As a young kid, I graduated from a Winchester Model 63 22lr semi-auto to a Ruger "Deerstalker" with a Hal Hartley fiddleback maple stock. Luckily my Dad never sold it and it currently resides in an honored space in my gun safe. Unfortunately the Model 63 is long gone. Both were built like tanks, functioned flawlessly, and were quite accurate.
Guys good video I own 2 44 carbines 1 for me and the other for my son excellent brush gun I'd never get rid of them like u said in video I'd wish Ruger would start producing them again
My dad had one of these he bought new at Kmart in the 60s. When i was a kid it's all he hunted with and he took great care of it. Sadly just before Christmas in 92 the house was broken in to and it was stolen along with quite a few more guns. To this day i've never found one in as good of shape. I don't remember now what he paid for that gun and a box of shells though i had heard the story so many times i do remember it wasn't much. I wish like you guys that Ruger would re produce this fine rifle or else sell the patent to a good company that would do so though i prefer Ruger just make it. Thanks for sharing.
It’s s terrible we have thieves in this world… Fortunately you can still find the .44 carbine at gun shows, and possibly get a good deal. I’m sure anything you find will not have the sentimental value your fathers had. All my best, thanks for watching 👍
You guys are awesome as always. I love to watch you and look forward to the next video. Keep up the wonderful videos and the awesome job you offer us each week.
I have a Ruger 44 carbine, and Ruger should have it reintroduced. I emailed them, called and asked why. No response. I understand from other sources on youtube that is wasn't financially practical. It just may be now. Ruger, c'mon guys. No parts available. Not even a new, or used stock. Good video guys. Like to see more. I enjoyed your interaction together.
I'm a big fan of this gun with a huge meaning behind it, i have one that i will never part with. You cannot find these guns cheap that's for sure. Thankful i did not have to pay for mine but would give it back to my father if i could have 5 minutes with him again.
I called Ruger about 10 year's a go to see if they had any part's. I also asked if they had any intention of bringing the 44 carbine back. The lady from Ruger came right back with absolutely not it will never happen. Part's are very hard to find anymore. You pretty much have to buy another carbine with the ear for the years on it to use for part's. Numrich has them from time to time but most likely they are buying complete carbines and stripping them down for part's. They can make more money that way. I have owned 2 of the carbines in the past. One like the one in the video wich was also in very good condition for it's age. No marks on stock or bluing. Just a couple minor marks on the load ramp from being loaded. Plenty accurate for me out to 100 yard's never a failure. The other model 44 I had was the one with a slimmer fore end on the stock. I forget what it is called. Only version of the 44 carbine I never had was the model with removable magazine. The most rare model and was always out of my price range. They are a fantastic carbine. If you can take your carbine out in the summer when you have only a T-shirt on and shoot a whole box of the better hunting ammo with that steal butt plate you are a better man then me. After 30 rounds my shoulder started to feel the recoil more then it liked.
I have never had a good response from Ruger's customer service. And,it seems they couldn't care less what their customers want.I talked with Henry firearms the other day and they were totally different.
There are always some popping up on gunbroker… Watch the auctions for a while to get a feel of what they’re going for 👍 I’m sure you’ll get a great deal 😎
My father in law passed away awhile ago.. He left me a Ruger 22 and Ruger 44 magnum rifle.. Just finished cleaning both.. Looking forward to shooting them on the range.. Question.. What type of scope would you recommend for target shooting. Thanks guys!
I’m a big fan of vortex products… That being said leupold and bushnell are both excellent scopes. My favorite for the money is a Vortex Diamondback, you will love the rifles regardless of what you go with 👍 Hope this helps you out 😎
This rifle was my dad’s and every summer when we vacationed in North Carolina where my uncle lived they would take us out target shooting with it. I remember as a teenager sneaking this gun out to shoot it. Now that my dad has passed it was given to me and the first thing I did was clean it. Man it was dirty I couldn’t believe my dad had left it in this condition. Then I figured out who had shot it last. It was me because dad didn’t know that I had sneaked it out and shot it. To me it is a fine little rifle and it will stay in my safe except when I take it out and shoot it.
Thank you for sharing your experience, that’s what it’s all about for mr. Obvious and myself… I love hearing stories like these! I’m convinced it’s a gas issue (like ours) and all this rifle needs is a “thorough cleaning”… Take your time when disassembling, take pictures as you disassemble (as a reference)… As I stated, the functionality of this firearm is relatively simple… Watch the video I provided, and take your time with it. This Ruger will be shooting well long after you pass it on 👍 Let me know when you get her running brother 😎
I have one (Deerfield from 1999)and thought of selling it but never did. Killed a black bear and two bucks with it. I found Iqmunitions 10 round mag back in April of 2020. Why things this great are put to bed long before they should be, I don't know.
@lastminuteman I've watched lots of videos on rugers 44 carbine and nobody seems to know about this feature. So if you have 5 rounds loaded and are deer hunting and didn't fire any rounds, you have to unload these 5. So you pull the bolt back and remove the round from the chamber, then turn the rifle upside down and push the button inside the loading gate on the right, and each time you push the button a round backs its way out of the magazine until all 4 remaining rounds are unloaded. That way you don't have to work the bolt to unload the rounds in the magazine. It's a ruger safety feature. Thanks so much for the reply you sent and keep giving us the great videos. 👍
My understanding is the first ones were called a deer stalker, Ithaca sued for the rights to the name because of a shotgun by the same name… But a rose by any other name 😎
@@lastminuteman Thanks for the swift reply! Awesome! I think I had the name on the 2nd wrong, possibly Deerfield? That somewhat looked Mini 14ish? Would love to see a comparison. Thanks again love your channel!
Does anyone offer a stainless gas piston for this rifle? I’m wondering if I’m getting some blow by because it will not cycle without catching the empty case in mid cycle. Several people have looked at it but they can’t figure out why it’s doing it. If I could get an aftermarket stainless piston for it that would be great.
Without looking at your particular rifle, I can only tell you what the common issues are… We had a particular issue that was solved by properly cleaning the gas system. Mr. obvious had an issue with the gas piston sticking in the chamber. This was causing a failure to eject… When manually cycling the bolt, everything worked fine, but when we fired it, The spent round would stove pipe and cause a malfunction. I have attached a video link that helped us immensely… Unfortunately Ruger no longer supports this platform. Therefore no parts are available for this particular rifle in the aftermarket… However the functionality of this weapon is fairly simple, and I’m sure this video can help you out. Let me know if this helps, LastMinuteMan ua-cam.com/video/muV5e-3E4Dg/v-deo.html
THERE IS A HOLE DRILLED IN THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL AND A BLOCK WELDED OVER TOP OF IT WITH A HOLE DRILLED IN IT TO LINE UP WITH THE BARREL HOLE, THEN A LARGE HOLE DRILLED IN LINE HORIZONTAL WITH THE BARREL THEN A PISTON THAT WILL SLIDE INSIDE IT WITH ABOUT .001 THOUSANDS OF AND INCH OF CLARENCE TO LET THE PISTON MOVE EASY.
