  • Mass protests continue as Georgia's parliament has voted through a divisive "foreign agent" law.
Critics say the bill - which they call the "Russia law" - could be used to threaten civil liberties.
However, the bill now faces a likely veto by Georgia's president, which the parliament in Tbilisi can override by holding an additional vote.

Transparency is not the issue here. There are two main issues with this law: attaching label of “foreign influence” to organisations that contribute to development of civil society in Georgia and giving power to ministry of Justice to investigate any organisation and get hold of its members’ personal information on the basis of anonymous tips. Basically, it’s not just Russian law but a Bolshevik law essentially.

This bill strips “foreign agents” of rights and is used as a vehicle to consolidate russian power in russia. It is to enact smear campaigns and take away rights, undermining rule of law in favour of authoritarian rule (of what the autocrat says).
It would irreversably cut georgia off with ties to all countries the government wants to cut off.

  • @teflerchina.2987
    @teflerchina.2987 19 днів тому +3

How is the law any different from most other countries laws?
The bill, which passed with 84 members of parliament out of 150 voting in favour, requires non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and media outlets with more than 20 percent of their funding coming from outside Georgia to register as bodies “pursuing the interests of a foreign power”.
The new law is similar to transparency legislations in Western countries - such as the Foreign Agents Registration Act in the United States and similar directives planned in France and other European Union countries.
Vietnam and Thailand have also passed similar laws banning N.G.O' s interfering in their society. African countries have done the same.
The U.S , Australia and U.K for example fund the N.E.D and ASPI as well as other N.G.O 's to create unrest in other countries.
From this article: Government-Funded NGOs, Linked To NATO, Are Interfering In European Elections
NATO-funded and government-funded NGOs are working with government bodies to interfere in German elections. Their “influence operation” aims to keep Germany in line with American foreign policy objectives and undermine the European peace movement.

It all boils down Boscavilky to, one man's interest against the interests of an entire nation....
I will not allow that to happen as long as i continue to be the President of Georgia...
After all its abt the will of our pplz, our own Georgians in whose name we continue to rule, rather serve them...
The protests ominously seem to remind one of the Arab spring moment in 2011, Salome....
I really do not understand, Salome as to how far could ur office go in vetoing this controversial foreign-agents bill, from becoming a law?
There may be technical hurdles to overcome, yet i am determined to hv this scandalous law being overturned alongwith the law makers, Boscavillky...
Correct me Salime if i am wrong, aren't these protestations by the Georgian public an annual affair? sort of ritual...?
In a way they appear to be so, for Georgia saw such protests in 2022 & in 2023 too before the present protests....
U see Boscavilky, aftee the 2008 war with Russia, & the consequential loss of our territories, Abkazhia & South Ossetia, their independence being recognised by Russia the GD ie Georgian dream party chose to resume diplomatic & trade ties with Russia besides opening uo our skies access to Russian airliners...
Then u'd refused to fly the Georgian airways in protest but they un turn chose to boycott u...?
The pplz in fact wush fir a closer & deeper ties with the EU & the Georgian govt has been veering towards the authoritarian Russian style reign, which has provoked a string protestarions from the pplz, a spintaneous protest, not orchestrated by any political party or a committee...!
Do u really believe it to be so Salome...?
Why do u think otherwise Boscavilky...?
The 2008 Georgia-Russia coincided eerily with the cross border terrorist strike in Bombay...
and although the nxt elections were won by the incumbents, very soon troubles began & the ruling party in Delhi began to sink in a morass of its own making, hibbled by the so called civilian protests, spntaneous protests, the commentators repeated & parroted only by those ie the youth, the white collared yuppie professionals in law, funance, health & medicine besides off course the grocers, traders, merchants, the Satodias, all never ever acting one way or other w/o a strong financial n /or otherwise strong benefit /incentive.... delivered to them in their pockets, un their bank accounts, in cash n /or in kind...
the stereotype wall st MBA types besides the technocrats, clamouring for a "change".... u see Salime, the same highly well palced, financially secure, Mob /crowd & yet desperate for freebies,, movie tkts with big basket popcorn & pizza loaves, n /or free access to week end IPL post match bingo parties in luxury hotels hppned to be the most aggressive protestors, vociferously demanding, agitating for a change, on social media,....
That was the social media boim time, Mark Zuckerberg mania fuelling the "change protestations" suitably rewarded, incentivised off course with feebies thrown at the youth, the massive demography dividend... crowd...!!!
And now Georgian govt, is finally in the 3rd & final year of the end of the 3rd term when elektions are due, to be held few minths down the line...
How can we aspire to hv the cake & eat it too Boscavilky...?
Thats precisely what the Georgian govt has been progressively doing over the past 2 yrs... progressively choosing to ignore the EU & West protestations...
has not the EU agreed to waive off the conditions reqd to be fulfilled enabling Georgia to be part of the EU at the earliest...?
As for the so called spontaneous protests who's the billionnaire Georgian, politician who's made his billions in Russia, Salome...?
Ivanishvilli, who emerged victorious against Sakashvilly in 2012...
And which Russia do u allude to Salome, while u keep on referring to Russia vis a vis the EU n /or the US...?
How many Russia's are there Boscavilky..?
    Isn't there a only Moscow/Kremlin...?
True Salome a single Moscow /Kremlin n yet inhabited by....

