- Hey guys!
This video and recreation of Madonna 1985 hit "Into the Groove" has been a labor of love.
After obtaining the original Multitrack master (I cannot share). I was able to dive in and recreate each sound, and arrangement using the same synths as the original song. With the exception of a MKS 80, ( BASS) TR-727 (I used samples), and an Emulator II (for the PIANO solo).
It took over a week to map out, arrange, record, and mix. It was a ton of fun learning how the song was made. It was recorded with a UAD Apollo 16 , and Luna.
I hope you enjoy ! Comment please!

Every now and then, UA-cam delivers me a gem like this video. Simply awesome, your efforts are fully enjoyed here. Thanks for making my day.
Thank you for the wonderful compliment. Thats what its all about. cheers to you man!
I love watching this over and over again
Really enjoy breaking the parts of this song, it reveals the serious work making this masterpiece
Im so glad you enjoyed it. Physical Attraction is coming next. Cheers!
Excellent work Jon. 😀
Thanks Alex! Cheers
This is excellent! I truly enjoyed that.
The greatest pop track ever created, by Madonna.
The rhythm tracks, particularly the synth bass, are gorgeous. But I like ‘Like A Prayer‘ even more.
Papa dont preach is better. But the bassline on into the groove is amazing.
Superb! very accurate
Thank you!
I remember learning this song for our cover band when it was still #1 back in the day.
That is awesome ! It’s a fun one to jam on
@@javd007 hey j. I used my DW 8000 for the main brass, D50 for the bells DX7llfd for bass. We had the Linn for most drum parts including clap and our drummer on acoustic and syn drums. Our bass player tried to keep up but seriously fxxxxd everything but it was our favorite all night. Lol
This is fabulous! Sounds just like the original! 🎹
OMG! Sounds so good on my mid 70's setup! Great work!
Lol awesome! That's the way to play this. I mixed it on vintage JBL Monitors and a 1982 Yamaha Pc2002m amp. Good job! Thanks for not playing on an iPhone lol
Oh yeah😍
Recreation with vintage instruments is lovely...
What an excellent recreation! ❤😊
Thanks Pablo !
Fantastic!! 🎉
Great Job!!!!
Luv it!
Great video!
I also did a cover of this with a covers band (well, duo\trio) back in the 80s. I used a Roland 626 and 606 for drums and percussion and MC202 and Yamaha FB01 for bass, Ensoniq Mirage for piano and claps and Korg PolySix for synths. We'd make backing cassette tapes that had drums, bass (when there was no bass player) and some synth lines. I'd play lead lines on the PolySix and piano and samples on the Mirage, and there was a guitarist\vocalist and sometimes a bass player. I'd make the recordings and cut the tape to the song length, then record it again on the b-side so we didn't have to worry about rewinding. Fun days, and quite a good earner, but not as rewarding as playing original material.
Ensoniq Mirage. Wow. I had one, a bit sorry I sold it.❤
@@deetgeluid mine ended up on a rubbish tip sadly. Back in the days before interwebs when it broke I couldn't find anyone who could fix it. One voice failed, and the floppy drive had one too many pints of beer from excessive gigging. Ah well.
@@TheDavidPoole My band ended up touring with Ernie Fields. He wrote the song “ Some Kinda Wonderful “ and sold it to Grand Funk for $2000. I did trade my Mirage for his IBM XT computer just so I could play Kings Quest a bit longer. lol
@@hurricane6014 sadly, my Mirage ended up as landfill. I loved that keyboard, but it had one too many beers (literally) and broke bown quite catastrophically.
However, Rhythmic Robot have a Kontakt instrument with ALL of the sample Mirage libraries sampled directly from a Mirage, so I'm going to get that to recreate some of the original songs I wrote with my cousin in the late 80s. So all is not lost.
Recreating old songs with original gear is an awesome idea! Too bad none of the people have all the studio gear but i hope othe people on UA-cam will be as talented as you are and we see some more!
You should check out Julian Croot. His covers are amazing.
@@oldendays9554 Cool! stupid UA-cam don't recomend stuff anymore, never heard about the guy! Thanks a lot, subbed!
@@djkanyonLuke Million 👍
Agree
Makes me kind of see and feel the process of the song, since only a few rare footage are stored throughout decades.
