    Finally figured out the song and name to this... well band and song... radio wasn't able to let me hear very clearly because of old car... college pirate radio played it and i heard some lyrics clearly typed and now i'm here... and now my neighbors whether they like it or not will enjoy it too. Thanks!

    Listen to the bridge, it starts off really tight and solid structure and slowly over repetitions it gets looser and looser and less bound.
    They take its bones away.

    I find it awesomely coincidental that some of my favorite bands, baroness, the sword, mastodon, all came out with their new albums with an ultimately more mellow, but soulful sound. I have no problem when talented bands drop the technical aggressiveness and add layers upon layers of emotion. well done baroness. well done.

    Bands evolve...you should try it too. I'll be the first to say that the likes of Baroness ( or Mastodon ) are not as heavy as they were when they started. But then again, they're not as young as they used to be, have flourished as musicians and , as artists, have moved in other directions. The problem with our scene is that change is considered a disgrace or offense. When in fact it, it's the change that keeps it relevant.

    To settle all of this debate, "Stoner" or "Sludge" would be bands in the like of Electric Wizard, Sleep, OM, Eyehategod, Bongripper and a host of other like minded musicians, sure Baroness has those elements (especially in their first couple of EP's), and they've long been associated with that scene, but they're just a different band now. Baroness is the more melodic, intricate and artsy band than Mastodon ever was, or will be. Mastodon is more of a southern/sludge tinged metal band, with heavy prog tendencies. BUT that doesn't change the fact that both bands kill it

    I'll be the first to say that I'm a heaviness purist when it comes to a ton of death/thrash/metalcore/melodeath/groove/post-hardcore/whatever bands, and I hate when they soften up.... but when Baroness and Mastodon and Opeth explore the uncovered planetary surfaces they've discovered - it's magic.

  • @finowa

    why is it that it's always "lol you don't like the new style?? omg fuck off and listen to ac dc XD" if someone says they don't appreciate a band completely changing the style and essence of their music? do you feel like you owe a band your unconditional support, or do you actually judge an album by the music instead of who made it? i love 1st, 2nd and red album, and can honestly say i'm disappointed by this new song. i'd love a new batch of songs in the vein of the red album, wouldn't you?

    that said, if financial issues "make" you change your music to a more corporate type, pick up a day job again. neurosis makes a very strong case of doing what they do, being widely respected, yet not feeling like they "have to evolve in order to survive". while working day jobs and whatnot.

    Some people are just never pleased. Do you honestly want the same exact sound every single song, on every single album? Bands progress, they move forward, and with Baroness they very obviously love to experiment around. Blue is very different than Red in my opinion, and Yellow & Green will be very different than either of those albums.
    And you know what? That's fucking awesome.

    In my opinion this album is fukin sensational. Take the time to listen to it, not just hear it. Yes, it's a different path. Big bands, new era, something different, that's what makes it interesting.If they reproduced something almost similar to Red & Blue we would probably moan it was too similar. There is great craftsmanship in all music genres, but I truly feel this album will grow and grow and will ring true as one of the best for the next 10 years. Different, Yes, a classic - in the making.

    That's the thing: you cannot have "melodic sludge" in the same way you cannot have symphonic garage rock. The ugliness is part of the core of what makes sludge metal what it is. Take that away, and you've got... IDK, some stoner/Southern rock offshoot. Not to say there cannot be melodic moments in sludge records (a perfect example of that would be Fleshpress), but the essence canot be melodic.

    OK, I listened to the whole thing twice and I can already tell it's not as good as the hype in Decibel magazine and other places that have said it was. You can be pissed off at this comment if you want, but the Blue Record and Red Album are better. This is ok, but their other albums are far better in my opinion. I'll keep listening to Promordial instead. To the Nameless Dead is really, really good.

  • @theillestanding

    Heard the whole album(s) and was pretty disappointed. A lot of disco dance beats, dumbed down lyrics and indie-hipster tendencies. Loved everything they did until hearing this album - was their biggest fan. Nickelback comparisons are comically wrong, but comparisons to the Killers aren't too far off. That said, I will still give future albums a chance because everything they did previously was outstanding.

  • @ssmith87

    What you said is so true..take my favorite band Mastodon for example; people who claim their 'huge' fans of the band say Remission is their favorite album and out of the other side of their mouth they say, Mastodon gets progressively worse. NO they aren't 'huge' fans of the band they aren't even a fan they're just a fan of the album Remission. I love Remission, but it's my least favorite from them.