To anyone comparing this with FARA law! According to this law anyone can write down anonymous letter about suspicion that someone may be foreign agent and just submit it without any access procedure and government has rights to access any type of personal information about the suspected person or organisation
In the end the fact is WE DON'T WANT RUSSIA!!!
I will clarify, anyone means not only organisations but regular people who consume any type of western media, will it be books, movies, videos or news, consider most student fundings. stating any opposing opinion could also be considered being foreign agent because of influence. At any point it doesn't matter whether you are actually an organisation or just a citizen, whether you get support from any western country (and mind you Georgia heavily relies on western support, b/c government doesn't want to spend extra money for even cultural restorations :) so yea ), under just suspicion any citizen can be identified as single funded nonprofit organisation that didn't register itself :) there goes opposition what are we taking about then?
** In addition we ALREADY HAVE A TRANSPARENCY LAW THAT REGULATES SUCH ORGANISATIONS, GOVERNMENT TAKES INCOME FROM IT AS WELL, THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANOTHER VAGUE LAW THAT INVOLVES LABELING CITIZENS AS POTENTIAL AGENTS
About anonymous letters, the process of labelling someone agent is entirely different from US. To my understanding in US government must first prove you are an agent and only after that it's possible to label someone as agent. According to "Russian law" the moment there is a suspicion you are an agent, you get labelled one and government doesn't not have any responsibility of defending you, you have to fend for yourself (majority can't afford living let alone hiring a lawyer)
to add to that, if you are under suspicion legally you can't go on with your regular life for at least 6 months. It's silencing out voices and nothing else, the law isn't even legalized yet and people are being brutally beaten and silenced already. Many in hospitals with serious injuries, police are capturing people and then ganging up to beat them when it's not necessary!! They already removed the person from the protesting scene why beat them?! Why send gangs to our houses and beat us for opposing opinion?! yet our government lies in our faces that police do what they have to and beating people up in pulp doesn't go against anything, if you are interested about the scale school aged kids are being arrested just for standing and protesting, no one's safe. Therefore, it's either the EU or Russia, and we prefer the EU in hopes of at least being able to ask for basic human rights! For being able to protect ourselves!

Allow the protests to continue. But preventing another color revolution that will create civil war and destroy the country as Ukraine has, is a wise move. It's important to reveal and expose those who are attempting to overthrow the government illegally in Georgia. Georgians are entitled to know what outsiders such as Russia, the US, and others are doing. That's why the US not only has a similar law, but the much tougher Patriot Act. Foreign agents should not be able to hide behind charities.

