Guinness didn't do the testing themselves. It was independently verified by Winthrop University in South Carolina.
True science is verifiable, repeatable, and subject to peer review. What was the methodology? Where's the hard data? Publication and peer review are integral parts of the process. Without those, it's literally taking them at their word, as if academic institutions can't be bought.
@@NomaD_203 - That's a pretty silly take. Ed Currie doesn't have the wealth to buy a university even if it could be bought, and to be honest--as much as people in the pepper community care--this kind of science probably isn't important enough to have multiple sources working on verification.
The source of this data and the length of time spent on verification seems reliable, and people questioning it says more about how they feel about Ed Currie than it does about the science.
@@40Seche could inject some extract in the pepper tho
@@40Sec Ed Currie might not but Guinness does, and they both have a lot riding on it. I'm not even suggesting the the entire institution was bought, but individuals can be. Regardless, as a working scientist, I can assure you that science isn't really science until it's peer reviewed at the very least, and replicated for good measure. You can't say science proved Currie's claims, or that the data is solid when there is no data and absolutely no proof of the claims made, at all. I don't really care that much on a personal level, but I'll believe it when the papers, methodology, analysis, and actual results are made public.
@@NomaD_203 Winthrop is a reputable school
Very Well Done Shaun! Several valid points presented, especially as to pod heat verification. Marketing can reveal several tactics to promote a product. The best promotion of all for this conversation is of course to obtain seeds directly from the source. Well we know the conversation the non availabilty presents. Yes I have been watching your seed shop. Wonderful productivity from the seeds I purchased for this growing season. As you may imagine I am looking forward to that wonderful special kit that you offer. Stay Spicy! -Bob...
I love the spicy community and the amazing people I have met or follow here on youtube, so let´s not give the trolls & keyboard warriors too much attention - that´s what they feed from. Congratulations to Ed and thank you for your honest view on the subject. I can´t wait to taste that pepper in a sauce!
"Currie said he has learned from the business mistakes he made with his first Guinness record winner. He didn’t legally protect the Carolina Reaper name and let others have its seeds, grow the peppers and use them to create hot sauces and salsas."
Yet he still managed to retain the fame and leverage that to grow his business. Remember. Keeping the rights to print "Guinness World Record Holder" is like having the worlds most expensive subscription to Disney.
Thanks for your even-keeled fair take. Your thoughts are always appreciated in our community!
Well Said Shaun . Hope t get these seeds you mentioned in the video. I did buy some seeds if you want to hold off sending until these are avail that is ok as well :)
Who’s going to eat it has anyone eaten it yet ,have you tried it how do you test the hotness of these peppers regards des
i watched the ed curry vid on pepper x, he had a few real chilly heads on it . they tried the pepper and i never seen anyone cry so much and they said it was hotter. feels like 3 times hotter. he sat on the pepper 10 years to grow it out.. sad reg people will never know
I have a question 🤔 I've heard the primotalli is hotter than the reaper, that the 7 pot is hotter as well, are the other 2 peppers tested by Guinness to prove this? No dog in this fight, just curious if science can prove this.
If someone buys seeds from some shady web, thats their own fault. And while I agree guiness world record is not entirely unbiased, I still thing it is great succes and Im really happy for Ed and his team. I love his enthusiasm. I got into chillies when the Carolina Reaper became the hottest chilli and then I few years later I found your channel for which Im really gratefull. Still, I would not even dare to try the Pepper X :D
Hi, I have a question so… I have about 38 Aji mango chillies i grew this year is this enough to make some chilli sauce and how much can i make
@@Kia-qo7nd sure, that's more than enough to make some sauce. You could ferment them. Or just make a basic cooked sauce. Blend them together with lemon juice, salt, garlic and cumin. Then simmer for a few minutes before bottling. Can use vinegar instead of lemon juice if you want.
Thanks for all the info. I live in Argentina. Some of my chilli plants are 5 years old. Planted outside. Like trees. I also enjoy my spicy stuff as well as biltong and braai. We have wild indigenous chillies here. Will try to see if I can crossbreed these hot ones.
Wondering when it is available to south east Asia. I really hope I can grow this besides the Carolina reaper.
Pepper X formely known as Pepper Twitter
'stay spicy San Diego'
Me want Big Mustard Mama seeds. :)
Theoretically a chocolate papper x would exponentially hotter?
If you’re buying seeds when it has been stated they will not be available then that’s on you and not really a valid reason to say it is a bad move.
So my pepper seeds are not pepper x ?
