Sonicstate was the first place i dipped my toes into the online synth community in the mid-90s...Thanks to Nick and the crew for being so good for so long!
Awesome idea, about the interview. We need to wait for more like these? Maybe Gaz William, Loopop (hands interview), Moltem, DivKid, The Crow Hill Company, Oora Music, Sarah Belle, Mylar melodies, Djs, Producers, etc. Love the crossover format, was a great idea Cuckcoo!!!!
Nice video, the history of Nick, been listening to him for 14 years when I tuned into his YT channel review of the Roland Gaia. Listening to Nick all these years on Sonic Talk he was always referencing his past in all parts of the audio industry, now I have a better understanding where he's coming from. Very interesting. It's been a long journey for all of us who've been recording musicians for over 50 years.
Great interview by two jolly decent chaps. Similar lead in to synths myself. Oldfield, Jarre and Tangerine Dream. The latter seeing them live in 1986 (and a few times Jarre and Oldfield) blew me away. That was the moment I decided one day I want to do that. Btw - George Harrison released a 1969 album Electronic Sound of Moog modular experiments. I have it on vinyl.
Long overdue interview. Great video, kudos! My only critique is, there were no screen captures, as Nick was talking about all the vintage synths he owned, it would have been nice to see what he was talking about, while watching this video. Cheers and happy New Year!
Great to see two of my favourite people getting a jam on .. Both of you you have been really influential and inspiring to me as I start my journey( all be it a late start)into the world of electronic music Happy & Healthy 2025 to you all 🎶❣️🎶
I think the first videos I saw from him were the Micro korg review and a very old M-Audio portable recorder if my memory is correct. Used to listen the podcast religiously but ended up realising I just couldn't keep up with the podcasts as well as the gear.
Great interview! Always wanted to know more about Nick's background and how he built up his deep knowledge. Not sure that the D110 was the first multi timbral synth though? I have the ensoniq esq1 which was released in '86 which can do 8 part multi timbral albeit with only 8 available voices.
Who didn’t know about synth punk in the 80’s? Tangerine Dream and the guys who had Moogs and Buchlas etc. I’m not even going to start a list. We had our Prog and pop and Bauhaus and Roxy, Bowie and and. Lots of digging left boys and girls. I had a sampler and a Pro One, DMX, Atari, 8 trk reel2reel in the mid -80’s and I played in bands called … wink wink.
Not sure if you want to edit the info on the video, as there are some pictures of artists mentioned, but it is showing Jean-Michel Basquiat, when I'm sure that should have been Jean Michel Jarre, interesting chat nonetheless
What a lovely duo! Also a blast hearing that Cuckoo started with Amiga tracker and m1 as first synth like I did. :D Are those modules anywhere on the internet?
EPS and ESQ-1 and the built in sequencer. I’d already been having singing, piano, guitar, bass, drums and woodwind lessons. Synths are my last choice these days. Learn music theory and one day boom -the orchestra. The album by The Boss was called “Nebraska”
Nice Ending's Impro ! We should not leave you play music all the afternoon, we'd get a tube or a classico ! Happy new year you both ! Greetings from Bretagne, France ;)
yeah, thanks, guys gr8 informative chat sharing knowledge and experiences!! been subscribed to you both for a while really appreciate your demos of gear & you know you both have to do a pt 2 with less talk and more spontaneous SYNTH JAM ooh yes please have a musical, creative 2025 gents thanks again always inspiring 😊😇🍺👍
The best synthesizers are as follows: Moog modular (IIIC, System 55), Minimoog, ARP 2500/2600, Yamaha GX1, Oberheim Eight Voice, Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, Fairlight CMI, Roland JUPITER-8, Elka Synthex, NED Syncaliver, Oberheim Xpander/Matrix 12, Yamaha DX7, Kurzweil 250, Akai S900, E-mu Emulator II, Casio FZ-1/FZ-10M, Kawai K5, Ensoniq EPS, Roland D-50, Korg M1/T-series/Wavestation, Akai S1000, Kurzweil K2000, Yamaha VL1, Korg Prophecy/Trinity... and then Clavia Nord Lead came out to single-handedly stop synthesizer development. We've been stuck with "virtual" or analog saw/square waves/cutoff/resonance knobs twiddle ever since.
The Nord Lead was like "jab, jab, jab", then the JP-8000 was like "Uppercut!" and the Acess Virus was like, "FINISH HIM!!" Alesis Andromeda was the Pat Metheny of analog synth... was it the last of the old guard, or the first of the new?
So we’ve only been ‘stuck’ with virtual/analog knobby synths since the late 90’s. Guitarists, bassists, drummers etc etc have been ‘stuck’ for a lot longer.
Roland started in Bristol but the Mandela effect changed that for me for some reason I clearly remember it starting there and after 808 and 909 fail it was sold to acetone why would a Japanese company ever be named Roland they just picked the name outta a phone book sure oberheim moog Dave smith Roland was the name of the inventor but I’m crazy everyone says
Thanks for the chat, was fun - happy new year everybody
Really enjoyed this! Happy New year!!
The legend himself - happy new year!
You’re the man Nick 😎🤘 You are a priceless individual. I owe you many thanks 🙏
Jarre opened me to it too. 51 yo now. Love bleeps and bloops. Ty for sharing yourself.
For those who don't know: Nick Batt had a huge hit in 1990 with DNA feat. Suzanne Vega - Tom's Diner.
Wow! I had no idea - thank you!!❤
That was a really big hit back in the days. Cool!
I was looking for this! Hope it’s mentioned in the vid.
Wow that was Nick!?! I loved that remix of the tune , cool
He's also the guy behind Goldfrap's strict machine, PWM and all
Nick is very humble. He didn’t even mention his work with DNA on Tom’s Diner with Suzanne Vega, or his work with Goldfrapp.
Just two bros enjoying synth. That is a great start to the year.
Sonicstate was the first place i dipped my toes into the online synth community in the mid-90s...Thanks to Nick and the crew for being so good for so long!
Same here. When looking for my first synth in the early 2000s I went straight to Sonicstate and learned so much hanging around the forums…
Ohhhh yes! My two favorite people on youtube on the same show ! Happy new year 2025!
❤️
This is the collab the world didn’t know it needed.

