MB&F BOOSTING WATCH PRODUCTION in its NEW M.A.D. HOUSE HQ
MB&F gave select journalists a tour of its new headquarters in Geneva during Watches and Wonders week, revealing that the renovated former family home will be used to enhance production in the coming years.
The independent watchmaker was hesitant to show the press around its former offices and workshops because they were unfit for a haute horologist, but the new Chateau Carouge, renamed the M.A.D. House, is much more up to the task, with historic wood paneling protected by state order juxtaposed with the sort of modern artistic flair associated with Max Büsser and his colleagues.
Many of the components that go into an MB&F Legacy Machine or Horological Machine are created by third party vendors, or 'friends' as the company refers to them.
However, final assembly, quality control, and other operations are housed in the chateaux, along with offices and conference rooms.
MB&F has been producing roughly 250 finished watches per year, but this is likely to increase to 350 last year, 420 this year, and possibly 500 in 2024, according to Mr Büsser.
Before speculators start salivating at the prospect of climbing a waiting list for the prized timepieces, which sell for considerably above their retail pricing, the business is quick to point out that long-standing fans and collectors will be first in line.
"We want to be good to our customers who have been with us for many years," he says.
MB&F is also wary of expanding too quickly in the current economic context because this can put a strain on suppliers, who, according to Mr Büsser, should be prudent in their capital investment.
Watchmaking gear and equipment can cost seven figures, and suppliers should be wary of investing at what could be the market's peak, he says.
Super-collectors and top end watch traders parted with over $50 million during a week of auctions by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo in Geneva last week.
Pre-sale estimates were on the cautious side, and this appears to have piqued interest in the sales, particularly for the rarest and most desirable lots.
For Phillips, that included a Rolex Ref. 6270 “The End Game”, which sold for CHF 3.6 million and Patek Philippe’s pink gold second series Ref. 2499 perpetual calendar, which hammered at CHF 3.2 million while the same reference in yellow gold CHF 2.3 million. Independent makers have been stars of the auction scene over the past two years, and Phillips presented high quality examples from F.P. Journe, Kari Voutilainen, De Bethune, Daniel Roth, MB&F, Roger Smith and Urban Jürgensen.
The Naissance d’une Montre II project Greubel Forsey x Urwerk x Dominique Buser x Cyrano Devanthey sold for CHF 406,400.
A Philippe Dufour Grande and Petite Sonnerie pocket watch made for Audemars Piguet sold for CHF 889,000. ROLEX, Ref. 6270 “The End Game” PATEK PHILIPPE, Ref. 2499 ROLEX, Ref. 6541 Milgauss “The Pinnacle BIVER Bovet