Most likely no
@@ChilliChump oh OK
I lose a lot of respect for people who talk crap about Ed. I mean, if it weren't for him most people wouldn't have any thing to talk about.
😉
First world problems where people can't get seeds for a pepper, people wanting independent testing for a world record and debate over what pepper is the hottest.
💯🦁💪👍🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Grats Edd you have the money to pay guinness....
There's too much obsession with heat. We need to focus on flavour
I was expecting something about this. Solid view point; facts are important, as are being impartial and fair, well said. Love the hype and conversation this is generating particularly at this time of the season in the northern hemisphere.
Like the plug for your BMM seeds, we see you 😉
Love the overall message of being kind and fair as well as to enjoy the positive buzz this will generate for the spicy community 🌶️
I dont se ed as being partof the comunity at all we all share our pods and crosses for everyone to enjoy he just foes it for clout and to sell his sauce we have lots of great growers forget ed
If he makes sauces from it, not releasing seeds make those sauces exclusive which is a smart move and also shuts down fake seed sellers as people will know they are fake.
yep. he didnt get much from the reaper with its early release.
But without independent verification that the pods are in fact what he says they are, what are you buying? He could easily submit samples for testing and still retain the rights to his seeds and products made with the peppers. Fools and their money are soon parted, I think.
Ed so smart ,for not release the pod/sead.. this move will shutdown fake sead seller since up to date Pepper X only sold in his sauce only (it really smart choice to protect it creation .) Like reaper b4 he dint get much for it early pod and sead release ,it caused many fake seed seller and many victims..😂
At the very least he needs to make a 100% pepper x puree. The lack of availability will keep the door open for doubt that it is the hottest pepper. Otherwise its nothing more than a marketing gimmick to sell sauces and it will remain the hottest pepper no one can ever try.
@@Nefville all it takes is a pepper and some cash and anyone can try.
I agree with the growers choice to not release pepper X seeds. His seeds and his product so to speak. he should have the rights to his seeds so others don't profit off their work. Just my opinion.
Lol doing this video in front of a big mustard mama is actually very funny.
Guinness book didn't do the measurements for the pepper X validation, Winthrop University in South Carolina made the independent validation using specimens from the last 4 years of crops.
Sour grapes and this? Did you happen to post on Chase the heat too? Towing the company lines I guess.
@@SullyStuff Sour grapes? He’s literally just stating facts. Had Troy done a little research before posting this video he would have know that the testing was independently verified over several years.
@jeffreydw1983 who is Troy? By the way, I did do my research. When I say independent testing, I mean testing at a facility not chosen by Ed. The results of the testing should published, the actual HPLC printouts and testing methodology, sample size etc.
I was being a little facetious with my "who is Troy" statement....was just wondering why he thought I was Troy. I am friends with Troy since I interviewed him on my channel last year.
And I know the testing was done at Winthrop, I was just clarifying what I meant about independent testing....It shouldn't have been done at the University chosen by Ed, so definitely agree with you. Especially given that Ed is rather involved at the university. Thing is, even if the tests are 100% squeaky clean, if I were Ed, I would definitely get my stuff tested at a leading lab/university in the field of chilli peppers, and one that I had no personal interest in. Just so there was no doubt regarding the legitimacy of things.
Those mustard mommas do look very much like the pics of pepper x I have seen so your right mate there’s gonna be some relabelling goin on all over the place 🌶️
Fair play, I agree with all of the above. The man works hard to do what he does, he certainly doesn't deserve all that hate but, proper independent verification would go a long way for him to combat that hate and justify all his hard work, not only that, it would give us all confidence in his new creation. He did nail it with the reaper, you can't take that away from him.
As far as dodgy pepper X seeds are concerned, yup, there will be a whole new wave of scams unfortunately, I'm not sure how he will be able to protect his baby and keep it to credible this time. He got royally shafted on the reaper that's for sure, I don't know how he can change that, 🤞though.
Good on him, it's good to stir up the spicy community from time to time eh ! ?
Hats off to Ed 😊
😂😂😅 love the end brother you said it all when you closed with the big mustard momma! We are all thinking the same thing!
Love how you ended this mentioning BMM! ❤️😂😂. I mean congrats Ed for paying a company to give you an award... I mean.. Yeah ya'll know...
Greatest vid ever Shaun!!!
First, I have close ties to the growers/curators of Pepper X.
having disclosed that, the plain and simple truth is growers / sauce manufacturers are upset that they can’t get their hands on Pepper X.
therefore, they think best option is to discredit this achievement and are upset with Ed.
all-in-all, no honor among thieves.
