About Crazy Rich Asians
"Crazy Rich Asians” follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.

The "refuse three times out of complete formality but immediately agree upon the third invitation" classic
I LOVED this moment! Teehee
I liked that subtle joke. It doesn't matter HOW MUCH you wanna go. If you weren't part of the initial plan the say no. Then if you get invited once, corteously deny the invitation. They insist a second time, corteously deny the invitation again. If they STILL insist a third time after two denials, you better accept it fast or it's NOT coming back a fourth time. Lol
Lol the rule of 3.
I never thought about this way before lol
In your own household, you're supposed to invite every guest to whatever your family is partaking; food, drinks, activity, whatever. However, on the other hand... the funny thing is you're SUPPOSED TO DECLINE the very invitation if offered to you! It's like an unwritten rule 😂😂
So example, in a friend's house at dinner, you would ALWAYS be invited to eat yet you should ALWAYS refuse the first time. If you accept the first time, it's rude and weird. If they don't insist, they probably don't want you to partake. Now if they really really insist, it's rude to decline!
@@karu6111 if you do this at a "friends house" then you really aren't friends...
I subconsciously counted and that was perfectly executed!
I remember watching this scene and thinking "What's wrong with her dress?" then I saw the mansion 😂😂 Nick was the villain for leaving her so unprepared.
@@childelee2569 Depends on the family tho, some family really love their daughter so the husband is the one who join the girl's family. But well its usually not going well coz the man will get or will feel really pressure, since it our culture that the one is the one who have to responsible about their family.
Even in this movie, Astrid and her husband divorce
@@anthoniusbudkay8538 that’s super rare. Really really rare for that to happen.
@@childelee2569 It's not that rare in modern times. I lived in China for a while and because of the one child rule, there are a LOT of women that "carry" their family's name. Most that I met had exceptional careers (engineers, doctors, lawyers), and kept their maiden name so the family line continued. They were expected to keep any family status.
@@anthoniusbudkay8538 yeh and he will be under his wife's rule n their family pet with no freedom 🤣
@@sangrangbty540 Depends on the girl tho, but yeah usually the man gonna be a pet 😂
What i appreciate from Rachel here is she is socially intelligent. She could sense right away that Nick's mom 'hated' her. In reality, or in other films even, lots of characters just couldn't take the hint and it could be frustrating for us.
In movies, it's always easier to spot when someone is being condescending or passive aggressive. In reality, people are much more adept and hide it better. Or maybe I'm socially inept, who knows?
@@timothyphan9346 Believe me, it can be sensed easily in real life too
@@princess7jasmine well yeah, if you're socially intelligent.
for people like me who are socially inept, I just assume everyone kind of dislikes me
Rachel didn’t like his family either other than Astrid.
What hint?
I always thought he should have warned her, if it wasn't for the friend she would have shown up in the casual red dress and felt very underdressed and more out of place than she already did.
Yeah, I honestly didn't like Nick for most of the movie. But then he really didn't have much of a personality other than being the hot secretly rich guy. I blame it on bad writing.
To me, not warning me what I am getting into (Not necessarily family attitudes because I do get some just don't see their family that way) but not making sure she had proper wardrobe and not tell her she was going to a large party (not just family) is break up material to me. I mean down the line what is he not going to tell her that is of huge importance.
He was a loser
It's a movie okay
In reality,
If a millionaire guy invites his gf for the first time
I'm pretty sure he would tell all the single details that must be said,
Especially if the family is of Asian heritage.
Or he just so in love and doesn't understand girl thing. So some that rich maybe doesn't care at all, I love her, who care!!!
Awkwafina killed it in this movie. She was so hilarious, especially with the “Yeah, I’ll come to dinner”
She 100% is why I like the movie. I just want a spin off of her and the cousin fixing fashion disaster people.
I 100% agree. Awkwafina was so incredible in this movie.
I found her unnecessary interruptions slightly annoying as if due was trying really hard
She was a scene stealer for sure! She’s hilarious 😆
@@daylight8690 nah she was great. comedian so...
So he dint tell her he was filthy rich..and was just gonna let her come to that party in a summer dress..brilliant
I think he didn’t understand the female side of the family or he liked her the way she is
or hoping his family accept the way she is just like him
@ymarrero23 even if he doesn’t care about it wouldnt you want your family to like them?
