I'm a member and have been my whole life but one morning I had work to take care of and didn't think I'd make it to church so didn't get dressed in my Sunday best and went to take care of my work but when I was mostly finished and only had one more errand to deal with Ifelt strongly that I should at least make it to sacrament meeting so I did even while wearing a hoodie and leggings and sure I felt a bit weird but no one made a big deal or bothered me about it and I'm just grateful I got to be there that Sunday.

As a very religious person, I find it confusing that people prioritize ease over truth. I totally understand "I don't believe X religion is true," but I don't think it's very mature to not follow a religion merely because it's challenging.

One thing about white shirts: The only statement is that youth are encouraged according to the handbook to wear a white shirt while administering the sacrament to prepare for the temple (and their mission...?), but even in that case you're not allowed to not stop them from having another shirt color nor telling them not to wear it since, at the end of the day, your salvation is not depended on a shirt color

James 2 apparently does not exist to you. I’m not gonna preach to you about how your going to hell and that I’m right and your wrong. Quite frankly because it is not that simple. Furthermore I am assuming you are a follower of the Lutheran faith I.e. most Christian denominations, because you are a firm believer in faith alone. Are you aware that more than 75 books have been taken out of the holy Bible during Martin Luther’s time and deemed “not canon” or in other words they didn’t fit to his beliefs. In fact he almost took out the gospel of James altogether as I just quoted because it in fact disproves this notion of “faith alone”. Martin Luther molded the Bible to fit his and your beliefs rather than fit his beliefs to the Bible. So yes I will “try as I might” because that is what is expected of us. And of course I understand I am a sinner, a daily sinner. I am addicted to sin and I deserve to burn in hell. But gods grace has saved us all and it’s up to our works, as preached by the apostle James, where we will ultimately be judged in accordance to God. First, Faith is a gift from God, in the midst of evidence all around us.
      How ever james
chapter 2. is showing the people of God with true faith, how to know if those that come have a true faith that saves or a false PROPHESION of faith that canot save.
So how do we know, if they have true faith or false faith BY WHAT THEY SAY AND DO , there works , the gift of faith from God works in what they say and do , so , a PROPHESION of faith without the WORKS of God in what they 《 SAY》about God and faith is how one knows the diference
Because faith without works is dead faith that canot save to the utmost, it's just a false PROPHESION of faith A LIE if you will . Fake it till you make it , or not.
This is what jesus's half brother is saying here, read James chapter 2 again and stop putting outside meaning into the text corrupting the word of God.

Prophetic preference not a commandment.

The answers about rules seem to boil down to: do what you want but there will be consequences. Which basically is saying in an obtuse way, that you have to do them. Getting a temple recommend is theologically essential for complete salvation. Yes you’re saved by faith but you only get into the crappy heaven where Hitler will end up “Telestial Kingdom.” I thought God loves all his children equally and that we are all equal before God. Which begs the question, why would God divide us in eternity? Three tiers of Heaven, and then sub tiers within each. That sounds a lot like a caste system of the dead, reminiscent of Vedic beliefs about reincarnation and getting placed in an appropriate amount of happiness relative to your past faithfulness to the law.

@@coalhouse1981 That quote (said over 30 years ago) is taken out of context, and Oaks even clarifies it in the PBS documentary. He says:
"I also said something else that has excited people: that it’s wrong to criticize leaders of the Church, even if the criticism is true, because it diminishes their effectiveness as a servant of the Lord. One can work to correct them by some other means, but don’t go about saying that they misbehaved when they were a youngster or whatever. Well, of course, that sounds like religious censorship also.
But not everything that’s true is useful. I am a lawyer, and I hear something from a client. It’s true, but I’ll be disciplined professionally if I share it because it’s part of the attorney-client privilege. There’s a husband-wife privilege, there’s a priest-penitent privilege, and so on. That’s an illustration of the fact that not everything that’s true is useful to be shared.
In relation to history, I was speaking in that talk for the benefit of those that write history. In the course of writing history, I said that people ought to be careful in what they publish because not everything that’s true is useful. See a person in context; don’t depreciate their effectiveness in one area because they have some misbehavior in another area - especially from their youth. I think that’s the spirit of that. I think I’m not talking necessarily just about writing Mormon history; I’m talking about George Washington or any other case. If he had an affair with a girl when he was a teenager, I don’t need to read that when I’m trying to read a biography of the Founding Father of our nation."

But that's a Christian (even just overall religious) thing in general, though most Christians ignore it because it's inconvenient to modern culture.

10:25 "but what if your personal revelation goes against what the prophet has counselled you"
Early on in the video you state that everyone is allowed to "question", yet your statement at 10:25 contradicts that sentiment. Your mindset seems to be that the prophet receives revelation for the body of the church, correct? Any time you set a leader up as receiving council for the remainder of the members you have a dynamic that discourages questioning at the very least. Just because there isn't a rule that specifically states "thou shalt not question" doesn't mean the culture isn't there. This is how the BITE model works. It's not about rules enforced by force, it's about the power-dynamic that exists due to deemed authority among the members. When people say "you are not allowed to question", they aren't trying to say you will be put to death or kicked out for questioning, they are referring to the power/authority dynamic that exists. Google and read about the BITE model.

