Roy Rogers was a kind man, a gentleman, a great singer, and very much aware of his influence on young children. Millions of kids all over the world wanted to copy everything he did so, he always tried to set a good example. I love this and will always admire him.
This really surprised me, I had no idea. The audience loved him. You know a good, decent, American hero when you see one. He and Dale were both people of faith and character in real life as well.
He's so steady in the saddle, he could be at full gallop and his head doesn't even move. He was in dozens of Republic cowboy movies plus decades of his own shows-- and never killed anyone. And he frequently walked Trigger up flights of stairs to visit with sick kids in hospitals. Truly the "King of the Cowboys."

One of the greats in our country. Nothing but class, character and kindness. People don't know it but not even trying hard....Roy had so many hundreds of millions of dollars he bought baseball teams and had many radio stations worth many many millions too. He lived a Godly life, in spite of so much tragedy like losing children and wives dying and still never gave up on God. I loved the man and what he stood for. May God bless him.

I had two hero's growing up. Roy Rogers and Mickey Mantle. Got to meet Roy once. Hiking with my dad in the hills above Chatsworth, CA and came up on a shooting range. Man comes up to us and asked if we want a soda. The man owned the range. It was Roy Rogers. I was in little kid heaven.
My Mom met him and Dale at the Roosevelt hotel while on her honeymoon in New Orleans. Mom watches his show daily on TV. Have a lot of respect for him as a man of strong faith. Dale I admire as well. They were an exceptional couple.

I’m 84 and he was my favourite cowboy so I’m guessing you are getting up there. My cousin who loved Gene Autry back then argued about who was the best Cowboy. I still say it was Roy, he smiled with his whole face.
I have a ton of Roy Rogers memorabilia, absolutely loved and adored that man and all he stood for. A great gentleman, a great American. I love the Dell Comic covers that he appeared on. Sat in front of the TV watching the Roy Rogers show in the 50's, he was in double features in our local movie theater for 25 cents, I finally saw him in person in M.S.G. riding Trigger at the Rodeo and got to shake his hand, I accidentally pulled his tan leather glove off and wanted to keep it, but my Dad made me go back down to the railing and when he rode around again, I handed it out to him, he winked at me, took the glove and smiled and said, "Thank you partner." Made my day forever.
I saw him at his museum in Victorville, Calif. in 1994. it was he and Dales's 48th wedding anniversary and The Nashville Network recorded for TV. He came out and shook hands, mine included. I was born in 1942 and had watched his movies on Saturday and programs on TV for years. I was tongue tied. All i could do was shake his hand. His hand was rough like a dried corn cob with no kernels on it. What an experience to meet a hero like that.
You get THIS kind of welcome, even after 60+ year of making Movies when you have MORALS, RESPECT and a LOVE FOR YOUR COUNTRY. Roy Still brings them to their FEET.

Agreed. It was more than an interview segment. Roy Rogers gave an oral history in the 80s of life in the Depression in the 1930s. And now we can watch it in 2019! This represents the best part of UA-cam!!

I was very lucky and met Roy when I was about 5 or 6 when he was on tour at a rodeo at the Boston Garden. He was sitting on Trigger before his apperance and reached down and shook my hand. I was over the moon for years, in fact, still am , in 2019.

@@Tonetwisters I very much agree,...although being as human as the rest of us,along with the trials He faced back then, yet It shows"He loved his Savior through it all"...the then ,Roy and Dale, really mentored to us all, in ways that, now looking back, took almost a lifetime for some of us to understand! ,...when compared to many of the other singers and actors on TV, I so very much appreciate the noted morals and ethics displayed by them and company during their life on the screen and off... as a very young fella, while watching them on our three channeled black and white TV set , white Cowboy hat on with play gun out, (and while riding on my trusty plywood riding horse connected to it's base by it's four metal springs) very hard!!! ... - , I remember, shooting my play gun (at the bad guys) - knowing always to do right in the process, ( I did not desire to hurt even a flee in my heart)...much later in life, after a short rebellion as a young older man, someone faithfully led me to accept Jesus as my Personal Lord and Savior, then (showing God's sense of humor) I,... entered Law Enforcement for about 10 years and also trusted ...Thank God for all of that! I was 11, and Roy came to the Waco, Texas Rodeo. After the Rodeo he rode Trigger around arena and shook hands with every kid down their. I did not want to wash my hand for a week. 💜
im 70 but i never met him but loved him and Dale and Trigger and every time i watch these clips i just want to cry because he had a huge influence on children especially and one reason America was so great....when you hear their stories you just know he and his family were so kind and they did a lot of appearances for children and hospitals .....great man, great father and husband.....and they are all gone and i miss them so much
Believe it or not, (for younger readers) movies actually taught good character traits in those days. In the last 30 years the movie industry has destroyed and mocked good character traits. Now perversion is acceptable and lauded, but old-fashioned values are called bigotry.