  • @dealodi1

    lma at all the nickleback comments ,if they did twere like them every song would sound the same.and everyone would always laugh at them criticised over their over-use of themes involving strippers, sex, prostitutes, drugs, sex, drinking and sex. for being derivative in the music they create, too often sticking to formula instead of innovating, and repetitive.If you can't tell the difference between baroness and nickleback,you must be tone deaf , Get some taste.

  • @K1RKH4MM3T
    @K1RKH4MM3T 12 років тому

    Yeah, I agree. I don't think the song is bad, but its not great either. Its fun, its catchy, but it lacks the depth and character of their older stuff. I'll wait and see what the rest of the album sounds like before hatin' on it, but I have a feeling it will follow the style of this song. Which, again, wont necessarily be bad, but I was hoping for another unique, proggy sudgefest like some of their older work.

  • @cangong
    @cangong 12 років тому

    An excellent way of putting it! in fact, i've always debated this point with others, and have always used Neurosis as an example. there's nothing wrong with having a 'real' job- that way you don't really need to compromise, and your passion and attitude might even remain intact... btw: didn't like this new Baroness tune that much. the vocal stylings are Disney-like, i.e., poppy and childish, commercial and pointless. hope the rest of the album rocks a bit more.

  • @grifftarroratron7663
    @grifftarroratron7663 12 років тому

    I didn't like this at first but it's really grown on me. I sort of feel the same about this as I did about "The Hunter" by Mastodon. It seemed like everyone reacted like they'd got Timbaland in to produce and had Timberlake on vox. Personally I thought it was a decent "poppier" attempt and I think this'll be the same. I think most people got into music listening to bands who had "clean vocals" before there was such a term so why wouldn't they want to sing.

  • @blackbookrecords
    @blackbookrecords 12 років тому

    its too bad people associate cleaner, clearer, more present vocal production to instantly degrade a highly respectable band to Nickelback status. The only thing stylistically different from the vocals on this song, to the previous two albums worth, is that Baizley isn't over-exerting his vocal chords with a growl. Melodically its consistent with everything he's done to date. But you tone the aggression down and add some production value, and suddenly he's Chad Kroeger? Idiots.

  • @MaritimeViper
    @MaritimeViper 12 років тому

    Hmm... maybe this song is Baroness' attempt to make a song that will catch the eye of the mainstream rock community, much like Mastodon tried to do with Curl of the Burl. I personally think the song is still good, but it's definitely not as good as the Red Album or Blue Record. However, I am not all that worried at all. This IS a double album anyhow, and if anything they would make half of it sounding like this, and the other half more like the Baroness we know.

  • @Fetusgi

    I bet you feel great pleasure provoking people on youtube with your ignorant comments. I know it feels good but choose your side more carefully. Being wrong is the worst mistake you can do no matter how provocative you can be. You're making very reckless assumptions from one comment without sufficient proof. Did it ever even came to your mind that I might have been rather sarcastic when writing that comment? I do disagree with him but the way I put it was clearly not too serious.

    This isn't as engaging as Blue Record was. There's my casual-Baroness-listener's opinion, does it bother you? Does it get under your skin? That people have different opinions on a band you were such a tr00 fan of? Do I have to go through a band's entire discography then wait more than six months to have a valid opinion for you? all im saying is it really doesnt have as much feeling compared to their entire body of work. they came out with this album so fast that it seemed like they were trying to just package and sell shit rather than spending more time on it and making something that sounds like baroness. the song isnt bad and i know you cant rewrite the same album, but that has nothing to do with feeling a song and putting true emotion behind it. they just sond bored when they are singing

  • @summatsnotright
    @summatsnotright 12 років тому

    clearly not as im pretty sure Baroness dont give a shit about main stream appeal, most likely have just written good music that they love, like they have done in the past, and you dont seem very appreciative of it, I dont get how anyone can think that Baroness were sat there saying to each other 'You know we've been doing this for years now, we have a strong following of dedicated fans and we're doing quite well for ourselves but fuck me do I want to be on the radio' which this song will not be

    solid song, i bet the rest of the album will be a lot different while still being baroness. with the whole nickelback thing, i think they have a lot of bullshit in their discography that sounds the same, but when they go more hard rock they actually have a sort of sound worth listening to and i can kind of hear them in this. Although, I still hate the frontman of nickelback and his voice.