Pepper X is the real deal.
deal with it
Mmm i feel like the big mustard mumma thing at the end was a little tickle dig there lol. Totally agree with what you are saying and keep up the good work mate.
What a tactful and apt way to state your opinions about this. I appreciate your candor.
A great video shaun. Been interesting reading about everyone's opinions about this pepper WR
As a retired EE, the huge natural swings in the Scoville scale ratings of a given pepper type, drives me bonkers. Just how accurate and grounded in actual science is the Scoville scale putting aside natural variations in the peppers? I've had some Peppers which gave me a perfect match of pepper sweetness and heat and some which tried to burn my face off and negated the ability to actually taste the pepper. I love the taste of any pepper which is not over powered by blind heat, but that's just me. Flavor would seem to me just as important of a characteristic as heat level or is this just a Macho thing?
If you look at the Guinness page on the record for Pepper X and do a little digging, you can find out how the specific lab used tests for scoville rating. For the reaper they dried the peppers, ground them, extracted the capsaicin from the powder using alcohol extraction and measured that to find an average SHU for the reaper. They tested multiple batches of multiple pounds each to arrive at the average. I imaging the pepper X rating would follow the same testing as they used the same university lab. This lab also rated the average SHU for Jalepenos at 10k SHU when most tests I have seen say 3-8k SHU, and the Habenero tested at 250k SHU where I have seen a range of 250-500k. IDK if that helps :)
Yes thank you for the information.@@ihartphoto
@@ihartphoto 👍👍
Extracting the capsaicin would defeat the point of testing. Do you have a link to this @ihartphoto?
@@ChilliChumpno that's how potency testing works in general. How would they know how much capsaicin is in the pepper if they didn't extract it? Originally they used to extract the capsaicin then dilute it with sugar water for chilli tasters to test and calculate scoville units based on how many dilution cycles it took until the testers registered no heat whatsoever. But now of course they have fancy methods and equipment to basically separate and analyze how much capsaisin comes out of a specific quantity of dried peppersand the scoville units are then calculated from that data
He got cheated out of money on his last pepper he deserves to get paid for these seeds
I just wonder, why that extreme hotness came first priority of growing chilies? I think it takes away, like finding those different tastes of chilies, in mid and hot varieties, for extreme hot, use those extracts, no taste only hot.
One more thing, why people are saying, green (not ripe colored) are tasting like grass. Not in my case, my Lemon drop, colected all from it, some still green, and took taste test of green one, really nice aroma, and when I strarted to chew it, first kind of nothing, like mild jalopeno, and then it hit,(OK I am not a chilihead) For me, good enough to dry and make mixed chilifakes with some ripe ones.
Thanks for your view mate ❤
As someone who has grown multiple Reapers in the past, I find the idea of a pepper closing in on 3 million Scovilles do be useless. Too much heat for anything food related.
While I agree that Guiness records need an independent verification, but recently watched the hot ones, where Ed got the sertificate, and his first sentence was that it was a team effort, and he seemed honestly humble in that regard. It's a shame there will be no seeds though.
Makes sense, its his own creation he probably juts wants as his own
Plus he'd loose all profits if he were to release seeds
Also Guinness said "Independently tested, verified" in the same episode..
You just gonna pass over that ?
Also, the tests weren't done by Guinness. They were done by Winthrop University.
@randompersonontheinternet8790 Guinness said they had the independent tests done. If that's false, someone (insert yourself here) that can prove different could step forward ? I'll wait, but I do understand cut throat business vs propaganda...Again (Insert yourself here)
Well played with the BMM Shaun. Very well played! 😂
I just have a small question. I love spicy food just like the next man but when is hot enough going to become a thing??
Oh wow, haven't heard about the announcement yet, really cool. I'll keep my thoughts on Ed for myself though ;)
*patiently waiting for ChilliChump to take the crown* 'o)
that could take a little while...but I may have a contender! Only at F3 at the moment, but its a scorcher
Remember the Apollo pepper😅 Not even close to Primotali.
Here's a disappointed grower here that knows the seeds will never be available. I'd be satisfied with a 100% pepper X puree but I don't think we'll get that either. The lack of availability will keep the door open for doubt and that's a mistake. My hope is that we will have a hotter pepper that's stable to take the record as soon as possible, something like the chocolate primotalii. Until then congrats to him for creating the hottest pepper no one will every try.