I met Mr. Rogers when I was about 9 years old. He got down on one knee and shook my hand and talked to me like I was the most special important person to him at that moment. I will never forget his beautiful blue eyes, his smile and shaking my hand asking me about me. He was the first person to shake my hand and later I became a real estate agent then broker and copied his hand shake.

It was obvious Dave was a real fan and sincere with his appreciation of Roy Rogers. So often with Dave, you get the feeling he mocks his guests, but not here.
Yes, that's true. Letterman could be an obnoxious twerp at this time of his life when interviewing guests. He shows he is capable of better things. I remember watching him interview Robert Morley who got quite exasperated at Dave and asked him, "Have you any education at all dear boy?". Dave had to chuckle at that.
Growing up in the 60's I took a lot of grief for having the same name as Roy Rogers, but I didn't care, he was such a popular character I felt lucky to have the same name.

Roy was my hero growing up. My gang all pretended to be Roy Rogers. Watched his show every Saturday morning. Roy and Dale were a class act. Genuine and wholesome.

The best reception I have seen given Roy was when he appeared at the CMA awards with Vernon Gosden....Randy Travis was there with George Jones and Tammy Wynette and was singing "Heroes and Friends" which was Randy's tribute to Roy. All of a sudden Roy walks out with Vern Gosden and the whole front row went crazy. These were young people, in their twenties and thirties, not the senior citizens you might expect...and you can tell by the looks of the women's faces that they were remembering back to the time when they were little girls and wanted Roy to ride up on Trigger and whisk them away.
When I need to go back to a time when life was simple, beautiful, I put on a Roy Roger's and Dale Evans movie. Watching their movies is like water to a thirsty soul. When you look at Roy he has what I call "smiling eyes" even if he's not smiling at the moment. That beautiful soul is up in heaven now with Jesus his Savior, Dale and Trigger. 🐎🇺🇸
Loved him all my life and I'm 71...Once at a teacher Staff Development, one of our senior teachers asked to speak at the beginning of a pre-school session. Mr. Beasley proceeded to lead all of us on a brief life story of Roy's life and recent passing.
My father deserted his family when I was 2 years old. A constant day dream of mine in the late 40s and early 50s was that he would ride in on Trigger and propose to my mother. She would hop on the back of Trigger and they would ride off to a church to get married..
I remember growing up & My Dad Taking me to the MSG rodeo to see Roy Rogers every time he appeared there what great Memories from Back in the Day Roy & Dale may they RIP & are Sadly missed by all of their Fans etc.
With this year, now 2019, 1983 is more than 35 years ago. Watching Roy Rogers with this video has made me realize all over again, I have lived in the very best of times. For me its been a good ride.
Amen Roger....I'm almost 80 and feel the same. We may have been poor but happy free and no need to lock doors. Kids played out until dark with no worry of harm. No theft ( we had nothing to steal) and never a murder in the news. In my entire youth only one death from crime. Now it's many every day . America needs Roy Roger types again on TV. Nearly every show its violence.
My all time favorite cowboy. Loved his costumes, his singing, and he had the smartest horse- Trigger. From the earliest years of my childhood- up until his final years- he was always the same; smiling, positive and decent. Happy Trails!
When I was about seven years old I wrote Roy Rogers a letter asking him to adopt me. I wanted my own pony, and a decent father. He sent me a picture. He was an amazing human being.
As a young boy growing up in Detroit I was a proud member of the "Roy Rogers Riders Club" and had my little Id card to prove it. He was most certainly one of my favorite boyhood heroes and I used to watch his TV program all the time.
Him and Gene...doesn't get any better than the way they both treated people and animals. His story about his first wife is very emotional. You can feel his presence just by listening to his words and demeanor.
I grew up in the fifties and always watched the Roy Rogers show with my two brothers. He was the greatest. I almost lost it hearing him sing Happy Trails with such a strong voice.
Are you kidding me? Not one person wanted to see 'Rodgers?' I guess no one remembers him now...but, as far as movies and television were concerned, R.R. WAS the "King of the Cowboys". He was truly in a 'class by himself'.
Okay...I hadn't noticed any 'dates' other than the 'air-date' of the show. Man...think of all the stories he could have told, given time to do it, and the right questions asked! I was never really into the Hollywood version of 'cowboys'...and even Rodgers himself was something of a fiction! (he more or less 'created' the 'Roy Rodgers' personae from his own idealized version of 'what a real cowboy should have been') He knew how to entertain people, and that's a certainty! And nothing wrong with that.( Clint Eastwood has said many times that Rodgers was his inspiration for 'Bronco Billy' and that the entire movie was based on Rodger's life and his 'Code of the West' as it should have been...that's quite a tribute!)
I have an excuse for the 'd'...a friend I grew-up with is 'Rodgers' and it's a 'no-brainer' to write it with a 'd' every time! (people frequently pronounce my name 'Night-ING-ale' and it drives me bug-shit!)