It's a great sensation to watch it here
Excellent job, and the gear.... wow!!!! Love it man
Thank you !
amazing job jon !!!!
Beautiful
Thanks man! it was fun to recreate, very rewarding.
Excellent job!
That was awesome. I love stuff like this. It's so great to see which Gear made = each Sound. oNe LovE from NYC
That's fantastic. I was singing along! (But as great as it sounded to my own ears, it didn't fool Shazam. The app reported "No result.") 😋
It did fool Shazam on my end. But I had to add the vocals to fool it. I wanted to add them in this video but I couldn’t due to UA-cam .
master piece video
Super SOLID recreation 🏆
Congrats, fantastic job!! 🔥
Bravo. C'est fidèle à l'original !
Great job!
So cool, I adore 1980s Electrodance music, welldone, thanks a lot! Ryan Paris's Dolce Vita instrumental please, if possible.
Ive remade that song several Times but this one IS Amazing
The best recreation
Thank You so much for this video! :)
Bravo
Vraiment cool
Awesome. This is what the internet is for ✊🏼
Stay tuned for another Madonna song recreated !
Dope re-creation... I hate I sold my Oberheim & Linn drum years ago
Luna FTW! Great playing too! Sub'd!
Isn’t Luna incredible ? I love it .
@@javd007 Best choice I made these last few years was to ditch pro tools and switch to Luna.
Very good! ❤❤❤
Thank you!
Great performance my friend 👍
Thank you brother!!!
Great! If you wanna post more recreations, I'll watch them!
You've done a very good job here mate, fair play! I'm having a crack at it myself from the multitracks but can't work out what that tom that sits low behind the snare was made with. Also the hi-hats are a bit of a mystery. I've tried a Linn LM2 and a 707 but cannot get it to sound right at all, any ideas? Fairly certain its not the DMX. Never realised the bassline was layered with a DX7, thought it was just the super Jupiter. As you say it's great fun picking these classics apart. Keep up the good work!
I suggest watching the end of the video and every sound is broken down. Hats are Linndrum, bongos , congas and other percussion is 707. Snare is a blend of DMX, gated Non Lin DMX Snare, and a backwards DMX Snare. This backwards snare is available for purchase fro=m Electrongate for your DMX. There is no tom layered under the snare
There's a preset on the Roland SH01a which sounds exactly like the squidgy synth off Madonna - Holiday.
Many synths can be used the replicate various sounds. Anthony Marinelli always mentions how he would have used whatever was available and we shouldn’t stress about getting the exact synths used on said songs but we all do for fun anyway lol
@@javd007 agreed, I used a Profit 600 to get that shizell forshizell!
Subbed! Good stuff.
Thanks man! Physical Attraction is coming next, stay tuned!
love your 4312 monitors
Thanks man 1983 model year. They are one of my favorite pieces of gear.
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
I don't have much knowledge about how songs in the 80s were actually recorded/sequenced so I have a simple question. For example, was the main bassline hook played just once and then sequenced (by some gear) over the duration of the whole song when they made it back in the days? Or was it played "live" for the entire duration of the song onto the tape or something?
Well that depended on the studio, the producer , and the method they wanted. The answer is both. In 1981-1983, more than likely played by hand. By 1985 or so , things were starting to changs, and more tracks were being sequenced by gear. This song, sounds sequenced to me, by listening to the multitrack.
😀
Nice! Curious about the effect on the snare?
It is in fact 4 sounds technically. However it is comprised of 3 tracks. The punchy sound is a DMX snare, DMX Clap, and another track which is a combination of the two (snare and clap), ran into the AMS RMX 16 NON LIN, then gated, and high pass filtered. Then the three tracks are blended to form one sound.
Thanks! So cool! Love that!
@@javd007 I always wondered how they made clap/snares so ear-splitting in the '80s, so that info has illuminated it for me. It's crazy how the clap/snare/gated verb at the end of the 4-bar drum pattern (the "clap-clap-clap") is actually a hook in its own right, when on paper it's a bog standard drum pattern. It's kind of mindblowing that I could recognise this song (and the peerless 'Billie Jean') from the drums alone, when they feature very "normal" patterns. '80s snares and claps are the best!