    Dude, totally. I kinda like this song, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with you not being into it. It's cool, man. No biggie. Anyone who insults someone else on youtube is usually just a bored 11 year old anyway. I like the point you make about "unconditional support". If a band I like is going in a direction that I don't enjoy, why would I pretend to be into it? That kind of devotion is usually exhibited by younger audiences; I used to be like that too. Everyone is allowed an opinion.

  • @jomarthegreat1
    @jomarthegreat1 12 років тому

    I just used the 'sold out' comment for a reference, but I agree with that part. You're right though - not everyone's going to be thrilled, but I maintain that the single hardly defines an entire record. I myself like this song, and i'm pretty excited to see the end result. However, I could be let down very badly when it comes out, like I was when Lupe Fiasco released Lasers. I just take issue with people comparing it to Red or Blue; at least you listened and kept in mind that this is different.

  • @iammejez
    @iammejez 12 років тому

    for everyone mad that it isn't as sludgy, don't be surprised, blue record was hardly sludgy at all and still completely ruled. the only thing this song is missing is progressive time signatures. otherwise, it's full-on baroness, rock and roll to the max, guitar layers and solos and rousing vocals and all the good shit you don't find in mainstream anything. anyone that thinks they've sold out needs to see the live show, the opposite is true, they are getting better over time.

  • @Fetusgi
    @Fetusgi 12 років тому

    I can tell you why. Because people didn't really get thrilled by the song. For example, me. I didn't expected it to be like Blue or Red. I already knew it was not going to be as heavy as previous albums. For me it didn't sound like Baroness that I seek. There are more things different than the heaviness. Also, not that I would think so but someone might think due this that Baroness 'sold out'.

    That's the point of a two-party system. Average intelligence levels in America mean that people would be more easily confused with having more than two choice (the views of which a significant proportion still can't comprehend properly). You might not like the choices you have politically but believe me, your country is far better off with simple choices like Obama or Romney.

    I agree to an extent, if I can't pin down some influences or a sub-genre for a band it bothers the shit out of me. it's funny that you say this because it's pretty clear that that's exactly what they're doing. rewriting first, second, red or blue would just be forcing themselves to stagnate to appeal to their established fanbase. they're not "trying to appeal to the masses" just because their new music is less abrasive than their first EPs. they're playing for themselves.

  • @dr.coldbeer5959

    it seems like they focased more on making the lyrics catchy rather than focasing on the song as a whole. i dont like the vocal mix at all, its way to layered. That's true but I gotta say IMHO they give maybe too much attention to the vocals, atleast on this one. On previous albums they seemed to be more of an equal element among others. Also I kinda hope they are using little bit more aggressive approach atleast on some of the other songs on the album. That doesn't mean it can't be as melodic. :)

    Thanks but you don't have to worry about my ears. It would be quite nice to have that kind of ears but I just happen to have these which notice difference much specificly. On the other hand, at some points your kind of inaccurate ears might be bad for you. I'm good with my own hoping other songs will be better than this. And I'm pretty sure they probably will.

    Nickelback could never write a song more than 75 bpm. The only thing that's different on yellow & green is the vocal style. Still sounds just as tough, they're just straying away from what you'd expect. I mean really, how many more songs where the lyrics are screamed at you can you stand to listen to? This album will set an example.

    I don't see why people are so disappointed. Of course it doesn't sound like Blue Record or Red Album. That's because it's NOT THOSE ALBUMS! lol! That said, this definitely sounds like they went in a slightly different direction, but this song is still heavy as fuck! It still sounds like Baroness! You want disappointment, look at some other band that 'sold out'.

    the new album is a little light but i think it works with them i usually bitch and moan about a band changing the tempo of there sound but i think it works well for Baroness i would love to see them play live and hopefully they come down to New Mexico soon lol

    This has got to be the smartest heavy bomb-drop since Masters of the Universe started mulching minds back in the '90s. Brains and muscle AND a tweaked attitude. About the only thing with this much back-molar bite out these days is Dicey and Paprika's UA-cam dismantling of "Born to Be Wild." Yas!

    Some of you people can't even accept that it sounds like Nickelback. Well, it does. Listen to the first verse, the way he says "top" and "stop" that is full on Kroeger. I wish this wasn't true but unfortunately it is. This is NOT the Baroness that I became a fan of.

