.

  • @harshdewangan191
    @harshdewangan191 4 місяці тому +1

Well maybe you are right on not liking Tchalla's character shift after civil war. But most of the things you mention here are things that you got plainly wrong. And I know I'm a lot late (as I recently found your channel but I'll still gonna answer them).
    1. "Tchalla becoming black panther after Civil war during the first fight scene with MBaku."
No. He was already a black panther before. What we saw on the movie was a ritual which is followed (most probably yearly) where a person of thier tribe can challenge for the mantle of black panther. That's why when MBaku challenged Tchalla he first drank herbs which makes his enhanced Black Panther power disappear. Then after the fight he was given the Black Panther herb again. So that's by his father died with that blast as he didn't possess the power of black panther.
    2. "Why Killmonger killed the pilot?"
He wasn't just any pilot. He was Klaue's man so he was a trained criminal/gangster or whatever you want to call him who would've shot Killmonger for attacking Klaue.
    3. "Why he shot his girlfriend?"
Klaue was holding her as human shield thinking he cares about her and it was an obvious "if you try to kill me I'll shoot your loved one" scenario. So Killmonger was just making him realise that he doesn't give a single f#ck about that girl. He just used her for his missions and was just making it clear that there's nothing Klaue can do to stop Erik. He doesn't have any leverage over him. And also it shows his character that he can go to any extent to complete his mission.
    4."Why he killed Kalue?"
Klaue stole vibranium from Wakanda ( which we saw in Age of ultron) During that process he killed many of the Wakandan people. He was the only criminal who did all these crimes against Wakanda and still roaming freely and not getting caught after many attempts by Wakandans. So Killmonger knew that if he bring Klaue to Wakanda people will take him seriously as the person who did something not their King has been able to do.
    5. "Why didn't he killed Klaue many years before?"
Because it isn't like he was with Klaue for all those years. He served in American Navy doing various off the book missions. He contacted Klaue regarding the Vibranium tool in museum which they rob at the start. You can assume most of these just based on their conversation. Then Wakandans knew about stolen Vibranium tool from museum. And Killmonger knew that if Klaue make any deal with another party to sell this item it will again bring Klaue in Wakandan's radar. Tchalla and Okoye went to prevent the same dealing and catch Klaue. Which they failed again. So Killmonger again proved himself more capable by killing Klaue and taking him to Wakanda.
    6. "How his lip tattoo was enough to get in Wakanda?"
It's not some tattoo that he made in some tattoo shop. It was the symbol of Wakandan's which they got through their genes (Now I don't know the logic behind it) which proved him to be Wakandan that's why he wasn't some outsider for Wakandans.
7." Tchaka didn't tell about his brother nor his kid to Wakandans."
That's because he killed his own brother. And he was taking weapons out of Wakanda and giving it to other black people to fight against Whites. He didn't tell people about killing him is just because despite being a King he still would've been questioned by Wakandans that whether he did it just to remain a king. And this would've been much more simpler and stresafree than explaining what he did and why he did to each and every one.
    8. "Why Tchaka left the kid?"
He wasn't a fully Wakandan as his mother was some outsider. Most of the people in Wakanda doesn't even knew that his brother is married. And Erik was sole witness to what happened to his father. So that's why he left him.
    9. "How Killmonger knew that specifically the guy (Okoye's husband) wanted Klaue?"
Klaue killed many Wakandans while stealing Vibranium. So every Wakandans wanted him including the King as he was the Criminal for Wakandans. So Killmonger's plan was to hand Klaue to any Wakandans. It was just a movie plot that Killmonger founf Okoye's husband first. (Okay, I don't remember his name.)
    10. "Why Tchalla accepts Killmonger's challenge?"
Because when he saw Erik's ring (which was the ring for Wakandan Royal family) he asked that old guy who was with his father about truth and knew what happened with Erik. So Erik was definitely a Royal blood so it was his right to challenge for Throne (as per Wakandan tradition) and he also challenged for mantle of black panther. Other tribe people accepted it as he was rightful heir. And Tchalla accepted it as he was obviously good at heart.
    11. "Killmonger's motivation?"
His dad saw black people suffering all over the world. So he wanted to help them as they had technology to make weapons in Wakanda which was prohibited (by Wakandan rules or whatever). It was Erik's dad's ideology to provide weapons to all black people and let them fight with the people who are opressing them. So Killmonger simply followed his father's ideology and as he saw Tchaka killing his father (I mean he didn't really saw it but he knew it) so he wanted to take revenge with Tchaka's family too.
    AND AT LAST
    12. "How did Erik managed to survive for that long after being stabbed?".
"Come on dude at the start of the video you were saying if King Tchaka had power of black panther then he should've survived the attack in which he died. So why can't Killmonger managed to hold on for 10 minutes after being stabbed as he too had the power of thay Vibranium herb." I know it was just to give him proper death scene. But if you were agreeing with one thing then the other thing isn't that bad too.
So yeah that's my take on what things you've understood wrong which made this movie and specially Killmonger less likable for you.
And those who've read this damn long comment Thanks 😂

Nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Critics' Choice- nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Golden Globes - nominated Best Motion Picture (Drama). AFI - Top Ten Films of the Year. Seriously.. the number of nominations and WINS this film had is absurd and should be obvious it was due to wokeness. The only ones I really get are for hair, makeup, costumes, production design, sound, musical score.. But best picture or screenplay? No way.
Winter Soldier, by comparison got less than half that many nominations overall and only like 3 wins. No nominations from the Oscars, Golden Globes, Critics Choice or AFI.