Very close, the closest recreation I've heard, but it still sounds too polished, especially with the You Can Dance extras thrown in. The demo version used in Desperately Seeking Susan was just not this crisp and clean; it was raw, edgy, just a sound that is not heard in any of the released versions or even the demo versions found on You Tube. On my playlist is the version from the movie, it's shorter, but it's the only one that has that authentic sound.
Thanks ever so much.
I'm so used to hearing the piano solo that (I think) was first on the 'You Can Dance' remix LP (1987) and the re-edit on the Immaculate Collection CD that I was kind of shocked when I dug out the single and found it wasn't on the 1985 vinyl. The original single (as used in the movie) sold about 800,000 copies in the UK without the piano or the 727 agogos. The weirdest 'Into The Groove' fact, however, is that in America it was a B-side, but in Britain and Europe, we all went completely mental for Madonna in August '85 ("Holiday" went back up the charts to number 2 at the same time this was top of the charts).
@@AutPen38 Yes, that piano was added to the You Can Dance remixes. Personally, not a fan of it. Into The Groove was a B-side to Angel here in the US, but eventually was released as a single after it was realized it was not at all "B-side" material. I never understand why they do different things in different countries, the UK got it added to later pressings of Like A Virgin, in the US, no.
ILL BE WAITTTIN,😊
Pretty close! Bassline during verse is a bit different.
It is actually correct. I have the multitrack, and every note is exact, even lines up on the grid. Its identical. I used it to dissect every note, sound, and part. There at least 4 versions of this song that I know of , and it's possible there are different takes used.
I have the multitracks as well. its wrong. @@javd007 and I specialized in ear training in College.
I'll do a version of the bass and link you. @@javd007
@@javd007you are correct. The one used in the movie Suddenly Seeking Susan; for example, is one of the different versions.
@@joshuaowens4797 Yes , lol Believe me , I did my homework on this song . I studied it so much . I never want to hear it again lol!
🔥 so the original bass was what ??
It was a MKS 80 doubled with a DX7. The track is listed as JU-80. Close listening reveals the DX7 high passed and layered with the bottom of the MKS 80 in unison mode. I was able to get it 95% identical with my blend of Jupiter X and DX7.
@@javd007 crazy how minimal it is ..but the sounds and how they all work together along with maddonas voice which isn't even that great tbh but has great energy as well as the synths
The trick: a good song
0 db missing?
@@monicavantusso1039 sorry ?
Didn't know they had an MPC and Jupiter-X in the 80s, and even a DAW with plugins 😎
The MPC is just triggering the TR-727 samples , which are very low in the mix . No midi. The Jupiter X is simulating the MKS 80 which I don’t have. I record digitally , but use only plugins which replicate the effects used back in 85. Mainly AMS rack effects and Pultec EQ.
Have a day off. Great video.
Great keyboard playing, but I sort off mis Maddy.
Same .
Clickbaiting ppl with "Recreated using the same gear!!" when you're literally missing the main bassline synth AND the main solo synth? Nice!
1:11 The video and the album version definitely don't have a 727 quijada at the breakdown. That's from the Shep Pettibone Remix.
I’m sorry you feel this video was clickbait. The bassline is two sounds , I have a DX7 which is half of it. The Jupiter X does a pretty good job emulating the MKS 80 for the other half. I don’t have an emulator II but the emulator only plays for a few bars during the piano solo. So, In fact , the quijada does play throughout the entire track , however it is very low in the mix. I have the multitrack and it’s all the way to the end , I made sure every sound lines up with the original song . There are quite a few versions of the song , I based it off the multitrack that I have. Which is not a remix. My multitrack is missing the vocal chops on the emulator. It’s quite bare . So I don’t believe it’s a remix.
@@javd007don't stress it, I enjoyed it and the gear was easily close enough
I also thought it was a bit clickbaity as it is not the same gear, only a part of it, but it was fun nonetheless. The bell synth could have used some bitcrusher
There is no bit crusher, I copied the sound and remade it 1:1 from the juno 106 multitrack thats the sound almost exact as it was on the recording. Also, clickbait , how so? its missing half of the bass sound (though i was able to get it exact with the jupiter ) and the piano solo sound. thats it.@@aceaudiohq
@@javd007 who gives a shit what they say mate it was awesome :)
Depressing all this gear we own and cant write anything decent