When my brother passed away in 2017, he had Happy Trails played at his funeral as people left the chapel . He was a hugh Roy Rogers fan. When I was young he'd let me read his Zane Grey books, found out yrs later they were 1st editions.
my mom saw him when he made a personal appearance at a movie theater in San Antonio Texas when she was a child during the depression in the thirties and remembers it as one of the greatest experiences of her life. She will be 87 this year. "Happy trails too you, till we meet again"..

Roy always was my hero in the fifths I had a Roy Roger's everything and loved them all there will never be such a wonderful man and a Super Role Model I used to go to his Museum in Barstow and met him several times.
I was managing the restaurant at Stallion Springs Resort just outside of Tehachapi, CA in the 70's. Roy Rogers stayed there a night or two and I, along with a couple of other employees, had the greatest privilege of speaking with him for probably 15 - 20 minutes one night after dinner with no one else there. Dale was sick at the time and so not present. He was exactly like the character he portrayed in his shows. One of the nicest of people and as far from a '"Hollywood"' type personality as could possibly be and still be a star. Amazing man and one of my favorite memories. I worked in the service end of the Restaurant Industry for about 10 years, meeting several movie stars during that time. Most were decent people. A few could only be described as self-privileged, pompous assholes. But the four who stand out, to me at least, as being some of the nicest people going are, in the order I met them, Paul Newman with his wife, Joanne Woodward, Henry Fonda, and Roy Rogers. All were huge in the Hollywood scene and yet were just nice, plain, humble folk when I spoke with them.
Nice to see another "Mr. Rogers" imparting wisdom and teaching life lessons to kids and adults alike! And the funny thing is David Letterman interviewed both Roy and Fred!
Roy was the first movie and TV star I ever liked and who was a really big deal to me. I'm 61, born in '57 - the year his TV show ended. And by the time I was 5, though Roy's movie days were long gone, his TV show's reruns were constantly playing on Saturday afternoons. And as TV was saturated with the popularity of westerns, this kept Roy hugely popular with kids.
Roy Rogers was to my generation what Mr. Rogers, (lovely day in the neighborhood), was to a later generation. From all accounts both were wonderful people in real life. RIP to you both.
These guys were amazing. They came in with their talents and smarts at just the right time and parlayed it into real estate and broadcast fortunes. True American dreams.