If it deserves mentioning fine. But if it's not going to be released to the public, then wtf are we talking about? Honest question, really.
As I understand Guinness uses independent labs to do a lab measurement of the Scoville units of the peppers. I believe they take a certain number of peppers measure and average that measurement across the batch. Anyone can have a lab do this and I believe Ed Currie even has that done from time to time. So what Guinness has done is have the lab test the Scoville units and this pepper has been recorded as having more Scoville units than any other pepper tested. It's not subjective and it pretty strait forward.
@@randompersonontheinternet8790it’s because Ed donated a lot of money to that lab.
@@GilaMonster971 I'd be interested as to what hard evidence you have on that. The reaper has been readily available for years for anyone to test and I haven't heard any reports against it. I don't care on any of this - don't have a dog in the fight. However lab tests aren't subjective.
@@TheMikeharris7 we are not talking about the reaper.
@@GilaMonster971 I'm not partial to Ed Currie as his company ghosted me when i bought seeds from them years ago and had 0% germination rate from multiple packs of peri peri seeds....but. You can't just say he donated money to a lab without naming the lab and showing proof. He has a relationship with Winthrop University where the testing was done, they tested the reaper for the old Guinness record, some marketing students developed the branding for PBPC as part of their classes, and their chemistry/biology students have worked with him on breeding projects and pepper x as well. He uses students for interns and he has a relationship with faculty and staff there. Is it an independent lab, no, but they published a document when the reaper got the record that showed how they did the testing. I imagine the notes from Pepper X will be released as well in time, as nothing would be proprietary unless they have an NDA with Currie.
What those tests dont show is, if they injected 💉 some or not, they only test scoville.
Not so straight forward, very one dimensional tbh.
I was interested in KSLS, in BMM, in Primotalii but I'm not interested in Pepper X hype in the slightest.
It was obvious from the beginning, that it's the marketing project, designed to make profit and basically sell only sauce (the only way to keep monopoly on "new variety", since Curie couldn't monopolize Reaper back in the day). Good for him, I guess.
But for me personally, this variety goes against the nature of pepper growing hobby. I don't grow Reaper for the same reason out of principle.
Nevertheless, seed selection goes on, inevitably we'll see more and more "hottest peppers in the world" in the future.
pfft. whatever floats your mind i guess.
@@catfishredneck88 it's good to be Ed's support fan, I guess. Enjoy your Pepper X products - after all, you are the target audience of all the marketing. 👌
I'm relatively new to the world of very hot peppers but I can't say that I understand why Ed is [polarising nor do I understand why he owes anyone to give away his invension.
It's not like Coca Cola is giving away their recipe so that everyone can make it in their home.
For instance, I invented a hot sauce recipe several people have already told me is the best they ever tasted. yes, I can make a video and give the recipe away for free or I can manufacture it, keep it a secret, and potentially make a lot of money. I certainly don't owe anyone anything. It is my call.
On the First we feast channel where he gets his diploma from Guinness, the person clearly says it has been verified by independent testers, whatever that means?
So when Guinness presented Ed with the certificate, made the claim "Verified by independent 3rd party testing" that's just being ignored?
Reaper held the record, yet we all know other peppers were hotter than the so called hottest in the world. What some don't understand, not all peppers grown have the same phenom or consistency from pepper to pepper. You can't test just one, two or three peppers. It takes several, from different plants to prove out a record holding claim.
Like doing a speed run, just doing it once doesn't count. You've got to prep, fuel up and do it again in order to claim that time.
Ed is a master, he knows what he's doing. I think in a few years he'll release some seeds. When Pepper Z is proven, ready fot market. Ed is gonna milk the cash cow for as long as he can, we all would.
I don't agree that the decision about not selling pepper x is a bad idea for the reasons you mentioned. It's official decision, so, everyone who will get fooled is, well, a fool. And a man explained why he doesn't want to do this, I respect that. It's good to have something in the legend area...
Agreed. A fool and their money are soon parted. It's not like he's selling a necessary medical device, this is a niche luxury item. Also I feel like this will just drive up the demand and the mystique around the pepper. Eventually he will release the seeds and he'll charge the future equivalent of like $20 and suckers (like me) will probably pay it.
i think its great. and ed is all about team and always humble and giving away tons of stuff. let the haters hate. i laugh at them.
I personally think Troy Primo peppers are far hotter than edds peppers are Troy Primos seven pot brain strain yellow are far far hotter than the reaper
Problem is that too many people are just assholes due to social media. Always talking shit cuz they know they won't get punched in the face. Funny I never run into these trolls on the street....