What & how do u mean by 2 Moscow /Kremlins, Boscavilky...?
Its very simple Salome... How many places named Georgia?
At least 2 prominent places : One in US - Jimmy Carters constituency & the other in the polar opp ie in the East europe - SW of Moscow...!
besides far too many firts, islands, named after King George?
The southern state of India, ruled by a politician named Mr Stalin, u recall Salome?
Off course yes... u mean the Madras presidency, Boscavilky...?
The seat of power ie the legislative assembly convenes in St George Fort in Madras...!
As far as 2 Kremlin /Moscow concerned isn't Russia reigned over by the President & the Prime minister?
Since the time they were together in the the office of Anatoly Sobchak - Law Professor, his protege:- Dmitri Anatolyvic Medwedev & alongwith him was KGB agent returned frim East Berlin - V Putin...
later chosen as the Mayor /PM, first & :then President by outgoing Boris Yeltsin...
And since then for 24 yrs now Czar-Russia, V V Putin & Dmitri A Medwedev hv been lording over Russia uninterruptedly...
briefly switching roles /offices during 2008-12...!
    Soooh what's the inference, Biscavilky...?
Both acting in tandem... marching in sync... left, right, left, right....
U mean one of them leans towards the West ie the US...?
During his reign as President , & his visit to the US, didn't D A M, visit among other places, Twitter office & post his message?
Yeaah he used to make sime noise abt liberalising, openness, freedom etc etc... but don't we all kniw the reality of Russia & ONE man rule?
conversely look at the situation in the WH...?
The Blue & the Red color parties.... One is openly renowned for his pro - Russia stance, isn't he..?
He was bailed out by Deutsche Bank chief - - Moscow office - - during his bankruptcy, when nobody was willing to touch Trump with a bargepole & wasn't the then Deutsche bank chief, very paly with V V Putin... eventually leaving office in disgrace, taking the German bank down with him....?
but why do u oppose the foreign agents Bill, Salome...?
for the simple reason its a copy, cut, paste of Russian draconian law & how could i allow that to be enacted?
In any case elections are due in few months... The public would decide, in favour or against the current ruling party....
Hv u not seen the impact of the generously liberal euphemism for literally bending backwards by the Indian successive regimes since 1990z?
allowing 26 % stake in news channels, 100 % FDI - investment in films & TV, 76 % in Science publications...?
Virtually handing over the platforms to foreigners to set the agenda, to shape, mould, condition, ie literally indoctrinate the public, both highly well informed, learned, knowledgeable & the illiterate ones...?
How did it happen? Was it overnight?
That chap at Morgan Stanley - Head, began his elektion coverage journeys across India with a team of 20 felliw journalists / mainstream media Editors, IT Czar - N Nilekani ( Aadhar card notoriety) Telecom Czar - Mr S Mittal - - courtesy International Guru of Indian political parties & one time Super - PM - unelekted - lordung over entire cabinet, incl the Cabinet secretariat - - Mr Sam Pitroda the great...!!!
And u know the rest as they say is scandalous history of past 24 yrs & continuing....
150 luxury hotel properties established in India...
The data set champions would do well to present the entire area /land occupied by the 5 star luxury hotel chain over past 24 yrs.... in a simple one page chart....
besides the cities, territories, literally occupied by the foreign investors, incl the Jammu & Kashmir...!!!
    How did it begin?
With a motley group of 20 limouzine liberals innocuously touring India, chatting up with the rustic dynasty politician rulers.....

Its so obvious what is going on here. Local businessmen from the ruling party some of whom are backed by Russia have pushed for this law to be implemented.
The idea is that transparency NGOs or NGOs which represent rights of discriminated groups (including workers) could be marginalised in mainstream Georgian society. It also means that the money coming in from funding will reduced and make people more reliant on the corrupt local businessmen.
It may be that some NGOs are not ideal and there is scope for corruption but the are still an overall positive on society and trying to marginalise them will only encourage more corruption and give more power to oligarchs and government.