@ymarrero23 While he wore an iconic white suit and looked stunning 😂
@@dolphins6010 yes but he obviously didn't think it was a big thing. Guys are blind like this especially when they like girls they won't think that far they will just assume you know what to where 😂😂😂
Awkwafina steals EVERY scene she is on during this whole movie.
“You’ve got a cocktail dress in your trunk?”
“I’m not an animal Rachel” 🤣
Awkwafina’s walk in heels up the stairs of the mansion is spot on how I walk in heels-like a horse wearing roller skates.
😂😂😂
Yeah, it's no wonder Alistair fell for her.
So true. I loved her in this movie
I adore Asian Ellen.
She's so unfunny and annoying asf, much like the real ellen

If there's a movie with just her character I would watch it in an instant
She cldnt miss a snap 😄
😂😂😂
Ok, I’m just curious, did Nick Young know that Rachel had a rich friend who would help her? Because otherwise, can you imagine if Rachel did have to show up in that red dress? Or imagine getting to the party in a taxi?
i thought she look better in the red dress
@@az21bob666 unfortunately, with his snobby rich family, it’s not just about what looks better. It’s about the price as well
lol your last sentence made me laugh! that would have been so sad. Nick really is the villain of this story.
Nick did know about Peik Lin, but i don’t know if he knew about her being rich.
I really don't think he was concerned with it at all..He was clueless in that regard.
Peik Lin is so real. Her taking selfies up the stairs is *exactly* what I'd do in a world-class mansion owned by a billionaire family like that.
LOLL it’s funny how Peik Lin only said yes to joining the party after the third time Nick asked her
Right?! I love how they included those small details like you should accept an offer the 3rd time they offer you something
Its not about being funny but some kind of protocol - the rich always refuses twice before saying yes. That's why Nick kept asking too. If you say yes the first time, people will know that you are not rich.
@@sariel8406 I don’t think this act is strictly reserved for the rich, I think this is primarily due to Asian culture in general
Had a whole bunch of dresses ready lol
It would be rude to accept the first time.
Having used to live in Singapore, coming back to this movie almost makes me nostalgic for all the scenery there and the food, the food was impossible to beat
Having been a Singaporean living in Perth, it made me homesick 😭
The food is fire
Remember, this was filmed in Johor 😁
Cue the Singapore vs Malaysia comments
@@zzz7315 YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT HERE I AM
..................malaysian food better😏😏😏
Honestly Peik Lin was so prepared for any occasion 🤣🤣 Clubbing, Cocktail and "The Walk of Shame"mm hmm
I HAVE to wonder what her "Walk of Shame" looks like!
She is one of the best friends
3:54 In Asia , you cannot say "yes" or accept the first offer or invitation of anyone asking you to a party or any ocassion. You have to decline or say no at least twice and if the person really wants you to go they need to ask you twice or more than that. It's a culture thing haha!
It’s also like that in Africa too😆
OH, OK... Thanks for that.
This is great to know! Thank you!
In my culture, people will just invite themselves. It's super annoying lol
That explains why she declined twice even though she really wanted to go 😂
At first I hated Nick's mom but later on she explained what kind of culture this is and how much Rachel will have to go through to break generational curses, it felt like she didn't wanted any other girl to go through what she has been through
Or rather it is a test. The girl must be serious about this whole thing. Not break down after a few years and ends up in a drama. A great real example will be Megan and Harry.
@@pila1280they are grifters 😂 Meghan and Harry
Read Spare and say that. He went through a lot.
It's funny how Awkwafina's character probably has more wealth than anyone I have ever met in my life but she is the 'lesser' one in this movie.
Awkwafina's family is definitely new money rich (big golden house, bright red car etc.) The elite rich are those where you wouldn't even be able to find their hs on Google maps cause they don't want others to know that they're rich
Funnily that 200mil estate was filmed in Malaysia, because Singapore doesn't have that big piece of land. Even the president is living in an apartment.
Lol
Yes, and im very sure if a house like that exists in Singapore, it would be worth more than 200 Million dollar lol
@liyana Basmi Peik Lin's house is in Singapore. It looks like a house diagonally across from where I used to live in Novena.
The president lives in apartment by her own choice. She has an official residence at The Istana.
What?😂😂
I love Rachel’s best friend, she’s so funny and a quick thinker.
Agreed!