At the end of the day, everything you do is between you and God. Everyone can receive personal revelation, but only the prophet and authorities can receive revelation for members and the church.
Think of it like this, if God needs 90% of his members to go on missions, he will instruct the prophet to instruct the people. He will handle the other 10% through personal revelation.

As a convert, I find that I might have more questions from curiosity’s sake than from anything else. I have learned much from my observations than any other form of inquiry. As an example, when I joined, I was told to wear what I considered my best. That has turned out to be a suit/tuxedo and is what I have continued to wear for church. Nobody has said anything derogatory despite it being slightly more dressy than other forms of dress that I see. If anything, I am told that I look sharp, that I look nice etc. Whether one of our young men passing sacrament saw me or not, he has worn a black suit with a bow tie (I can’t detect a stripe on the pants to determine if it is a tuxedo). Another young man does wear a tux only with a long tie, so overall our ward has a number of people who dress to their own liking and all of it is modest. I’m probably going to shock some when I wear a print shirt with my grey suit, but we’ll see when it happens. Overall the point I am driving at is that all of us might dress up, but we still do so with modesty I mind. I might be a bit over the top in my dressing, but it is my best and that’s what is important overall. After all church is not a circus atmosphere but a place to contemplate life and seek out a spiritual connection for questions unknown and known to help people become more complete as we’re supposed to. All rules and commandments are in place to help us along the path to enlightenment and completion.

They seem to think a rule of the Church is only such if the church will physically take away your recommend if you do it (or don't). However, in the Mormon church, council and advice ARE rules because punishments and rewards are assigned to them. Their perspective is like me saying "my daughter doesn't have to take the garbage out...I won't kick her out of my house if she doesn't..it's just advised so that she doesn't get grounded this weekend." In their Mormon view, taking the garbage out wouldn't be a rule...just advised. She's deciding to accept the consequences that follow her decision...to follow my advice or not...not me forcing her to take out the garbage. This is Mormon Think.

He was a convert to the church in his early 20's, sealed in the temple to my biological grandmother and they had several kids (the last of whom was my mom). Eventually he and my grandmother were divorced, I don't know all the details on why, something I do know is that woman had an diagnosed bipolar disorder and she was abusive in many ways to her children. Through the course of the divorce process, he was given full custody of all the children under the law, but in the church he was excomunicated. Local church leaders trusted her word about how my papa was the evil one in the relationship.
Well, several years later he remarried to the grandmother I know, and many years after that he was rebaptized and my grandmother was also baptized into the LSD church. Until his death, he was one of the most spiritually influencial people in my life.
After he died, I was given access to read his patriarical blessing and in it I was astounded. This was given to him after his first marriage but before everything else happened. Part of his blessing tells him that he will see the corruption inside the Lords church and that many of satans agents will attempt to stop his worthiness.
12:30, i'm a woman and i'm about to prepare for a mission kinda out of guilt. I never wanted to go on one, i never really gave it much thought. But at the point i'm currently at, if I will regret it for the rest of my life if I don't go-- I will regret it until I'm able to repent, but idk when/how that would be so I think i should just go now and not make the mistake of missing my oprotunity.

When considering these question, it's useful to identify several things. Learn to identify Doctrine, Policy, Culture, and Tradition. These all play a role in any church organization. Confusion often arise from misidentifying the differences between these four concepts. Policy sometimes looks like Doctrine. Tradition sometimes looks like Policy. The truth is, there are many things within our LDS church that are misunderstood because of a failure to recognize what a practice is. As a practice, try to identify at least one aspect of the church that fits into each of these four categories.

The Fundamentals Podcast, the Biblical name “Satan” is most often translated from the Greek “Slanderer” or the Hebrew “adversary.” Both words refer to someone who attacks another verbally or through gossip/media. The spirit of God, however, teaches people not to criticize for the sake of attacking people, and Jesus makes it clear that when you judge you should make sure that your judgement is just/righteous. You shouldn’t judge by appearance, but by truth. There are several examples in the scriptures were people with the spirit of the devil made crimes appear against righteous people using partial truths, when the core of what they were saying was a lie. The most notable was what they said about the savior himself. He was condemned after being accused of conspiracy against the government and tax evasion. All of which the lawyers (liers) found evidence to support, but in the end it was still a lie.

If there was no criticism of polygamy, racism, exclusion, sexism, blood atonement, etc in the LDS church in particular, we may very well still have those things. But, because the criticism was worthwhile, change has been made many times. There's no need to bring the devil and the savior into the argument, as we are talking about men. Pastel ties and tans suits were in vouge, and one of the speakers (I've forgotten his name, but I believe he was a seventy) made a comment that we would never see an Apostle of the Lord wearing a pink tie. The very next week, the guest speaker was Elder L. Tom Perry, who was at that Time an Apostle. He came wearing a pink tie and light tan suit. I have also seen Elder Neal A. Maxwell, wear a lime green suit with a pale yellow shirt. The white shirt is pure Utah culture. It has no doctrinal significance. The Church's policy has always been to encourage best dress, however that is interpreted in a specific culture. They then proclaimed that there had been no religion in the world for 1500 years, --that no one had been authorized to preach and for that period, --that Joe Smith had now received a commission from God for that purpose, and that all such as did not submit to his authority would speedily be destroyed.