    Why the fuck are we talking about Mastodon? Who cares? The fact of the matter is that his statement is kind of bullshit. There are plenty of bands that don't go with the mainstream sound period that kickass and there are examples of bands that do go with it and it backfires. Metallica anybody?

    Its a bit of what I expected after kylesa went the same route. It honestly not as spectacular as I hoped but it sounds good. oh well its dumb to expect a band not to progress. could you imagine baroness pumping out album after album with the same sound? Snore.

    If any of you complaining about the vocals would to go out and scream for 45 or more minutes a night for several years, you might decide to write at least one song that has some melody and less intense vocals just to have a break when your sets start getting longer.

  • @brickoakapolarbear

    Aww man, can you dudes seriously not acknowledge that the vocal patterns and melodies are pure rock/pop - a la Nickelback? C'mon. Don't act like foolz. Certainly the guitar work - and especially the tones and production - destroy Nickelback, but the shared elements are there nonetheless.

  • @brickoakapolarbear
    @brickoakapolarbear 12 років тому

    Bleh. Hoping the rest of the album isn't this bland. Can definitely see the Nickelback comparison - primarily in the vocal hooks and patterns. Total pop.
    Anyway, I'm sure most of double album will be interesting, progressive, sludgy music - but this is just boring me.

    Epidemic of the forked tongue was disappointing for me. Behind The Masquerade nailed it perfectly, the sound and song structures, epidemic sounds like a weak version of Greyline, very mediocre and uninteresting compared to their other stuff. The production was lackluster to say the least.

    I like the style change (which is very slight) waaaay more than the stylistic change mastodon tried.I like how people are hating on it and saying how this album sucks yet 1.its the first track to drop off this album so far and 2. one track doesn't dictate the whole entire album as a whole.

    Here's a thought. If you are going to bitch and moan about it not sounding like "Red" or "Blue", go and buy another copy of those two then and I am sure Baroness wont care as long as you buy their albums. Otherwise, no shit it doesnt sound the same..its a different album and it effin rocks already!

    I don't hate it and there is definitely good tracks on this, I just like their other albums better. Check out the newest Black Pyramid album, there's a band going in the right direction, if they haven't broken up, someone told me they did.

    I guess all these comments show that most people don't actually listen to the music past the drums and singing because the music is EXACTLY the same in tone and 'sludgyness' as previous Baroness, he just isn't growling. This is awesome.

    It's pretty interesting to see how Mastodon, Torche and Baroness are all kind of going for a slightly more 'radio rock' kind of sound with their newest albums...
    I don't like this song too much but I still have faith that the album is going to be great.

    I tried, either my headphones (which didn't fail me up to date, also not on the other albums of baroness) are not good enough or my ears own an own opinion against this song and manipulate the sound entering my neurological systems.

    I like this better than the old stuff. The old stuff just sounds like a drunk guy yelling. I mean, this does too, but it's better. Don't get me wrong, I still like some older stuff like Swollen and Halo, but this is better than most of it.

    I like the song, but I don't like the mixing. it's too soft. Something I loved about the first two albums was that the sound was clear, raw and hard. Maybe it's the missing quality of the upload but the best parts sound like mashed potatos behind a curtain.

  • @brickoakapolarbear

    Pop is also a genre-term: IE: a style with associated conventions and cliches (in this particular instance, the vocal melodies, hooks and patterns).
    You technically don't have to be popular to play pop music. See: any indie pop band who sucks and has 7 fans.

    This song is pretty... irregular from Baroness' stuff, but I'm chalking it up to natural evolution. The mix sounds a bit off though, especially in the vocals. This track is still the shit and I'll be waiting very impatiently for the album to drop.

    As far as I know Greyline didn't release a new record after Behind The Masquerade. They did a split with another Dutch band though which sounds rather good. It's a split with the band Otis and it's called Epidemic of the Forked Tongue

    Some insane bastard mentions Nickelback once and suddenly Baizley becomes Kroeger. Idjits.
    This'll probably end up being what Curl of the Burl was to Mastodon's The Hunter, and that album had some magnificent tracks.

    While I agree that this song is amazing, you simply cannot deny that when he says "stop" and "top" he sounds like the singer of Nickleback. With that being said, I could not be any more excited for this album.
