    Once upon a time, hot hatches became popular because they were the fast, sporty versions of the cars that everybody else bought, meaning they were affordable. However, now that people are buying SUVs as much as they're buying hatchbacks, it follows that hot SUVs are becoming an inevitability.
    Audi, Ford and Hyundai certainly think so. The Audi SQ2 is the oldest car of our Tarmac-tearing triumvirate, but it's recently been facelifted, so Audi clearly thinks there's life in the old dog yet. It's also the fastest car of our trio, with 296bhp and a 0-62mph time of just 4.9 seconds.
    On paper, the Ford Puma ST is completely outgunned in this test, giving away 100bhp to the Audi and almost as much to the Hyundai. Obviously, it's slower as a result, sprinting from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds. However, it's also £10,000 cheaper than the Audi, and what's more, Ford has some of the finest chassis engineers anywhere in the motor industry, so can the ST deliver the kind of fleet-footed fervency to make up for that deficit?
    The Hyundai splits this particular deck with 276bhp and a 0-62mph time of 5.5 seconds. It also comes with a whole bunch of performance-enhancing gadgetry - including adaptive suspension, a limited-slip differential, launch control and more - to cut lap times even further. But is the performance as fearsome as the looks?
    In this CarGurus UK triple test, Rebecca Jackson explains the merits and drawbacks of each of our contenders, and names which is the best small-but-fast SUV you can buy.

    Build quality to me means how long it will last not how soft the materials are, in this case it's incorrect saying the Audi far outdoors the Hyundai, I'd say it was considerably short if multiple reliability surveys are to he trusted.

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799 2 роки тому +5

      Totally agree! It really irritates me that journalists all say Audis have good build quality…. what they really mean is that the materials feel really nice, switches and knobs nicely damped etc… but Audis brake! In fact one of the cars in this review IS actually broken. It’s the Audi! Audis and Volkswagens have a long list of common mechanical issues, including feeble engine bay plastics leading to a domino effect on part failures. I watch that ReDriven UA-cam channel - they only review cars once they have thousands of miles on them. Very interesting to hear what the mechanics have to say about longevity…..

      @@paulstaffordcook8799 exactly my feeling mate I'm I'm so fed up of it. Audi being praised for its build quality constantly is a joke given its reliability reputation. The funny thing is, Making up reasons to buy the Audi is all they can do as objectively is a complete waste of money when, apart from the badge, it's inferior in every way. Pretending it's a solid thing is all they have.

    While I love a manual, the slick 8spd DCT in the Kona is really impressive and, as it was in development by Hyundai for over 5 years before release, will likely be far more robust than anything from the VW group outside of Porsche PDK.
    No doubt the lack of auto option in the Puma ST will hurt sales (appreciating that is not a problem for Fiesta ST)

    A great comparison review Rebecca. Given in the UK it's often quite difficult to give any car the full beans for long before you are likely to receive an invoice for your in car portrait that was not ordered so the top speed does not count for me. With the amount of traffic on my usual journeys how quick the car is through the gears is more important for passing other vehicles. MPG with todays fuel prices is clearly another consideration. And we should not forget the residuals. One important factor though has to be driver involvement. So having waffled on I have to agree that the Ford wins for driver involvement and a manual box to hook up the correct gear for overtaking in an instant but looses out on residuals, The Kona sounds like each spirited drive could be an event given the power v chassis balance. The Audi may be middle aged in car terms for this group but is highly likely to hold its value better than most and my word it is a tad quick for those overtakes.

      I wish that as well, but if it had AWD, it would use more fuel, get worse fuel consumption, would cost more to build so it'd cost more to buy and would cost more to repair in the long run cos there would be more things to break down.

      @@DaveDVideoMaker yes. It would be a bit heavier, a bit more expensive, a bit more fuel hungry, but it would be much more practical. I currently own a 3rd gen Focus ST and as much as I love the car - I am not the biggest fan of FWD. You get the wheel hop, in winter car is just pain to drive and launching the car on anything but dry asphalt is just impossible. So I am looking to change the car to something what would be as much fun but a bit more practical - and the market for those cars is almost empty. Apart from cupra formentor and sq2 there is almost no other cars (powerful awd with a bit more ground clearance) in that price range.

      @@DaveDVideoMaker I've heard rumors that they will make kona n awd at some point (after restyling maybe) - since the platform allows for awd - you already can buy 130kw n-line kona. If they make it - I think I will choose hyundai over cupra. But so far, as I've said formentor has no competition.

      @@mkimask I did hear rumours for an IONIQ 5 N, but it’ll just be the same powertrain as the EV6 GT. However, it should be the first Hyundai N model to have AWD.

    I’ll take the Puma in grey, then pocket the £12k difference over the Audi, but maybe splash out a little on a Mountune remap to take it to 265hp, which allegedly won’t trouble the chassis and will maintain warranty. Hyundai eliminated on account of being named after a crap 70s coffee machine.

      It will invalidate your warranty. Mountune no longer have this agreement with Ford. It's the reason I haven't remapped mine although it is enough torque in stock to have fun on UK roads.
