Totally agree.. I now don’t play handicap match play anymore… I only play to better my own highest counting score.. it is unbelievable that this happens.. don’t know what to do about it
Your not the only one who’s confused! My index is 2.7 and we are off to play a comp in Spain on a course that has a slope of 139 so pretty difficult! My handicap goes down to 2 but a chap of 31 goes up to 35 even after the 95% adjustment! Makes no sense to me! I thought i would get an extra couple of shots not lose one! 🤷♂️
In addition to that issue how did anyone manage to accurately assess courses to give them a slope rating ? If I played a course regularly that suited my game my handicap would go down, but that doesn’t mean it’s slope index would be “low” others might find it tougher. Every time i play a new course I reset my handicap, with three handicap figures . It’s an American system designed by people obsessed with statistics, I am struggling to see any benefit over what we had before.
From what I have learnt, they have certain criteria that is assessed. So for example off the tee they get given set distance zones and they then analyse what hazards are in that zone. So how many bunkers are, how deep are the bunkers. They put all these variables in and it creates a score.

For me certain bunkers are irrelevant as I won’t reach them from the tee. My understanding of the old system was the handicaps were adjusted differently depending on which division you fell , high medium low handicap. So a good round for a high handicapper made a bigger cut than for a low. This to an extent helped players compete with vastly different abilities. Now it’s your best last 8 average. If i had a bit of a poor run but was basically sound and played you who will be more consistent, i have a shot or two advantage. Under the old system I had perhaps 7 bad rounds before my handicap changed and any good one saw it change immediately by dropping a shot or two. For you the handicap probably changed more slowly both ways. The reasoning i think for the new system is it allows people to play away courses more realistically. But most of us play our home course and the handicap at that course I think needs to be the most accurate. Thanks again
What annoys me being a higher handicapped player is just how much movement I have with my handicap. My home course has a lower rating largely because it’s short. So my daily handicap is around 24. When we do strike rounds off the tips my handicap goes out to 27 for a course that’s maybe 150 meters longer then usual. I can then go to another course and have a higher handicap again because the course is considered longer. It’s rather annoying having such a swing in the system. My other issue is how much it moves up or down depending on how much competitive golf you play. There’s no anchor anymore. It worked great for coming out of covid with new golfers getting settled in quickly but the movement and aggressiveness at which it can move is terrible sometimes

It’s to do with how the characteristics of the course make it harder or easier according to your ability/handicap. e.g. if there’s a water hazard that a typical low handicapper can drive, but a high handicapper would need two or even three shots to clear it, the difference between them is exaggerated. If there are a lot of such features, this is reflected in how many shots each gets. It can work the other way round, where a higher handicapper would take two anyway, hazard or no hazard, but a low handicapper would be unable to clear it in one, so would be forced to lay up and take an extra shot. In that case the number of shots should reflect that too. At least, that’s roughly the theory . . . not saying the system always works, though!?
Yes that is the theory behind it! I'm not sure they quite have the distance zones perfected yet but hopefully that will improve. The big issue is the lack of data on female golfers. There are very little accurate stats on hitting distance through the bag for women which makes slope less accurate IMO
The issue with that as I see it is that not every say 5 handicapper plays the same! One may smash it a mile but can’t chip and another may be quite a short hitter with an amazing short game! Just don’t see how that could work in real world!

I'm 12.9 GA and would probably be off 12 at that course. What's the Scratch rating and par? I think the system just acknowledges that higher handicaps struggle more than low handicaps on difficult courses. Well done on +2
That makes sense, right? A high slope rating means that the course is disproportionately harder for higher handicappers. So it makes sense that a higher handicap gets more shots than a low handicap, relative to their handicap.
My dear you are 100% correct, it’s like a fat kid getting a prize for taking part, I like you have a very low handicap and since whs has come in, a club matchplay event is a joke. The only sport in the world where the better you are the more of a disadvantage you have. Unbelievable that they have done this.
Paul, again with two other gripes 1st ladies in a rabbits use their red index but play off yellow tee with males one hole in particular springs to mind males off same tee it's s,I, 3 ladies s,I, 14 now males get a stroke but ladies we play do not this is the same on our 4th hole NOT FARE IN MY BOOK . And why should we lose a shot for % . I and lots of others think you should revert to either 16.0 to 16.9 is 16.0 not 16.2 is 17.0 I feel this makes me look a worse player than I am . My playing partners off 23,1 and 23.3 are both off 24 its stupid it should be 23.0

It isn’t full handicap in pairs golf because you have your partner to help you. If mid to high handicappers got full shots in pairs there would be no point lower handicaps playing

When the world handicap system came out, I went from 8.9 to 14.4 work that one out! Cos I could not!

If ladies are moving from reds to yellows and not getting an increase in handicap it is unfair on them not you 👍🏼
Just started back after a long layoff and this new HCP system is total BS. It should just stay as it was.

The whole system is geared to higher hcaps having an advantage. I no longer bother entering hcap matchplay comps. Waste of my time and effort
