    Okay, I'm halfway through installing open shelves in my kitchen right now, and I kind of resent how easy you make this look and how well they turned out. Mine are looking pretty good for a DIYer, but it's been pretty stressful. Great video and nice result!

      Hey Andrew, thanks for watching! I'm pretty sure your shelves are turning out great, especially considering you're doing it all yourself - I've been a GC for a number of years so the experience helps the look. Thanks again!

    That turned out great! There’s more skill involved in getting all that level then most people might think. I install these all the time but typically get stuck in a scenario where The wall is painted already and there’s no tile to cover my damage. So I just drill a 1 inch hole in each stud directly behind the shelf with a laser shining down the bit, and Feed the rod right into the stud.

    I love this style of shelf. I'm just wondering how much weight they can actually hold. I understand the pipes are strong, but technically isn't most of the weight supported by that thin bit of wood that's directly above the holes that were drilled? After watching this, I think I'll go with shelves that have the support bracket underneath. Beautiful job though.☺️

    • @DCLAUniverse

    good idea with brackets, but the tile should be put in first the shelves after. tile cut around the shelves don't look nice

    • @richthomas5013
      @richthomas5013 3 роки тому +1

      I disagree. If the tile is done right it shouldn’t be obvious which came first. Putting the shelves up first eliminates any scribe cutting if the wall isn’t exactly flat. Plus using a Skilsaw on the sight, I doubt it’s a perfect cut. This method keeps it clean and simple.

    Did you or your tile guys reuse the drywall cutouts & repair the cut lines then mastic over for tile? Or what was the process of ensuring there wasn’t a giant hole behind the tiles? I’m literally about to do this same project but want to be sure I’m not making life more difficult.

    • @DCLAUniverse

      Hello. We just mudded holes and lightly sanded. The tile guy went right over mud

    • @fancythisgirl3
      @fancythisgirl3 3 роки тому +1

      @@DCLAUniverse so I figured out a way to do it without having to use excessive mud. I bought a sheet of 1/4” drywall, cut them about 3-1/2”x3-1/2” (roughly how large each hole in the wall was where I installed the nipple/flange), measured how large the holes were on the flange at the largest end of the threaded portion, drilled holes in the center of the cut drywall squares to as the same size as the threaded flange, and placed them over the flange after screwing on the nipples. The total dry time was roughly 1-1/2 - 2 hours and I didn’t have to excessively sand and re-mud to cover up any drywall tape or level out any uneven areas. I was able to paint right after sanding! Thanks again for the video! My shelves look amazing because of you!

    Surprised you got the holes aligned with the pipes, marking & drilling by hand like that. A slight misalignment and you're toast...

    I like the concept but your shelves need to be thicker because after you drill out that hole you are not left with a lot of wood to actually support the shelf so if you load those up with heavy dishes, etc it could cause a blow out in the wood and everything comes crashing down.

      Butcher block is very durable, it contains a lot of glue/resin. Most of the time, the glue joints are actually stronger than the wood fibers. They aren’t going anywhere. Plenty of product on each side of the bracket, nicely done.
