I liked that subtle joke. It doesn't matter HOW MUCH you wanna go. If you weren't part of the initial plan the say no. Then if you get invited once, corteously deny the invitation. They insist a second time, corteously deny the invitation again. If they STILL insist a third time after two denials, you better accept it fast or it's NOT coming back a fourth time. Lol
      Lol the rule of 3.

I never thought about this way before lol
In your own household, you're supposed to invite every guest to whatever your family is partaking; food, drinks, activity, whatever. However, on the other hand... the funny thing is you're SUPPOSED TO DECLINE the very invitation if offered to you! It's like an unwritten rule 😂😂
So example, in a friend's house at dinner, you would ALWAYS be invited to eat yet you should ALWAYS refuse the first time. If you accept the first time, it's rude and weird. If they don't insist, they probably don't want you to partake. Now if they really really insist, it's rude to decline!

What i appreciate from Rachel here is she is socially intelligent. She could sense right away that Nick's mom 'hated' her. In reality, or in other films even, lots of characters just couldn't take the hint and it could be frustrating for us.

Yes it’s a matter of culture clash and the scene was meant to highlight Nick’s naivety and blind bias toward his family and lifestyle. He’s not a snobby person but because of his upbringing he has more blindsides as someone who pretended to be an average Joe middle class. He sees and logically understands the different experiences but his standards and definitions have completely different context due to this. Ex.
Nuclear family-> “family get together” = 3 or more but less than 10 people.
Nuclear family + Extended family-> “family get together” = 20-30people
Culturally large families like Hispanics & Asians + family friends-> “family get together” = 50-100 people
Clans-> “family get together” = family reunion of up to 200+ guests + family friends + coworkers