Awesome play out gentlemen. Thank you both so much!
This was a real treat, thank you for the collab.
i’m glad Depeche Mode was mentioned within the first minute. The beginnings were an exciting time ,

Happy New Year to both of you. Nice to hear about musicians living the scream.
happy new year everyone, love u Cuckoo and mr Nick
Happy new year 🎉🎉 amazing start with the both of you reunited in a video 😊
Thank you so much! 😀
There better be some PWM in this vid
Love this episode, two of the finest creators and lovely gentlemen. thank you
So happy to watch this. The two most genuine & legit. Happy new year 🙂
Love you both guys, great to see you together
Nick is a legend. My go to for all synth reviews , although there not been as much of late.
That was wholesome and relaxing to listen to. Thx!
Great way to start off JAMUARY2025!
it's our favorit Nick Batt ... Happy New Year to both of you

I love the idea to interview synth nerds. Great call! More please. Would also make a great podcast, just saying…

Great stuff men! Nice format and power to the music.

What a great interview to start the year. Merci 🙏 😊
Brilliant thank you for bringing this

LOL awkward conversations with musicians volume 1. Hilarious.
what a great duo. thanks for the video
Happy New Year to you both xxx Lovely interaction
Florian pilz’s hero
Think the Bruce album Nick refers to is "Nebraska".
yes, I think that was it!

Two titans of synth youtube - what a great video!
Collab of the year
We’re only one day in! 😂

Awesome show🎉
Shoutout to Sonic State The Gas Station forum from way back in the 90's
Lovely! Cuckoo is a great interviewer.

This was great to see two kings
Awesome cross-over! (And I am not thinking of fading or modulation.)
Awesome jam guys! The udo sounds great
enjoyed this so much !! 🌟
Very nice interview 👍 and some lovely synth noodling afterwards 👏
Fantastic -- great video!
The original synth tuber
Couple of legends!!!! 😎
Best interviews are the ones you shoot 3 times.
Two giants of the scene. Fantastic.
Fire jam at the end 🔥🤍
Nice 2 see you together. Great
Well I've been in the same room as you both before so nothing new right? 😁
Kidding. Will watch in a bit :) looks fun❤
This is Awesome!
Great format
Helt nydelig! Endelig gjorde noen dette intervjuet her!
Nice Ending's Impro ! We should not leave you play music all the afternoon, we'd get a tube or a classico ! Happy new year you both ! Greetings from Bretagne, France ;)
That was really interesting . Nick is such cool person
Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, Here Comes The Sun… Moog solos.

Thanks. Consider part two the video we made on @sonicstate where it's mostly jams, and only a few chats in between.
Right on. Two synth nerds talking about synths. Make more.
There'll be pwm in this video? Please!
this is a syntheziser master,too !
The arrow on the thumbnail should point to the left because everyone knows who Nick Batt is. There are quite a few memes about him.
‘Eating is nice’. 😂
Great stuff guys! The question is, I'm sure everybody is asking, when will you release the dates/venues for the "Cockoo & Batt Synth World Tour"?😃
Like Nick, as a kid I was also disappointed in the sounds I got out of the synths of the day.
Interview with the god! 😊 Jean Michel Jarre and Depeche Mode, obviously. Genetic, exactly! ❤
Love the Steve Davis moment :)
👑
No way you play snooker @@truecuckoo ?
What happened to Russ from protools expert??
Eating is nice 😂 I felt that.
I love eating too! Eating and sleeping. 🙃
LEGEND
Nick is too humble, he's had some hits: Tom's Diner, Strict Machine, Ohh la la.
Is this a crossover episode
nicely done gents

5:37 is Rick Wakeman’s story of the minimoog he bought from actor Jack Wild
Yep, bought not given.

I agree with you on being stuck.
but I didn’t know that the nord lead was responsible for this.
@@hermask815 It was. Clavia caught everyone off guard. Roland and Yamaha immediately followed up with JP-8000 and AN1x, respectively.

So we’ve only been ‘stuck’ with virtual/analog knobby synths since the late 90’s.
Guitarists, bassists, drummers etc etc have been ‘stuck’ for a lot longer.
What would really set this off is a surprise visit from Gaz, your brother from another mother 😅
He was at band practice!
What is the synth? Can you put chapters on the video?
mccartney ii - temporary secretary etc . check it out guys .... 1980
what are the synths you are playing please?
Udo Super gemini and super 8 I'd had said :)
@ Thanks 🙏
Love this ❤
what synths?
Bath is awesome!!
Love my Super Gemini.