Hard to know whats real anymore.. ed gets the heavily criticized new world record, then next thing i see is people calling him a thief.. 🤷♂️
Well winthrop is public so I can just submit a FOIA request for the documents relating to testing.
I wonder if its possible to inject extract into the pepper prior to testing. How do they make sure samples are not tampered
Hopefully its not as "sweet" as the Reaper. Tastewise the Naga Jolokia is still my favorite.
I am a FOSS advocate. And that even translates over to my gardening and chiles. Very solid take.
Judging by reaper ,ed past mistake for early release ..i think maybe a years or 2 then he will release the sead..(ed still fell the pain from other benefit for reaper be 4..)
Facts count for a lot. I agree 100%. Greetings from South Africa boet 😂
Ed invented the Carolina reaper and people bought the pepper and grew the seeds and then started selling the pepper and Ed did not get a lot of the profit which he should because he's the inventor of the pepper. 😮
So I kind of agree with him I meant I would definitely would love to have some seeds of the pepper X so I can grow them at home but I agree you should get the profit.
I'm not interested in selling making money off of a product that I did not invent. It's also the reason why I will only purchase from him I'm not going to a third party website to purchase anything invented by him to buy.
He deserves the profit for inventing it

I’d love to review one. I can’t see how I’m going to get my hands on one though☹️
I don't understand what the big deal is? Its a pepper... that is hotter than peppers that came before it. Did everyone scrutinize the Carolina Reaper this way when it arrived? Sure, people want to make sure its authentic. I get it... but... is it that unbelievable that the guy who made the Carolina Reaper stabilized an even hotter pepper after 10 years with a team of people specialized to do exactly that task through plant genetics? You would imagine that IF you or anyone did something for 10 years+ that you could probably make some progress in said craft.
The controversy around the reaper was even bigger...and it was, and still is heavily scrutinised.
Much respect for your video, hopefully they do eventually get some other people to check out pepper X
What good is a pepper if it's so damn hot you can barely even eat hot is good but there needs to be flavor also
Thats a scary looking pepper ! It just screams HOT !
Hello
g'day!
I need to get your seeds, do you ship to Costa Rica ?
Hi there, yes we do!
What do u mean independent testing? Didn't world records do that?
Sucks that the controversy and internet drama overshadow what should be a exciting thing for all of us, and it doesn't help that Guinness serves as the arbiter with their pay to win scheme. Glad you took an even handed approach. I'd love to see all of these chili peppers independently tested so it can get back to being fun and not some he said she said thing.
The controversy and drama is what it's all about. Without that the hobby would be dead. It's like a fan comparing their beloved Chicago Bulls vs the beloved Boston Celtics. It's really no different when you think about it.
@@Mike_Baldwin to each their own. Reminds me more of reality TV. Not a fan.

Easy dont buy pepper x seeds. He hasn't released them.
Lots of breeders of other organism species don’t release specimens until they have stabilised the genetics and caught any interesting early mutations, this is especially important when breeding fish, as that next perfect pattern or colour morph might just be one generation down the road, that said, nobody is as excited about guppies as they are about the “worlds most” anything, let alone a record breaking pepper.
It’s no coincidence that you chose to stand next to that particular plant. The pictures and videos that I’ve so far seen of “Pepper X” show a rather striking resemblance to the BMM. Sure, a lot of peppers look a lot like each other, but with the history of the Reaper vs. 7pot Primo and the fact that the X and BMM come from the same two individuals, one can’t help but raise an eyebrow or two at this new record. The fact that seeds aren’t going to be released only serves to raise suspicion. I hope that I will be able to grow it someday as, regardless of who truly created it, it’s always fun to grow infamous peppers. Time will tell.. maybe.
I know it sucks I want to grow it so bad lol

Peer review of the claims would be so nice given the almost 1M increase in average scoville.
By doubting guiness and the testers from Winthrop, you are pretty much throwing the entire guiness book in the fire and claiming every record is fake in there. It’s a chili pepper. The guy already holds the record. What reason would they have to lie? 😂
The internet really gave voices to people who don’t deserve them. That’s why the world is in such chaos these days. Dumb people posting dumb things that other dumb people start believing. Scary.
Guiness doesn´t mean anything. It´s a marketing company where you need to pay a huge amount every year to claim your "record" . Many people doesn´t have the money to get it tested or even get things in this book and thats why we need something else than a expansive marketing company@@mikeye4075