as a very young fella, while watching them on our three channeled black and white TV set , white Cowboy hat on with play gun out, (and while riding on my trusty plywood riding horse connected to it's base by it's four metal springs) very hard!!! ...
- , I remember, shooting my play gun (at the bad guys) - knowing always to do right in the process, ( I did not desire to hurt even a flee in my heart)...much later in life, after a short rebellion as a young older man, someone faithfully led me to accept Jesus as my Personal Lord and Savior, then (showing God's sense of humor) I,... entered Law Enforcement for about 10 years and also trusted ...Thank God for all of that! It was wonderful running into Roy & Dale at various stores here in Victorville & Apple Valley. We still miss them terribly.
I was 11, and Roy came to the Waco, Texas Rodeo. After the Rodeo he rode Trigger around arena and shook hands with every kid down their. I did not want to wash my hand for a week. 💜
im 70 but i never met him but loved him and Dale and Trigger and every time i watch these clips i just want to cry because he had a huge influence on children especially and one reason America was so great....when you hear their stories you just know he and his family were so kind and they did a lot of appearances for children and hospitals .....great man, great father and husband.....and they are all gone and i miss them so much

Believe it or not, (for younger readers) movies actually taught good character traits in those days. In the last 30 years the movie industry has destroyed and mocked good character traits. Now perversion is acceptable and lauded, but old-fashioned values are called bigotry.

I met Mr. Rogers when I was about 9 years old. He got down on one knee and shook my hand and talked to me like I was the most special important person to him at that moment. I will never forget his beautiful blue eyes, his smile and shaking my hand asking me about me. He was the first person to shake my hand and later I became a real estate agent then broker and copied his hand shake.

It was obvious Dave was a real fan and sincere with his appreciation of Roy Rogers. So often with Dave, you get the feeling he mocks his guests, but not here.
Yes, that's true. Letterman could be an obnoxious twerp at this time of his life when interviewing guests. He shows he is capable of better things. I remember watching him interview Robert Morley who got quite exasperated at Dave and asked him, "Have you any education at all dear boy?". Dave had to chuckle at that.
Growing up in the 60's I took a lot of grief for having the same name as Roy Rogers, but I didn't care, he was such a popular character I felt lucky to have the same name.
I'm a huge Roy Rogers fan...love Trigger and Dale Evans...Roy is a real folk hero.
It's amazing that Dave gave Roy sixteen minutes for an interview, and it was a great one. Broke my mom's heart when he passed.

Roy was my hero growing up. My gang all pretended to be Roy Rogers. Watched his show every Saturday morning. Roy and Dale were a class act. Genuine and wholesome.

The best reception I have seen given Roy was when he appeared at the CMA awards with Vernon Gosden....Randy Travis was there with George Jones and Tammy Wynette and was singing "Heroes and Friends" which was Randy's tribute to Roy. All of a sudden Roy walks out with Vern Gosden and the whole front row went crazy. These were young people, in their twenties and thirties, not the senior citizens you might expect...and you can tell by the looks of the women's faces that they were remembering back to the time when they were little girls and wanted Roy to ride up on Trigger and whisk them away.
When I need to go back to a time when life was simple, beautiful, I put on a Roy Roger's and Dale Evans movie. Watching their movies is like water to a thirsty soul. When you look at Roy he has what I call "smiling eyes" even if he's not smiling at the moment. That beautiful soul is up in heaven now with Jesus his Savior, Dale and Trigger.

Loved him all my life and I'm 71...Once at a teacher Staff Development, one of our senior teachers asked to speak at the beginning of a pre-school session. Mr. Beasley proceeded to lead all of us on a brief life story of Roy's life and recent passing.
And he can tell great stories all day.

My father deserted his family when I was 2 years old. A constant day dream of mine in the late 40s and early 50s was that he would ride in on Trigger and propose to my mother. She would hop on the back of Trigger and they would ride off to a church to get married..

Amen Roger....I'm almost 80 and feel the same. We may have been poor but happy free and no need to lock doors. Kids played out until dark with no worry of harm. No theft ( we had nothing to steal) and never a murder in the news. In my entire youth only one death from crime. Now it's many every day . America needs Roy Roger types again on TV. Nearly every show its violence.

