Ken Jeong and Awkwafina's Character surname is "Goh". Now "Goh" is actually the same surname as "Wu"- Constance Wu's surname. Just that one is the romanization from China, and the other is the romanization by the British (As Singapore and Malaysia were under the British). Hence, all the "Wus" in Singapore will have the surname "Goh"
Well you're right about Goh and Wu being the same surname. But Goh and Wu has nothing to do with British and China romanisations. The surname we're talking about is commonly pronounced as Wu within Mandarin Chinese, whilst within another variant of Chinese, Hokkien Chinese (the major Chinese dialect group within Singapore) is pronounced as Goh. Incidently, the Wu surname that is pronounced in Mandarin, is pronounced as Ng in both Cantonese and Hakka variants of Chinese.
Im just wondering, it seems that peik lin’s family is rich too. They own a mansion in singapore? You have to have all the bucks to put up a house like that there and it seems that in this story they’re poor compared to the Youngs and not a part of their elite circle...
Coldclearblue in the novels, it was explained that Peik Lin’s family owns a construction and property development company, the company ranks at 178th on what appears to be an Asian version of the Fortune 500 list, meaning yes, she is very very wealthy
I've written this somewhere before, but I'll do it again. Peik Lin's family is new money that made its wealth during her lifetime. Nick's family is old money, so they've been prominently wealthy for generations that it's become difficult to trace back. The entire book trilogy is a modern retelling of Gatsby. Peik Lin's family is like Gatsby and the Young family is like Tom, Nick, and Daisy.
@@uncreative5766 that and the youngs are so secretive.. No body knows about the youngs apart from the top most of the upper circle like khoos, tai's, leongs who apparently are related one way or the other...
By the way the novels are inspired by true stories of the ultra rich in Singapore, China and other parts of Asia. The author hails from one of the richest families there with wealth going back at least 3 generations (back when Singapore was still a British colony) so he writes from experience. He is old money indeed.
The whole film I kept wondering why Nick set her up to fail. Didn’t tell her dress code for the parties, didn’t tell her anything useful! What the heck nick??
Anyone notice how comfortable and secure the wife is when her husband is talking about how the lady is a model and she has good back bone . While in America most women like Myself would be insecure and give my bf a dirty look . How did this happen ? I know more Asian cultures and Europe not have as much insecurity or trust issues
I must say, yes, it's a cultural phenomenon. There are several factors that contribute to this. Firstly, it could be attributed to the wife's affluent background. She herself comes from wealth, making her a suitable match for a boy who also hails from a prosperous family. Unlike the Cinderella fairy tale, such scenarios are rarely witnessed in Asian culture. In most cases, the husband and wife share similar backgrounds and familial affluence. Secondly, the wife might assume the role of a matriarch within the family. She assumes responsibility for numerous affairs, including business matters. Their union is not solely based on love but also on a strong shared interest. They are interdependent, recognizing that they cannot thrive without one another, and she is fully aware of this reality. Consequently, she remains unfazed by her husband expressing admiration for other women's beauty, as she possesses a sense of security within their relationship. Lastly, the husband is discussing the qualities he believes his son should look for in a wife. His admiration for another woman stems from his desire to find a suitable female successor to carry on their family legacy. His intention is solely focused on his son's future, rather than seeking any romantic involvement outside of his marriage.
@deborahthompson6248 remember that he's saying those things in the context of finding his son a 'suitable' girlfriend. So, he's clearly praising Rachel for the son, not for him....
I really enjoyed the movie, but it is always interesting that when a movie tries to poke fun at ethnic stereotypes it can only be done by the culture that is being lampooned. It is doubtful any white Caucasian director could have made this move given the locations and having to know the Asian culture and locations where they had to shoot, but someone else made the comment of the weird Asian son who is a cliché, but i just don’t believe his character would have been accepted if it had been made in America

Nick Young? Lol it would be nice to keep D'Angelo Russell with him so if Nick cheats on her, someone would snitch about it.
I clicked on this with the hope that Swaggy P was part of this film. He is not.
We need a lineup, HBO. I’m dying here.
No
Patiently awaiting part 2… 😭
"I thought red was a lucky color, right?"
"Yeah...if you're an envelope!"
LOL
I thought red was a lucky colour.
"yeah if you're an envelope" LMAO!
Red is the lucky color, right?
Yeah, if you're an envelope.🤣
Yep, Peik Lin's dad acting EXACTLY like how my Asian dad would act.
@@uncreative5766 Who is Gatsby😏
By the way the novels are inspired by true stories of the ultra rich in Singapore, China and other parts of Asia. The author hails from one of the richest families there with wealth going back at least 3 generations (back when Singapore was still a British colony) so he writes from experience. He is old money indeed.
With Peik Lin being this rich and couldn’t be anywhere near to the Young family… it’s unbelievable.
I love the personalities they gave the Gohs in the film. They didn't really stand out to me in the book.
The whole film I kept wondering why Nick set her up to fail. Didn’t tell her dress code for the parties, didn’t tell her anything useful! What the heck nick??
Anyone notice how comfortable and secure the wife is when her husband is talking about how the lady is a model and she has good back bone . While in America most women like
Myself would be insecure and give my bf a dirty look . How did this happen ? I know more Asian cultures and Europe not have as much insecurity or trust issues
Just learn to apprecvate other beuatiful women thats basically the secret
I don’t think it’s a cultural thing, but insecurity kills attraction for sure.
The old man is like ' ah man whatever let me eat... 😂😂'.
The Asian Ellen line was the best!
Aquafina is fantastic.
I really enjoyed the movie, but it is always interesting that when a movie tries to poke fun at ethnic stereotypes it can only be done by the culture that is being lampooned. It is doubtful any white Caucasian director could have made this move given the locations and having to know the Asian culture and locations where they had to shoot, but someone else made the comment of the weird Asian son who is a cliché, but i just don’t believe his character would have been accepted if it had been made in America
just white, some random yt man isnt a Caucasian
The title should be Peik Lin are so done with her entire family for 4 minutes straight
Kids starving in America 😂 something which we Indians are used to 🤪 Agree?
.
"I thought RED was a lucky color?" 😲😲😲😲