To be a brilliant actress in two languages as if both were your mother tongue is extraordinary. Kudos to Michelle Yeough.

Oh my gosh same!!
Most of Singapore is not like this. Speaking as a local 🥲
@@KoiYakultGreenTea how is it like
@@SamXG. depends how much money you have
As an Asian.. I can confirm that there is nothing more nerve racking than meeting Asian parents. Not Asians who immigrated in the USA, but those who are very traditional. From the questions, down to the sarcastic passive-aggressive remarks. I have Chinese friends whose family is very traditional that they won't accept non-Chinese to be their kids partner, let alone if they're not academically inclined nor if they're family doesn't own any businesses.
Yeah think most Asian parents don’t actually accept their in-laws 100% ever 😂 they just learn to live with them
In cases like these, it falls to the son/daughter to defend their partner and cut off the passive-aggressive remarks. Otherwise, you should simply meet them less.
@@waleedabbas4996 That comes after they meet. We don't usually defend our partners right then and there because it is considered rude to talk back to elders, especially when they're measuring up what kind of person your partner is. It is also a test if this person would cause you to disrespect your own family. Everyone knows this, both the son/daughter and their partner understand that we can't show any disrespect. It is only after they meet or when I get home is when I will talk to them about those remarks.
This scene is the epitome of TMI. When someone asks you about your parents, you don't give them their whole life story.
You're only playing into their gossip (which happens in Chinese families regardless if you're rich or poor) when you downplay you and your parents' accomplishments like that.
What's is TMI? And could you please explain why is it playing into gossip? I'm really curious.
The part about not telling the whole life story I totally understand. But thank you for pointing it out, probably I wouldn't pay attention.
@@omg9261TMI is an acronym for “too much information.” Since she unnecessarily shared so much, people can twist her life story and it’ll spread.
@@sydney7035 wow, interesting. Thank you!
It supposed to highlight Rachel’s ABC-ness. She overshared which you can tell Elenor did not like. And for the reason you just described.
It always bothered me how she talked about her mom like that. Why didn’t she just open with, “no, my mom’s a realtor and my dad passed away awhile ago.” Full stop. I’ve rewatched this and now chock it up to nerves. My family still cringes whenever this scene happens. Not because of culture, just because it’s cringey.
Everyone's talking about how Peik Lin accepting the invitation the third time is asian, but no one's talking about Mrs. Young supervising the cooks
Awkwafina steals every scene she's in...The 'Walk of Shame' clothes tag is priceless! LOLOLOL!
It’s funny how she mentioned not looking like Sebastian in the little mermaid and now she plays Scuttle in the new little mermaid 😂
In the uncensored version, she goes, "Yah, I'll f***in' come to dinner!" and they way it merges into his question is sooooo brilliant! I LOVE Asian Ellen! Hahahahah
The way she says "CHINA" gets me every time!! 😂😂😂
I went to see this movie with my Asian American family because of the representation. My dad had to explain to me what it was really like for an average person to marry into a rich family/the culture of it all etc. Anyways I was so happy because for once I felt like Asians were portrayed better than the typical American media stereotype. Also the protagonists aren't that average! 😂 I literally cried tears of joy 😹
Too much materialistic lives in Asia. I wonder if you've lived there. Status is important in Asia
@@lazyscorpion3889 I vacationed for a few months in Southeast Asia in Thailand and Laos. It is really about status and there is extreme power distance. People try to mold/conform into what they believe are social norms. I live in America and my family is just an average Asian household. My relatives who visited my family are more well off and did not like our small house. My parents didn't really care. It's just whatever they could afford. My dad never understood why status mattered so much in Asian culture and he said to him none of that mattered. It was like people were always competing and it annoyed him. He asked why couldn't people make the best of what they have instead of always proving their worth to others?
It's still an American production though. It'll never be on Viki.
Asian Ellen is Gold.
May the force be with her always.

I live in singapore and.. sorry to bust your dreams, this movie is definitely not an accurate portrayal to what Singapore is all about. Most of the shots, I believe this one included, is done in Malaysia. But of course Singapore has high GDP but the people here don't exactly live an extravagant life.
Many will tell you that the real Singapore isn’t like this, but as a Malaysian who went there often, I think you’ll enjoy just exploring the Marina Bay Sands area, Orchard road, the food stalls and the food, that place Rachel and Eleanor played mahjong in - lots of interesting cafes and speakeasies.