My all time favorite cowboy. Loved his costumes, his singing, and he had the smartest horse- Trigger. From the earliest years of my childhood- up until his final years- he was always the same; smiling, positive and decent. Happy Trails!
When I was about seven years old I wrote Roy Rogers a letter asking him to adopt me. I wanted my own pony, and a decent father. He sent me a picture. He was an amazing human being.

As a young boy growing up in Detroit I was a proud member of the "Roy Rogers Riders Club" and had my little Id card to prove it. He was most certainly one of my favorite boyhood heroes and I used to watch his TV program all the time.
When I was a kid I used to love watching Roy Rogers, the king of the cowboys, on TV. Great memories.

I grew up in the fifties and always watched the Roy Rogers show with my two brothers. He was the greatest. I almost lost it hearing him sing Happy Trails with such a strong voice.
Are you kidding me? Not one person wanted to see 'Rodgers?' I guess no one remembers him now...but, as far as movies and television were concerned, R.R. WAS the "King of the Cowboys". He was truly in a 'class by himself'.
I just put it up, and so far it's received over 50 views. Give it time. :)
Okay...I hadn't noticed any 'dates' other than the 'air-date' of the show. Man...think of all the stories he could have told, given time to do it, and the right questions asked! I was never really into the Hollywood version of 'cowboys'...and even Rodgers himself was something of a fiction! (he more or less 'created' the 'Roy Rodgers' personae from his own idealized version of 'what a real cowboy should have been') He knew how to entertain people, and that's a certainty! And nothing wrong with that.( Clint Eastwood has said many times that Rodgers was his inspiration for 'Bronco Billy' and that the entire movie was based on Rodger's life and his 'Code of the West' as it should have been...that's quite a tribute!)

When my brother passed away in 2017, he had Happy Trails played at his funeral as people left the chapel . He was a hugh Roy Rogers fan. When I was young he'd let me read his Zane Grey books, found out yrs later they were 1st editions.
my mom saw him when he made a personal appearance at a movie theater in San Antonio Texas when she was a child during the depression in the thirties and remembers it as one of the greatest experiences of her life. She will be 87 this year. "Happy trails too you, till we meet again"..

dat42960 I saw Roy in Reserve La. in the late 50s in connection with the local theatre ..had the pleasure and privilege to shake hands with Mr.Rogers in the 70s as family friends owned several of the old Roy Rogers roast beef restaurant franchises ..One of the fondest memories of my youth still feel like a kid when I see or hear Ol Roy on the TV or radio.. Where in the Hell did America go .

Roy always was my hero in the fifths I had a Roy Roger's everything and loved them all there will never be such a wonderful man and a Super Role Model I used to go to his Museum in Barstow and met him several times.
I was managing the restaurant at Stallion Springs Resort just outside of Tehachapi, CA in the 70's. Roy Rogers stayed there a night or two and I, along with a couple of other employees, had the greatest privilege of speaking with him for probably 15 - 20 minutes one night after dinner with no one else there. Dale was sick at the time and so not present.
He was exactly like the character he portrayed in his shows. One of the nicest of people and as far from a '"Hollywood"' type personality as could possibly be and still be a star. Amazing man and one of my favorite memories.
I worked in the service end of the Restaurant Industry for about 10 years, meeting several movie stars during that time. Most were decent people. A few could only be described as self-privileged, pompous assholes. But the four who stand out, to me at least, as being some of the nicest people going are, in the order I met them, Paul Newman with his wife, Joanne Woodward, Henry Fonda, and Roy Rogers. All were huge in the Hollywood scene and yet were just nice, plain, humble folk when I spoke with them.

Roy was the first movie and TV star I ever liked and who was a really big deal to me. I'm 61, born in '57 - the year his TV show ended. And by the time I was 5, though Roy's movie days were long gone, his TV show's reruns were constantly playing on Saturday afternoons. And as TV was saturated with the popularity of westerns, this kept Roy hugely popular with kids.
He was such a wonderful role model for children . Sadly that is missing in today's world. Roy and Dale were the real deal!!
Roy Rogers was to my generation what Mr. Rogers, (lovely day in the neighborhood), was to a later generation. From all accounts both were wonderful people in real life. RIP to you both.
